Not sure if this belongs in Customer Service or General, but I wanted to send a thanks to the customer service department at Paizo. Through error of my own, I recently had some shipping issues with a product I purchased through the online store. When I contacted Customer Service, and got quick responses from a person with an actual name, and she did everything possible to make sure I was taken care of. So, thanks Paizo Customer Service, and Sara Marie in particular, for the fantastic service. You guys dont just make great games, you run a great business!
Your books are perfect, James! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise....and they smell good! I love that new book smell, and both my Core Rulebooks still have it even after being used at least once a week! I, for one, have always appreciated how candid you and the rest of Paizo are when it comes to talking about what your plans are, why you did or didn't do things a certain way, how a particular rule should work, etc. Paizo has always been good about treating us like fellow gamers as well as valued customers. Thanks for that. Deciding not to include support information for 3rd party content in favor of adding more core content just makes sense. Regardless, Im glad to hear it will be making it into Ultimate Magic.
I plan on using a ring wraith for Kyuss, as well. Finding a good Avolakia stand-in was a nightmare, but I think the Star Wars Dice Ibegon figure works great. It stands on its own and fills a 10x10 nicely. It comes in a two pack with Trinto Duaba, but you can usually find Dice alone on ebay for pretty cheap. http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090612072643/starwars/images/4/40/D ice_Ibegon_action_figure.jpg My Dragotha is the McFarlane: Dragons Series 6 Boxed Set - Fossil Dragon Clan. http://www.spawn.com/toys/product.aspx?product=3234 For the Ebon Aspect below Alhaster I'm going to modify an Abomination from the Incredible Hulk film toy line.
Also, a good example of CG would be Wolverine from the films. He does things his own way (often being unreliable because he doesn't work within the confines of the team), forms loyalties based solely on his own feelings, chafes when forced to work with people that follow all the rules (the LG Cyclops for example), but he is compassionate, and altruistic, placing himself in personal danger to protect others, even those he has no personal connection to.
Keep in mind also that the Robin Hood that serves King Richard might not do so out of a sense of duty but out of individual loyalty. A chaotic person can serve someone they believe in, and the legitimacy of that persons right to rule wouldn't factor in one way or the other once they made the personal choice to follow. I usually look at the person's methods as to how they go about accomplishing their goals. Good and evil are easy, but did they follow the rules, bend them, or break them to do so? I would put the current popular version of Robin Hood as neutral good because he does respect legitimate authority, but he isn't afraid to do what he as to (which means breaking even King Richard's laws) to do the most good. He does lean to the chaotic just a bit in his methods, though.
I like that, Kaisoku. I think Im going to use something similar in my games, thanks! It reflects your skill with language in general and allows for fun things like you see in movies with different language elements (The Mummy comes to mind). As far as the argument that this spell or that can do it, who cares. I always thought it was cooler when Batman just started speaking in Latin or Japanese than when Green Lantern just turned on his ring.
...as above, or the prone character can crawl to an empty space, which is 1/4 movement I think, and provokes AoO, which the person standing in his square would provide cover for. Moving to the back of the party is possible moving through friendly squares, but moving around/through threatened squares would provoke more AoO. Moving through the monster's square to get behind him would require a Tumble check.
I think as to the why there are no monsters in the core books that make that particular ability useful is that they simply didn't think about it. It was just an oversight. When they were deciding which monsters were needed/wanted, no one snapped their finger and said "Wait a sec! We need to put in that special monster for the 10th level monk to fight!" Just like no one said,"monk lawful ki strike? Screw 'em!" It is a useless ability if you only use core, and that stinks a little, but I can forgive the immediate oversight for the long term results. Paizo isn’t making 2 core books, they are making an entire game. The argument that future products don’t count isn’t valid, because the Beastiery wasn’t out when the Core Rulebook was published, so technically none of the classes had anything to use their abilities on. If it is really bother you, though, I’d consider replacing it with a ki ability that allows you to treat your Ki Pool (magic) as having an enhancement bonus for the purpose of overcoming damage resistance for 1 round and costs 2 ki points. At 10th lvl it could count as +3 (silver/cold iron), +4 at 13th(adamantine), and +5 at 16th (alignment). By 20th he will probably have an amulet +5 so he could bypass them all anyway.
Maybe one option to help balance the companions against one another is to standardize a few of their abilities (like low-light vision and scent) and then put the others as abilities you could choose every few levels. Size increase could be on that list, making it just one option, but not something you HAVE to do if you wanted your companion to stay Dex based. Regardless of type, Animal Companions could all pick from the same list of abilities if they met the prereqs (wolves can't really pounce. |
