Although I mostly DM/GM, back when I was in university I had the chance to play a few characters. I'm male and 26, for reference. + One young aristocratic human male, played as asexual because the campaign never really went into territory where gender preference would become an issue, and I didn't think of the character in that way. + One hulking male half-orc bard, who was most definitely heterosexual but never actually had any luck with the ladies. + Several female half-orcs of various classes - I liked half-orc as a race (something that is still reflected in my NPC choices today), and felt that playing a female character might be fun for a change. But I distinctly remember when creating the first of these characters having a discussion with a friend over what kind of class I would choose, and him launching into an incredibly vitriolic monologue after I turned down his suggestion of rogue as 'too stereotypical' (the monologue effectively communicating that female rogues are no more stereotypical than male rogues, and that he could list a called-out trope or unconscious stereotype for just about every class / race / gender combination, and that I should just damn well shut up about how I might portray the character and pick a class). That was an interesting day... As for attractiveness, none of the characters I've ever played have been particularly attractive. A lot of them end up having decent charisma, but I play that as them being verbose or charismatic rather than possessed of overly physical characteristics. I've never played a homosexual character, but I wouldn't be averse to it - I would just, as someone in the thread above alluded to, be afraid of offending people if an action I took whilst doing so crossed some kind of line, especially if it was unintended (It may also be worth pointing out that of our old group of roughly eight people, two were both male and homosexual, one female and bi and one female who only ever played huge rippling-muscled barbarians, and was completely straight. We were kind of an atypical group when compared to the stereotypes of the time...).
My favourite tabletop player ever, an old friend I sadly don't see so much of any more, was full of these. Mostly because he went for a sort of method-acing style of playing a character when it came to intelligence score, and... I'm not entirely sure whether he did it on purpose or not. Case in point, I (as DM) introduced the group to a beautiful moonlit village, heavy on the spoken purple prose as they looked to be there for a while. When I'd finished setting the scene, he decided to speak in character (a half-orc with a terrifyingly low intelligence score, back when I allowed min-maxing)... 'Well I don't know about you guys,'/b] he says with a completely straight face, [b]'but I want to find out more about that weird shining circle in the sky'. Bless him... he'd only been half-listening, and was genuinely talking about the moon without realizing it. The party spent a lot of time from that point onwards explaining to him, in character, what things like 'water', 'mountains' and 'weapons' were. Nice guy though - he took the ribbing with a smile...
Well, I played (and DMed) 3.5 for about seven years with roughly the same group, and had a lot of fun with rules (although towards the end we made liberal use of 'splatbooks', I've got to admit...), but as I'm currently GMing one campaign and planning another I probably simply wouldn't have the time to really get into the experience, which is a pity. However, I will keep watching this thread - the idea is an appealing one, and I suspect you'll find a good few takers. I guess what I'm saying is, good luck! I hope it goes well.
ScytheMaster wrote: What I do want though is a simple game, no fancy rules, about 4-5 players with traditional roles. I played a lot of 3.5 back when I was in college / at university, so I know what kind of thing you're going for, but it may help to clarify - when you say 'no fancy rules and traditional roles' do you mean that you would house-rule out some of the newer additions to the familiar old classes (such as sorcerer bloodlines), or simply that you want the players to create characters that more closely fit the traditional fantasy archetypes but don't mind what classes they use, as long as they capture that old D&D essence...? Just curious. (Also, I'm aware that for a lot of people here 3.5 D&D is hardly considered 'old school', but hey - we're a product of our age! I'm not too sorry I never had to play through the THAC0 years, I had a few players in my old group who did...)
Back in the good old days (when i was thinner and younger, in other words)and I only played Call of Cthulhu we just used to have everybody turn their phones off. Then I had a few years away from the hobby and when I came back... My group now keeps their character sheets on their phones or tablets, but they're still pretty good when it comes to not being too distracted. We did have one player who constantly checked something not-game related (I have no idea what it was) but he was thoroughly put off the idea when two of the other players ganged up and bombarded him with the text 'pay attention' every few minutes for the next hour. God bless free text messaging services, I didn't have to lift a finger.
I'm not just interested, I'm eager. I've both played and been the DM for a lot of tabletop campaigns, including pathfinder, but I recently changed countries so skype and play-by-post have suddenly become a lot more attractive. Potential problems? This would be my first play by post, although I'm eager to get into the swing of things. If that's not a problem I'd love to be considered, or at least get more information on the setting. If it is, I won't be offended - I'm sure there will be other games, but this one does sound like my kind of thing. My job is flexible enough that I could generally update several times a day if that was desired, and the idea of the occasional skype session sounds good too. I've wanted to play an alchemist in pathfinder for a while, and have a few character ideas rolled up. So if any of that sounds viable, please let me know and I'll happily post what I've got so far. |
