The Event (RP Sample):

Violant was, as usual, working out the equations and the mathematics behind the arcane spells to manipulate them, as part of her research. Life in Varisia, thanks to the scholarship she was offered a full-ride scholarship to the Twilight Academy in Galduria to study both mathematics and some esoteric magics as a wizard, was going well. The two areas of focus were allowed to blend and mesh together, thanks to the school's odd and often non-standard methods of teaching. She was just about to start writing down a formalized procedure for modifying the manifestation point of a magic, such that Breathe Fire could actually manifest out of the hands instead of the mouth, when she heard a knock on the door.

"This is the residence of the Aiuvarin mathematician-mage Violant Turra, correct?" As soon as she heard that, she took immediate pause. For some reason, ever since learning the origin of what people call her, Aiuvarin, she felt nothing but pure disgust. Did the others who spoke that name not know from whence it came? Did they not know it was a constant reminder of her shortened lifespan compared to her mother? Did they not realize what it was they were referencing?! Before she realized what she was doing, acid was dripping out of her mouth in anger and giving her magic-alchemical burns over her lips again.

"I'm coming, just hold on--" she said as she got up from the chair she had been sitting in, put her hat and glasses on, and walked to the door leading out of her residence. When she opened the door, she saw one of the mathematics professors, an unusually-tall gnome named Ati, standing in front of her with an unusually somber expression. Usually the fellow was extremely jubilant, rushing from one library to the next, cross-referencing alchemical, magical, and mathematical formulae in an absolute frenzy. Now, it looks like if he was going to collapse into tears at any moment! "Hm? Ati, what's wrong?"

"Lastwall... Lastwall has been struck with some sort of Necromantic Weapons, Miss Turra. Roslar's Coffer was the first location struck, and our reports show no one made it out alive. I'm sorry but... your parents are dead, Violant." The next thing she knew, she was collapsed on the floor, crying and spilling mouth-acid all over herself and reeling from the pain. After that, she was headed to some form of counseling... she was never really good with perceiving time. Sometimes she felt like she had innate divination magics, other times it feels like she could not remember what she even ate for breakfast that morning.

After a trip to a local cleric to heal the worse-than-she-thought burn wounds, covering all over her face, she couldn't take it anymore, and began bawling. She thought she didn't care about her parents. She put her faith entirely in the triad of gods she worshipped, not the parents who tried to convince her to embrace one half or the other of her heritages. Yet here she was, crying and burning her mouth more with the dragon-acid leaking from her mouth. All she can say to the local Cleric is muttered, incomprehensible apologies in Utopian, as she often does when she's overwhelmed. Apologies in Utopian were just formulae used to indicate that one had done something wrong and that the speaker will attempt to fix it; there were no implications of emotions in there for her to screw up with misdelivered facial expressions.

Backstory:

Violant Turra is a 25 year old recent graduate of the Twilight Academy in Varisia, having moved on to find her place in life after the Radiant Fire was detonated over her hometown in Roslar's Coffer. She's a half-elven woman born to a 200-year old Elf mother and a 50-year old Human father. Her life was... admittedly a bit unorthodox for a half-elf, as instead of being shunted off to live with one parent or the other, both of them tried to raise them together. The emphasis, however, is on that they tried, as they constantly butted heads over and over. At first, it was on how early they should begin the schooling of their chil. At the next point, it was about whether she was old enough to undergo a transition in her life. At the next, it was whether she was old enough to leave home and attend University at the Twilight Academy. Before she knew it, time flew and she was running away with an offer to said University in hopes her parents would either separate, or get along.

After she had gotten the news, it was only a semester or two until she graduated, so she decided to move to Varisia for the time being, making her living helping her professors mass copy notes and serving as both a tutor of magic and mathematics. Barely making it by, she decided to, quite literally, pick a random spot on the map that would be suitable to adventurers. She used an imported clockwork device to randomly decide, without bias, which of the places to head to... and that place was Breachill, in Isger, and she thus set out for adventure. She did have an offer from Leipstadt, but she deferred the offer for a year to actually come to terms with her recent loss, as opposed to merely letting it stew for decades to come.

Appearance and Personality:

Violant, to sum it up in a few words, is half-elven half-human. Her ears are clearly pointed and slightly bigger than a human's, and she makes no attempt to hide this in any way, shape or form. Her blue-green eyes would be uncharacteristically vivid for a human, yet too dull for an elf's. Her blond hair is something that would be acceptable for a human and an elf. She has a noticeable, unhealable burn scar around her lips, where a tiny inch of draconic influence in her family... leads to her occasionally oozing corrosive acid onto her skin and leaving a scar in its place.

While she's normally extremely shy, timid, and introverted, there are a few subjects that can either draw immense ireful hour-long rants, or excited gleeful information dumps that would leave even a Gishvit satiated. When you ask her about her faith or her studies, she seemingly suddenly transitions into a much, much more extroverted, bubbly person that you would ever expect. But if you ask about her family, or even mention Findeladlara or Aroden, she suddenly starts leaking acid out of her mouth, worsening the chemical burn that's seemingly always present on her face. She gets so mad she quite literally will spit venom.

Her clothes portray an older spellcasting tradition and teaching method than she actually uses. She'll wear clothes that seem remarkably similar to the Tien Haramaki, even if they provide little to no benefit, a practice common among some spellcasters to provide some miniscule form of defense-- but hers is too worn to function as such. She wears glasses for her poor vision, as well as a hat befitting of a stereotypical witch, more than a Wizard. Around her neck at all times are three holy symbols (Alseta, Imot, and Otolmens), along with her bonded item from which she can drain some magical energy.

Having lost her family and having to take the odd tutoring job to support herself, Violant is eager to showcase the practical applications of her knowlege... but no one will adopt the weird shaped spells she specializes in, so she reluctantly agrees to the ocassional adventuring job. As a result, she's overly cautious when adventuring when it comes to one exception: doors. She's also very reluctant to make friends, extremely worried that one party will outlive the other. Her hygiene could admittedly be better, but it is serviceable.

Opinions about her at Breachhill are... mixed, mostly because she's a new transplant to the town, and will likely leave for Leipstadt within the year. She can be seen around any kind of formalized work, be it some magical treatise, or some mathematical textbook, or even documents on a language. As a result, this leads everyone to, quite correctly, believe she's the studious kind. Were it not for the bombing of her hometown, she would have already been at Leipstadt teaching right now. Rumors abound about what the mysterious new rambling half-elven tutor are plenty, but those that speak Utopian realize she's just some mathematician who's here to clear her mind.

Misc Fluff:

Has the effects of a PF1e Tongues curse in battle, with Utopian being the language of choice. Even prior to the actual Oracle mechanics come into play at level 2, she still is intended to have a bit of Time Oracle flavor. She self-titles herself an Evoker, even if the curriculum at her alma mater has long since passed the point of using the Thassilonian and Azlanti schools of magic.

20 questions:

1. What emotion best describes your character? Anxiety with a twinge of guilt. Violant was not with her family when they perished in the first stroke of the Radiant Fire, and thus is constantly afraid that everything she loves will be taken away again, and feels massive pangs of guilt at times as well.

2. What emotion does your character evoke in others? How do others react to you? The usual reaction that others have to Violant is pity, either because they know of her past with Roslar's Coffer, or they see the unmistakable chemical burn at her lips from uncontrolled use of magic when stressed.

3. What does your character need most? If your character had everything he or she needed, why go on an adventure? What Violant needs most is peace of mind that she won't lose everything again. She would go on an adventure to discover things about herself in a heartbeat, to take her mind off the impending life-change that is settling down to become a professor in a nation she has barely ever been in.

4. What is your character's goal in life? Violant's main and primary goal in life is to secure her position as a professor of mathematics at Leipstadt, to which she's already well on her way to accomplishing. Her secondary goal, more pertinent to adventuring, is to feel safe. She cannot feel safe when something is threatening where she lives!

5. How does your character believe this goal can be accomplished? She believes that, with enough time to heal (roughly one year or so), she'll be stable enough to reliably hold down a position as a professor. A fair bit of soul searching will be required. This goes for both her goal as a future professor of Leipstadt, and for actually finding some form of peace.

6. Where did your character come from? Violant is the only child of an Elven mother and a Human Father in Roslar's Coffer, the now-destroyed town in the now-destroyed nation of Lastwall. She was raised within both of her cultures, though she doesn't exactly take to either.

7. When did you grow up? Violant, to put it lightly, was too absorbed in academics to properly grow up until her parents outright died while she was away in Varisia for her education, having to face the reality of the situation far quicker than she would have like.

8. What values does your character hold? Violant believes first and foremost in order and equality. due to her being raised in both her parents' culture, and seeing that they both are foolish enough to think themselves superior or special. No rule should apply to a group of people, and not to another. As a professor and follower of both Imot and Otolmens, mathematics holds a much higher place in her life than even many-a-professor. As a result, she constantly seeks both the beautiful and destructive patterns in things.

9. How does your character dress? To put it lightly, she dresses eccentrically. She holds on to what she considers the past, before her parents died, with white-knuckled grasping fists. She wears a torn Haramaki which offers very little to no protection after it has been worn to practically a shell of its former self. She wears what would possibly be termed a witch's hat at all times, mostly to shadow her ever-present burn scar near her lips. She wears circular, large-glasses as well at all times, to account for inherited poor vision from her father.

10. What are your character's means? Violant still lives like she's a University student, surviving off of the cheapest drink and food around, however bland or tasteless it may be. She has saved up a bit of money from which she can live comfortably off of for a few weeks, but she would rather make what little she has left last.

11. What are your character's personal tastes? In terms of actual tastes, she likes anything bland and salty, preferring consistency and unvaried textures to anything fancy. She'll even eat salt plain, and is known to carry the stuff around from time to time. She does not[/i[ have a healthy diet, and her Elven bit of biology has saved her from her body actually portraying her diet. As for what she does for fun, she can be seen reciting, memorizing, and modifying formulae of all kinds to twist them into some desired result, as that was her main area of focus within magic.

12. What are your character's opinions? Violant is generally accepting of most people for who they are, provided they don't infringe on others. She is also deeply religious, with her tailor-made triad of neutral gods at least. She tries her hardest to look past who someone is on the outside, to see who they are on the inside. She'll happily get along with other magic users, [i]especially if they like the patterns inherent in it more than the actual usage potential.

13. What is your character's comfort zone? When Lastwall fell, Violant lost most, if not every, comfort zone of hers. Nothing ever truly felt as safe, except for working out the relation between mathematics and magic in some library or bookstore, unbothered by anything else. She can spend literal hours doing this, even ignoring basic necessities like food and drink, just because she outright forgets.

14. Who has had the biggest impact on your character's life? As much as she loathes to admit it, her parents were the biggest influence on her life by a mile, whether positive or negative. Her father was strict and very traditional, and only readily agreed to the arrangement to raise the child so he could start a new life. Her mother was much less traditional, but was slow to raise the child, being used to being around Kyoni elves her entire life. As a result, Violant summarily believes she's somewhere between the two cultures, and belongs to neither.

15. Who has had the biggest impact on your character's life? Firstly, she can quite literally spit acid if she so desires, owing to some draconic ancestry somewhere on, presumably, her father's side. Secondly, when in times of high-stress (like a battle), she reverts to speaking Utopian, seeing it as a more mathematical and logical language than either of Varisian, Taldane, or Elven, which thus requires less thought (Tongues curse). Thirdly, she's self-titled as an evoker, even if only because it's far easier to manipulae those spells than it is those of any other Thassilonian or modern school.

16. What kind of story does your character belong in? Originally she was written as a Tyrant's Grasp character, and I'm still playing her as such in a different campaign. Her backstory was initially very basic as a result of her being my first PC, and thus she could fit comfortably anywhere with a bit of modification.

17. What role does your character fill? As what in 1e would be considered an Evoker, she's especially prepared to fulfill the role of the arcane magic user and spell-blaster in the group. Out of combat, she'd still be a mess of a person, but she would be the one to turn to regarding all types of magic, especially the arcane.

18. What should the other players know about your character? As essentially a visitor to Breachhill, no-one should know much about her. She'd likely have gone of out of her way to meet anyone with an interest in the arcane or mathematics, and would have become instant friends with anyone interested in both at once. Otherwise, she would essentially be a hermit who is seen with her nose in a writing kit and books all day.

19. What is your play style? Normally, I'm interested equally in both combat and RP. But seeing as this is my first character (rewritten into a 2e character), and I tend to favor 1e's combat system, my focus here would be on the roleplaying aspect.

20. How do you want your character to die? She probably wouldn't retire from any mathematics-related position unless she goes senile and is forced out, so ideally she'd die right after finals of a year at Leipstadt.
