Im leaning towards either Champion or Cleric.

That concept sounds great for what I understand of this adventure.

Witch and knowledge synchronize well together. For your goal as a spell-based debuffer/controller, you are definitely going to want +4 in Intelligence, since it feels terrible when the enemy resists your spell and nothing happens.

Recommended Ability Array(s):
+4, +3, +1, +1, +0, +0
+4, +2, +2, +1, +0, +0

EDIT: To achieve this, you will need a Background with either Intelligence or Dexterity as its fixed ability boost so that you can take both Intelligence and Dexterity at the Background step.

Of the Adventure-specific backgrounds, Folklore Enthusiast is the obvious choice for an occult scholar. Other Season of Ghosts backgrounds that meet the criteria are Close Ties, Outskirt Dweller, and Willowshore Urchin. Generic backgrounds are too numerous to mention, but Fortune Teller is an obvious choice (low use for the lore), also Hermit (forest lore) and Root Worker are good choices. /end edit

As a spellcaster, you'll never really need to use weapons. You'll have the lowest AC potential of the group for the majority of the level range covered by this adventure. My top recommendation would be Intelligence +4 and Dexterity +3. Place a +1 in Wisdom to bolster the Wisdom-based knowledge skills (nature, medicine, and religion). The final +1 could go into Constitution for more HP and a better Fortitude save (this is what I'd do) or Charisma if you want to dabble in social skills/use Intimidation, knowing you'll never be "great" at it.

The Occult tradition probably has the best selection of Debuff spells, but none of them are a bad choice for that.

Spinner of Threads (Occult) is on theme for both your character and the adventure and the hex/familiar ability is easy to use.

Starless Shadow (Occult) is on theme with the adventure, but the hex and familiar ability are trickier to get use out of.

The Resentment (Occult) is the Debuff patron of choice, but it's not especially on theme for...

Yes, that was really helpful—thank you!

I was already leaning toward +4 in Intelligence, so that confirms it. I definitely don’t want to build around debuffs/control and then have enemies shrug everything off hehe. Then Dexterity +3 I think I’ll probably go with Wisdom for the extra knowledge/medicine support, then Constitution for survivability. Since my character’s meant to be more eerie and observant than especially charismatic, that feels like the better fit.

For background, I think I’ll go with Folklore Enthusiast since it fits the concept and helps with the Intelligence requirement for the build. Thanks for pointing it out—that does sound like a really good fit.

I’ll likely prioritize Occultism first because it seems to fit both the theme and the playstyle I want most, then probably society for the investigation side of things or Medicine depending on what the party ends up needing.

Spinner of Threads sounds especially interesting—both thematically and mechanically —now that you mentioned it. It feels like the cleanest fit for what I want the character to do. I’ll read a bit more on Starless Shadow and Resentment as well, but I think I’m narrowing in.

Thanks again for the feedback! It gives me a much clearer direction for building my character.

speaking of which -- does anyone have any aversion to creepy crawlies, horror themes, etc? Speak now or forever hold your peace! :)

I like the premise for the adventure. Reminds me of the SECOND Neverwinter Nights game.

I’m good with creepy crawlies and horror themes. The spooky vibe seems like it’ll fit well with the kind of character I’m planning.

Hi! I’m currently planning to create a Witch for Season of Ghosts and wanted to ask for some advice.

Right now, I’m imagining a character whose strength is mostly in magic, occult knowledge, and social intuition—someone good at battlefield control, debuffing enemies, investigating supernatural events, and helping in social encounters.

Her approach to danger would be careful and analytical. She’d rather study the situation first, recall lore about threats, and prepare before acting instead of rushing in.

For her “other-ness,” I’m thinking of the odd local mystic everyone in town knows but doesn’t fully trust because they fear her—maybe a fortune-teller who grew up in Willowshore and is known for eerie but accurate predictions.

In combat, I’d like her to use hexes and spirit/occult-themed spells rather than weapons.

Her role would mainly be debuffer/battlefield controller/knowledge specialist

Does this sound like it would fit well with the campaign and party? Also, for a Witch in Season of Ghosts, which patron would you recommend most?

Lily's eyes widen, then widen more, until she looks somewhere between astonished and on the verge of happy tears. “Oh… oh wow,” she murmurs, blinking rapidly. “That’s— that’s so many replies!”

She laughs softly, the sound bubbling with both nervous energy and joy. Her cheeks are pink from the warmth of it all, and her smile doesn’t seem to fade even as she shakes her head in disbelief. "Thank you kindly for the welcome and all the advice. I’ve just started walking the Pathfinder Society trails, and already they’ve led me to some fine company. "

"Tempest, thank you for the kind words! Im still new to this but I'll do my best to live up to the praise" Her eyes shine with a mix of gratitude and excitement and says, "Actually, GM Valen… if you ever decide to run 1-12 The Burden of Envy again, I’d love to join! but I'll be honored to join any adventure you'll offer."

The next time I start a Level 1-4 game, I will save lilythium a seat, assuming nobody by the name of flora-ine comes around and reacts first.

There's probably enough alumni-niums of Gameday games to start a game. Sulfur those people, I may offer #1-02. I'll make sure they get a seat before all the seats argon.

But this bro-mine is a little busy for the next week or two, so I don't have enough time to zinc into a game.

"I’ll admit, I’m feeling pretty noble about the offer — you could say it helium-nates my spirits and sparked a reaction. I'll gladly take that seat whenever you're ready, I’m sure it’ll be an ionic experience. No pressure — I know things can get a little volatile when the schedule’s full. In the meantime, I’ll stay positive and keep my energy stable."

Hi everyone!
I’m completely new to Pathfinder and Paizo Organized Play, and I’m really excited to start getting involved! I’ve just started my first two adventures here on the forums and it's been a lot of fun so far.
I’d love to find a good beginner-friendly adventure so If anyone has recommendations for scenarios that are great for first-time players — I’d really appreciate your suggestions!
I’m still learning the ropes of Pathfinder and the online Paizo community, so any advice or friendly guidance is very welcome. Thank you so much in advance :)
