I was having a discussion with my group the other day, and one of our players mentioned he hates saving throws. I'm not saying I agree, or even knew what to say to him, but his argument was this:

1) Two of the three saving throws are redundant skills. Reflex is the same as Acrobatics, and Fort is the same as Endurance. (Willpower is the obvious exception.)

2) Saving throws take the "roll" away from casters. His opinion is that part of the fun of playing melee is rolling to see if you hit. Spells, on the other hand, shift the roll to the defender. While that can be fun too, it makes being a caster fundamentally less active in play. He would rather have a static value to roll spell hit against.

What do you guys think?

Sounds like your guys wants to play 4e, because that is exactly how it works in that game

I would also recommend Eldritch Heritage and pick the arcane bloodline to get arcane bond with your weapon, if for no other reason than the free bonus spontaneous spell. I also happen to like the enhancing it with out needing the feats.

I feel like they need more going on here for the Samurai, the one class feature just doesn't feel like enough. He should get a few more bonuses, I mean since you guys are going more in the historical direction. It would fall in line well as the cavalier gets bonuses to charge so too should the samurai with mounted archery.

Just make it easier for him to hit and run using a longbow with ease while mounted. And maybe some damage increases for move and shoot tactics seeing as there isn't a charge like multiplier for ranged. And samurai did train and use firearms but that might be venturing into territory that you don't want to go.

Just my thoughts on the Samurai.

Wait, lances lose reach? Where does it say that? I know that it can be used one-handed, but you could still use it two-handed for the extra damage, which would be substantial with the multipliers from charging with a lance.

Your right i was wrong about the reach thing

So I'm making a Goblin Cavalier with a Goblin Dog as his mount, but I am a little unclear as to how mounted combat works. When I charge while mounted, do both the rider and mount get attacks? What about in situations with reach weapons, such as a lance, using ride-by-attack? Does the rider get to make an attack when within reach, then the mount keeps moving and gets to make its bite attack?

What if I give my mount the mobility feat? Does that mean that only it gets +4 against AoOs, but what about the rider? The mount is the one moving him.

Ok so the player not the mount gets to attack on a charge, there is either a feat or a skill trick taught threw handle animal that lets it attack as well. A lance becomes a on handed weapon without reach and deals double damage on a hit. Ride by attack makes it so that you do not provoke AoOs.
