Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Actually, I have an even better idea for a new character. A human who was raised on Bajor during the occupation. I'm thinking parents were smugglers, who got caught by the Cardassians, which left the character stranded as a child, to be taken in by the resistance cell his parents were smuggling things to. Learned medicine from the cell's doctor/healer, then went to the Academy after Starfleet setup DS9.

I can't dictate anymore tonight, but does this sound workable?

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Not that one either. This is a Constellation class: https://evilgenius180.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/ccv3_047.jpg

I do love the Excelsior class, it's in my top three, but when we were originally picking a class of ship for Bastion, we thought it was too big. It would've been on the front line, and many were still in service without being pulled from mothballs. :-)

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Almost that old, but it is a Constellation class ship, much like the Stargazer that Picard once commanded. :-) (They originally came out around the time of the late movies I believe, if remember my canon right. So not Miranda-old.)

As for my choice of Captain, I like the first option. Give some potential for interpersonal role-play. Number two is pretty interesting too. :-)

--

I've been playing around with character generation, and I'll try to have something tomorrow to run by you. Actually, before I do that I want to ask if the following idea is workable before I start presenting any completely new ideas.

I could steal an idea from Dax and play the next Dell host after an emergency. Perhaps a doctor from the station that transfers aboard to be the new CMO? I'd flesh it out so the personality was similar but different, and a unique background.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Yeah, recruiting another player sounds like a good idea. I'll start brainstorming a new character. :-)

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

I'm sorry I missed the end of that. I'm still sick (still not sure what, antibiotics seem to do nothing), but I'm getting a balance back to getting so I can dictate again at something closer to my old rate. I'm not there yet, but I'm working on it.

Unfortunately, even at my best I don't think I was stable enough to continue as captain. I was slowing things down whenever I caught even the slightest cold, and I really don't want that.

If the game continues, I'd be happy to either come up with a new character or just step down entirely. Whatever works best. :-)

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

alive but still sick. :(

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Copying to all my games.

I really hate this time of year. :-( I've caught yet another cold or flu or something, and even dictating this is extremely painful. Bot me as necessary, but I'll be a few days. I'm very, very sorry! I'll be back ASAP!

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell, rather than sitting in his chair, moves to one of the consoles, says to Jalla, "Lieutenant, help me override the communications quarantine so we can transmit this."

Control + Engineering 13, spending a momentum: 3d20 ⇒ (1, 8, 5) = 14

Wow, that's nice for a change!

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

"I understand," Dell says to the being inhabiting his doctor, "And it's our hope that, by testing small and then expanding, that we can avoid harming you either."

If the others are still in the shuttle, he taps his communicator — otherwise just turning to them — and says, "We should return to the ship and get to work."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

"Agreed." Dell turns back to the doctor, and says to the alien possessing her, "Would that be acceptable to you? Setting up a small trial run to make sure our idea is possible?"

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

my fault, voice iffy again, post around me and I will post ASAP

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Taking a step back, Dell taps his communicator, "Yes, at least I believe so. I'll need Commander th'Chiaqis and engineering to run the numbers to be sure it's possible, but I believe we can use holo-technology and the data core on the planet to re-create their world for them, and holographic bodies for them to inhabit."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Still here, but been sick.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell nods again, and says, "Then let us both hope that our technology can give you your world back, and help both of us to live in peace."

Dell wants to keep close to the doctor while she's under the influence of the Zachra, so it's cool with me if we focus on the others until were all back together. :-) Then we can discuss the rest in-character.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell nods, and says, "Our bodies require rest, during which our brains devote their energy to processing memories and other subconscious activities. Without that rest, we first lose the ability to think clearly, then go insane - often violently — and finally die. Your song — beautiful though it may be — keeps our brains from entering that subconscious state."

After the message from Gareb, he taps his calm badge to reply, "Very good, keep me up-to-date."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell smiles some, and says while the others explore the shuttle, "We can do that, if you have records of Zachra we can re-create it for you, but we will need our minds to be clear. As I said, your song interferes with our biology. It keeps us from resting, which leads to us making mistakes, and eventually to insanity and then death."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Sorry to see you go, Pegira, but I do hope you return eventually!

Speaking of returns, I'm back. :-) I'll be able to post in the afternoon, probably.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Just wanted to let everybody know that I will be a few days off. Three or four, probably. I've managed to overstress my vocal cords again and I need to let them recover. I'm very sorry, and I'll be back ASAP!

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin holds off — for a moment, anyway — on sedating the doctor, making the attempt at a peaceful solution. He has to at least try.

"Your people can, it seems, interact with technology as well as biology. It may take our scientists some time to come up with a more long-term solution, as we are in the midst of a war, but in the shorter term we do have the ability to create not only holographic bodies for you to inhabit, but virtual worlds for you to explore while we look for those solutions. We can do that if you leave the bodies of others — including ours — alone."

Presence + Command (17) + momentum: 3d20 ⇒ (13, 5, 20) = 38

15 momentum. What is it with me and complications lately?

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

At that moment, Dell feels like an idiot. Because he was so desperate for a peaceful mission after so many years of war, he had assumed the initial contact was telling the truth.

Still, he keeps his cool and gently starts to reach for the hypospray of sedative that the doctor was carrying, even as he continues to talk.

"We came here to help you, but not like that. We would be useless for you, in any case. Our biology is not compatible. Your neural patterns interfere with vital biological functions. If you take our bodies, you will be facing certain death. Free our minds, and let us try to help you in another way."

Presence + Command (17), trying to Defuse the Tension (extra D20), + momentum: 4d20 ⇒ (4, 20, 9, 11) = 44 Three successes, but yet another compilation!

it may not be physical violence, but that kind of body snatching seems to be a kind of violence

16 momentum

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin nods, and says, "Good idea, do it. But be careful."

He gently tries to help the doctor sit down, and says, "Am I speaking to the Zachra, or is this a recording being telepathically broadcasted?" Of course, if it's the latter he's not expecting an answer, but it's always best to be clear when the universal translator is struggling.

Once the doctor is sitting down, he reaches to try to gently take her medical tricorder. If she — or the Zachra — let him take it, he proceeds to do a scan on her.

Reason + Medicine (10), spending a momentum: 3d20 ⇒ (20, 17, 3) = 40

I think we've all been forgetting to keep track of momentum, does anybody know where we're at?

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Sorry, I've been distracted by holiday stuff. I'll do my best to get a post in tonight or tomorrow.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Merry Christmas, or whatever you may be celebrating!

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin glances back to say something to the doctor, only to notice that she's struggling. Quickly realizing what the issue is, he spins around and steps up to her, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"Don't be afraid. Focus on my voice. You are in control of your mind. Push the song out and lock the door."

Assist with Presence + Command 17 (with Team Dynamics focus): 1d20 ⇒ 20

and... I made things worse.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin stops and momentarily stares at the scene in front of them. Trying to think past the music in his head. "It's almost like they were gathering to listen to the shuttlecraft, building this place around where it landed. Either that, or whoever piloted that chose a rather unique landing spot."

He indicates for Jalla to take the lead, and then follows.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

I'm jumping ahead a bit, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to post in the next couple of days, and this should've been in my last post anyway, I just had a very sore throat that day. (Usually if you see me do a one sentence post, that's the reason.)

After a moment of thought, Tobin gives the orders, "Commander, you and Cunningham continue to try to figure out the system, see if we can discover how to help these people preserve themselves without killing us, or even communicate directly — if possible — so we can get their help with stopping the infections."

Then, to Jalla and the doctor, he says, "We can check out that Federation power signature. It may be the Orions using some of our tech, or it might tie back to the original spread of the infection."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell looks up with a frown, and says, "Not that I'm aware of. Unless Doctor Jenner sent the runabout here."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

"There's… I don't even know the word for how much data could be stored here. This is amazing. The whole planet is one big databank."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell looks around as they materialize, just letting himself be impressed for a moment. Then, he turns to business, and says, "Let's see if we can figure these systems out."

He moves to another of the consoles, examining it as well.

Reason + Engineering (11): 2d20 ⇒ (8, 12) = 20

Sorry for the delay! I had throat issues most of the week and then ran out of time when I was trying to catch up yesterday.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell nods, "I agree. You're all with me. Standby crew to the bridge." Standing up, he says, "Let's see how we can help."

Despite the stakes, he seems downright cheerful. A mission like this is a welcome change from the war.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin considers that for a long moment, weighing the risks to the crew if they can't get permission or if they don't try. "Inform them, but also that we have no intention of approaching any other colonies or any ships except for the one that recently left this station, and that we are on a mission of mercy."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell returns to the bridge as well as the away team does, and he nods to Pegira as he takes his seat, and says, "Lieutenant zh'Qjaqir, see to that. Lieutenant Cunningham, as soon as that is away, set course for the planet Doctor Jenner discovered."

He looks back to Pegira and the other officers that were on the away team and explains, "The infection isn't a disease. It's the remains of a species that transcended biological form but is trying to hold on to its culture. We managed to make contact using the data that was flooding our comm system and some brilliant work by Commander th'Chiaqis. They had meant no harm. They only want to survive, and asked us to find that planet."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell nods and says, "We will. Thank you."

He steps back with Gareb, glancing at a console. "We might not need to. Doctor Jenner may have found something." He feeds the data to Gareb, and then hits the button to send a speech-to-text-to-speech reply, "Secure the station with quarantine procedures, then return to the ship. The key to saving everybody on the station and on our ship is — I believe — on that planet. I'll explain once you're on board. Dell out."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin glances to Gareb, and steps forward, "Your music is killing us, it interferes with our biology, how can we help preserve or restore your culture without losing ourselves?"

I'm not sure Tobin would get that message, since communication channels have been shut down?

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin continues to assist Gareb as much as he can, mostly silent as he focuses part of his attention on keeping himself from whistling the tune.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9
Gareb th'Chiaqis wrote:
"An Orion ship of dubious morals getting their hands on advanced technology? That doesn't sound like a recipe for a happy ending."

Tobin nods in agreement, and says, "Agreed." Then, he asks, "Doctor T'Vril's work is on making holograms to interact with people who have died. Maybe her algorithms would help the computers be able to make better sense of all this?"

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin watches the hologram and gives a slow nod to Gareb's suggestion. "Well, we know the Orions appeared to think we were trying to stop them from going to a specific planet before us. Perhaps they recovered and translated the message? My only other thought is Bolian, but the physical similarities don't necessarily mean their species have anything else in common. Nor do we have any means of finding one of their ships and safely asking for assistance in any case."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Reason + Science (12) assisting: 1d20 ⇒ 9 One extra success.

Tobin assists, taking advantage of his own science background to help with the secondary tasks so Gareb can focus entirely on the more difficult work.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9
Gareb th'Chiaqis wrote:
"But it's still not solid yet. You are the Captain, we'll get information but the call will be yours to make however I think it's only fair to let you start considering the matter now... this is the kind of decision that can be testing."

Tobin listens to this explanation with a surprised look, but it turns into a thoughtful one. "Thank you." After another moment of thought, he says, "If you're right, we have to try. Not only for humanitarian reasons, but they might be able to help us. Do you think you can translate the data through the holodeck systems? And, if you're right, create a holographic form for them that we can communicate with?"

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Before I answer Gareb: did we ever get the holodecks working, or do we have any other holo-emitters on the ship?

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

I'm probably not going to be able to post again for two or three days. I have a bit of a cold and it's adding just enough stress to my voice that posting is getting painful. A couple of days rest should help a lot.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell nods, immediately, "Granted."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Dell closes his eyes for a moment, as if fighting a headache. In actuality, he's fighting to suppress the tune in his head to properly concentrate on sorting out the priorities. Stop the ship, or try to control the situation on the station first?

Opening his eyes again, he says, "No. We need to quarantine the station first or stopping that ship will be pointless, and our best hope for a cure is here. Send a message to the Orion government warning them about the likely infection on the ship."

Looking to Gareb, he says, "Keep trying to sort out that data. Figure out where it came from. That's probably where the Orion's are going, and we will need to deal with that once the station is safe."

Then, he looks to Hagen. "Proceed. Take a security team with you. If Doctor Jenner and her team are compromised by lack of sleep, top priority is getting to the holo lab. Our best hope for a cure is the one who cured it before."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin smiles at the little as the buffer clears. "Send a written message to the Orion ship, warning them of the contagion and asking they return so we can cure them as soon as it's ready." He pauses, and says, "Hopefully they'll listen."

Glancing to Gareb, he then looks back to Jalla and says, "Follow it up with a priority one message to Doctor Jenner to describe the situation and attach all of our data. I think it might be best not to risk even a short audio message. Let me know when she responds."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

"Plot the intercept, but stayed docked for now. We haven't even been able to warn the station yet."

He looks to Gareb, then, and says, "Do it."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin looks up as Eliza comes in, and says, "I'm sorry to see that you're infected, Lieutenant, but I'm glad for the extra hand. The Orion ship and a runabout left the station a little while ago. Check sensors, and if they are still in range try to plot out where they are going."

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin stands beside Jalla, watching as she works and giving small suggestions to try to assist, focusing on the engineering side of things. "Maybe if you reroute the data system through the bridge display..."

Assisting with Presence + Engineering (14): 1d20 ⇒ 4 One success

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

I seem to remember there being an episode where at least one of the characters couldn't sleep, but I can't remember how long they lasted before having problems. I can't even remember what character(s) or even if it was TNG or DS9, or Voyager or even Enterprise or TOS.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

Tobin looks up at that answer, frowning as he tries to draw out the memories of what would trigger that message. He considers for a moment before standing up and practically runs the short distance to the bridge.

As he arrives and moves over to Jalla, his face is extremely serious, "Check the communications buffer, now. Are we transmitting something?"

Maybe 24 without, and 36 with stimulants, for the regular crew, before their ability to function gets affected? I'd agree that the security teams should have better training.

Rank: Captain. Determination 1, Stress 0/9

"I'll be in my ready room. Let me know if you discover anything, or need to my authorization for anything required for curing this."

Once in his ready room, unaware that the doctor had just sent a message herself, sits at his desk and taps his terminal, "Computer, access to remaining channel and contact Doctor Jenner." He has no doubt that Jalla has cut all but his one requested channel to the station by this point.
