I have fallen in love with the Medium and the Relic Channeler archetype in particular. I don't much care how under optimized it is. That said, I'm having some trouble coming up with ideas for how a starting character would have relics from 6 different "legends."
There is the generic starter, all 6 are heirlooms passed down because the legends in questions were part of his tribe/family line(depending on setting and background).
Second, is the 6 were actually a party who died and were left in unmarked graves. Their souls having unresolved business manage to call out to the medium and finish their business through him.
Theoretically you could also Indiana Jones the relics, but that's harder to justify as a starting character.
None of these are bad, but they lack a bit of the flair that I am looking for. Then I read a thread by someone who suggested using a Samsaran who is channeling their own past lives. THAT is pretty cool. After reading that, I figured I'd see if anyone else had any cool ideas for a relic channeler.
This kind of seems like too small of a question for it's own thread, but here I go. I'm playing a Goblin Paladin for the amazing RP shenanigans. The idea is basically that he is an otherwise generic goblin, who pretends really hard that he's a wise paladin. Since he's pretending, a lot of his "wisdom" comes out nonsensical and stupid. I figure I'll largely focus on malapropisms and messing up/combining wise sayings(like the bartender in Boondock Saints).
As part of this though, I want my goblin to give himself a title. Like a "Gurgam the witful" kind of thing. But I want it to be dumber/funnier. Something that shows he's trying to sound cool and smart, but too dumb to actually use the right word. Any ideas for said title?
Here is the basics of my character, Brahm Ossia. He is an Inquisitor/Internal Alchemist who belongs to a group within the magistratum. This group is made up of freaks and outcasts and as such the magistratum doesn't care about any of it's members. As such, they were on the short list to be sent into Harlan.
The Scarlet Order:
The Scarlet Order is a subgroup within the Magistratum. However, you have almost certainly never heard it called this. Due to the nature of their members they have earned many more infamous nicknames; Spriggans, Crows etc. From the beginning they have been a religious group dedicated to the destruction of the evil beasts that threaten civilization. To that end they have always used whatever they could to gain an advantage over the powerful creatures they face potions, grafts, limited magic. In particular, they took alchemy and used it to the fullest extent they could with no regard for the stigma they might gain. As a result, the Scarlet Order is filled with people whose bodies have been mutated and changed through the power of alchemy. There are many rumors that the "freaks" that make up their order are actually cursed or made some kind of demonic pact for power. None of this matters to a member of the order though. It is mostly made up of the unwanted; orphans taken in and raised by the order, people who seek vengeance on the beasts for various reasons, or even the occasional criminal with nowhere else to turn. With such a large focus on power though, the Order teaches all of it'a members two things above all: Humility and Control. The order exists to destroy the evil that threaten the world, not create new ones. The few that have ever tried to betray the order did not make it far.
Background:
Brahm has been part of The Scarlet Order for about a century. In all that time, he had never regretted his decision to join. Many would resent the stigma gained from being a part of such a group, but Brahm is a tiefling. He was a monster from the start. As such he lived a rough life before joining the order. He doesn't talk much about his time before the order though. He spent a lot of time scrounging for scraps and trying to avoid beatings; both from adults and other children. Even within the order it took time to earn his place. But one of the Scarlet Order's basic precepts is to use any weapon that you can. Once he had proved himself a valuable ally, he earned his place among them. The training was difficult; both physically and mentally. While his body was being broken down and rebuilt to increase his tolerance to the various concoctions the order used, his mind was being shaped into a veritable library of information. Any and every monster they had record of he had to learn how to kill. What weapons to employ and how. He threw himself into his training with tremendous fervor. It was the only place he had ever been where his accomplishments were recognized over his appearance. In fact, many of the order members looked even stranger than he did. Despite this, Brahm never made what you would call "friends." The Scarlet Order just isn't that kind of place. But being there he had comrades, and to Brahm, that was more than he could have asked for. After all his time in the order, he is still very loyal to his comrades and the Order's precepts, however he has grown a bit jaded towards the world. No matter how hard they fight, there will always be more to fight. Even if they somehow succeeded there are worse monsters amongst those they protect than those they kill. The Noxious March weighs especially heavy on his mind. A great many undead fell at his hands, but few truly deserved it. Despite this, he continues to fight and will do so until his end. He's already damned, may as well bring the rest of the monsters down with him.
If I have time, I still want to write a little short story for him, but I'm at Gen Con now and likely won't be able to finish it.
@Ashe
Just a heads up as Fendrith has been busy and likely didn't notice about your character. I spoke with him about my character being in the duskgarde/magistratum and he elaborated a bit. The Duskgarde is a secret group which MOSTLY consists of left over intelligent undead that the Lord keeps(so you could still be a part of it). However, the Magistratum has declared that ALL undead are to be purged. As such, the Magistratum is unaware of the Duskgarde. The words he used were:
The Magistratum is not aware of the Duskgarde, otherwise they would've been purged and Halduram Colton would be dealt with accordingly. Where your character stands on the purging of sentient undead who may not have chosen the life of undeath for themselves is up to you, and how your character fits in with the Duskgarde is also up to you.
Just so you aren't blindsided at the last minute or anything. Also, just for your information. My character is no longer going to be a part of the Duskgarde. I couldn't reconcile my character idea with this information so we won't be doubling up or anything if you stick with it.
Just to update my submission. Brahm is a Tiefling Inquisitor 6/ Alchemist(Internal Alchemist) 6. He is part of an as yet unnamed group within the Magistratum(will name soon). It is a group of basically freaks and monsters(alchemical discoveries like tentacles extra arms and whatnot). They are a valuable force, but are largely treated as being expendable due to their freakish nature. Back story is still being shored up at the moment, but ready soon.
Okay, I am beginning work on the backstory for Arcane bomber, but I want to know what I'm working with. The class itself references the use of alchemy like the alchemist class. Are there alchemists in the world that my character could base his class off of is he pulling this entirely out of his hat? If he is pulling it out of his hat, do I need to include alchemy in the "flavor text" of his bombs? Regardless, I'm going to have fun setting up this backstory.
I MAY have my character jump to different group other than the Duskgarde, but having him be an undead hunter as part of a group of undead is too interesting for me not to try and work out first. So for now sticking with that, thanks for the extra info.
Hahahaha!! Sorry about that, definitely didn't intend to create a weapon that powerful. It seems obvious now, but somehow I didn't think about it at the time. I'll drop the Imp. Critical and most of the penetrating, but is any penetrating okay? Would like Penetrating 1 or 2 be broken? I'm having some trouble finding a baseline for that. If it isn't that's fine, it's just more points for other things(may look into some armor).
You could also use your wind powers to create a semi-vacuum to use the suffocation power. Not the most "heroic" of powers, but a good way to incapacitate people.
You could also use your wind powers to grant yourself a speed boost for a slam attack or something.
I BELIEVE I've done this all correctly. Please let me know if I have misunderstood how the powers or equipment works.
Jin Liang:
Concept: Jin is a non-bender who is out to prove that he is the match of any bender.
COMPLICATIONS Recognition - Jin is out to prove his skills. To show he isn't inferior to anyone. He isn't necessarily concerned with getting recognition from large number of people. Just so long as he can force the bender in question to admit Jin is an equal if not better he's happy.
Temper - Jin isn't exactly the most cool headed person from the get go, but he especially hates his skills being slighted. Anyone who says he is inferior to a ender is picking a fight in Jin's mind and Jin is more than willing to oblige.
Responsibility - Jin was booted from the military but he still feels an obligation to protect people. It is for this and this alone that Jin is able to put aside his other feelings and goals in order to accomplish something. Once the people are safe though, it's back on.
Working on a character intro but wanted to make sure there are no issues with my build. My character, Zeke Ossia, is a Tiefling Inquisitor 6/Wizard 6. He is a worshipper of either Pharasma or a Pharasma-like god(a god who hates undead). I intend for Zeke to be part of the Duskgarde and his specialty in the Duskgarde is hunting undead and necromancers(not all he does, but his focus).
The build for him in my Alias Profile is mostly done, but I'm still playing around with a couple minor things. However, I wanted to double check with you on a couple things.
Build Questions:
First and foremost are my archetypes. Zeke is a Witch Hunter-Inquisitor and an Arcane Bomber-Wizard. I'd be surprised if you had a problem with the Witch Hunter but I could see some DMs having issues with the Arcane Bomber and wanted to check before assuming it was okay.
Second is a couple of items I'm looking to use. I'm looking to use a Bolas(with exotic weapon proficiency) and possibly a net as well(without exotic weapon proficiency) to expand his combat options. However, the net especially can be destroyed really easy(I can fix it easily as well but...). My question would be your stance on making the net with special materials like darkleaf cloth(almost certainly leaning toward cheese, but wanted to ask).
And lastly is armor. I'll use mage armor mostly, but for times when that's not an option I wanted an Armored Coat(don as a move action). But my strength score can't really handle the weight of lugging it around. Which brings me to the Silkweave special material. Double cost, but the item is half the weight(much easier on my encumbrance). However, the coat says it's made of leather and metal so I'm not sure if this would work like I want or not. Mithral halves the weight of metal armor but how would I even price two special materials? Or would I just use mithral?
I'd have to go for option 2. Elements of Magic is interesting, but complex. I'd have redesign most of my character to use it. More importantly if we use the rules presented, at least as I understood them, it will increase my character's already straining MAD.
I've raised his fighting score a bit since then. It was kind of a preliminary thing. I wanted him to have lower ability scores to have the majority of his ability be from training(skills) instead of from talent. I still want to do that, but I think I went a bit too far with it off the bat.
I actually hadn't even considered his movement speed. I will definitely look into that thanks.
I wanted to know if you have any problems with mixing divine and arcane classes. You have magic functioning differently both mechanically and thematically so I wanted to make sure having an arcane class and a divine class wasn't going to break any rules of magic(Specifically Inquisitor and Wizard).
This actually brings up something I've wondered for a while and Kinevon touched on it. If you have Total Cover and can't be seen by the opponent then you are effectively invisible, so do you get a +40/20 on your stealth the same as with the invisibility spell or not?
As for missing the trap, how many times have you missed finding your car keys in plain sight but after checking three or four times suddenly you see them? It's like that. If they're willing to take the time, they can keep looking.
If it bothers you, find ways to penalize them for the time they're spending. Roll perception checks for enemies to notice them and set up an ambush or something.
Gonna keep this light to kind of follow the "theme." Will provide more details if requested.
Race: Male Tiefling
Class: Ranger
Style: Two Weapon Fighting
The main focus of this character is going to be bluffing(so two weapon feint will be in his build somewhere). He adventures for the gold, but the biggest draw for him is using his bluff skill to trick magic creatures out of their treasures(making use of the Favored Enemy bonus to bluff). Of course, once he has the treasure he has to make sure they KNOW he tricked them. No fun otherwise.
Name:
Jin Liang
Concept:
Jin is a non-bender who is out to prove that he is the match of any bender.
Back story:
Jin comes from a small town in the Earth Kingdom. He was born the “older” of two fraternal twins. His brother was the only one who inherited their father’s earth bending ability though. As such, Jin often times felt slighted by the attention his brother got for his abilities. Some were imagined, some weren't. Jin didn't hate his brother by any means, but he hated the attention everyone else gave him. So, Jin started trying to “one up” his brother; trying to do things without bending better than his brother could do with bending. He failed and made a fool of himself a lot, but never gave up. Despite his efforts though, even by their 18th birthday Jin had not beaten his brother even once. So, he decided to join the military. Jin would take advantage of their facilities to train himself further. After 5 years of service, Jin was “discharged” from the military for fighting with a superior officer. The officer was a bender and they got into a fight about bending superiority. The fight was quickly stopped and didn't reach a conclusion(a fact Jin was not happy about). They were both at fault, but since the officer was of higher rank it became Jin's fault. After being discharged he was unsure of what to do. He didn't want to return home yet as he felt his skills could still be polished further, but he didn't really have anywhere else to go. Jin wound up traveling around seeking a master to help polish his skill as well as master himself and his temper. Not sure from there as it depends on how we enter the game.
Personality:
Jin is very proud. Any slight to his pride is more than likely going to end in a fight. Jin is very passionate about what he does. Once he starts something, he sees it through to the end. Despite his antagonistic nature, Jin is also pretty good natured. Even though he spent much of his life training to beat his brother he’ll be the first to defend his brother if someone insults him.
Description:
Jin is 5’8’’ with relatively short hair kept in a small top-knot. He has a short “chin strap” beard. His keeps his clothes clean, but he sticks to simple comfortable clothes that are easy to move in.
Build preview: Advantages :

Jin is going to be more “skilled” than talented so he has a lot more skill points than ability points. I may add more skills if I have the free points.
