Silas did not actually prepare his second extract. I'd prefer to take my chances if that's alright - its no fun if you can't legitimately fear character death IMO. If people don't mind I'll roll heal checks to save them the trouble. So as long as someone conscious is willing to try administering first aid to stop him bleeding out he ought to survive. Con Check: 1d20 + 1 - 9 ⇒ (6) + 1 - 9 = -2

Miffed at the ineffectivness of his tactic Silas dismisses the darkness and takes a step back, sneering at the halfling, "I believe I was next, I'm getting rather bored, are you finished drooling yet?"

I am assuming that the light is dim since we appear to be in a narrow alley way and I think it was late in the day, if not I'll take different actions. Silas steps back and readies to bring forth the darkness that he has always been able to call just before their enemies strike again calling, "Wait for the light to strike Pathfinders!" Essentially hoping to give them a 50% miss chance then have everyone delay until after Silas dismisses the darkness.

Ah, okay the situations very different than I thought.[/ooc] Silas flings his a vial just behind their strange assailant, knowing that if he strikes directly he will catch Kennaniah, and scowls as he realizes his bardiche leaves him in the best position to meet the assault - despite his instincts to retreat. You actually target a grid intersection rather than a square - don't like that rule its confusing, but it is the rule. He targets the one bottom right of the halfling a square. The miss roll puts it one closer to Silas and one up on the map. So the four squares "hit" are two wall, the halflings and the one between him and Silas. For the record I cannot see any mist on the map.

My understanding is that you should only be able to see the halfling if you are adjacent to him. Basically you see misty stuff in the next square and just white beyond that. Reasoning out his foes position from Ken's expressions and the fact that he cannot see their foe Silas flings a bomb aiming ten feet away so he does not catch his colleague. Sila's eyebrows raise at Kennaniah's speech, and shakes his head, as the pickled old crone attempts to escape, "I do not share my colleagues rose tinted ideals, but I do know this. If I were hiding medicines from the Churches of Desna, Irori, and the Townguard, in a children's room buried amidst their clothing, I would want to ensure that anyone who might be about to march out and inform all those groups of my decidedly odd choices knew all the mitigating circumstances. I would also bare in mind that I better be able to produce some evidence for my claims since said person would likely believe me to be as pickled in lies as booze and take my every claim with a small wagon load of salt." Oh, and yes literally holding a ladder, LOL. Bracing with a foot on the bottom step and one hand while posting with the other, perfectly safe I promise - we were apple picking.

Satisfied the alchemist closes the closet and sneaks out of the room and back down the stairs joining the others, "It seems our entrepreneurial host has been receiving medicines from at least three different sources, four if we include our own altruists. Spoiler: Hmmm, I a little at a loss here. Silas is very suspicious of someone who sends children out to work, and attempts to claim charity, and receives donations from strange people. Essentially he is thinking worst case scenario not this is likely. He probably believes she is a harmless old woman with an innocent explanation, but also that in that event he'll suffer zero negative consequences. He's envisioning some kind of Fagan type who must indeed be a con artist to get with it, and thus someone who is a great liar.
I was thinking of it as, received believable information from suspect source, if true no worries if false could be bad. Essentially I'm viewing Silas as someone who analyses facts and basing his extrapolation upon the factual statements which seem at odds. I don't think this really works after reading bluff again though, and I suppose I'm trying to attribute qualities to Int that PF gives to Wis.

Silas scowls, but waits at the bottom of the stairs until they have ascended before following stealthily. I see no particularly troubling consequences should I be caught and her reasons for taking one up are utter nonsense - given she has taken the clanking cleric. Once reaches the landing he stays put at the top of the stairs, pulling a vial into his hand to be used as an excuse for his unauthorized excursion. Taking 10 on stealth for, well, a ten, but staying well back, etc.

Silas raises a brow, saying to Wayne in a whisper, "Hmmm, if she is using them to earn reimbursement that seems fairly admirable, but whether she ought to be able to claim charity when she is likely already earning via the children is another matter. I applaud her efforts, so long as she is paying taxes, which the relatively clandestine nature of her activities makes me doubt."

"Mmmm, well no, but I only approve of the ones who treat their slaves properly, its just my experience that most slave owners are not like that. Treating slaves poorly is generally foolish, a poorly treated slave will be less productive and might just slit your throat some night. Maybe my experience is biased because I am largely familiar with household slavery as opposed to larger operations, I am certainly willing to disapprove of poor treatment and unnecessary cruelty, Silas responds, watching Kennaniah deal with the children veiled in his cowl.

"I really do not, our slaves worked no more than I did. Would a slave on a farm really have more chores to do than a free child? Farm life is hard and there is a great deal of work to be done, someone must do it and most farmers are not wealthy. People tend to see those who own slaves as inherently evil, but in cultures where such practices are common slavery is controlled by laws and social norms. Your average slave owner will not work a child near to death, and while there are undoubtedly some bad masters are there not bad parents."

I have to confess I did not catch it, but now its pointed out LOL. I did google P.Cullen and get a bit puzzled! I'm calling long day on that :) "No, do you? I would say ninty percent of children do some form of labour, is that not so? Farm children do hours of chores each day, apprentices more, I would judge only noble children and the tiny fraction fortunate enough to enjoy other schooling are exempt. I would have imagined that true even in "free" Andoran, but perhaps I am in error? I confess I have not looked into the subject, but I certainly worked as a child, and alongside our slaves more often than not."

Silas sighs, aware that his sparkling personality has won him another friend, [b]"If my assumptions are correct she is nothing like me, I am no thief, I believe in law and order. Those who flout the rules must expect to be punished for doing so. Now, do we wish to split up? It might be expedient, but if the lady possesses some means of protection it may prove risky. 5 Charisma for the win! And OOC slavery boo, charity yay, Ayn Rand interesting but ultimately misguided.

Silas, who has trudged along doing his damdest to look unobtrusive as Kenniniah canvases the local populace rasps his laugh, "I'd wager good gold she's sending the children to pick pockets, or some such villainy, during the day. How should we proceed, we might simply follow the children when they leave, or we could have Kenniniah talk to one of them? We might have missed their daily excursion already." Can Silas prompt Kenneniah to ask what Mr and Mrs Anthos what time the children are typically sent off, and can you give us the current approximate time please GM G?

"I've little trust for "rights" that are plucked out of nothing, if such a right is inherent are the people of Cheliax all defying some divine law? Asmodeus certainly advocates slavery and there are few that would dare question his position as one of the greater gods, so if the gods themselves do not agree that freedom is a right whence does it come from? In my opinion very few truths are self evident two plus two will always equal four, but I can imagine dozens of scenarios where slavery is a reasonable and indeed optimal course. Further if we do accept freedom as a right then surely it is a right that can be lost? Otherwise no form of imprisonment is acceptable, and what of the freedom to murder, the freedom to steal? These are not small philosophical matters, but I would simply ask that you consider the glorious array of grey which is morality - black and white are rarely as clear as they seem."

Yes, and why not buy them all ponies so they can ride to the end of the rainbow where you are presumably expecting the pot of gold that pays for this idyllic life to be. I'll grant its nice in theory, but for most orphans its simply never going to happen, a slave treated properly has a far better life than your average gutter rat. I just think such matters are usually a farce. If you simply rounded up all the orphans and sold them you would have less crime, revenue, and they would have better lives. Freedom is lovely in theory, but in practice most slaves have as much freedom as the working man and enjoy protections besides. People here slave and think of the worst case scenario, but for the most part slavery is a civilised and useful compact." Silas replies, enjoying a spot of debate.

Silas shrugs, "I have no particular objection to them, but charity tends to serve everyone poorly in my opinion. Teach a child the bad habit of suckling at the charitable teat and you have an adult with few skills and a sense of entitlement and are considerably poorer for it. Sell the same child into slavery and they will work for their keep, learn valuable skills and possibly enrich you. I argue slavery is the kinder option."

Silas nods, rolling his eyes a bit and the do gooder nonsense, but having no real objection so long as he is not forced to spout such drivel, "Very well we shall see it done, let us be off," and he leads the way to the Eastgate District and Auntie Baldwin's muttering, "I thought the Pathfinders were a sensible organization, I suppose charity does buy you a certain amount of positive reputation, but really isn't it just do gooder code for haemorrhaging money? Feed an orphan for a day and you've got to feed him the next, or there was very little point. Surely such pitiful creatures would be better off enslaved where they can be put to useful ends and provided for..." Silas opinions are obviously not my own!

Silas looks up noticing the key thanks to Wayne, "Hmmm, I should be able to reach that, I think it best we leave that, is the scepter magical Kenneniah?" He extends his bardiche carefully above his head holding to the very butt and carefully lining it up so he can trap the string against the ceiling and press the sharp edge of his polearm to it to sever the thread. If the key falls he examines it carefully trying to discern if it seems to suit one of the remaining locks. I figure it should be in range of a reach weapon Silas being just over 5ft.

As gently as he can Silas attempts to hook the wicker of the basket with his bardiche so he can tip it over, then knock the basket away and lift the fabric until the key falls free. If he manages that he picks the key up on the blade and asks, "Is the key magic or the fabric?"

Sirus remains silent as the sage speaks and once they are locked in moves forward to study the chests intently, "Fascinating, let us act with care here, we appear to be in no immediate danger so we should take our time," suiting inaction to words he takes several minutes to study each chest and the basket in turn, "Can anyone tell me if any of this is magical? If nothing else presents itself I suggest we step back and I use my bardiche to uncover the basket from a distance." Taking 20 on Perception for a 23.

Silas storms out still sulking about his poor performance, "What was next on the list? Ah, yes, we need to obtain permission to enter a vault in Sothis for the Society from some Osirion, Drandnet Salharin. To the Wise Quarter then," he leads the way, still muttering darkly.
