I think it should be an 18 Attack with the Longsword and no second attack. TWF with a standard action is a single weapon attack, right? And you only suffer the TWF penalties when making a full attack using both.

Seeing things beginning, the old sailor rushes into help control the space. He prepares to defend himself as required.

Snickering quietly, Tawni allows the obvious warrior to take the lead by quite a margin, giving him a chance to be less obvious with Gerinel distracting anyone watching.

Tawni makes no comment about the portions of Zellara's story with Lamm that she has shared, or those that she hinted at but never said. Never fully understanding a Harrow reading, though he was familiar with the basics, of course, he also avoids commenting on either this reading, or the card he drew to represent himself. The negative connotations of that representation were not missed, however.

"Lamm is an eel, slick and slippery, refusing to be caught and held. Delay will only allow him to slip away yet again. We picked neither time nor place, but he will never give us the chance to set either. We have to move while there's a chance to catch him."

Tawni opens the door with the note still in his hand. Looking at Trinity, he moves aside even as he asks the obvious question, "Zellera?"

I think I also choose to assume we speak in Varisian until or unless someone changes that. I think this group is not going to use common for internal discussions!

"Ah, well, I'm Tawni. I'm guessing you received the same sort of invitation I did?" He holds the note, not the card, up. "There's a basked under the table that she says we should enjoy until she can return. Shall we?"

I'm good with it, as a rule.

One thing to note, since Yelena has been here longer at this point, she might not know we are in Korvosa until she sees us in the shop. Having run together before doesn't mean we instinctively found each other in the last couple of days.

And it helps keep us to the story's assumption that we are each alone to find the shop . . ..

I figured if it's the caravan Gerinel's part of, we might have been looking for Gaedren together before getting our Harrow cards, and that may factor into my opening post. Otherwise, we can just say we're in different caravans that both came to Korvosa for a meet-up or something.

I read the "I don't think we would have met" and half-dropped it. I was kinda waiting to see how the connection with Yelena panned out. It looked like the two of you established a connection, but she didn't seem interested in extending the offer, so I fully dropped it.

Not because I dislike the idea, but because I find it unlikely Tawni would have ignored a single woman only a few years his junior . . .. And without her choice of active involvement, it would have required at least some of that. <shrug> I'm not necessarily talking about romantic entanglements, mind you, but he wouldn't have ignored her.

You would think SOMEBODY would have seen them? SOMEBODY has to know where they hole up, how his cut of the take gets to him? How is it possible for so many people to know so little about an operation this old and successful? It doesn't take too many days of dead ends for the frustration to begin building.

Throwing his cloak at the bed, Tawni spots the card as the cloak knocks it to the floor. As he retrieves it, from his perspective it is both face up, and on its side, presenting neither directly nor inverted. A Harrow card? Looks like a giant juggling? The Juggler then, right? Something about the gods messing in our affairs or such. Wait, what's this written on the back?

Returning to the main room, still without his cloak, Tawni asks about any unexpected visitors. Hearing that no one knew of any, he orders a simple dinner, consuming it both to fuel himself and to eat some of the remaining time before sunset. Afterwards, he gathers his cloak, and what few other possessions he has, in case, before asking for directions to the top of Lancet Street. He does a pretty poor job of hiding his movements, if he had been trying to, as he has to ask multiple people clarifying directions before he can find the destination. Tawni draws up short once he sees the place, looking for any signs of trouble or ambush.

I was able to select it and drag it along, but then it vanished? Layers?

Edit: Hah! It was layers! I dropped him under Trinity! Snap to grid mucked with me, because I had him "in the vicinity", not in the square, so when he snapped to grid, and behind her, I lost sight of him unexepctedly.

Certainly appears to be a great many Varisians in the group, yes!

Ages will matter for knowing each other. Tawni, for instance, fled Lamm's tender mercies at least 15 years ago, maybe as many as 18.

More recently, he was part of a typical Varisian caravan, and "jumped ship" because he recognized the behavior of Lamm's Lambs, and couldn't stomach letting it continue.

And I have the Betrayed: Reformed Criminal trait, though the story could easily have been used for either.

Our Bard is also a Reformed Criminal with a Varisian sounding name.

Heh. And 3 of us have been hiding in caravans for some period . . .. Interesting, that.

Droppng to a 15 point buy. Hmmm. I'll probably also drop the archetype (or find another), as Inspired Blade wants 3 strong attributes.

Roll for gold or take average, whichever is better? Okay . . ..

Multiply by 10: 5d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 2, 6, 6) = 22

220GP is better than the 175GP average, so it looks like I can revisit the gear while I'm at it!


I think I have correctly made all of the updates.

A man returning to his roots, pulled to do so by a desire to save others from having experiences such as the one that ended his childhood. Despite his desire to never really return.


Found a character I had already worked up, that I like.

I have to make some adjustments. He's a 20 point build and not a 25 point build, and he's built using the Elephant in the Room Feat Tax adjustments. Both of those changes will prove pretty invasive mechanically, BUT!

The story and description shouldn't need to change at all.

I just need to update the mechanics.

I'll explicitly post again once I have completed that task.


With the reply that I should stick with Deft Maneuvers in trade for Weapon Finesse, I believe Tawni has been both downgraded and updated to match the recruitment standards.

He's older for a 1st level character, but he's traveled quite the road (sometimes literally) to get back to Korvosa today. I kept his age below middle-aged, so there are no games to play about his attributes and aging.

The write-up includes my current thoughts for his Feat advancement. Some of the order choices are HARD. <grin> Most likely early alteration is swapping Dodge and Combat Reflexes, since Opportune Parry and Riposte lives and dies by AoO count . . .. Gotta make choices and stick with them, though, right?

Swashbucklers are meant to be front-line fighters. Tawni's skills are mostly Face skills and Movement skills (plus Perform (dance) and Sleight of Hand).


Inspired Blade archetype also draws panache from Int.

Doesn't renew panache with anything except critical hits, however.


I have rebuilt and updated Tawni for submission.

I think I'll stick with the original Campaign Trait.

If he needs to become trap capable, I can switch the benefit of his Criminal Trait and move Skill Points into Disable Device. Probably from Swim. Lots of sailors couldn't swim . . ..

I can easily run with the original campaign trait, but am open to adapting, depending on what is added.

Think I have finished drafting the mechanical changes. New version of Tawni is an Inspired Blade Swashbuckler with Face and Movement skills. He can be converted to Face and Disable Device quickly enough, if desired, since the Criminal Trait used for the Intimidate bonus can provide Disable Device as a class skill instead. Looked up and it was much, much too late last night when I wrapped up that work.

Next is to work the story updates and characterization bjts. May go to bed early tonight, though, after only taking a nap before work today.

This is the character I had come up with for Curse of the Crimson Throne (Swashbuckler). Not the skill character you are looking for, not up to my current profile formatting, and certainly not up to Level 6, yet! So, there's some work to do to be a real applicant. Basically need to rebuild from scratch, though the attributes are already 20 PT build, so, that's a plus.

I could reconsider the build to support a Rogue implementation, but it seems several people are already working towards that slot, so, I'll hold off on that unless it is requested.

EDIT: I see that the posting appears to be a little slow, but VERY RP focused. More about interaction, the story, and the characters than dice chukin'. Makes me even more interested, though I am sadly out of practice and might have to "spin up," if you will.

I was curious, so I took the time to look. Nothing posted from any of his aliases since 2 Jan.

Running 2 tables of this game, and playing in 2 games, it appears, all went radio silent.

I'm hoping his life is going better than that suggests.

Grumble. I tried to post before my Scout meeting tonight. I'm very disappointed to see it NOT here.

Contest rules questions: 1) Since Tawni is a Finesse fighter, can Lunge be Dex based instead, or is my only attack option actually supposed to be that much worse than my normal attack? 2) Does the class Feature Deed "Opportune Parry and Riposte" apply and give me a really unfair advantage in this fight (as long as I have Panache available, anyway)?

Tawni moves into a clear space big enough for the dance. "I agree that people do horrible things, and that we have a responsibility to stop them. That's why we're here, actually, to get your help stopping people form doing more horrible things. I can't believe you can both own that responsibility and refuse to meet it without losing a fight in the same breath."

After speaking his piece, the young sailor draws his blade, salutes his opponent, and sees if he can't get a quick point off the drunken fool.

If I got REALLY LUCKY and that beat his attack roll (he would have missed anyway) I can riposte.

My new associates and I were just having a conversation with someone, and your name kept coming up. She asked us to find you. Somehow, I had a thought about where you might be relaxing. She said you should be able to help her with a couple of little problems. What was her name?" Tawni makes a show of trying to remember, but even a child could tell he's actually just milking the moment. "Mrs., no, Field Marshal, Croft." The Varisian drops the playful presentation and drops into a far more business-like tone. "She thinks you may represent one of the last chances to keep the Hellknights from siezing the streets. How? You can find the guards who are hiding and drag them back to their posts. Maybe stop the "guards" who are executing citizens by throwing them off rooftops. You know as well as I do that the Hellknights will shut this place down in the name of order. How can we help you get the streets back?"

Intelligence-based Diplomacy? Okay, my Intelligence modifier is a 0 compared to my Charisma modifier of 2, so the Diplomacy modifier goes from 7 to 5 for the check. Easily done.
