Edit to add: If both the male and female options do play similar or the same, what's wrong with that? That should be something to celebrate, that the women kick exactly as much butt as the men. If it was "male avatar = fight your way through, female avatar = talk/seduce your way through, that would be offensive. Why would you want significantly different gameplay with a female avatar?

I don't want it...? I think it's good that we can pick in many games where it suits. It really sucked back when I first started playing games and my avatar would be a boy but named a girl name...

But there are also many cases (especially in story driven games) where the protagonist is not customisable for whatever reason... and very few of those have a female lead.

I'd love to see a FPS with a female lead. That'd throw things for a loop!

Perfect dark. One of my favorite n64 games.

The Luge, this conversation isn't about Paizo in particular. Paizo is INCREDIBLY progressive on this subject in comparison to the rest of the hobby industry (and related industries such as comic books and video games).

Be that as it may, yes.. I am for variety. Aliens wouldn't have interested it me like it had if ripely had been just another cut and paste big chested supermodel who giggled her way to the lava pit.

Freddy Mercury and Rob Halford are interesting to me because of their great singing voices and their lifestyle.

The wizard of oz would have come off to me as a comedy instead of some type of fantasy adventure if the main character had been an ugly fat old woman instead of a cute brunette.

Every detail adds flavor.

Flavor is good.

Just remember that adding flavor and taking other favors out isn't adding flavor..

So the sexy women stay. The serious hard nosed female veterans can come too! ;)

I ask what do you want from all of this?

Nothing.

Nothing is individually wrong with sexy women (or sexy men!) or with the enjoyment thereof. I quite enjoy sexy women (and men, although to a lesser extent). I totally empathise with the heterosexual male enjoyment of cheesecake and whatnot.

What IS wrong is the lack of diversity. The fact that it's incredibly difficult to find examples of women that are NOT sexualised and made into objects of desire, or are actually given agency equivalent to their male counterparts. This is a very bad thing.

What I want is more examples of awesome female protagonists. Of women that aren't sexualised. Of games where the traditional tropes are turned on their heads.

This isn't a zero sum game, least of all for the video gaming market. The current representations of men and women can be maintained WHILE ALSO providing for alternatives. If the market continues to favour sexy submissive objectification of women, that's unfortunate (in my eyes), but I'll at least have alternative options to look at.

But as it stands, there is little to no choice.

"Incredibly difficult"

I googled Paizo females. The page had numerous examples of women who looked like they could kick ass, and were not showing cleavage.

In my opinion, Paizo is all about diversity but if you start to turn the dial up on the oven it will burn the food and that's no good either.

Women are sexy.

Sorry.

It's a fact.

This scenario presented itself in a friend's game.

GM: *rolls social dice pool and wins challenge against PC*. I win. Now your character has to have sex with *insert NPC here*
Player: what!?!? My character would never do that.
GM: those are the rules. If I win a roll, you comply.
Player: I'll go ahead and roll with this, but I'm letting you know I'm very uncomfortable with being told what to do like that.

Now, I know this is a game I don't attend, but I was invited. All I could think after this player told me this was how violated I would feel if I had taken up the invite and that had happened to me.

Am i being too sensitive?

YES.

Homosexuality? I don't care. A lot of my npcs are gay.i just don't see what it has to do with progress though. To me, progress is technology and medicine. I don't see how a covered up androgynous woman who fears her own sexuality and two naked men making out on the cover of an RPG book is progress. I say let the imaginary people in the imaginary be gay and roll your dice. Who cares? I have more important matters to attend to.

Talking about a problem without coming up with a solution of at least trying to is a waste of time and it is whining.

The home brewers are trying to assist. What do you want? You want Paizo to do a recall and a reprint?

Ok, I am honestly not getting this. What is the end result? For all female characters to be big buff tuff ruff and tumble characters like bane or the thing? One of my favorite female characters is Ripley from aliens. She isn't an idealized female beauty but I still find her sexually attractive.. Is that wrong of me to have a sexuality as a man?

In one of the fall out games there is a female brotherhood of steel character dressed in monk robes.. Is this the end result of all of this white knighting?

A little story before I close.

I once made reference to my friend and described him as a black man. The person I was talking to got offended and told me to call him African American.

I asked him what was wrong with being black.

So

What is wrong with being a sexy woman?

A lot of women love looking and feeling sexy. From a young age with their Barbie dolls or in high school with their five hundred plus iphone self shots of different revealing outfits on their Facebook pages to the thousands of dollars of cosmetics and cosmetic surgeries they get when they are older.

I ask what is wrong with these women?

I ask what is wrong with the men who enjoy them?

I ask what do you want from all of this?

Interesting. Perhaps it would be fun to attempt.

What if, instead of single characters, the players played a regimen of soldiers? The classes could be pikemen, or mounted soldiers, or even longbow guys.. Groups of gunslingers perhaps? Thoughts?

Male Human Artist/Bard

The alien screams in a mix of loud and quiet volumes "500 Dollars and I WANT THE SAMPle that I LEFT ON A table in ROOM 5A of the FOREST lab of VENUS!" He explains you have to use his ship and it stays on auto pilot due to a code and wont divert far off course from the Venus forest complex in case you are space pirates who want to steal his cruiser. "THE SAMPLE IS WORTH NOTHING!" the alien adds. He shoots up some sort of drug from a syringe and pauses as the substance courses through his system.

Male Human Artist/Bard

The bartender turns, he is a large cat like creature who quickly gives flash a red bottle and opens it before he can get his money out. The soft chocolate scent wafting up to Flash's nose. "That will be five monies pal!" the bartender says in a somewhat feminine voice.

Male Human Artist/Bard

You walk up to the alien. The alien is standing on a bar stool on one leg. Its leathery like skin crinkles with its every movement. When you approach, he looks to you and Flash and says, "Its a SIMPLE job people..all I want is for you to go to the forest lab on venus and retrieve a sample from the 5A room. Are you ship owners?"

Male Human Artist/Bard

The ship docks with the station, it's door opening to a strange station full of alien life. Music fills the halls from a space tavern on one side of the massive station. There many shouts for labor are heard amidst the jovial chatter of the tavern goers. An alien catches your attention.. "I need ANYONE to do a SIMPLE job for me.. Pays good!" The bartender looks over the crowd.

Male Human Artist/Bard

The team makes it to the space station, but you can only take one of us. Which one Honeycat?

Male Human Artist/Bard

The small pinto starts with some effort. It's sputtering and hiccuping engine struggling up hills as it made its way toward the space station. The gate was open and left unattended but signs saying no trespassing were up. The fence had no barbed wire. What do you wish to do?

Male Human Artist/Bard

Gets in the trunk of the car.

A cold fall wind blows the field of wheat in front of you, the swooshing sound of the grass filling your ears interrupted by the blasting of rockets from the Tennessee air and space platform in Knoxville. You are tired of being stuck on earth. Lots of great adventure happen in space.

Zombie construct necromancer lich troll with a CR of 40.

With a little touch of shape changer, aberration, shadow, and ooze.

Acidic blood that the troll uses as a weapon (one of its methods of attack)it self harms and slings acid at the adventurers.

This should be fun, have fun with it if you want.

I think this would be an excellent end boss.

1.The beginner box single player game converted to multiplayer.
2.Black Fangs first encounter.
3.Deeper into black fangs dungeon with the extra content (dangerous mine)
4.Birdcruncher Goblins
5.Zombies of Whisperwood moor.
6.Night thieves of the Sandpoint theater.
7.Brain fiends under the old lighthouse (some may remember my dark humor dungeon)
8.Spiders driven out of forest by a giant centipede.
9.Pig Tongue the ogre.
10.Giant awakened steampunk acid shooting rat (An idea I had on the forums long ago.)
11.Ruins of Ravens Watch (Black fang encounter 2)
12.Page 24 encounters 1-12

After this Im thinking that Sandpoint shouldnt have that many more problems around it and I should move on to a sea campaign.

If anyone wants to give me any ideas for any of these encounters that would be cool.

The allure of the Dwemer is that they are mysterious.

Other than that, they are just steampunk dwarves in cool brass colored armor.

Why do you need help? Seems to be ok from what I see. Esp the telepathic ability. I dig that.

My own RP system/rules

When playing a completely home brewed game with my girl and her sister. I was playing a Human bard/fighter as a DM. I didnt do much but try to heal or do some damage to enemies here and there as I was the DM and I didnt want to be the typical DM-PC IM THE BEST PLAYER EVAR character so I hung back. Eventually while fighting zombie/skeleton things on the dead planet. I am currently the only player to die in my own campaign, with my own setting and own rules. LOL

We have had several close calls however.

I just got the beginners box and noticed a piece of the artwork within portrayed a few characters on a stage fighting some kind of monster. Kind of cool as it is similar to my forced play idea. I think I will change it as it does not sound too fun to be forced to act in a play, but perhaps I could have the pc's solve a mystery within a play.

Lincoln Hills wrote:
Just make sure you're crystal-clear on one distinction - that the NPC (the brain in the jar} is the one trying to railroad the characters, not you-the-GM. Also, if you plan to submit an adventure with a riddle or trap (and this scene seems like a little or both), you'll want to address how to handle the situation if the PCs simply won't play along (running away, setting fire to the stage, etc.) in a manner that won't seem heavy-handed. (Also be ready for the unexpected. The party bard may ask the brain-in-a-jar to review a play script that he (the bard) wrote, and sidetrack the brain from Evil Director Mode into Evil Critic Mode...)

What I expect the players to do, is to figure out that doing as the brain tells them will kill them. (Drink poison) So at this point I would hope that they chuck a rock at the jar or whatnot.

I want them to disobey the brain. I see your point. They may just ignore the play anyways which will cause the brain to use mannequins to attack, stage lights to fall, and failing that, starting actual psionic combat against the adventurers. I am fascinated with the Role playing as you role play concept. The characters playing in a play would be such a strange experience. Especially if the lead female role was a half orc barbarian. ha ha. The brain (upon entrance) tells them that the only way to get out is to play in a final act of a play (actually about 2-5 minutes of real game time) and eventually he lowers a bunch of goblets on a platter and tries to bluff that its "not real poison" and etc.

This is where I expect the players to be like..Uh......No! *Rolls initiative*

If they actually quaff the poison..Bad news.

Players almost never do as expected. I'm really wanting to see what a group does in this scenario.

Cool idea.

No idea what all them squigglies mean but cool idea.

I think I get the idea but I like it as a PC..

Basically Mcgiver right?

The ability to craft a bazooka out of a paperclip and a rubber band?

Thisismynextcharacter.

A few ideas. (give me a break, lol I just woke up not too long ago)

53.The pc's find themselves in a land full of zombies. The only towns are heavily barricaded and far apart.

The pc's get jobs as delivery/porters for valuable supplies and medicine and must survive to get to the other town uninfected.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
54.A giant fish is terrorizing sea-goers. The players must (With the aid of a breathing device) go under the water to fight it.

Finding out, that its not a fish at all..but a device.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
55.A mad dwarf is chopping down trees and felling them on houses and important businesses.

Nature-terrorist Fargellen Dopeltorp and his band of hippie-love-terrorists bent on returning the world to nature. Thick/Heavy Scottish accent a plus.

The pc's are hired to bring him in to justice from his trap filled forest lair.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
56.Elves attack. Pissed about something.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
57.Everyone starts getting all hairy. Noone knows why.

I added a second level. When past the brain fiend room, the pcs go down a ladder. (This is where the mannequins come in) They appear as two mannequin spectators in the back of the theater. A voice is put into the pc's minds and basically they are forced to do a Romeo-Juliette style play. Every time they dont do as the voice tells them, the lights go out and turn back on, the mannequins in the crowd one seat closer. (If they get up on stage, they stab a pc to death/serious injury. The players quickly find out that they are on the last scene and are about to be forced to kill themselves via poison lowered to the stage. A perception check shows that the voice is coming from a LARGE psionic-brain in a jar up on the balcony. The "master" brain.

Is this a good idea? I dont want it to be EXACTLY Romeo and Juliette but I want it to lead to the idea that its not a great idea to drink the potion.

I have toyed with the idea that the players enter seeing it as a stage, then the scene fades into a psionic dream state with npc actors that arent there. They know its a dream and go along with the idea on the false premise that if they complete the play, (playing how they think the scene should go) that they get to leave.
(If they kill juliette in the first scene the scene flashes back to reality and the brain in a jar throws a fit. Then resets the scene after he demands they do it over.)

Good idea for this dungeon? Interesting boss?

Also, Im thinking about submitting this to Paizo as an adventure module. Giving you guys credit too. Sort of like a community project.

Is it interesting/good enough? Is it Paizo material? What aspects would I have to remove? (Obviously the rapist will be removed or replaced by a bandit of some sort)

In another thread I saw talk about the 'Forgotten Realms Syndrome' where a setting is layered with high level people and the PC's feel overshadowed by them and occasionally get Deus Ex Machina'd by them.

I have to ask those of you have encountered this phenomenon (particularly those of you who have DMed it.)

Why? What was it like, what were the circumstances around it?

I ask because, as a DM myself I have a tendency to have 3E worlds with lots of high level people. Dozens of level twenties and it scales up from there as levels go down. None of these people interfere with the party unless the party seeks them out and meddle in their business.

These 'legendary figures' as you might call them are far too busy living their own lives, dealing with their own threats (many of whom are each-other) and staring down the face of divinity trying to figure out how to break into the next level and rise above their current power.

What is DEUS EX MACHINAD anyway? Isnt it a video game? What does this term mean?

What spells should I have if I picked phantasmal force?

Can someone make me a

Elf Rogue
Human Wizard

that way I can actually see what they are supposed to look like (The character stats)

If anyone could add in what I need to do to advance them in levels that would be helpful too.

You may want to refer to the old movie Labyrinth: it's full of Muppets and David Bowie, but underneath that are a number of ideas that can be mined by a GM who wants a creepy and disorienting (but not immediately fatal) dungeon. I also suggest putting on a Danny Elfman musical score (it really doesn't matter which movie, although Beetlejuice is my personal fave) to listen to while you design. Also, chutes. Dungeons still have pits, but for some reason one-way chutes are out of style. (Don't forget to have the chute open out into what was once the Pit of a Thousand Spikes and is now the Pit of One Big Fat Rust Monster.)

Also, if you can find them, look through S2: White Plume Mountain from 1st ed AD&D, and the Grimtooth's Traps series (there's a hardcover out that would be 3.5/PF compatible) - for the latter, you'll want two- to three-skull traps to dominate.

Ooooh Dominate. I hadnt thought of that one. Most def gonna use it. I will check that movie out too.

What about a chute that opens to nothing (Winchester Mansion style) so the players fall about 1 foot and spend 20 minutes trying to find some secret key or something thats not there? The dungeon is designed to frustrate among other things. I think that would do the trick. :p

The players will be there on a rescue mission for the daughter of the mayor of the town.

(Dont split the party)
When the players enter the dungeon and open the first trapped door, they will be presented with a slide. When they get on it, they slide down a hall and have a 50-50 shot of going left or right. Left leads to a big room with a small amount of fall damage. The room is filled with a _______ (I dont know yet) monster of some type. If they go right they take the small amount of fall damage but end up in a type of steam punkish BAR for Robots that someone had built. They have a chance of getting into a bar fight with an inanimate object and receiving small damage.

Left
After dealing with the monster, the survivors go through rooms some of which are trapped. This area has the only save vs death trap. I will provide a few chances to save vs death however. If they go the correct way they meet an ancient man sitting in his throne. Im going to pass him off as a super-intelligent being and attempt to waste the time of the adventurers with redundant go get me this and that missions before they realize he is a complete moron that has the key to the next area and simply needs to be killed.

Right
(Rape is an illegal activity, but it is in this context a fictional circumstance in a fantasy setting done by fantasy objects. Please delete this if it violates the rules of conduct here on the forums.I do not condone or advocate rape or any other illegal activity.)

After going pretty much the only way out of the robotic bar they are confronted by a robotic rapist. Yes. Raped. Violently. By a robot.Male or female. Does not matter. Providing they fail diplomacy checks and cant fight it off. After the robot has been dealt with, they enter a maze with a gnome skeleton guarding it with a club. Think about it. In fantasy, why is it just human skellies guarding junk?

When I say "mindflayers" I mean the little brain things that control corpses. I forgot their names.

Left and Right eventually meet up. They find a giant room thats being used by the local townspeople as an orgy room. Old people, young the mind flayers that are affecting them are the ones controlling the mess.

After whatever happens there happens, they find a prison where the mindflayers are keeping the person/s they are after. They escape for the reward.

How can I make this adventure more sick and twisted without becoming cliche and "Try hard"

What kind of traps could I use that would create various emotions listed above?

One idea I have is BACON. Thrown on the player by a gnome skeleton, and then after they are like (What the crap?) A bear attacks and gets +4 on his attack rolls. (I will throw actual candied bacon at the players) so they can munch on it.

Any ideas?

Clari, as long as you have the pics somewhere online use BBCode & the pic's address to post it:

{url= (URL here) } Title of link {/url}

Replace '{}' with '[]' and paste in the link and you are all set.

Like This

Also when you are typing a new post, there is a spoiler button below the text box that will show you the various BBCode tags you can use to post with.

Luge, there is a small '+' symbol to the upper right of a person's post (right below the reply buttom). If you hit that, it will favorite it.

As for reviews, you go to the product, go to the product reviews, and at the top there is a link called 'write a review', which will enable you to get to the review text box. Hope that helps.

This may not be the right place to post this. If not, sorry.

Im new to rpgs and I may need a little help creating a monster for a game Im going to create.

The idea may seem silly but here goes.

I need a rat.

A GIANT steampunk rat with guns and acid launching cannons on his back.

I need it to be for a first level group but I want it to be DIFFICULT to beat.

Its intelligent, can repair itself and can breathe underwater via its helment.

Its about the size of a volkswagen bus.

Other than that, its a normal rat. ;)

So if anyone wants to help me get the stats and attacks for this rat I would be greatful.

Hi, this is my first post. Please forgive me if I am posting in the wrong area. Im socially awkward when dealing the forum culture. :)

Also, I realize that Orc is spelled Orc and not Ork. Its just a thing I do. ;)

Im new to Pen and Paper RPGs and have only played DnD a few times.I am wanting to start a gaming group based around pathfinder because noone wants to play DnD because of their fear that its not cool or that it will make them look nerdy or whatever. I figure that asking someone if they want to play a "board game called Pathfinder" would give me better results.

"NO NEW TAXES" right?

Anyway, I was gonna wait on the "beginner box" because the kit really appeals to me. I like the maps and the smaller books and whatever, plus the dice.. I am addicted to buying dice. I almost cant pass new dice up. lol I hope to amass a large collection one day.

Instead, I purchased the

Core Rulebook
Game Bestiary
Adv Players Guide
City of Strangers

My questions

Did I purchase the right starter books?

Should I have opted for the Game Masters Guide instead of the Adv Players Guide?

What modules/settings should I get in order to provide the best experience for a beginning group (me included as I am new to GMing)

What books/tools will help my party the best?

Are there any online character creators/tools that will help me speed up the process?

I pretty much have no clue as to what Im doing. Any GM tips will be appreciated.
