About Sildred

On humble street beneath concern of Queen
We follow some man of contradictions
Before the light he stands a man of law
But in reserve, heretic unobserved
Not content in his native country Vira
To feather the cap of some Duxotar
Demon-led to bring victims from afar.

Borne by talented disguise presently
He brings today in kinkéd, wicked court
The suit of merchants cut from cowardly
Stock, watered down Chelaxian men once of means
Who, ambition lost, now must keep their spleens.

Their erstwhile fortunes are promised now to
Dukes Infernal by Mayors bound and loyal
To evil cause, kindly bent to torture
That servant who denies their just reward.

These are the concerns of Nethys’ cleric.
For hidden among shadows of Westcrown
There are those who would our friend cut down.

Background:
1) When the moon was half in shadow, half alight, there was born to the Egorani arm of the Leroung family a boy. From his mother's pronouncement, he was called Sildred, and given to the church of Nethys in hopes that he might become a powerful mage. He was raised within the temple - a converted Vira, or Chelish estate. Here the family kept him far outside the city. Safe and away from the tides of dynastic politics.

2) In the countryside, the masters trained him to focus his mind, and spill forth the divine might of magic. While other temples might work towards simple things like knowledge or study, the Egorani temple was concerned solely with the accumulation of prestige and power. The nobles at courts throughout the land have need of artifacts, magicks to tip the balance of their political power, or tokens of darkness to lay at the feet of their dark patrons. These services, the temple is more than glad to provide them for a steep price. While rarely visited by the Leroung family, Sildred's presence among the ranks of the faithful academy provided a drastic discount in the favor of his blood relations.

3) Formal advancement was withheld after the students' fundamentals were laid. For further secrets or lessons, competition was encouraged. This atmosphere promoted an *unhealthy* spirit of rivalry among the apprentices, as they fought for the approval and protection of
mentors-who warped the rules to meet their changing needs,
or the trust of rivals-who turned into bitter opponents as a matter of course.

4) The boy made his family proud, given little choice but to keep his wits about him. He was deft in the classroom, adept with the channeling of dark energies, and wise enough to remain unobtrusive and unremarked among his classmates until their herd had been thinned to lower numbers.

5) There came a time when he witnessed a great harm befall a colleague, for Sildred does not seem at once comfortable with the term 'friends' after so many years of studied backstabbing. The most vile among the mentors, Mistress Iltarail was a woman most at the Vira suspected to actually be a demon. She set about publicly demonstrating her disappointment with a senior acolyte. Lady Iltarail removed the failure's ribs while her victim was still breathing. Then, she used the same bones to carve, puncture, and illustrate to some thirty pupils the appropriate spiritual lines that pool, refine, and distribute magical energy in the body of a 28 year old half-elf female.

6) The next morning, young acolyte Leroung left early to pursue rumors of a disappeared mentor in Westcrown. The master, one Caderi Pemarion, had been expecting the arrival of some number of important magical items of mysterious provenance. First, the shipments disappeared. Master Pemarion took leave to find them, but that was five years ago. At first, Master Pemarion would write to his junior acolytes on the maintenance of his affairs. However, the flow of letters was cut off, and inquisitive replies were met with still further silence.

Personality:
Growing up in the palatial temple of Nethys has given Sildred an air of superiority. He believes that the demon-worshipers are foolish to pursue what he sees as a lesser god. He gives lip-service only to the devils. After seeing how the nobles in their games of influence relied upon the temple of Nethys for magical power and crafting services, he has adopted a similarly mercenary attitude.

This is not to say that his talents lie in crafting. Sildred has of late become fixated on the disappearances he has tracked among Wiscrani citizens. Sildred is not one to secrete himself among safe and quiet rows of books while the Leroung name hangs in the balance. He hopes to close in discretely on this invisible threat. Only then, when the time is right, does a Leroung deliver unto his opponents misfortune and surprise.

Appearance:
Out of the corner of your eye, you see a tall figure, human. It is a thin man with stern features. Although he cannot be more than thirty years of age, his hair is snowy white, gone grey prematurely. A silk cloak of black is draped over his shoulders, but underneath you can see patches of leather armor showing through. The boots he wears bear the red pentagram symbol of Asmodeus, and he certainly appears to be well armed. Fitting then, that he keeps the company of the many sellswords in this neighborhood. A keen eye will also note he doesn’t have the hands of a sailor or craftsman When you sit down at cards with him, you might notice another pouch beside his purse.

Smooth hands? Spell components in the bag maybe? A wizard perhaps? Or worse… is this man an inquisitor?

Motivation:
-Primary-Now in Westcrown, he stepped away from the temple to seek the secret of a mentor's disappearance from several years ago. He hopes that uncovering the source of this disappearance may unlock power, artifacts, influence which he can use to gain prestige within the church. In this manner he avoids some of the petty infighting the apprentice clerics are known for in the Egorani temple, to boot.
-Secondary- As a native to Cheliax, he understands better than most visiting clerics. He understands the torture, the flaying of souls and sundering of divine scriptures as only a Chelaxian can. He hopes to pass unnoticed by the inquisitorial authorities for as long as possible. For this reason he has attempted to pass himself off as a lesser barrister. His research? "Why, it is for concerned party that wishes to remain discrete and anonymous." (Nevermind that that client is the church of Nethys.)

Connections:
Sildred's client pool so far. He assists them in selecting key passages of the Asmodean Disciplines. They then helpfully bring these relevant passages to the attention of visiting inquisitors or local priest/judges. Such action certainly helps their personal interests advance, opening the door for bribes, or perhaps freedom, but definitely not corruption of the infernal legal system. In a simpler world, you would call Sildred a junior lawyer, but we live in Cheliax. So, let us call him an advocate for the most loyal of the beautiful and fair Queen's subjects.
Rolaire Tohbarna - Merchant trader from Westpool, Rolaire lost a valuable shipment of barrow-wood and an escaped elven slave. The slave was a hostage from the northern elven tribes. Rolaire promised delivery of the slave to the mayor of Westpool. Now that the cargos are gone, Rolaire’s competitors want his head... He hopes Sildred can solve his woes with a little hocus-pocus and hard work. For this reason he has made a strong effort to butter up Sildred lately. Rolaire needs to convince Sildred to take on an investigation, or he will suffer a terrible fate. For whatever good it is worth, Rolaire claims to have known Master Pemarion in some capacity.
Pavo Pescarini - A fishmonger near the docks. Patriarch of a large poor family, Pavo is nearing retirement age. He is getting ready to hand over his business to his three sons. Sildred is a common patron of Pavo's family's market stall, and has looked out for the old man's interests recently.
Riffar - A greenskin mercenary. This half-orc worked as a mercenary in town for a decade. After botching a recent job, the nobles blacklisted him from service. He relies on his connections among the half-orc community in Westcrown to act as a headhunter - pairing barbarians with appropriate jobs. Riffar is smarter than he looks, and over a few games in the public house, Sildred and he developed a respect for one another.
