I think I'm going to bow out. I am available to post 2-3 times a day, but it seems like every time I can, no one else is. Then I end up holding people up the days I am gone most of the time and end up posting late. (On days I travel like today.) Never the twain shall meet. Yada yada.

Who did I evaluate? Who is the head of the city watch? I'm confused. Vigilance greets Kendra with a firm handshake. Anything more would be inappropriate in the tiefling's eyes. The investigator then wanders the room avoiding talking to most of the people just so he can sit back and watch them instead. If any come up to him to introduce themselves, he politely does the same - without pronouns of course - and does his best to bore them out of conversation so that they leave.
"Disappearing hooftracks. Clean separation between head and body. Done from horseback... downward motion. Unfortunate that horse can either fly or is insubstantial." The tiefling stops for a second as if to consider something. "Maybe wagon pulled up on side of road to carry horse from there. No. No. No wagon tracks. Trail cold. Will have to start new file and eventually catch culprit when able to figure out how to arrest or kill spirits. For now, bury body. Of no more use. Would interview widow. Definite motive. Do not think her capable of force or magic necessary for this murder though." Vigilance's yellow eyes focus one last time on the body as if to store all of the visual information for later. He then wanders off towards their carriage muttering to himself about pegasi and the local availability there of.
Hope you don't mind me showing almost no difference between "sane" Vigilance and insane Vigilance.
Vigilance stares at the body in curiosity; his yellow eyes taking in the blood and gore without expression. Inside the tiefling's mind, however, a small crack starts to etch down the wall his will has made between the evil coursing through his blood and the humanity given to him by the church of Abadar. "Deserved or not. Murder is crime. Perpetrator not normal criminal however. Easy assumption." As he is looking over the corpse, a smile of joy begins to slide across the tiefling's mouth. It takes the detective a moment to realize this before returning to his normally taciturn expression. Those paying attention, however, notice a slight shudder arch its way down his back. "Move away from crime scene. Need to look for clues and gawkers make for distraction." Vigilance scours the body and the scene with vigor and thoroughness.
Vigilance awakes at the commotion and stands up slowly, grabbing his rapier in the process. "Show of strength in beating them senseless. Much more effective," the tiefling says in a voice close to a yawn. He then begins to move to put on his armor and head towards the door.
Vigilance's attention drifts until Lament brings out the harrow deck. He follows along with the rest and stares emotionless at the fiend card. "Could have told this much just based on work done for Professor. Searched dark places for darker information. Professor not one to dabble with evil lightly." The tiefling's yellow eyes glance over the others slowly. "Also not one to seek darkness lightly. Corruption... too easy to come by. Like alcoholic offered a sip. One sip too much."
Now that the men have officially backed off, Vigilance sheathes his rapier and stands to the side letting the priest and bard do their work. "Self defense legally acceptable under circumstances. Be thankful companions have healing skills. Avoid violence to others to avoid violence to self. Important lesson." He then looks at the barmaid and bartender. "Perhaps need to hire guard for foreseeable future."
As the man moves to stand up and get back in the fight, the elf delivers a devastating blow to the man's jaw which turns Vigilance's thrust into the man's shoulder into a vicious thrust into his unprotected throat. Withdrawing his bloodied rapier from the man, the tiefling looks at the rest of the men around them. "Leave now and this one might be saved still. Doubt this, but hope important to keep." Noting their lack of willingness to comply, he shrugs. "Stubbornness rewards itself," Vigilance says in a drone, his rapier flicking around to stab at one of the men now holding the elf.
"Had the chance to walk away. Apologies." Vigilance's rapier flies in to strike the man as he stands up.
The tiefling approaches the men with determination, his rapier drawn. "Will not lower self to fisticuffs because you were too dumb to bring weapons," the tiefling sneers. His rapier flies low towards the lead ruffian's leg attempting to trip the man to the ground, the tiefling's leg whipping around to help in the effort.
In my defense, I was attempting to make the fascinate work better by not pissing them off after Lament started. Vigilance wasn't going to stand by either way... whoops.Haha! Thanks for defending me. I am an innocent flower! I think it was going to come to this anyway. I cursed us with the 1 on my diplomacy. Haha. It wasn't about defending Lament so much as their threatening to break the law. He's not that kind of good guy.

Vigilance stands and approaches the men calmly. "Civilization requires sacrifices. Personal freedom ends at the freedom of another. Ask that you leave peacefully. Will make you do so otherwise." The tiefling's eyes blaze with purpose as he stares the men down. "Haven't broken law yet. Being mouthy, uneducated leech on society not against law... unfortunately."
During the trip, the man known as Vigilance Hall stares out of the window, which is difficult as he is seated between two of his traveling companions. The effect is that the tiefling's eerie yellow eyes stare almost directly through the person to his left the.entire.trip. As the group reaches the make-shift inn, Vigilance exits the carriage and pays his fee without comment. It didn't bother him that everyone charged him more for everything in this country. Prejudice was an unfortunate side effect of a place lacking culture and wealth. This was just another symptom for him to treat. When the group enters the building, Vigilance turns to follow them. Fully intending on listening to their conversation for information and not especially taking part in it, he lags behind a few steps. He sits at a nearby table, in no way stealthily, and listens in to the others begin to talk. The group eventually turns to conversation about their connection with the Professor, and Vigilance takes this opportunity to approach. "Questions are important. Answers even more so. Professor's death unfortunate, but not unexpected." With this, the lanky man sits down in a chair he has pulled with him. His gaze meets everyone's at the table as he scoots the chair in. "Worked with Professor for years. His questions darker than most. Hired me to find dark answers. Would play drum for him, but not paid for that service. Also, untrained in music." Vigilance's hat falls off in his quick movement to scoot in, but is caught against one of his twisted horns and he smoothly moves it back into place. "Professor interesting man. Makes sense that he collected interesting acquaintances. Hope none of you murdered him. Would hate to serve justice to possible allies," the tiefling says as if he was stating how unfortunate it would be to stub his toe on the way to bed.
I'm experiencing two issues that I mentioned in the d20 chat. 1. I only see a blank grid. No map.
Looking forward to this. As far as Vigilance in melee goes, he should be fine. One of the bonuses of being an investigator is I can have him cook up some more buff-type potions for himself if it looks like we're going to need stronger fighters. Of course, none of this will matter if he's lynched before the end of the first scene by angry villagers.
I think I have Vigilance adjusted and ready to go. The extra skills I took were Acrobatics and Knowledge (History).
Have you considered the Rogue archetype Investigator? Yeah, it doesn't have the same emphasis on knowledge skills as the advanced class guide class. No big deal. I'm not willing to change Vigilance that much as I'm quite attached to him now. I'll just roll up someone I hopefully like just as much.
I couldn't really find a way to make anything but the Investigator class work for my concept of Vigilance so I'll be submitting something different later today.
I was in the same game as Charles Bloodgrave. Would love another shot at RPing Vigilance as I love how odd he turned out. If you'd accept Investigator from the Advanced Class Guide, that'd be awesome, but if not, I'll remake him as a bard or something. Edit: Since no Tieflings, I'll change that too. His crazy doesn't come from just demon blood. Pretty sure he's schizophrenic.

The tiefling turns to Charles in turn. "No intention of leaving town without fixing it. Still, need knowledge to prepare just as much as items prepare. Judge in town. Easy fix. Be back soon either way." Looking to Kendra, Vigilance continues. "Have help attempt to find key or list while away. Would be efficacious." Finally, he turns to Zadrol. "Should leave now. Hopefully be back in time to put all known information together for best effort in Restlands."
Vigilance eyes the note on the cover of the Manual of the Order of the Palatine Eye and nods to himself. "Can take care of this one. Feel at home with courthouses as investigator. Know tricks of system. Maybe judge has key. Can convince him to share knowledge inside for good of Professor's work." He eyes the rest of the group as they seem to be divvying up the books. "While there, can find list of fire victims too. Wonders of bureaucracy," the tiefling says with absolutely no hint of sarcasm in his voice.
I've been dog-sitting lately so every time I sit down to write, I've got puppy eyes staring up at me. Apologies for how long it took Vigilance to realize this was turning into a case for him to solve. This is probably the happiest he's been since he arrived at the funeral.
Now that the books contain information about the Professor and his mission, Vigilance shows much more interest. Walking up smoothly to Charles, the tiefling grabs the journal out of his hand unceremoniously and begins leafing through the mentioned entries. "Agree with Charles. Still, need information about fire too. Kendra, did Professor ever get that list of victims? Cults bad for system. Necromantic cults moreso." Vigilance hands the book back to Charles as if he had politely borrowed it then leans down to the trunk and examines the other books for any possible link to the fire.
I'm trying to decide how Vigilance would react to such dangerous books being opened after his warning. Apparently, right now, it's shock.
Vigilance studies Alderly intensely. "Better to either lock books away or burn if dangerous to society. Either way. Trust Professor to know best place for them. Books in trunk for reason. Best to leave alone until movement." It wasn't that Vigilance specifically mistrusted Alderly, but the tiefling could not shake the feeling that the Professor had very good reasons for leaving those books locked in a trunk and not on a shelf. Poisonous knowledge creates poisonous environment. Respect Professor, but one does not come away clean after immersing in such knowledge.
Vigilance's eyes grow large at both the amount of money offered and the danger the books in the Professor's care might cause. Abadar's gifts come in form of large amounts of money. This task must be His work. Would also enjoy helping Professor's spawn. Old time's sake. Sentimentality is known weakness, but mission obviously important to Abadar as well. Win. Win. "Yes. Will do whatever needed. Crime slow back home anyway." The tiefling eyes the others in the room awaiting their own responses. It was far too soon for him to trust them, yet, but it seemed they might be working together on this. Preparation important. Never climb cliff without knowing person who holds the rope.
Vigilance shuffles his feet nervously. Public speaking is definitely not his thing. Still... "Professor had excellent penmanship and grammar in correspondence," he manages. Satisfied with his thorough compliment of the man he once saved, Vigilance stands back, thankful that he is now able to observe without attention.
Sorry for my absence. Sunday is my day where I run Reign of Winter for my friends in the real life. 7 hours of gaming later, Snows of Summer spoilers: Pale Tower conquered and I had Radosek's goat commit suicide by jumping out the window after his death. Fun was had by all.
Vigilance watches the spectacle with unease. His grip adjusts on the casket so that he can see the mob more clearly. "Poor taste. Funereal ritual important. People should go home. Enjoy benefits of lawful society. Mob activity benefits only chaos. His distaste for the people ahead of them is evident in the sneer starting to spread across his lips. Still, the investigator's instincts fire into motion and he analyzes the group trying to figure out what exactly their intentions are.
The
Vigilance looks at Kendra and attempts an expression of sincerity that mainly looks like he's swallowed a bug. "Ritual important. Will gladly bear pall. Your father was... useful to society. Strong compliment. Assuredly." Feeling confident in his social exchange, Vigilance nods briefly to Kendra and goes back to inspecting the area around him. Suitable burial arrangements. Remember to not speak out loud during ceremony. Considered inappropriate. Remember to not ask Professor's daughter about means and location of death. Not appropriate. Must sake curiosity in other ways. Silent ways.
Vigilance sat at his poorly constructed desk and rested his feet on the edge. Crime in this part of the city had pretty much fallen to zero lately. Maybe not because of him, but Vigilance was fine with the result nonetheless. Still, the night left him with only paper work to do, and he had finished inscribing his journal hours ago. These were the rough nights. The nights where the city left him to his own devices. Stuck in own head. Not pleasant place. Could be worse. Could have company in here. Lucky. Relatively. His eyes strayed to the letter he had received earlier that evening. Address familiar. Professor. Six months, two weeks, four days since last response. Vigilance's head cocked to the side in thought. Six months, two weeks, four days and seven hours. But, who is counting? His lithe fingers grasped the envelope and opened it careful not to tear the piece of paper inside. Opening the message, his eyes traced the words on the page carefully and thoroughly. Unexpected death. Unpleasant. Cultural courtesy suggests I should attend funeral. Will probably need to converse with others. Unfortunate. The tiefling's face slowly lost its sour expression as he lowered his legs to the floor and stood up. Professor was important part of town. Civic duty to attend and mourn loss of important tool. Besides, maybe Professor was murdered and there will be clues and suspects in attendance. Look on bright side. Twirling his sword cane in a slow circle, Vigilance stood and walked across the length of his spartan office and living quarters. Need to take lengthy look at definition of bright side. Will do right after funeral.
Skill Info: My nine trained skills are disable device, disguise, Escape Artist, Heal, Knowledge (Arcana), Perception, Sense Motive, Spellcraft, and Stealth. Anything else there is just Hero Lab printing out skills that it finds important or stuff that Vigilance gets bonuses to. (Bluff/Religion/Nobility.) Sorry for the confusion! Hero Lab doesn't care what I want.
In turn, I was wrong on my ranks for Religion/Nobility as they should both be 4 not 7 since they're untrained. Fixed both so they're more readable.
Vigilance, surprised by his missing backpack, mutters a curse under his breath and looks towards the kitchen. "May not be anything. Still, should investigate. I will come with," the tiefling says to the woman who suggested that they find the cause of the commotion. He looks around at the rest of the patrons. "Items missing. Screaming. Situation smells rotten. Much like ale."
My PC recently exploded so I am entirely too envious right now. Quick, let me google how to "unexplode PC."
Vigilance eyes the different characters around the bar warily. His cat-like pupils flit from customer to customer trying to drink in as much information as possible. Interesting crowd. Some educated by scribes. Some educated by streets. All here for reason. Before he can stop himself, the tiefling mutters out loud, "Reason most likely not soup."
Vigilance eyes the straw warily before taking a slow sip of the ale through it. "Thank you. Not dignified, but clean. Safe." Turning to the armored woman next to him, Vigilance looks at her, his straw still firmly planted in his lips creating a ridiculous contrast to the serious glint of his cat-like green eyes. "As for thinking out loud. Habit. Try to break it, but life gets in the way. More important things to do. Sad, serious things. Sometimes even soup things." The tiefling's gaze follows the small girl as she leaves before turning back to the new target, the bowl of soup. Did not order soup. Still got some.Soup must be safe. Soup usually safe.
Wait, so 3 all together? Whoops. I'll add Child of the Temple +1 Knowledge (Religion)/(Royalty) to Vigilance since it fits the best.
Vigilance's gaze searches around the crowded bar room. Looks like it's beginning to bustle. I wonder what the perfect population is for civility before a chosen culture becomes chaotic... overpopulated. Really must stop drinking. Become sentimental while drinking. Start thinking about statistics. Changing the world. As the lanky man stands from his table, his knee length, navy-blue pea coat falls away revealing the hardened leather armor underneath. His wide-brimmed hat slips back slightly revealing a shortened, twisted horn the color of ripe peaches hiding in close-cropped black hair. Noticing his hat is askew, the man lifts his walking cane up and tips the hat back into place. Really must buy better hat. Barely fits. Private investigation business is sound job for moral well-being, but does not pay for fine attire. Hope no one noticed the horn. My kind most likely not welcome in superstitious areas, especially Ustalav. Vigilance approaches the bar once more, setting his flagon of ale down, almost entirely untouched. "Well done. Now, less dirt in the next cup. Done with this one." Something to be said about sentimentality. Very short something. But, something. |
