I love one on one games. I am currently participating in two of these type of games one GMing and one playing.

I would suggest to maybe reduce the number of monsters at any one time if you plan on having the two characters. However I do find that boss fights tend to be more epic than with a larger party.

I would also suggest allowing your player to run the Cleric in combat as well as his own character, if your player is up for it that is. This helps to bring the PC into the game a bit more when it isn't their turn. This works well in the games I play.

The most noticeable change from larger games is of course the fact that you have no other PC's to discuss ideas/strategies with. The best way to deal with this is probably what you have already mentioned and have a GMPC in the game. Playing via the forum will probably help alot as well. Perhaps having different alias's for major NPC's etc would help as well.

This is some of the things I can think off of the top of my head and hopefully they can be a little bit of help.

Vorka dodges Darts' initial attack, turning the blade aside with her thick bark like skin. She begins to smile but a torrent of flame gushes straight at her, she squeals in agony as the fire burns and crinkles her skin. Slicy quickly sees her chance to attack chopping down multiple times, eventually she manages to get one strike through with her sword slicing a small cut across Vorka's chest.

Her face burned and bleeding she squeals in rage when Korg attacks and uselessly punches at his back before she thumps to the ground knocking the wind out of her.

Nuggle's attack cuts deep into Vorka's chest, she coughs in pain but is still alive.

Longtounge watches on helplessly as his master is attacked, he sees Darts blow the fire and rage takes over the frog he moves over to Darts and bites with vicious teeth. They sink deep into the yellow goblins skin.

Vorka Round 2

Vorka then stands up and runs up the Gangplank in an attempt to escape.

I will say you all get two AOO's now.

Darts take 6 Damage.

You are goblins of the Licktoad tribe, who live deep in Brinestump Marsh, south of the hated man-town called Sandpoint. Once, other goblins tried to burn Sandpoint down, and they would have been legends if they had succeeded. But they didn’t bring enough fire, and got themselves killed as a result. Yesterday, your tribe discovered that one of your own had been using forbidden arts and was engaged in one of the greatest of taboos—writing things down. In fact, rumor holds that what he was writing was a history of your tribe! There’s no swifter way to bring about bad luck than stealing words out of your mind by writing them down, and so your tribe had no choice. You branded the goblin’s face with letters to punish him, which is why everyone calls him Scribbleface now, and then you ran him out of town, took all of his stuff, and burned down his hut.

That’s where things got interesting, because before you all burned down his hut, Chief Gutwad found a weird box within the building. Inside was a map and a lot of fireworks—fireworks that immediately came to use in burning the hut down. Then, this morning, Gutwad announced that tonight there would be a feast in order to drive out any lingering bad luck from Scribbleface’s poor decisions. But perhaps even more exciting, all of you have been secretly invited to meet at Chief Gutwad’s Moot House. Why would the chief want to speak to you? It can only mean that he’s got an important mission for you all... one that the other goblins of the tribe couldn’t pull off. This could be your chance to go down in Licktoad history!
