The door on the building to the northwest appears untrapped. The sharp tang of woodsmoke fills this building, where a giant fire pit set with roasting spits takes up the northern half of the room, positioned just below an open hole in the roof. Four cyclopes sit around the fire, tending to a huge pot of bubbling stew. The giants reach for their weapons as you enter.

The troll struggles helplessly as the Gate buries it in the ground, and Judah applies a potion to Lorant, bringing him back from the brink of death. Lorant gains 14 hp! Denied its initial target, the elemental instead targets Troll 3! It manages to hit once, burning the troll's arm.

Dylan attacks his foe, but his attack is less effective than he had hoped, and only succeeds in scratching the beast. Troll number 2 awakens, but finds itself still trapped by the Gate. Judah turns his elemental loose on the trolls, moving so as to evade possible attacks and get into position to help Lorant, who continues to bleed.

The trollhound tries to gnaw Dylan, but succeeds only in grabbing a mouthful of clothing. Troll number 3 lashes out at Dylan and the phantom (bite for the phantom, claws for Dylan). Both prove too well-protected for the troll to manage a hit. With a wicked crackling laugh, the elemental attacks Troll 1, but misses. Troll 1 retaliates by clawing stubbornly at the fire elemental, managing to both bite Gate and claw the elemental. The elemental proves too fast, but Gate takes 8 points of damage.

However, that does hit, and the grab is successful!

Judah screams as Lorant hits the ground. The trollhound in the pit continues to bay and scramble helplessly at the sides of the pit. Lorant bleeds heavily, his lifeblood flowing onto the ground. Trollhound 2 leaps at Dylan, narrowly missing his throat. Troll 3 strikes at Dylan with teeth and claw, managing to hit with a claw attack! Dylan takes 10 points of damage! With its opponent down, Troll 1 moves to engage with Judah, snapping at him, but Gate is faster and sweeps the troll from its feet before it can contact the mage.

The troll does need to move to attack (which is why it only got one attack instead of three). However, you are correct that the pit requires a Reflex save, which I forgot, and for that, I apologize. I also forgot that Gate has Reach and CB (bad GM, bad!).

Troll Reflex save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

So the troll makes its Reflex save, but Gate should have an AoO. Go ahead and take that, and I will rewrite the move. I have added numbers to the trolls, so that might help in keeping things straight. Even if you moved to your maximum extent, the troll could still reach you (it has a move of 30, and 10-foot reach). Does that make more sense? I want to be fair, especially under the circumstances.

"Your wish is... You wish me to be free? After all these decades! Thank you! Thank you! I owe a debt that I can never repay, but I can tell you of a secret trove a few miles southwest of this island. It is well hidden and well-protected, but that should hardly be an issue for such as yourselves. I will mark it on your map for you. The site is marked by a shipwreck in shallow water, but you will have to dive deep to find the trove." With that, she embraces Chumtooth and plants a kiss on his cheek, then becomes a vortex of water and disappears.

Rogar wrote:
"I suppose bein' smarter wouldn't harm." he finally says, meekly.

"As you wish." The marid nods, and Rogar does indeed feel a little smarter. Rogar has gained an inherent +1 bonus to Intelligence.

"And you, oh captain?" The marid queries.

Riori: Your caution is well-advised. The stone seems to hold trapped souls within. Touching it might subject you to the effect. Even looking upon it makes your mind reel, and you can feel it tugging at your soul.

Dantes wrote:
Dantes, the very model of dwarven greed, steps forward. "I wish to be more clever than I am already."

"So mote it be!" The marid replies. Instantly, Dantes feels smarter. Dantes gets an inherent +1 to his Intelligence score.

Feangrim wrote:
After a long pause, he turns to the woman in the water. "I wish to have the blood of the dragon turtle flow in my veins."

The marid thinks for a moment, as if sizing Faengrim up, then nods her head. "Let it be done!" For a moment, Faengrim feels nothing, but then a warming sensation takes hold of his body. Faengrim has gained the ability to breathe a 30 cubic ft. cloud of scalding steam once per day. Damage is 1d6 fire per level, and a Reflex save (DC 18) halves damage. This ability works equally well above or below the water.

Riori wrote:
"The immortal dreamstone that is supposed to be on this island, placed on the ground before me at my foot. If that is not possible, its current location."

"As you have said," the marid replies. At Riori's feet appears a small, yellow gemstone which seems to write with faces that appear and disappear along the surface of the stone.

"And what would you ask of me?" The marid asks Rogar.

I cannot leave this well unless... unless someone wishes me free. You see, I am a djinn. I can grant a single wish to each person, but for me to leave the well and return home, someone must sacrifice their wish to grant my freedom. The giants know of my power and have spent countless years forcing me to grant their wishes. Even so, their numbers have waned greatly over the years, and even now they face starvation. I fear the last of them may perish, leaving no one to wish me free. I would be trapped here for all eternity, alone.

I have lived in this well for centuries, since the waning days of Ghol-Gan. The current leader of the cyclopes is Ishtoreth, a monstrous example of his kind. He rules through might and fear. I just want to return to the open sea!

Dark Archive

Maps: Car. Crown || Skull & Shackles

Many decades have I been here, suffering under the one-eyed ones. Alas, I cannot depart without the generosity of one such as yourselves.

One correction to make, the name of the city is Sumitha. Ghol-Gan was the kingdom of the cyclopes.

Dark Archive

A beautiful, blue-skinned female figure with hair as green as seaweed rises from the pool, dressed in diaphanous clothing that leaves little to the imagination. She is not quite indecent, but borderline, certainly. She wears a diadem of gold and has pointed ears, not quite as prominent as those of the elves, but unmistakable.

She speaks, but her mouth does not move, and you hear her voice in your head. I am Vailea, guardian of this pool. I bid you welcome, if you come in peace.

As the troll strikes at Lorant, Gate lunges for it, barely managing to grab at it but is unable to drag it down (the troll's CMD is 22). Dylan strikes at troll 1, but all three attacks miss. Between Faengrim's savage attack and Dantes' barrage of magic missiles, the gargoyle is finished. It plummets to the ground and lies unmoving.

Combat over!

Aside from their arrows and masterwork composite longbows, the gargoyles have no treasure to speak of. The arrows are +1 arrows (100 can be recovered), +1 giant bane arrows (30), and +1 monstrous humanoid bane arrows (30).

From here, you can see a large well at the center of the city to the southwest, and a rough-hewn tunnel blocked by rockslides at the north and south. It appears the only way to go from here is back down the stairs. As you approach the well at the center of the city, you note tall, alabaster columns—one of which lies toppled and shattered to the west—surrounding this outdoor monument. Four short stairways climb to the low, circular wall of decorative archways that wraps around the raised dais, where a triangular pool reflects the sky overhead.

Judah fires at the newcomer, inflicting light damage. Lorant's strikes against the newly awakened troll follow this. The first one misses, but the other connects, and the troll goes limp again. The trollhound in the pit bays and scrambles at the sides of the pit but is unable to escape.

The other trollhound, however, bursts from around the corner, charging at Dylan! It misses, but the other troll also steps up behind it and swings at Dylan (Reach 10). This attack also misses.

Troll 1, now free of the pit, concentrates on Lorant. The dhampir is hit three times and goes down!

Sorry. It's been a busy two weeks. My wife's birthday was yesterday, and we had a big party this past weekend. Add to that things that needed doing around the house before that, and it adds up to time lost.

Rogar's bolt strikes home, but the gargoyle plucks the bolt from its forehead and glares at the dwarf. Dantes casts mirror image and instantly, four dwarves stand in a group, each mimicking the actions of the others. Faengrim cuts deeply into the body of Gargoyle 5, causing it to plummet from the sky and hit the ground, dead. Without pausing, he moves to the next nearest opponent, number 2.

I'm going to be on short notice until Monday. I have a con this weekend (CONTRAflow in New Orleans) and I'm prepping for it now. So if I am holding things up, please go ahead and bot me, and I'll be back in action next week, though I will try to check in as often as possible. If you are in the area or attending, I'm running three Savage Worlds scenarios: a science-fiction romp titled Moon at the Edge of Oblivion, a weird west session called Night of the Grizz, and a sneak peek at the upcoming Deadlands: Dark Ages called Sins of the Father.
