I can leave behind the heavy equipment for now if subtlety and diplomacy are the watchwords of the moment. Too many armed strangers milling about the town and I fear we shall give ourselves away to our quarry."[/b]

Our quarry will be suspecting us in any case, sir. Perhaps some of us can play the armed deputies as a diversion, while a few of us investigate on the sidelines?

Now that I am a deputy, I suppose I'll need to be prepared like everyone else.

Uldhazel deftly strings up her longbow and proceeds toward the door to follow the others to the stables.

We have a capable seeming crew here. We will catch your man Sheriff, however a more specific promise of remuneration may be necessary as we proceed. Also, can you please provide me with a detailed description of the girl as well as this Varnis fellow?

Is it something that can be used again with the proper spoken word?"

With some preparation I think I can find the answer to this question. I will need to think on this.

Oooh, it's a spell to create a zone of silence, I think. My parents used to use something like that when I was asking lots of questions while they were trying to work!

Is that so? And yet it leaves the trace of a conjuration rather than that of a glamer. This is interesting magic.

Spellcraft 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16 Not sure if "Elven Magic +2" applies. Either way she fails the check.

I can prepare a cantrip to decipher these runes later. I cannot make it out now. But these runes definitely are magical. A conjuration. This is what I sensed upstairs. I still do not know what it would be, though.

When Gargos is finished, Uldhazel will also have a look - pulling out her her lense and uttering a short incantation.

Cantrip: Detect Magic

Appraise with lense:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25

Elven Magic:Add +2 to identify a magic item

Know Arcana,Planes,Religion: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

Uldhazel tries to identify and decipher the runes as well.

Linguistics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

"Carawyn, in order to find the girl we need to look for clues. Was she in any kind of trouble before this? Who did she hang out with? Let us find them and interrogate them or stake them out? We need to act now and find out what really happened before the sheriff sets the wheels of justice in motion."

ie. Varnis the Varisian - Uldhazel does not know about him yet.

Uldhazel returns to the common room. Listening to Irian she nods and then responds:

"Hello. I am Uldhazel. There are several facets to this case that are interesting to me, which is why I am here to assist in the investigation if I may.

I have a "heightened" sense of awareness at times, which comes from my arcane training, and I definitely had a feeling that something dark was afoot this morning - so that when the commotion here started I was not surprised. This kind of foreshadowing is not so common for me...it worries me..and piques my interest.

As you say, Sir - the victim was killed cleanly with a decisive cut to the throat. If that is the case, what purpose did it serve for the killer to follow up by savagely gashing the body and making a bloody mess? A compelling question. Or were there two perpetrators? Maybe it is a red herring to confuse us.

I was able to detect a lingering aura of conjuration magic in the room....it seemed to be a residue from a low level conjuration, so I am doubtful that we are dealing with a summoned killer or conjured escape. I am trying to think of what kind of spell or effect it was. Of course I might be wrong...I am not an expert in this kind of magic.

The glass shards are only inside the room, suggesting that someone or some creature came in from outside. Unfotunately it appears any tracks outside have been trodden over or washed away. And what of the girl who screamed. Did anyone recognize her from her voice. Where is she now"?

We now need more clues. Does anyone else have something to share?"

To P'Aye in Elven:

Spoiler:
"I am not clairvoyante, dear Strangerfriend -if that is what you ask. But I do specialize in Divination magic and use it to excercise my analytical skills, sp that it may seem as if I have foresight to some."

To no one in particular:

Oh dear. I fear the scene of crime is overrun. I must hurry down before the fresh mud of the streets is trampled over. If only we had a skilled tracker with us.

Uldhazel pauses briefly to observe the scene and commit as much detail of it as she can to memory. Then she squeezes her way down to the street to look for more clues.

Responding to P'Aye in perfect Kyonin Elvish

:

"Let there be many more springs, maiden fair. But if you do remember me from a spring past then let us speak of it openly with one another. I call myself LodeStar, for I seek to find a bearing and refuse to be counted among the lost."

And to Gargos: "I am Uldhazel, lately apprenticed to Thespis. We will go down and look. But I am a little perplexed about what happened here. I can see that something has been conjured in this room recently. How mysterious. Let us go down together and investigate at ground level."

She looks at the spike with an expression of concern and skepticism before heading back down to the ground below the window.

Uldhazel gingerly steps into the room when space presents itself. Careful not to make additional tracks on the bloodied floor, she begins to examine the scene of the crime.

She starts by looking at the window. Pulling out her lense she looks closely at the glass, frame and sill - looking for any clues.

"Is there an experienced tracker here who can follow the trail of the attacker outside? This victim was obviously searched. Let us see what was left behind. Perhaps we can learn something of the murderer by examining what he or she did not take."

Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

While examining the scene she directs an arcane command to her lense. Spellcrafters will see that she is trying to detect magic in the room as she investigates.

Cantrip:Detect Magic

Looking to the sky, scanning the rooftops, looking for movement on the streets.

Perception if required: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

The familiar sense of forboding had left Uldhazel ill at ease. She had risen early from her meditations just before dawn to observe the skies in the cold morning air as the fogs lifted and the morning light began to creep over the rooftops. She was beginning to stroll out toward good vantage point from which to observe the vault of heaven, when -as if confirming her suspicions - the scream penetrated the air.

Uldhazel makes for the source of the scream, but approaches while scouting the periphery with caution and stealth if she can.

OK. Uldhazel is ready to go. Please let me know if there is anything she needs. Please note that due to her amnesia I have left one of her language slots empty.....a language she can speak - even though she is not aware of it.

I have a some adjustments to make, however they shouldn't change the character in a such a way as to affect the game. I'll make them today.

I think the division of loot should depend on how group dynamics work out in role play. Hopefully the characters will find common cause enough to share loot in a way that is convenient for the players. They usually do.

We can keep track of loot on this thread.

Hi Everyone. It's an honour to be aboard.

I am working on the backstory for Uldhazel the Elven Diviner ....which is fraught with conundrums. Uldhazel has a kind of amnesia. Not sure how its supposed to work yet.

btw...I may have some trouble with access to internet this week (I am moving to a new house and am not sure how quickly the new internet connection will be set up. Of course I'll be busy moving too...groan! The moving day is Tuesday....I'll try to have the character ready before then.)

FYI - Generally I can post daily 1-3 times. I am at GMT -5, however I work shifts and have access at different times. I mostly post at night.

I was reading a little about Ustalav on the wiki...it sounds like a good, dark setting for an adventure. Looking forweard to it!

Here is Uldhazel the Elven Diviner - who has forgotten who she is.
The profile is still a work in progress.
I am still working to further the backsptory a little bit as well.
