The problem with this Core PFS mode, as main our PFS monkey wrote on the JIRA ticket, is that characters can acquire chronicle sheets that allow them to take character options from outside the Core scope, which will require a wider list of sources to be loaded. However, if you load a source that has the chronicle item you need, this will bring in all the rest from that particular book and all its load prerequisites, which are still not allowed for the character. So, the problems with this PFS mode are more complex than it might originally seem. We are however working to see what can be done.
Hi, I'd be interested in hosting PACG events in Cologne, Germany. It's probably possible to do this in a shop – I have talked to Brave New World owner Robert about this, and he's OK with this – or possibly on a private basis. I have contacted Markus Lambertz as he is listed as PFS Venture-Captain for the Cologne region here via PM on this site, but seeing he has only posted once here, I'm not sure he really frequents the forum, so I have no idea if my PM will even reach him this way. Is this the right way to go, or can I get into this in some other way? Regards,
I'm currently implementing a new CR calculation system for PCGen that follows the rules for the Pathfinder RPG, and I've come across monster roles and key clsses. The Bestiary books specify the monster roles for their monsters, and Bestiary 1 has the key association for the core classes, but two questions remain: 1) Is there offcial word about the key class associatione for the newer base classes like alchemist, cavalier, inquisitor, oracle, summoner, witch, anti-paladin, magus, ninja, and samurai? 2) Is there a way to determine the monster roles for creatures form other publication, such as, for example, the Inner Sea Bestiary? Would Paizo staff be willing to provide this information? Regards
A data set for the Jade Regent Player's Guide is now included in the newest alpha release 5.17.9 of PCGen. You can download this version here.
I can create the data set this week, but please file a request on our JIRA system or, if you don't feel comfortable doing that yourself, please ask someone on our mailing list at pcgen@yahoogroups.com to do it. Thanks!
PCGen's data format isn't changing. What will be changing is the GUI, and also a lot of what's going on under the hood. We are working on more and more Pathfinder data sources, but as all of our members have day jobs, families and social lives, and we are in fact not that many people working on the data files, progress is slow. I'm currently working - slowly - on data sets for Ultimate Magic and Combat, for example, but those will take some time. New character option concepts like archetypes or alternate classes also make it necessary to make changes to our core data rule set, and you can be assured, that work is progressing. For anyone who is interested in the project (i.e. using PCGen, not working on it), I can recommend joining our mailing as pcgen@yahoogroups.com.
I'm not familiar with what Herolab can do besides create characters, as I can't even run the demo on my operating system, so I cannot say anything on that. PCGen however has a few GM support functions too, if you run it, check out the GMGen menu. I think it can network, too,. but I'M not familiar with these functions, too, as they do not appeal to me. I don't really want to use a computer at the table. I just use the program to maintain my players' characters and to prepare my NPCs and monsters.
Justin Franklin wrote: Not to mention they would have to hire people to write and maintain the code and data. That would be a constant expense so I don't see a Paizo Character Generator costing any or that much less then Hero Labs. Have you seen PCGen? It is an free open source multi-platform project that is run entirely by volunteers.
Michael DeMocko wrote: I've never really had a problem using this software, but for some reason I can't for the life of me figure out how to select a favored class. Can anyone enlighten me? I assume you are talking about the Pathfinder RPG game mode. So, to select a favored class, go to the "Feats & Abilities" tab and select the "Racial Abilities" subtab. If your character has at least one class level added you should see an entry "Favored Class (0/1)" (probably) in the right hand pane. Click it, and the left hand pane will fill with the available selections. After you have selected a favored class in this way, a new item will appear on the right, named "Favored Class Bonuses (0/x)", if the character has at least one level in the class you selected previously. If you click that, the left pane will fill with the available options (might be a big list if you have the APG active, otherwise just two). You can then select from that list until you have made all the selections available to you. Upcoming versions will not only tell you an the summary tab which of your character choices are still open on, but also where to find them. Hope that helps,
Cartigan, the default mode that a new installation of PCGen starts up in is 3.5 mode and thus only 3.5 sources show up in the source selection window. The Pathfinder RPG is a different beast than 3.5 and thus requires its own game mode. Switching the game mode is just a simple selection from the menu. If that proves to much for you, than I fear that most certainly this program - and by extension, probably any program that uses windows and menus - is too complex for you. As a developer on the PCGen program, I really like to help our users with their problems, but in your case I am willing to make an exception. If you don't like the program, that's fine, but I really see no need for you to be as abusive and offensive as you are. So my advice for you is, just don't use it. Go away. Regards,
Eric Clingenpeel wrote: You might want to let them know to fix their download button. Currently the button on the 5.16.4 RC1 page downloads the 5.16.3 version. I had to try a dozen different things before I was able to download the correct version. Actually there is only one page at Sourceforge, which has a big green button for the most current stable version. Newer, beta/RC versions are listed below that button on the same page. Sorry if it's not as intuitive as it could or should be.

Just scroll down a bit to section 2 "Alpha, Beta, and RC Releases". Please note that the APG set is still a Work In Progress, and bound to have errors we are working on fixing. So, if you find any, please report them. We don't currently have a forum, but you can participate in a Yahoo! group with a normal non-Yahoo! email, too.
PCGen also provides a dataset for the Ultimate Magic Playtest, Round 1. This dataset is an out-of-cycle dataset release designed to be compatible with PCGen version 5.16.3 and up. It can be installed from within PCGen, by using the "Install Data" menu entry from the Tools menu. It contains everything necessary to build a magus form level 1 to 20, including the spells from the Pathfinder RPG Advanced Player's Guide on the magus spell list. If you use this dataset in conjunction with the Advanced Player's Guide dataset, make sure to set the option "Allow newer sources to override duplicate objects from older sources" on the Sources page in the preferences dialog to avoid duplicated object warnings.
