Tomnus grew up in Yanmass, the son of a simple merchents that worked along the trade routes that crossed through the region. Tomnus's father started teaching him mathematics at a young age, figuring thath is son would follow in his footsteps. If Tomnus was to become a merchant he would need to know mathematics as part of the trade but Tomnus often felt that he had a greater calling in his life than to be a merchent and to sit in a room with dusty old books all day. He soon grew tired of the mathematics that came to him so easily. He started to hang round some friends that were into swordplay and he soon developed some skill at it.
Much to his fathers dismay, Tomnus decided to pursue this new found interest in swordsmanship and abandoned his study of mathematics. This drove a wedge between his father and him and he eventually was asked to leave his families home. Having no where else to go he decided to enroll in the university in Lapidstat and to further hone his skills with the sword.
While at the University Tomnus showed great skill with a sword but even greater skill with his mind. His ability to think clearly instead of blindly rushing into a fight caused many to take notice of him and he was soon taught the ways of a battle tactition. Part of this new training was to return to his previous roots in mathematics and further hone his talents with the subject. He found the application of the subject much more palatable and soon started studying engineering as well as swordsmanship.
This new education served him well as he was soon approached by Professor Lorimore. The professor had been looking for a bodyguard to join him in his explorations in a near by town. The professor didn't get into detail and simply asked for Tomnus to meet him once the school semester was gone and Tomnus happily agreed.
Unfortunatly fate had a different plan. Tomnus got word a week later that the profess had been found dead and that his presents was needed in Ravengro at the funeral. He didn't quite understand why he had been invited to the funeral but he didn't want to question the wisdom of the great professor or to further frusterate his family so he decided to leave right away.
Unknown to Tomnus he is the grandson of a legondary guard of Harrowstone. His grathfather tragically met the same fate as the rest of the guards the night that the prisoners decided to revolt and try to take control of the prison. Tomnus's father fled Ravengro shortly after his fathers death as the pain was to much for him to bear. He settled in Taldor figuring it was far enough from the old life for his past to come and haunt him. This former life was kept from Tomnus an d he has no idea who his grandfather truly was. As far as Tomnus knows his grandfather was a simple merchant just like the rest of his family.
His fathers fear of Tomnus finding a similar fate that Tomnus's grandfather found is what caused the rift between father and son and they haven't talked since Tomnus left for the University.
