Daqas hurls another bomb, hitting the "dog" directly. Lorant steps in to save Dylan. Alika strikes, but her anger blinds her. Dylan snarls, "Flee!" at the beast, a deafening roar, but the creature ignores him. The false Judah moves through the creature's shadow, but to no effect (aside from setting up a flank for Judah).

It doesn't take long to find the shipwreck, using the marid's directions. A mess of driftwood lies scattered and broken on these rocky shoals, continually battered by the crashing waves. Seabirds roost among them, their calls eddying upon the wind.

It looks like the consensus is to go to the shipwreck first. If you want to prepare potions or do something else, we can retcon you having done so. I'll move things along.

Judah fires a crossbow bolt, but to no effect. The bolt tangles in the string and misses wildly. The "dog" snaps at Dylan, tearing away a bit of the bloodrager's skin and muscle. He falls, dying. Dylan takes 17 damage and is at -8.

Alika strikes first, her ghostly hand hitting the "dog" squarely in the face, but it doesn't flinch; its toughened skin absorbing the blow easily. Dylan meets with more success, tearing away a bit of the "dog's" flesh. The creature hardly seems to notice the attack, however. Judah's shadowy double makes its attack, but though it hits, the creature barely notices. It also does not bleed.

You feel fine, and you are aware of what transpired. You were in your body, but not in control. He was doing the driving, so to speak.

The spirit smiles an unsettling smile. Faengrim's eyes roll back in his head, and he feels a spreading chill. "At last!" he says. "To be physical once again!" He grabs a piece of parchment. "First, our bargain," he says, sketching a crude map to the sunken temple. "You have already looted my vault, but this will lead you to another hoard. And now, give me the dreamstone!"

Snatching up the stone, he intones some magic phrases. A few heartbeats later, a bright light engulfs Faengrim, and he sinks to the ground. The light fades, and the dreamstone drops to the ground, inert. Faengrim gradually opens his eyes. The spirit has passed from his body, as promised, leaving him no worse for the wear.

The spirit appears to be who it claims to be. In the basement, the spirit approaches you eagerly. "I must ask a favor: to borrow a body long enough to complete my ritual. Will one of you allow me to control you to accomplish this? In exchange, I offer all of my worldly possessions, in addition to another hoard in an air-filled underwater temple a few miles away. What say you?"

Right now, it's full daylight.

The dog charges Lorant, intending to Bull Rush him off the side of the bridge. The beast hits Lorant with the force of a fully-loaded wagon, causing him to involuntarily step back five feet... into empty air!

Lorant, I'll give you a Reflex save (DC 15) to catch the lip of the bridge...

A search of the upper levels reveals nothing. It would seem that, from here, the only place to go is across the bridge. A slender stone bridge arches gracefully over a roaring waterfall here, linking the gatehouse to a fortified manor house clinging to the cliff on the far side. Gathering your belongings, you step cautiously out onto the span. You are halfway across when you hear a loud barking from the other side. Looking up, you see a dog. At least, you think it's a dog. Perhaps it was once a dog. In any case, it glares at you balefully and braces itself to attack.

With the giant statues taken care of and the leader of the giants downed, you feel that, while there may be more to explore here, the giants have been broken, and you have the artifact you are seeking. It would be, perhaps, a good time to head back to the fort and the ship.

Which is your GM's way of saying that you have found everything to be found here.

GM's hot take: AD&D's (and every version of it since's) Good v Evil Law v Chaos Alignment system is arbitrary and dumb.

This is one reason that I got rid of alignment in my homebrew world. I replaced it with the allegiances system from d20 Modern.

RPGGGM wrote:
On that note I hate alignment specific spells too. Spells and abilities like detect evil if they exist at all should only detect people who are directly in opposition to your goals at the time.

I likewise got rid of all alignment-based spells. Paladins do not exist in Jenneria. They were replaced by the warpriest. I was never a fan of the idea that LG has this bastion of paragonhood, but no other alignment does.

"Miserable molecule o' mildew! Ye almost hit me!" Rogar shouts as he scurries away from the statue, which strikes at him as he goes, connecting and leaving a bloodied wound across his back. Rogar takes 27 points of damage! He tosses another bomb, blackening the construct and leaving it blinded again. Prasi casts haste on her companions (except Faengrim).

Riori hurls her black starknife at Faengrim's foe, following it with two more. The latter two deflect harmlessly off the statue's form, one of them shattering in the process (and the other being broken). The adamantine weapon, however, slices cleanly through the statue's neck. The head topples off and shatters against the floor, the remainder of the statue crumbling to rubble soon after, leaving behind a slender falchion.

Chumtooth hurls his harpoon at the other statue, aiming for the lower body. His weapon sinks into the stone leg.

Insert Dantes' action here.

Faengrim, his foe gone, wastes no time in moving to the other statue. He swings his sword against the stone behemoth, chipping away pieces of it. He further attacks it with a claw swipe and a bite, inflicting even more damage (though it pains him greatly).

Waiting on Dantes.

Rogar starts things off with a bang, tossing a sand bomb at the nearest statue. Prasi begins another performance, and Riori flies up out of reach and readies her starknife. Chumtooth hurls his harpoon and strikes the first statue, seconds before Faengrim strikes. Dantes gets clear, drawing closer to Chumtooth. Faengrim's blade hits hard, slashing into the stone. The statue is heavily damaged, but still remains intact and fighting.

The damaged statue moves with impossible speed; its stone weapon slashing three times in rapid succession. Faengrim is hit twice, leaving deep cuts across his flesh. The other statue lumbers towards Rogar, swinging blindly. The blow whizzes over the dwarf's head.

Prasi stops her performance, but the melody lingers. Chumtooth again hurls his harpoon and connects. It magically returns to his hand, and this time, he sinks it deep into the cyclops' chest. Once more, it magically reappears in his hand. It is Faengrim, however, who takes the giant down, his two-handed sword biting deeply into the giant's Achilles tendon! The cyclops staggers and falls. It is an easy task to finish him from there.

A quick search of the cyclops' belongings turns up a magical suit of hide armor (giant-sized), a magical greatclub, and two vials of liquid. With everyone fully healed, the group sets their watches and lies down to rest. Though the night is filled with sounds in the distance, none of them come near the balcony, and your rest is undisturbed. You awaken, refreshed and ready to face the day.

Determined to continue your explorations, you decide to tackle the double doors that lie to the north of the entry room. You penetrate the doors and enter a small, empty antechamber with yet another set of doors. Pushing these portals aside, you see six columns carved to resemble huge cyclopes in decorative armor supporting the ceiling of this immense chamber. Fallen rubble blocks passageways to the north and southeast, but double doors still stand in the north wall, and another set of double doors leads farther south. In the northeast corner, a giant animal hide is stretched across the floor beside a pile of bones stripped of meat. Several dinosaur skulls hang from the western wall.

Sitting dejectedly among the bones and gnawing on a femur is a massive cyclops. This 30-foot tall monstrosity has a single bloodshot eye beneath a massive horn on his forehead. He chews absently on the remnants of meat from the leg bone and looks up as you enter. When he sees you, he rises and roars a challenge!

Everyone except Dantes is up!
