So I have held of on posting in here to give myself some lead time, because I have the distinct feeling one of my players has been peeking in here.

So we just had our first session of Book Four this weekend, so I will be writing up the end of Book two here and start writing about Book Three pretty soon.

Has there been any followup on this? I'm starting a campaign myself and curious to know how yours went.

The Paladin has fostered almost a dozen children over the years. He is a compassionate man with a big heart and dedicated to helping others avoid suffering. He is the kind of guy who would give up food if he was hungry so someone else could have it. Yes I have some ideas but in the past the message boards have give be better ideas or refined the ones I had. I have been fiddling with this NPC a little longer than the other one. He could be from a Noble family and they could be proud of all that he has done and welcome the party with open arms but that doesn't appeal to me. He could be ridiculed by his family by never rising up in the ranks like they wanted and by taking in monsters instead of...

Perhaps the paladin married young to a childhood sweetheart (who may or may not been to his family's liking). Something happened to the young bride which caused the Paladin to go solo and sever ties to his family. He could foster the kids in place of the kids he never was able to have.

As an alternate choice, perhaps the paladin found love later in life to someone much younger and less socially desirable. The only way he could spend time with her(or him) was through the guise of 'fostering' and arranging a more socially sanctioned fellows at arms relationship. The kids he adopted might be his way to extend the family.

I'll try taking a stab at the second one. Let's assume the mother is alive. There's nothing to say that she hasn't given her child up for lost. She also might not want anything around to remind her of her captivity. Considering you used the word 'rescued', it doesn't sound like she had too fun a time. She could have very easily settled down, married and started a family, giving your character full human siblings.

If it turns out the mother did want the baby, well divination is a tricky thing and evey very reliable spellcasters botch. The if the mother was devout she could have gotten a message from Iomedea of 'i need you (location) doing (project)' which could entangle the mother for several years rendering her unable to search.
