While I appreciate the Humble Bundle offer, I'm getting a bit annoyed by the fact that I have not been able to download a single PDF since yesterday.

Same here.

As a backer, I received the PDF two days ago. I'm pumped, I can tell you. The Core Rulebook is 285 pages, filled with lots ... no, make that LOTS of stunning Elmore art. I have not had time to read everything closely, but my first impression is that it's indeed very high quality work (not just the art, but the rules, too). I'm very, very happy with the product I backed ($129 to get the printed books shipped to Europe ... and I can't wait for the printed books, because I think such art deserves being printed).
If you are interested in this world and / or in Larry's art, I think $12.95 is a bargain ... no, I don't work for Tony, I'm just happy that this project was finished in such a great way (despite quite a bit of problems - which Tony dealt with admirably).

Thanks for the answers. I can see why the goblins can be played as not presenting a REAL BIG danger ;)

Thanks tonyz. I guess I was also asking because I wanted to be sure I at least partially understood CR ... as I said: I'm new to the game.

Thanks for the answers. I didn't know about CRs not being additive so that would explain quite a bit. I did know about the assumption that a party is 4 or 5 players - that's why I based my calculations on 4 players and an APL of 1 ... of course, there IS a difference between 4 players fighting 5 goblins and 5 players fighting the same number ...

I hope that a group of 4 is enough, at least one player is a druid with an animal companion ... though thinking of it, the animal companion might not be usable in a large part of the adventure (it being a hawk).

Forgive me if the question is stupid or if I'm overlooking something, but I have only very recently started with Pathfinder and I'm preparing to run Burnt Offerings with a group.
We have 3-4 player characters at level 1 (starting out).
So their APL is "1".

One of the first encounters pits the party against 4 goblins and a warchanter (lvl1 gobin bard).
A single goblin has a CR of 1/3 (135 xp each) and the goblin "bard" should have a CR of 1/2 (200 xp) ... correct?
Adding that up, I get 640 xp worth ... which would make the encounter something like a CR 2.5. Adding the CRs (four 1/3 and one 1/2 gets - if I understood the rules for the progress of CRs correctly - also add up to a total CR of 2 or 2.5).

For a party with APL 1, a CR 2 encounter is challenging, a 2.5 even more so ... but ok, so far, so good (not good if we are down to 3 players, then I probably have to drop at least one goblin?)

Now ... the goblin commando (lvl 1 ranger), his dog and four more normal goblins: CR 1/2 + CR 1 + 4 CR 1/3 ... to me, that is a total CR of 3 or even 3.5 ... a hard to epic fight (summing up the xp that encounter earns also leaves the impression of an encounter between CR 3 and 4). Even more if we only have 3 players - would dropping two goblins be ok?

The adventures themselves list the warchanter and the commando with CR1 ... which would increase the total CR of the encounters further ...

Are those fights not a bit tough for the first fights of a group starting out on adventure?

Mind you, I lack experience, so I cannot say whether the Core Rules are a bit pessimistic or not ...

I'm sorry for thread necromancy, but this here seems to be a good place to add a - probably very stupid - question: But just to make sure: if a mage overcomes an enemy's spell resistance, the enemy still gets a saving throw, doesn't he?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Interesting discussion ... wish I'd found it earlier, it would have saved me some work.

I started playing again after 20+ years ... with my kids and Pathfinder as the ruleset. Of course, being rusty on the rules (when I quit, 3rd ed. D&D was just coming out) and working full-time, I did not have the time to come up with my own adventure.

Fate had it, that I got Runelords without much thinking about it / pre-reading (yes, my fault). So now I'm trying my best to reduce it to a kid-friendly level.

Some things I did:

spoiler:
I simply left out the event where the girl tries to seduce a player character. The townsmen who is killed and his face eaten away by a goblin - the players (my kids) arrive in time to pull him out of the wardrobe ... with the goblin, who has his teeth around the man's nose - so more of a comical effect, in line with the way goblins are presented).

I hope I can rewrite the rest, too ... but it's a bit more work than what I wanted it to be. Next time I read the messageboard before deciding on an adventure path.

Many thanks for the question and the answers. I bought Pathfinder two weeks ago as I want to start playing pen&paper with my kids (now that they're old enough) ... and the same question confused me. So ... no need to worry, it's badly worded in the rules?
You take your monk level as the attack bonus (plus strength bonus) and deduce 2 because you attack with both hands (legs ... whatever)?
The -2 is nowhere mentioned under "monk", though it says (lvl 1 monk): he is treates as if he was using the two weapon fighting talent ...
I read the rules about two weapon fighting: you normally have
-6 / -10 ... when using light weapons (which a monk does), you have
- 4 / - 8 ... and when you use two weapon fighting talent, you get
- 2 / - 2 ... so that would solve it, wouldn't it? As you apply your level to attack, a lvl 1 monk would have -1 / -1.

I'm afraid I will have more questions (all those rules are a bit daunting as I stopped playing pen&paper about 25 years ago).
