I believe Desmond was first referred to by the Deadmond moniker in one of Bold Strider's games, where we did the Echoes of the Everwar arc. Not sure he actually died, I'd have to look back through it - but it was close.

Wow! Yay! A moomin reference!

A grizzled half-elf raises an eyebrow, the cracks a smile at the mention of the Snork Maiden. "Ah, the snork maiden's no viper," he says, his tone just the slightest bit wistful. "Kind and sweet she is, with a flower behind her ear. It's many a day since I've thought of her."

So we can't really do anything to help Lucija, it seems. That's a bummer.

Just to be clear, those are the costs for helping Lucija and Harsk? If so, I'm down for it. I just want to be sure we're all ponying up to help everyone that was affected, which I believe is what you're proposing.

Terrill stands back, watching Lucija study the staff and the magical barrier. When she seems a bit puzzled by the situation, he turns to Faeranduil and raises an eyebrow. Studying the items himself a bit, Terrill then offers what limited insight he can to the wizard's assessment.

Terrill is unaffected by the flailing fury of the inverted giant, easily sidestepping the creature's blows. He responds a good deal more effectively, calling on Desna to put her divine force behind Terrill's bloody curving blade!

Lucija - rereading it, my tone in responding to you about the wall of fire was a lot snippier than I intended. Sorry about that.

DM - sure, thanks for the chance to revise. I hadn't realized that I posted out of turn before, I thought we were all up. For simplicity's sake, I'll just say that Terrill wasn't sure if the fireball finished off the ettin, so he swung his sword through the wall of fire and found no target, but used up his action. Now this round's post:

Terrill darts toward the large, prone monstrosity and attempts to carve off a chunk of its strange, twisted flesh!

Move action to get next to giant (likely provoking AoO), attack using Bane (5/15).

+1 Keen Curve Blade, Power Attack, Divine Favor, Bane: 1d20 + 14 - 2 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 14 - 2 + 4 + 2 = 25 vs prone AC

Status: 49/77 (based on revised action, would have kept up fast healing judgment, and not taken any fire damage)

The wall is opaque. I could have attacked through it with my sword, but with a 50% miss chance, same as if I used a ranged weapon. And only if I knew the right square to aim at. I'm much more prone to offense than defense, so I want to be on the outside of it, and I can only teleport to a spot I can see, so the opaque wall blocked what would normally be my alternative means of movement.

As the blazing wall appears before him, Terrill curses, "I can't see the damned ettin! And I can't see to get out of here! Lucija, would you get rid of this thing?!"

He then calls on Desna to protect him and steps through the fiery wall, unleashing another rapid series of attacks on the two-headed monstrosity as the flames lick at them both!

Boots of speed again (3/10), Bane again (4/15), swift action to switch Judgment from healing to fire resistance 8, 5-foot step through wall and full attack.

Fire damage: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (5, 4) + 8 = 17 = 9 points after fire resistance

Not confirming with that (and assuming an 18 misses), so it looks like 36 points of damage total.

I'd like to do this before we attack, if possible, though I'm expecting we'll be fighting very soon.

Terrill moves close enough to the ogres to hear them muttering and says to his companions, "That's odd," before explaining what he's heard. Read Giantish spoiler.

I'm quite pleased with the way that worked out. From a meta-standpoint, I'm guessing we're supposed to have killed these guys, which would please the ettin later on OR not fought them, which will make the ettin mad at us later on. But who knows, with giant-folk?

"Very well, we'll leave you to kill other enemies of Averaka, and be about our business," Terrill says, taking the directions provided by Shrakas.

As they leave the Winter Lodge behind, he says to Gunter, "Killing them for what they did to Hagal would have been sweet, but now your enemies are killing each other instead. Not as immediately satisfying, I know, but likely better for your people."

He studies the crude map a moment, then sets out for the ruins at last.

Ah, hell with it, it's the right thing to do:

"I've no interest in getting involved in your affairs," Terrill says curtly. "You tell me where the ruins are and we'll leave you to play with your ugly pet, but that's the best offer you're getting."

Ready to fight, but I don't want to jump the initiative. And maybe he's so skeered of me he'll just tell me...

I'm inclined to tell them we'll take their deal, and then just blow it off once we know where the ruins are (none of that lawful silliness here). I don't like the idea of doing favors for trolls or meddling in the affairs of giants, and a fight avoided is always a good thing.

So we have 2 in favor of the deal, 1 against, 1 abstaining. I'll give the others a little time to weigh in, unless I get impatient, or someone else does...

Gang - I don't really want to decide for us if we fight or negotiate. So, imagining that with a fierce glare, a timid shake of the head or a disinterested yawn we can convey our intentions to each other - which way do you want to take this?

It'll be a tough fight, but we're a tough bunch. And we're supposed to be helping the Averakans vs the giants, and they're a bunch of evil guys. But, we also supposed to be using the fighting as a distraction so we can get to the ruins.

I'd like to get the info on the ruins without making any deal at all, and was hoping that a 32 on my Intimidate check would have accomplished that - but that may be why he's talking to us at all.

Let's assume everyone can say things directly to the trolls from now on, to expedite posting, eh?

With a nod at Faeranduil, Terrill turns back to Shrakas, saying grimly, "You shouldn't have done that to Hagal. I didn't know him, but I hear he was a skilled scout. My friend here reminds me that we're also looking for some Thassilonian ruins in the area, any idea where they are? And while I'm tossing questions at you, maybe you could tell me a bit about Gorgnak, used to rule this place until one of his crew wanted to change that. Hey, that wouldn't be you, would it?"

Terrill discreetly lays a hand on the holy symbol on his chest, then mutters words in a dozen different languages before saying, "Tam, nyní můžeme hovořit k sobě navzájem. Co jsi řekl?"

Giant:
"There, now we may speak to each other. What did you say?"

When the giant repeats his previous words, Terrill pauses, uncertain for a moment how best to proceed. He's quiet for a moment, then opts for the simple, direct approach, "Usilujeme o Averakan zvěda , který tudy. Pokud ho máte, nebo vědět, kde je, raději mi to říct."

He then turns his head, speaking over his shoulder to his companions, to tell them what's going on, "His name is Shrakas. He wants to know our business here, and he's offered to eat Harsk. As tempting as that offer is, I'm trying to bully him into telling us if they've got the Averakan scout."

Glad you're back on your feet, DM!

Terrill whispers to Harsk, "You're quiet, and you know giants, why don't you take a peek and see what we've got in there? Maybe Faeranduil can soften them up, like we did the last bunch, but it'll help to know what they are and how many."

He waits to see whether the very independent-minded dwarf will follow his suggestion.

"You're right, Lucija," Terrill says quietly, "though I'm not accustomed to your people thinking so coldly and strategically. In any case, you're also right about the need for those two to keep quiet." He joins the party in moving as quietly as possible to the open doors for a peek inside.

And to you! I just fled the grocery store, having picked up our already-cooked turkey, and now I'm making pies. I'll spend the day tomorrow on the beach with 20+ friends, then come home and heat things up. Took me a while, but I finally figured out how to make the holiday less stressful...

"Well fought, everyone!" Terrill cries out, looking around and noting that they've defeated the giants without taking a single injury themselves. "I hope the giants haven't done too much damage to the dam. Does anyone know anything about structures like this?" he asks, directing the question mostly to Faeranduil.

Once a quick search of the outpost is completed, he says, "Right, let's keep moving."

Not sure if we've more orc-foes to fight or if we head to the ruins now. We were given a map by our Averakan friends, no?

Seeing the giant attempting to break open the dam, Terrill determines to do something about it. He blinks out of existence and reappears by the giant's side, his blade already slashing at the towering figure!

Swift action to activate Bane on sword, move action to use Dimensional Hop to get next to giant (25/100' used today), attack!

Terrill rolls his eyes as Xiaobo darts past him, then can't help but grin as his clever plan to fight the giants on the dam quite literally begins to fall apart. First my buddy runs past our position, then the giants decide they'd rather knock down the dam! Time for a change of plans!

He lays a hand on his chest briefly, calling on Desna to empower his blade, then runs with lightning speed across the length of the dam and arrives at the back of the Averakan horde!

Cast divine favor, then move to other end of dam.

I mixed up this game with another I'm in, where my character just had heroism cast on him before a fight. If it's all right, Terrill would have cast heroism on himself before the fight as well.

Once Faeranduil bestows magical speed on him, Terrill darts across the wide ledge to the end of the dam, hoping to block the giants' passage and fight them one by one.

Delay until haste is cast, then double move and activate judgments of Justice (+3 attack, +6 to confirm crits) and Protection (+3 AC, +6 vs crits). AC is now 33 (36 vs crits).

Xiaobo - you coming up to join me, and possibly flank with me? We've got an eidolon flanker as well.

By way of prep, Terrill will cast shield of faith for +2 to AC. He has an ioun stone for light, though he's not using it now, as it would be a bit of a giveaway of our approach.

"I think lighting them up is a fine start, Faeranduil" Terrill says quietly, his attention on the giants. "Though I will be most effective if I can get closer to them. Perhaps we can stop them at the end of the bridge and only fight one of them at a time?"

If we can stay close together and get haste on all of us after the fireball, that would be great.

"I'm ready to go, but can wait until dusk if that is the plan," Terrill says.

Terrill can cast stoneskin as well, so he can take care of his own. He can also cast tongues, if you want to save the cost of the scroll and scribing.

Terrill decides not to push further on the matter of the absent Venture-Captain, turning instead to the newly-arrived elf. "Dhiara, is it? I am Terrill. Though we do not share a faith, we share heritage and, apparently, a tendency to focus intently on the matter at hand."

DM - can you put a link to the Google Sheets page under your name or on the campaign tab? Makes it much quicker to get to than finding it in the discussion thread. Thanks.

Terrill still isn't certain whether there was something more to Kalla's inquiry about the absent Venture-Captain. He continues to speak with the war-chief, carefully studying her replies and manner as he does so.

Terrill was aiming to be intimidating when he was acting tough with Kalla, I just didn't roll for it because I didn't want to be misunderstood as starting trouble. Can I apply a roll to that interaction? If so, here it is:

Intimidate: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (12) + 18 = 30

I hope nobody minds me jumping in to do that, but Intimidate is what Terrill does best, though he could use Sense Motive on her as well. I don't have a lot to offer on the other councilors.

Terrill's face softens and a surprisingly warm smile crosses his face as he says, "If it helps any, Kalla, it was clear she regretted not being able to be here. As I'm sure you know, she's fond of this place and its people."

Listening to the rest of the plan, Terrill's smile fades and his face grows more intent. "Figured we wouldn't waltz into the middle of a growing war without getting tangled up in it some," he says. "So we're to fix your water supply, likely fighting off giants to do it, then we head for these ruins. And if we see your scout, bring him back, eh?"

Terrill flicks his eyes disinterestedly at the half-orc warrior, having been intimidated by much fiercer foes in the past. He says simply, "She said she had to get back south to Garund and the Gloomspires, didn't say why. Left the job to us. Is there some reason you needed her to be here?"

Yeah, it's a badger, right? Always thought that was a funny choice, though not wholly inconsistent with his grumpy self.
