Stom grits through scream by yelling back at the demon. "Back to the Abyss with you!" Stom rears back and swings at the demon, but the screech from the demon causes a miss. Without much thought, he swings at the beast again.

Moving more quickly than expected given his dwarven frame, Stom wheels around to the other side of the vulture. "Pin it in!" Stom grips his axe and swings at the vultures legs in an attempt to knock it on its back.

Stom gazes back towards the open area and wonders how they might minimize the number of deaths - assuming they really are being mind-controlled. "Our best option might be to rush toward the pit in the middle. Samael deactivates the pillar. And, the rest of provide cover. We'll be stuck in the middle of camp with no way out, but we won't be killing everyone first."

Stom acknowledges Samael's scouting prowess. Well done, Samael. I would have woken most of the camp if I had tried that."

Stom considers the party's options around how to deal with the camp. "There's probably a way to silently take out an enemy, but it's likely to go loud at some point. I'm with Oppa. All options seem about the same to me." Stom shrugs and nods with head at his axe. "I think I'll let my axe do the talking, unless someone has a better idea."

Stom looks to Lyra, Samael, and Violant for their thoughts.

Stom listens to Samael's report of the encampment. At the end, he tries to make sense of the phrases that Samael repeats. "Sounds like Draconic, but hard to tell. Repeat it again, will ya?"

"Sounds like they are saying that kobolds abandoned the mine because they got greedy and didn't get the treatment they wanted. And, this Belmazog person did something to a dragon that the kobolds wouldn't like. In-fighting in the camp perhaps, if the kobolds are still around."

Are the grippli's still around? I kinda assumed they started heading to their village when we left camp. But, I don't know if that's a correct assumption.

"It'll be hard to sneak around with the mid-day sun beaming down. Let's find a place to hide for now and Samael can scout around when darkness comes."

"Aye, it'd be good to get a better idea of who is using this camp and for what purpose. Was that pit dug recently?" Stom points a hand towards the large open pit in front of them. "Tell me if you see stone down in there. I might be able to identify it."

Stom sheepishly stows his large axe and helps Lyra bandages any further injuries. He tells the Gripplis of how they toppled a different pillar not too far from here. "We pushed the damned thing over and burnt it. Now that this was one isn't confusing everyone, I say we do the same thing to this one. Soon enough, we'll have all of them burnt to cinders."

Assuming no one thinks wiser of this idea, Stom encourages some of the stronger Gripplis to help him push the pillar over and makes preparations for a fire.

Upon seeing the grippli's stop fighting and hearing Violant translate, Stom apologizes for hurting. "Yeah, uh, sorry about hitting you with my axe. I hope it wasn't too bad. Luckily, Lyra here is real good with bandages and such. She patched me up plenty!"

Stom is quite happy that his hunch proved to be correct. "Ha! Just like I said. These pillars are the cause of the Ekujae's problems. Looks like we might need to tear more down."

After dispatching the half-dragon, Stom finds wood for a pyre to burn the body, using that fire to consume the pillar as well. "Don't want this thing coming back."

He agrees with Lyra. "Let's rest here and tend to our wounds. Violant, you need to sit and rest. I believe that your blindness is only temporary. Let's just make camp a ways from here. I'd rather like to forget that pillar."

The next morning, Stom makes a suggestion as the group readies themselves for the day. "I assume that the blindness effect is caused by more of these pillars. If we travel the boundary that the Ekujae told us about, I think we'll find another pillar to topple."

Stom nods grimly at the group. "So be it." He puts a boot down on the half-dragon to hold them in place and draws his greatsword. "Your life is forfeit." he says with bitterness in his voice. He does his best to make the half-dragon's as quick a possible.

Stom yells back at the half-dragon. "In my sleeping visison, I've seen the destruction of villages. If that is what you, Balmazog, and Dahak wan to achieve, I won't stand for it. If I die trying to stop that, so be it. More will rise up against that dragon."

Stom nods in agreement with Oppa. "Lyra, what say you? I know Sarenrae teaches the notion of giving evil-doers chance at repentance. Has this follower of Dahak done enough to seal their fate? Violant, Samael, what say you?"

While Lyra and the others consider, Stom takes a few deep breathes and thinks on what the half-dragon said. 'Malmazog. Dahak's chosen. Sorrowmaker. Marrow of Dahak. What does this mean?'

The fire in Stom's eyes fades as Lyra and Samael deal with the threat of the pillar. But a fire burns in Stom's mind as the half-dragon charua-ka brings up Dahak. The visions of towns being burned come racing into his mind.

"Don't speak of that evil dragon." Stom spits on the ground in disgust. "Who is Balmazog? Where is she?"

This time, Stom does notice the eye beam from the pillar and calls out to the group. In his mind, the best way to deal with this to regroup and take the half-dragon creature with them. He grabs the half-dragon around the neck by his shirt or armor and starts the group's retreat.

"Away from the pillar! Into the trees!"

My read is that:
* you are off guard to all enemies
* you need to pass flat checks to target
* likely need to Seek w/ hearing to know where a target is

So, uh, not great???

Stom excitedly agrees with Lyra. "Ah, they look like they fit, too! Boots of Bounding! That reminds me of that time I jumped from that tree platform and sliced one of those half-orcs nearly in half with an attack as I landed! HA! Think of how far I can jump with these boots!"

As the excitement wears down, Stom asks Nketiah about what to expect in the jungle. "I've never been in a jungle before now. What preparations should we consider? Do you need special clothing? Or special bedrolls? Oh, do we need to sleep in the trees? Should we bring extra rations, or is hunting plentiful?"

I'm pretty sure Lyra is our only shield wielder and she currently has a Sturdy Shield which has better 'base' stats. Plus, Lyra has Emblazon Armament and Raise Symbol which are exactly the same benefits to saving throws as the Spellguard Shield. All that said, I think that one will go unclaimed.[/oooc

Stom walks beside Nketiah as she leads them away from the festivities and tells the party of the Ekujae tribe's dealings with the cultists.

"Aye, we'll track these cultists and deal with them. We're not exactly used to the jungle, but I think we'll adapt just fine." As he says the last part, he tugs slightly at his long bread, knowing that the heat will likely be almost unbearable.

"When do we start?"

Having no context on Nketiah's story and unsure if Oppa's interpretation is correct, Stom asks questions. "Who or what is the Darkness in your story? How long ago did your tribe fight against Darkness?"

Stom is the next to speak. His nervousness at speaking in front of a group this size is clear, perhaps even more so at speaking after Oppa.

He clears his throat and starts by telling the tale of working in his family's forge and how he started his adventuring life.

"I was born to a family of blacksmiths, and from an early age I learned the trade. I learned that red means hot, the burns on my hands a quick lesson or reminder." He goes on to describe in detail the process of forging a sword. "The temperature had to be just right, my father would say. And the right temperature would often change based on the specific weaponry being made, or whether we were at the start or the end, or how much humidity was in the air. He was a master craftsman and he wanted to see me become one as well. Unfortunately, that will never happen."

Stom sighs heavily as he speaks on some of the worst parts of his life. "As I neared adulthood, I began to have terrible nightmares of cities being destroyed, fiery blazes consuming whole neighborhoods, and the like. I didn't dare sleep - sleep was worse than exhaustion. After years of this, I finally decided to leave home, hoping that change would calm my nightmare. Or, at least my family wouldn't have to see me suffer."

"Almost immediately after Highhelm, the nightmares vanished. I was able to sleep, rest, and actually live. Instead of the forge, I learned how to survive on my own and keep dangers at bay. For awhile, a rage controlled me - anger from being forced out of my home. But, I learned to control it, harness it, tap into it when needed."

Alright, here's the deal. I got started on a fall to darkness style campaign as a pbp game and told some of my local gamers about it. They're now wanting me to run one for them and I'm trying to find a way to start it without having to right too much to start with, particularly with gencon coming up before we start. I had the idea that a module would be a good starting point and that I could then continue with them having fallen, or nearly fallen, for the rest of their diabolic lives.

So the pertinent info for my criteria:

1.) Level 4 or less starting (preferably 3 or 4)

2.) Set in an area where opportunities to easily continue the game exist afterwards (looking to make it more political and moralistically grey so areas of the world that encourage that are a plus).

3.) Party size is 4-6 (probably only 4)

I've looked through the list of modules but none stand out to me.


The Morphling just started this campaign and at least a few of us who did not get selected are interested in filling out a group and getting a gm for it and a couple of players to fill out the group.

Currently the party would be:
Jessica DuMorne cleric (ecclesitheurge) of Shelyn
Tal Darkariel wizard
Kiley Sherrow barbarian

The build rules and such wold be up to what ever gm we can find for it, but the three of us were built with a 20pt buy.
