I feel like this would need some sort of banned list. There are PFS options I would consider too strong for a reasonable pvp game. It sounds fun though.

Team Objective based games would probably lead to more interesting characters. Even simple classics like capture the flag can add a lot to a game.

This is something we've considered. As well as 2v2, 3v3, PvEn and so on, but id like to kick it off with a 1v1 bracket style tourney and then expand from there.

Owner of the bar is open to a full table top setting on Sundays if the kickoff goes well, so Il have plenty of room for innovation after that.

Maybe even prebuilt equipment packages. Im not sure. Im still in the promoting phase lol

Welln it starts at first level. And the equipment will likely be controlled buy in game purses and so on. Some items will certainly be unavailable. But as far as builds gon id like tonleave it open and handle the cheese on a case-by-case if the reception warrants an encore.

I know that some class matchups are PSR, but lick is still gonna play a huge factor. Without it though, versatile characters may end up having an edge since some arenas are gonna affect how useful certain abilities are. I.E. a forest arena would be awesome for a rogue, but not so much an wizard.

You dont think that the game would balance itself? In the endn the players that know the system would have an edge, but they cant account for every random opponent and terrain.

Far as I can tell, most people want to have losers brackets, so killing would be frowned upon. As far as the modes being restricted, we were figuring that starting at 1stish would help eliminate that kind of thing, and soeed up the matches, but that if the finals took a while it would work towards the spectacle.

That said, Ive always liked the idea of pregens, but have yet to find gamers that are willing when its time to start the game.

We're still ironing out a lot of the details, but character creation was gonna be one of the high points since, as Im fully aware from my own experiences, it gets frustrating to be overwhelmed with good ideas that never see a table.

Im starting by drawing up a setting for the Arena itself, to try and attract some roleplaying draw. Gonna print two sets of fliers. One that appeals to the character development and another that stresses the story. But in the end its just gonna be a good old fashioned d20 bloodbath...

The general idea is to use character creation guidelines, like PFS, to allow players to enter prior to the actual event and then use a bracket system to narrow the event down to a championship match.

Characters would start at some yet-to-be-determined level, and advance if they won.

I have an unlimited number of considerations to table with my local gamers. I'm really just looking for anything that I might be missing that affects the viability of the idea in the first place.

Has anyone ever tried to run an arena for pathfinder? Theres a venue in my town that is openly recruiting new business, and I had the idea of trying to get some tabletop started on Sundays. I had the idea to kick it off by running an arena tournament, but I'm not sure how much interest it would generate.

I guess I'm just looking for feedbackn if anyone is willing to weigh in.

Larger list of concepts I like. But the execution is off on a lot of them. Too many feel themed for a particular character. I've allowed myself to get a little too excited over some titles too.

Dedicated Voter Season 7

Trying to guess the few that will absolutely make it in. Have two so far.

Dedicated Voter Season 7

So many repeats and still haven't seen mine. I have had the pleasure of voting for my favorite about 5 times though.

Dedicated Voter Season 7

Haven't spotted mine yet. Bad luck I guess. Gnight all.

I've seen one repeatedly that is just utterly fantastic. Simple and neat. I'm seriously adding it to my games.

Staff in a glove. Rod in some other thing I forgot. I really want to play a character decked out in some of these to break a GM.

Dedicated Voter Season 7

Only seen one thing that could be talking about mine. Negative, but true.

Dedicated Voter Season 7

I just hope all items were repeatedly voted on equally (and that everyone who got mine during the glitch saw it paired up favorably :) ).

I'm suddenly wondering if I remembered to hit 'Submit'.
I'd relax on that score. I was about 300+ votes before I saw my item, and I haven't seen it since!
But, you see ... that would be pretty typical of me, forgetting to actually click 'Submit'. ;)

Go to the main page. It'll thank you for your submission below the "Vote Now" bit.

If I had the patience to copy every entry and offer them as the only items in a game, it would be amazing.

Yeah, feel like I've already seen the best item. Pretty dope...

I think that sometimes there is a line to be drawn between punishing players for disruptive behavior, and characters that misstep themselves into trouble. If a player/character does something silly I might ask if they actually did it first, and then I'll play it out as reasonably as possible. Just depends on the time and the game. I'm generally forgiving of out of game disruption, but if something in game will kill you, it will kill you. No two ways around it. I don't like impromptu "back doors" because they take away the urgency of actions in hairy situations. Its not punishment so much as cause and effect.

Now,I can usually tell the difference between a character that is a troublemaker and a player that is just being a douche. I don't blame the player for playing their character. Though they may rethink their choice if the PC is too reckless for the group. We actually have a guy that volunteered to retire a character because of the likelihood that he'd get the rest of the party killed (or get killed by them). Which brings up another point. It should really be the other players at the table, or their characters, that take the responsibility of reeling in an out of control comrade. They're the ones that are ultimately going to suffer. The GM is just the world, and adventurers die everyday. The dudes that are circling the drain with the fool that just randomly pulled a hand crossbow and fired a poisoned arrow at the head priest are the ones that need to decide what too do with him if they survive. Most good players wont let another character drag them into a no win situation anyway.

That said, GMs can be a problem. For example, I have played with GMs that would rule anything said at certain times was "in game" which blew a lot of simple scenarios up into situations. I've also played with groups that will just hang out for more time then we actually play. Both can get annoying, but honestly I'm fine with either as long as I know what game I'm playing in. If I know that my GM has spent a lot of time planning a story, then yeah, I try and let him tell it when it gets involved. And I can understand why someone would get frustrated if a player up and ruins weeks of planning just because they can. Like Ravingdork said though, it seems easier to just say "Hey guys. This is important." Sometimes you have to select your group well too. I know that the group that I play with is handcrafted after years of experience, and we get along fine for the most part. When we do have an issue we bring it up. Sometimes available gamers can be sparse though. In the end, its a game and everyone, including the GM is there to have fun.

As far as transparent rolling goes, anyone can quickly figure out a monsters stats by glancing at a die and hearing a result, so that can lead to metagaming. Or the dread curse of the honest player: reverse-metagaming. Ugh...

What about polymorph spells like Monstrous Physique? Is it a size bonus to natural armor? Or would it just overlap any existing natural armor?

The Pit-Touched bloodline is actually pretty nice. Its a variant of the Infernal. You keep the melee touch (no save) that gives the shaken condition for 1/2 you level (-2 in this case) rounds and get a total + 6 to Con. A step farther and you get bat wings. Potential downsides are that you have to take Skill Focus: Diplomacy to start, and that any creature shaken by the touch radiates evil. But depending on the character concept a easy intimidate a few times a day, 3 hit points per level, and 60 ft flight (avg) ain't too shabby.

Which is affected first when you take damage?

yeah, I use ablative barrier constantly. so I was wondering how useful this would be. very, it turns out.

"Prerequisites: Cannot have a patron deity.

Benefit: Once per day when you have half your total hit points or fewer, you may heal yourself of an amount of damage equal to 1d8 plus your total Hit Dice as a move action. This is a supernatural ability.

Special: You can take this feat more than once. Each time you do, you may heal yourself one additional time per day."

Does it heal an equal amount of nonlethal as well?

I'd say yeah, since a non-inquisitor gets the effective bump in regards to bane.

1) yes you need a UMD to use any spells on the staff not on your spell list.

2) staff charge is communal. There is no charge for each spell. Any spell the staff has can be used to recharge the staff.

3) it's spell trigger...like wands so it is the same check.

4) no, you do not need to meet the stat requirement. It is a spell trigger, not completion. Your DC however will b based on your rather low stat.

Right, except not completely clear on #2

"...the caster must forgo one prepared spell or spell slot of a level equal to the highest-level spell cast by the staff."

You don't need to know the highest level spell, but you do need to burn a spell level equal to it.

I guess that comes down to weighing the ring slots vs limited feats. Still, at will would be nice. However, in the case of the feat, he's "unarmed".

So, if you were to make a ring of shadow weapon for a rogue it'd be pretty dope.

Dust Raven wrote:
Yes, ans as Ssalarn says it is still treated as a the spells actual level, not the level slot you are preparing it in. Though if you know Heightened Spell, you might as well apply it.
Yeah, this. If you're playing a druid with a 12 Wis, every spellslot higher than 2 becomes free meta-magic feat territory. If, for instance, you're Dm-ing when 3E first came out, you might accidentally severely limit the number of spells people can prepare at your table. ( No, I'm not speaking from experience, I don't know why you'd ask that.)

Not sure about other metamagic feats but:

"Benefit: A heightened spell has a higher spell level than normal (up to a maximum of 9th level). Unlike other metamagic feats, Heighten Spell actually increases the effective level of the spell that it modifies. All effects dependent on spell level (such as saving throw DCs and ability to penetrate a lesser globe of invulnerability) are calculated according to the heightened level.

Level Increase: The heightened spell is as difficult to prepare and cast as a spell of its effective level"

That last bit suggests that you'd still need the required attribute.

After all, have you "attacked"? or tried to?

Since the spell says "causing harm indirectly is not an attack" I assume that you need to cause harm, which you have not done until the attack is resolved.

That brings up another question. Do you lose it if you miss?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

What level are you? And how far away is it? If youre a high enough monk then you may be the fastest courier around lol.

You get the highest that applies. So if the attack doesn't bypass the 5/magic, you get that. If it does, then you still get the 3/-.

If someone makes their save to disbelieve a shadow weapon, does it still deal sneak attack damage? since it still does 1 point of damage?

Maybe I'm being lazy, but I can't find anything that explains the degree to which you can "move" the basic illusion spells (silent, minor, or major image). Can you make them move intelligently or react in any way? since you're concentrating on them? Any reference to the answer would be great.

I'd suggest the campaign journals section of the message boards. You can find some fairly well summaried ones there.

Didn't know that existed. Thank you.
