I have to bring something up here regarding the Aasimar and Tiefling:

The fact they have grafts as well as a functional race is fantastic. That said, would most GMs let someone play (for instance) a Vesk Tiefling or a Skittermander Aasimar in a standard party, or would do you think they'd be (or even should be) relegated to just using the race which assumes a human background?

On a differing note: Glad to see velstracs being listed as velstrac. I guess it took an entire gap to convince mortal races to start using the right term?

Agreed. A Starfinder update of the hive (see Pathfinder's Horror Adventures) would be great to see.
Yes, more Kucharn/Swarm creatures please!

While I would be all for more Swarm stuff, I do have to say that the Hive is different from the Swarm.

The Swarm are insect-like monstrous humanoid creatures bound to the hive mind.

The Hive are aberrations that are basically xenomorphs with swarming larvae instead of a face hugger.

Granted, you don't want either knocking at your door but one is more Starship Troopers, the other is more Alien.

I for one really enjoy the interpretation of the paladin offered in the Starfairer's companion, being more than just a mere conversion. The oaths are a wonderful notion and one can expand the class vastly through the creation of more of these instead of the archetypes of PF.

That said, we enter into a difficult realm when we consider the antithesis of this class, the antipaladin. I can't just take all of A and make it -A like most paladin things. Granted, the rest of the class features should smoothly convert, comparing their PF to their SF variants then referencing what antipaladins get instead (although poison..), but oaths complicate matters.

So I ask this: What is one to do?
Do I make unique oaths and trust they are balanced?
Do I just take the ones that easily flip and flip them (Justice and Righteousness to.. Injustice and Wickedness?) and let that be it?
Do I leave the oaths alone a let there be antipaladins of Verity?

Or.. Do I wait for an unknown length of time for there to be a publication that handles all this for me?

As such, with just the information we have, I think it's a bit of a stretch to assume that you can use just any metal to make Solarian Weapon Crystals.

While true, how well would different forms of quartz work in a quartz clock? For instance: amethyst is a quartz that, among other things, contains some iron.

Not all Lawful Good souls go to heaven, in other words. There are other Lawful Good outer planes out there as well. We just don't talk about them for the same reason we don't really focus much on other worlds than Golarion and (to a much lesser extent) the distant worlds of Golarion's solar system—we just don't have the time or resources to detail everything.

This is factually untrue in the Campaign Setting. The only place it's stated is in an in-world document. Meanwhile, several Archdevil's out-of-character profiles explicitly contradict this whole story.

In short, this story is a lie (almost certainly one perpetrated by Asmodeus).

Respectfully, I disagree because we have indications that he still has the spear but I'll stop here mostly because this is getting a bit heated and also because we've strayed pretty far off the topic at this point.

Well, there's no contradiction (and it's still a lie) if Ihys existed and Asmodeus killed him, but they were just two powerful Angels at the time rather than the first two beings in existence (which would fit perfectly with the aforementioned Archdevil backstories).

But yeah, I'll drop it.

I'm just going to throw this out there:

As do I, but he is at least still mentioned. Perhaps though, he was a major player in the gap and though he still has his throne atop hell, his influence has grown less and less direct. Hellknights and his forces still exist, and we do have a devil that is a spaceship, but maybe worshipping the Prince of Darkness just isn't as popular, left to members of cults, military orders, and ironically rebellious teenagers? The kingdom of Cheliax isn't exactly around anymore.

You could, but it'd be less like a quest and more like a campaign, as to get a full account you would require not only the Book of the Damned, but also the Concordance of Rivals and the Chronicle of the Righteous. Each of which is shattered into many pages across the prime material and from whom a single chapter or even page is an incredibly valuable artifact containing incredible amounts of knowledge.

If you could successfully gather the pages of each book, accessing their deepest secrets would require fighting the embodiment of their knowledge each a shard of the angel who imbued his essence into the tomes. They are CR 25 creatures by PF standards and reform to fight again after a week. Good luck.

That is a excellent point. it would be a great deal to do.. but one has to wonder the impact. Forbidden information turned from obscure to widely available.

...Another gap?

Maybe some outsiders (excluding ones like the qlippoth as they aren't born of mortal souls) not based on the humanoid frame but on very different forms, or at least some of the different races.

That reminds me of an odd idea I had. Upon seeing how alien the Qlippoth were I wondered about a role for them in space. Then it hit me. They got summoned to a world as the enemy of encroaching demons and set about not just defeating the demons but slaughtering the innocents and trapping the chaotic evil souls to keep them from moving on to the Abyss.

The Qlippoth then realize the universe is too big to remove all those who can become demons by slaying innocents before they can be corrupted and set up a "rehab" center. Chaotic evil souls are sent their and tortured until they see the error of being demon seeds. If they risk dying before changing alignment their souls are trapped.

That is an interesting notion. Though: I think they could make use of utukku qlippoth methods, compelling the souls to trade away their conversion into petitioners and in time demons to instead become just quintessence that becomes a part of the abyss. Or.. if they have the souls.. just destroy them, use them for fuel. Perhaps an enterprising form of qlippoth have taken to daemon and devil inspired methods, using souls (mainly those destined for the abyss) as fuel and construction materials (perhaps.. even a qlippoth inspired loosely by Eberron's Daelkyr, because even just a vaguely humanoid shaped qlippoth would screw with people.)

i'd say this: Could you have special material crystals? Yes, but it isn't going to be a silver coated crystal or just a piece of adamantine.

An adamantine solarian weapon crystal would have adamantine as a component of its crystalline structure. Conversely, you could have solarian weapon crystals that bestow the properties of a special material but they themselves are not made of said material. in this case a silver solarian weapon crystal tied to a spear and then thrusted into a lycanthrope isn't going to do anything special. But a solarian using one properly would be a different story.

While i am certain they could move as quad, they are a bipedal race. if you want interesting, consider the wording then consider this: Perhaps this race started out as half-dragons (probably of ryphorian descent), but became diluted not on the dragon side (which could of led to sorcerers down the line) but on the humanoid side, before eventually starting to breed true.

A new outsider (mostly fiends) for each of the outsider races. Qlippoth, daemon, demon, asura, kyton, ect., along with perhaps updates to old ones. Updates to old templates, like half-fiend, half-celestial, kyton apostle, lycanthrope (and entothrope)..

And imagine for a moment a kyton-made ship, a living writhing mass of flesh, or what they could do with the flesh of a race like the barathu.

And speaking of aberrations: Aboleth.

Perhaps this is a misunderstanding on my part, but I couldn't help but notice.

Though not a requirement of the class, Mystics hold a strong(?) connection to the gods in the same way as clerics of old did. Due to that, you'd think there would be some alignment requirement yet there is not. While such an individual could not be a priest as well (to start out anyways, given there are no rules on ex-priests so.. A priest of Asmodeus who transitions to CE or LG.. or further, is still mechanically a priest of Asmodeus), couldn't a mystic follow a deity in some form even though they themselves do not match the requirements of clergy or even follow a heretical view/doctrine?

Am I wrong?
What do you think of this?
Are there any character concepts that this aspect lends itself well to (such as a NG Mystic of Cthulhu, who is convinced he is a CG deity of rivers and dreams)?

There are a couple aspects I felt would be worth discussion here. We, of course, have the question of item values (Gold to Credits) and basic conversion rules, but then we have a more subjective question. What items do you think from Pathfinder would be interesting (be it good or bad, or anywhere in between) to see use in Starfinder?

Examples:

Shadowcraft weapons would be evil, given its ability to change form. A Shadowcraft longarm could turn from a yellowstar plasma rifle into an LFD sonic rifle.. Or literally any other longarms weapon as level wasn't a concept for weapons. It requires no ammo, and the only problem is that a succeeded Will save by the target reduces your damage.

Demon mother's mask, given the continued presence of the worship of Lamashtu, could still be around and though i don't see it as a great item for gameplay, i do see it as one that offers interesting story angles. Like when the party encounters a fiendish sarcesian with a face with traits comparable to that of a surnoch's, such a mask explains how even if it goes unmentioned.

Veemods, especially brown ones, would be very useful. Drow are more or less accepted as one of the Pact (not that the elves are happy) and so those traveling to brighter locations for business at least would certainly benefit from what basically equates to sunglasses.

Well, the Lycanthrope and Entothrope templates do convert with relative ease (at a glance it is just about fine as is, but 1/2 the bonuses to ability scores for use on monsters, because monsters just use modifiers, not scores). The big issue i see is you also have to convert the animal (or vermin), or only use those already in Starfinder.

The Gap is partially due to the errors in the Record and the updates to it.

Thinking about this, this does raise another question:

How was the Book of the Damned impacted by the Gap? It is constantly updating itself, recording every evil thought and more. Would the book:
A. Have a back log that it works to fill, meaning it may be behind.
B. Be unaffected.
C. Have the information it would of collected during the gap curiously absent.

They're explicitly created by reverse engineering the Androffan androids and mostly made with the same methodologies, though.

Lady Funnyhat wrote:
As for unfortunate implications? Many androids are slaves. They also can't get pregnant or impregnate. If they have fully functional sex organs there's definitely something going on that most gaming tables don't want to think about.

I honestly don't think that's any more unfortunate than the implications of a race where many members may want to engage in sexual activities (since many androids do, indeed, have gender identities and sexuality) and be utterly incapable of doing so because their creators thought it 'wasn't necessary'.

Actually, that strikes me as quite a bit more horrific given it's a permanent removal of their ability to participate in a particular sort of activity as a species. Rape and sexual slavery are horrific, but rendering a servitor race incapable of doing any enjoyable activity forever is quite a bit worse, looked at long term.

Also, and somewhat unfortunately, the exact unfortunate implications you refer to make it almost certain, from a realistic perspective, that if you can create a slave race with the ability to have sex, that's how they'll be created.

This makes me think there could easily be groups of androids who turn to gods and demigods of lust and fertility in hopes of being granted the ability. Ardad Lili, Belial, Lamashtu, Nocticula, and Socothbenoth, Just to name a minority of the options that just the lower planes offer.

..Now, one must wonder how many incubi, succubi, and other such finds rise from the souls of androids. Just because it can't be sated doesn't mean the desire is utterly absent in all of them.

According to this passage, some deities just... fell out of necessity or just lost their primary worship planet.

According to Pathfinder's lore, deities don't die if they lose their worshippers. Other deities or very powerful creatures can kill a deity, but you cannot kill one by wiping its worshippers entirely. This might be a legacy stuff from D&D though, as the Githyankis' Lich Queen didn't want to become a patron deity to avoid dying by lacking worshippers.

Back to Starfinder, why would Abadar, Desna, Iomedae, Pharasma, Sarenrae, Urgathoa and Zon-Kuthon be able to "survive" without Golarion? How did Besmara become a greater deity than she was? How did Lao Shu Po go from the "Goddess of rats and ratfolks" to the "Goddess of ysokis"... when ysokis were never heard from until Starfinder? How did we even get a god of computers, Triune, when a computer was surely invented by mankind? How did Eloritu become the next god of magic after Nethys, when magic wasn't cast aside when technology came around?

Rovagug and Torag are the only known core deities that vanished with Golarion... although nothing of a plane shift spell can correct for them to return home. Shelyn is still alive, but she's apparently travelling the cosmos to cure his half-brother... yet she isn't listed as a "minor" deity. The rest? No idea...

Why would Abadar, Desna, Iomedae, Pharasma, Sarenrae, Urgathoa, and ZK survive without Golarion? Because they'd have followers elsewhere. Unless I am mistaken, none of their domains were on the Cage, none of them were exclusively followed on Golarion, and their worship was carried to the stars even if they were. ZK especially, as do you think the velstracs are just going to limit themselves to the flesh and delicious suffering of one planet? They are scientists and artists.

Besmara: Space Pirates. Thats.. all I got.

Laof Shuf Po: Ysoki were mentioned as far back as 2008, and they have always been Akiton's ratfolk.

Triune: Three AI ascended to godhood and decided they's run better if they were one being, and AI are just as capable of ascending as beings of flesh. Humans were created by humans and some have become gods too after all.

Eloritu: There can and are multiple gods of the same thing so I see no issue there, just this one covers tech too. Nethys may still yet have followers.

Perhaps here could be a setting reason: Only through the pursuit of magic of a specific expression can achieve some of the greater feats, and those methods have been lost to time. Most have come to understand magic as a singular primary method/force, which may make it easier to channel and utilize (both thematically and mechanically) but it does limit it. Additionally, what if such levels of magic were responsible for what got the gods to get together, move Golarion, and wipe everyone's memory.. Or such more simply; Such levels of magic could at least give answers that the gods do not want known.

To a point, I agree, but lets say you have a priest of ZK. They are that way at 1st level and at.. 4th level they swear off the faith, publicly cursing his name, distancing themselves from his clergy. Lets say they had a redemptive arc so thats how that happened.

Then the person would probably find a new god, maybe one that is good aligned, and his redemptive status would elevate him as he rapidly climbs the ranks of his new faith.

Nowhere does it say that a Priest can't trade gods after all.

That does handle one route, but it assumes that they'd jump from one clergy to another. Not something I imagine clerics ordinarily doing all the time either but alright. But what if they don't? What if they become an atheist, having lost faith in the gods. Is it best to decide that counts as a philosophy?

An ace pilot becomes afraid to sit at the controls ever again, a bounty hunter quits tracking down people in favor of a different kind of work, an Icon falls out of favor after controversial actions or simply seeks to drop from the lime light, a mercenary moves from payment for military(esque) action in favor of a new career, an outlaw goes legit, a priest loses faith in their god or their god loses support for them (an alignment change for example), a scholar loses interest in their field of study, after a horrific incident a starfarer gives up space travel in favor of adventures exclusive to a known world, or a xenoseeker's passion for new races fades.

All of the themes assume from level 1 to level 20 that you will forever be on that path, but what does one do if the theme stops fitting the character? I know retraining is an option, but that doesn't seem quite right for this (at least some of these).

What do people think of this? Am I seeing a problem that isn't a problem?

Also, what reasons can you come up with that a person might evolve such that a different theme fits them better or simply that their theme stops being appropriate to them?

Retconning. If X happens in published content (be it a campaign or a source book), and it would have any impact down to this point in time, it shouldn't be ignored. There may not be much like this, but lets say a deity/demigod changes alignment, dies, ect. If/when they get mentioned in starfinder it should be acknowledged. Where there is a change between pathfinder and starfinder's setting, there should be an in universe reason.

So I have friends voicing a desire to be a part of a noir themed campaign, so I thought I’d try my hand at it using Starfinder.

The problem is, where do I even begin?
How could one approach that Genre with interplanetary travel being common place? What place(s) could one use to most easily capture this flavor? Suggestions of plot lines and plotpoints that would fit the flavor as well as the Starfinder/Pathfinder universe?

Fair enough. Is there a way combat can be ended using diplomacy in starfinder? That is an important consideration.

Is the higher diplomacy skill superior to what an Overlord Connection Mystic can do with a few class features and spells to the function of a diplomancer?

For all we know, the Devourer -is- Golarion, rendered (semi-)concious by the influence of Rovagug, and thats why the gods had to do something.

But as we all know, there are no deities that resulted from either influence by another divinity, or from the merger of divinities. And Rovagug can’t create or misshape things like that.

*Puts away tin foil*

Actually, on another front.. I find it amusing this new deity(?) is called the devourer, considering devourers (the undead creature) exist.

As the title. What class (or build really) would make for the best Diplomancer in Starfinder?

Well, there is precidence for this, if the Demon Mother‘s Mask is any indication.

I would assume:

Yes, in fact I think any two humanoid races in Starfinder/Pathfinder are capable of having children unless otherwise stated. The question is more of, if it ever happens.

Mechanically, I’d use half-elf but replace Human with Lashunta at the minimum, and have them tend to get Minor Psychic Power or take the path of Phrenic Adept.

196b. The advertisements are for products that would only interest the followers of assorted divinities of the lower planes.

Low tier computers are low value, and high tier computers are usually large and virtually unhackable.

So why then would anyone ever attempt to steal a computer in Starfinder? Does your black market contact have a guy capable of making DC 40+ computers checks to unlock the machine? I doubt it. Even if he did, it would probably cost an arm and a leg (maybe literally), thus reducing the overall value of the machine.

1. I want that computer. Just to have.

2. I want to steal something.. Oh look, a computer.
3. I want the computer to use it.
4. I want something on the computer.
5. I want to sell the computer.
6. I want you to not have that computer.
7. A skittermander decided someone needs that computer more than you do.
ect.

Shadow plane is a reflection of the Prime. The prime has Absalom station. So would the shadow.

Golarion is not still in the system. It is by best guess not even still in our reality. The gods have confirmed it still exists and the descendants of the inhabitants are alive and well but it cannot be reached by technology or magic.

So there is no Golarion in the prime to mimic in the shadow.

You make a good point there, but that does mean that two planets disappeared, not just one.

Now, there is something of visualization here. These are two different planes of existence, with different denizens and slightly different locations.

Lets say there is a house, there very well may be a ruined version of it in the shadow plane.

Alright, lets look back then. Two people are standing in the same spot, one is watching a house being built in the material plane, the other is watching where the reflection would be. What does the one in the shadow plane see?

Does a separate group in the shadow plane build the house in about the same spot and have it in a ruined state, or.. do they see the bricks coming out of the aether.. suddenly assembling a house? Does the house not exist at one point and then suddenly does but as if it was already run down?

I get that it is a reflection, but to what level of detail and by what method is that perverse mirror maintained? Im not going to assume Rovagug's prison had a reflection, with a shadowy rovagug sitting in it. Of course..what planet did ZK's domain reside?

Am I just thinking too much about this?
