If you cast a spell while wearing a buckler, normal Aracane Failure chance rules apply. The buckler's ACF chance stacks with that of any armor you are wearing.

What Jacobs did leave out in his spell combat example is that a magus using a buckler WOULD have to roll it's percentage on Arcane Spell Failure.

This is why arcane spellcasters tend to use mithral bucklers.

So question: how powerful is the Mending spell? My party in my RL game had thoughts of using it to repair a wrecked ship to escape a deserted island. I figured it would take several thousand castings, if it worked at all.

"Target: one object of up to 1 lb./level"

A ship is much heavier than that in normal gravity, and most of its parts are not "objects" in their own right.

Two people make identical copies of letter masses. One goes elsewhere. The other sends messages in the code determined by their letter masses. So long as every message gets to the first person, in the right order, the second can know exactly what messages were sent... But anyone not in possession of their letter masses won't be able to decipher a message even if they intercept it.

Thus, if you have the book described, you can decipher strange, nonsensical messages you may find somewhere, that are IMPOSSIBLE to decipher otherwise, so long as you find them in the proper order.

It's more practical to label each message with the page number used; that way you don't need all the messages to arrive, or in any special order. The vital thing is never to reuse any part of the book.

3 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

"Both genders of half-orc stand between 6 and 7 feet tall..." (Core Rulebook, page 25)

But the random height-weight table on page 170, and reprinted in the Advanced Race Guide, says:
"Half-orc, male 4 ft. 10 in. ... 2d12
Half-orc, female 4 ft. 5 in. ... 2d12"

which means female half-orcs would range from 4'7" to 6'5", with a median height of 5'6". Males would range from 5'0" to 6'10", with a median height of 5'11".

This came up because a player was disappointed to roll a 5'4", which is actually almost in the middle of the female range. I told her to just pick whatever height she wanted :)

Heck, why can't I have a LAWFUL Bard?!

You can.

The thing about Fast Study is that it frees you from ever having to prepare noncombat spells before you're sure you'll need them. (And forget about making scrolls of circumstantial spells. Use your time and money crafting wondrous items instead...everything in your spellbook is one minute away.)

I think pausing for 15 minutes in the middle of the day to prepare spells would start to bug people if it happened five or ten times a day, whereas 1 minute is no big deal. Since taking Fast Study I tend to leave around half my spell slots open in the morning. If you don't do much utility casting, or your days are pretty predictable, your mileage may vary.

(I could see people arguing that leaving a bunch of slots open is a good idea anyway, and it may be, but in practice I didn't use to do it before being disinhibited by Fast Study.)
