Sprig delays and watches the others. When Terrel moves in on one side, she goes to the other in an attempt to divide the thing's attention.

Attack(Bastard Sword, Flank) v. Statue: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 2 = 20
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Sprig's relief at having made it through without any troubles is gone when the statue begins to move. She nods at Terrel's instructions and draws her bastard sword and shield. She wishes she'd had the foresight to bring a maul instead of another blade or her quarter staff, but it was too late to do anything about that. Hearing Rena's request, she circles around to the right of the statue and makes sure to leave a gap for the mage's spell.

Take care both of you! It's a crazy world at the moment.

Sprig nods and takes up her position in the front and follows the more skilled survivalists' lead.

Hearing Terrel's voice raised is actually enough to make Sprig jump a few feet into the air. A moment after she recovers from the scare she looks at him in shock.

S-sorry! I w-wasn't meaning we do it!

Female Human Fighter 1 | HP: 11/11 | AC: 20/16/14 (w/o Shield: 18/14/14) | F: +3 R: +6 W: -1 | Per: +3, Init: +4 | Arrows: 20

It's alright. Wait until one of us forgets we have a coil of rope only to realize it after some complex plan to get us over an obstacle. :D

"Right, left 'tis!"

"I guess we could flip a coin to see where we go," Sprig says. She shrugs her shoulders and peers down the tunnels.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

GM:

Not sure what I'd see with that roll, even with her suspiciously good nightvision. (Just a reminder that she has darkvision 60ft.)

Climb 2 (ACP): 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 7 - 1 = 20

I'm guessing that makes it?

Sprig continues her climb and rolls over onto the top of the cliff before turning back and looking down just in time to see Terrel and Warren be engulfed. She starts to fish out her rope, but Terrel's call gives her pause.

"I-illusions? You mean like those tricks Lizzy does?"

Yes, sorry, Sprig is climbing the wall.

Sprig wastes no time in putting her sword away and climbing.

Female Human Fighter 1 | HP: 11/11 | AC: 20/16/14 (w/o Shield: 18/14/14) | F: +3 R: +6 W: -1 | Per: +3, Init: +4 | Arrows: 20

Sprig scampers away from the painful pincers of the scorpion after wrenching free of them. The rasp of steel being drawn and the heft of the longsword in her hand gives her an anchor against the rising tide of her fear. Seeing Terrel score a devastating hit on the one that attacked he, she instead goes for the scorpion that had attached him.

"Okay, so they're bad news. I guess we fight," Sprig asks just before a spear of some magic stuff goes flying over her head.

"Yeah, we're fighting," she says before drawing her bow and letting fly.

Longbow vs. Closest of the nasties: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Unfortunately, the shot goes skipping off into the darkness.

Sprig follows along, trying her best to notice the things Sir Ardan points, but has to admit after a little while that she can't see the subtle signs he does. A few minutes later as they are walking down the tunnel, she speaks up.

"So, anyone know any good travelin' songs?"

Female Human Fighter 1 | HP: 11/11 | AC: 20/16/14 (w/o Shield: 18/14/14) | F: +3 R: +6 W: -1 | Per: +3, Init: +4 | Arrows: 20

"Thank ye," Sprig says as Rena starts to cast a spell to dry her clothes.

Just wanted to note that you can, RAW use Prestidigitation to dry off like you would using a towel since, to my knowledge, it doesn't replicate the effect of another spell.

Female Human Fighter 1 | HP: 11/11 | AC: 20/16/14 (w/o Shield: 18/14/14) | F: +3 R: +6 W: -1 | Per: +3, Init: +4 | Arrows: 20

"Huh? Oh, right. It's not all that chilly. I'm more wet than anythin'," Sprig says as she wrings out the tail of her now too large tunic. "Might be quicker t'magic me dry, eh?"

"I'll go. Just give me a bit t'get out o' th'armor," Sprig says before shucking off her gear and armor. Once she has the rope around her waist, she takes in a deep breath and dives in.

Sprig gives a chuckle as Catherine helps fish her out of the river.

"Congrats, looks like you won even with my headstart," she says as a grin spreads across her face. Seeing Ardan lining up for a jump, she motions for the others to clear some room and does so as well. He may be smaller than the heavy horses used by many, but the centaur is not what she'd call dainty.

Sprig sees Terrel readying to catch her and she shakes her head.

"I ain't as light on m'feet. Jus' 'old th'line taut," she says before waiting on him to either hold or tie off the line before making her way across.

Wow, lotta posts while I was at work.

Sprig's nose scrunches up as she catches a whiff of the smell that Rena had conjured. She quickly covers her nose with her cloak as her eyes water.

"Couldn't ye 'ave made it smell like cookies instead," she asks the wizard before looking back at the passageway Dart had taken. She finds it difficult to turn away, but reminding herself that the others were right about him being a grown man and that she has her own job to do finally lets her turn and take the lead, moving ahead several strides to better see what lay ahead and to hopefully see any threats before they notices the others.

Sprig's built to be a decent vanguard, so she'd ideally be out front. She's not so great as a scout with her low WIS score, but she wouldn't be the worst at it.

Sprig blushes as she learns some of her handiwork has preceded her.

"Yeah, not our finest moment," she says with a nervous giggle.

She keeps quiet as Ivan calls out the first group and Ardan volunteers them to be next. She has a brief moment of panic when Dart looks their way, not really knowing how to handle the flamboyant man. She is of half a mind to do as Amelia suggests and leave him to whatever fate he finds, but she can't ignore Daniel's plea nor his worry. She wonders what she would feel like if it had been her asking for help for Elizabeth and they turned her down.

"We 'ave to try don't we," she asks the others softly. "Ain't that why we're 'ere?"

"That would be somethin'," Sprig chuckles before finally placing Warren's face.

"Ye weren't the one nearly turned the tower into rubble were ye," she asks, remembering the day a little too clearly for her tastes. She'd never had her life flash before her eyes, and she hoped she wouldn't ever repeat the experience.

Kinda jumped the gun there. :D

Just asking, but is everyone, GM included, alright with romantic relationships between characters? I just wanted to ask before making anyone uncomfortable before it happens.

I can see Terrel and Sprig becoming close as they get to know each other more. She's going to almost die of embarrassment when he finds out about her tailing him to watch him paint. (I'm sure Elizabeth, if no one else, would happily spill the beans.)

As far as how well Sprig knows Catherine and Rena, I guess it'd be well enough to have tagged Catherine with a nickname. Maybe she got caught sneaking back in one night, maybe when she got roped into something by Elizabeth.

Female Human Fighter 1 | HP: 11/11 | AC: 20/16/14 (w/o Shield: 18/14/14) | F: +3 R: +6 W: -1 | Per: +3, Init: +4 | Arrows: 20

@Sir Terrel: Are you getting autocorrected or does Terrel just call her Spring instead of Sprig? Just asking because I think the second's funnier, but seems out of character for the gentle giant and painter.

"'Ey Rena. 'Ey Catey," Sprigs says to the two newcomers as Ardan and Terrel help her to her feet. "I 'ope Lizzy ain't lookin' fo' me. We got separated on the way 'ere."

She looks around and sighs, even if Elizabeth did show up, there were already six in the group, and if she joined or if Elizabeth joined, the group would be full.

"Sir Terrel," she says as she looks to the man she had followed and watched paint when she could, though she dearly hoped he never knew that, "Sounds like yer includin' me in that seven. I guess it'd be rude o' me to turn ye down after ye helped me to m'feet. I know Rena and Catey and you and Sir Ardan, but I'm not really familiar with yer friends o'er there."

She points to Valestar and Warren and hoped that they didn't recognize her. The truth was, she'd forgotten their names, though she had taken several classes with them.

But again, she prayed that they didn't know that.

Looking back to Sir Terrel, she frowns.

"Are ye feelin' alright," she asks him in a soft whisper that he can barely hear above the rest of the noise in the cavern.

Female Human Fighter 1 | HP: 11/11 | AC: 20/16/14 (w/o Shield: 18/14/14) | F: +3 R: +6 W: -1 | Per: +3, Init: +4 | Arrows: 20

Sprig, being only five feet tall, is easy to miss in a crowd. She also has a hard time finding anyone in the crowd as she looks about for Elizabeth. She didn't fancy her chances on her own, and knew that she'd wind up having to use the bell if she went at it solo.

But where is Lizzy? They'd gotten separated when they were lead here, mainly because Sprig had gotten distracted looking at some of the artwork on the way, and now the tiny squire was starting to feel the panic set in. It is hard not to call out, but she refuses to make her self seem like a little kid calling for their big sister. There are far too many who thought she'd lied about her age anyway. She can only imagine the snickers that will follow her everywhere if she does something that.

She never does see Sir Ardan before walking into him and knocking herself to the ground after bouncing off the centaur. She looks up, her cheeks already burning crimson.

"I-I'm so sorry! I was lookin' fo' Lizzy and not where I was goin'," She stammers in apology as gets to her feet.

Okay, gear bought. Backgrounds read. Profile updated.

I think Sir Terrel is the PC Sprig would have gotten to know the best, even if it was only because she was following him to his painting spots when she could. I guess it's up to Sir Terrel if he ever caught her or not. She'd know the names of everyone else, I think, but not much about them.

Beyond that, she might know Rena and Catherine since, at least I'm assuming that, the dorms/barracks would have been separated based on sex. She would have had more opportunities to run into them.

Sorry, I know it's not much, but Sprig's friendly, not outgoing. Kinda makes it hard to figure out if she would have gotten to know any of ya without going into what happened over the year and a half we've known each other.

@Sir Ardan: Funny that you mention the HP/SP from Starfinder because GURPS has a similar thing with Hit Points and Fatigue points, though you can still have all your FP and still lose HP since they are different things mechanically.

Now, off to try drawing something and read through everyone's background.

If you want to use it, then there's not much I can do to stop you. I could quit, but that is a childish thing to do just because I don't like a rule. I don't want to quit, so I guess I'll have to live with the rules you decide to put into play. I really wish this had been brought up during recruitment and not right as we're about to play. It feels, I dunno. It's just something that feels like an unpleasant surprise, like thinking you're about to taste something sweet and it turns out bitter instead or that you're going to be eating something with one texture and mouthful, and it's something totally different.

I would argue that you can make things more grim with narrative and don't necessarily implement rules that fundamentally change the character of the game, but I think things have already been decided and I've already made my opinion on this clear, so no point in rehashing things.

Questions:
1. I'd rather theatre of the mind, but Roll20 is alright too.

2. I'm fine either way or with what Warren suggested with some tweaks. (I'd rather not make it too punishing)

3. I get the appeal, but if you're going through that much trouble to state minimums, why not change it to something like:

1d6 => 2+1d4

1d8 => 2+1d6

1d10 => 2+1d8 or 2+2d4

1d12 => 2+1d10 or 4+2d4

or use something more like I use:

1d6 => 3+1d3

1d8 => 4+1d4

1d10 => 5+1d5

1d12 => 6+1d6

4. Okay, this one I'm not going to do. I have a hard enough time leveling a character in a timely manner that I'm not about double the workload by having to maintain two character sheets. If you want me to make changes to how my character sheet is laid out, then I will make them, but I think have everything where I show how I got what I'm getting. I really don't want to go through the trouble of doing everything twice.

And again, this is something that I would have liked to have known was coming in recruitment if you were always planning on doing this.

Apologies if I seem like a jerk here, that last one has left me more than mildly annoyed.

Hello everyone! Sorry for my lateness, I've just now had a chance to check on the thread.

Re: Injury System - I'm going to be honest, I am not a fan of it. There's something in Skull and Shackles that is kinda like this, though there was a damage threshold or required a critical, but to me, it results in two things.

1) It takes away the narrative impact of having a character maimed in a scarring way, even if the detriments are only temporary. To me, if you're going to potentially handicap a character, then it should have some narrative weight to it. It should be a boss and not some nameless bandit that happened to get lucky taking out a PC's eye or crippling them.

2) It changes the tone of the game. I was expecting something closer to swashbuckling high-fantasy with some gaslamp fantasy (Think Girl Genius) thrown in for flavor. This makes things more gritty and darker, and I don't want to play that.

That isn't to say that characters can't or shouldn't die, that would take away some of the fun of a tough fight I think. I do think that like crippling injuries, character deaths should have meaning and impact, but I'm not going to whine too much if Sprig is on the receiving end of a lethal crit. I just hope that her death will serve a purpose.

Now that I've thrown my two cents in on that topic, time to catch up with the rest of the thread.

And the plan for Sprig is to have her go into Paladin at fourth level. I don't think any party that gets picked is going to be hurting too much for healers.

It's no bigger. Honestly it'd make more sense for her to have weapon focus in polearms since Shelyn's favored weapon is the glaive.

And if I'm being honest. The higher average damage while 1-handing it versus a longsword is pretty appealing to me. I've been in fights where it's felt like I was needling the enemies with a butterknife. It's not fun.

That's 18 to undergo the training, right?

Sir Ardan wrote:
Have you considered building into any prestige classes?

Sorry for not answering sooner. I haven't really considered it, I was thinking three levels of fighter then going Paladin the rest of the way.

I did go through the PrCs you recommended and I'm not really feeling any of them to be honest. Some could be used for cool characters, but none of them felt like they fit Sprig. Crimson Templar would be an especially bad fit flavor-wise. She's a follower of Shelyn and while on the aloof side, cares for others deeply. The first time we fight people and not monsters is going to be...hard. She's going to try and get them to surrender and when that fails, she's going to try to not kill them. That doesn't sound like good material for a Crimson Templar. Two of the others require a different god from what I see, so they're out. One of the remaining two is pretty clearly meant for followers of Iomedae, though it might work for a Shelynite. The last one, Sentinel, just didn't speak to me.

Thank you for your suggestions, though. I did look at them, but like I said, nothing really stood out to me as something that would fit Sprig.

I did go back and look over yours and Plastic Dragon's character backgrounds. There's some good stuff there.

Alias updated, still need to do the quick reference stats, but that can wait until I get gear sorted.

I've read through Sir Terrel's profile, and I have to say that I am sorely tempted to switch EWP(Bastard Sword) for Weapon Focus (Polearms). That can be a scary combo, especially in cramped hallways.

Oh, and you've got a great character there. If you're still looking for ideas for secrets and ways to tie him into the world, maybe there's a garden he likes to go to and practice with his watercolors. Perhaps he has a secret admirer that leaves him paints and brushes. Maybe his talents have caught a patron's eye.

I know of one PC that may sneak out after you and watch while you paint. :3
