I don't have a single problem that couldn't be solved by being 30 years younger, 60 pounds lighter and quintupling my income. :-) Other than that, nothing to complain about anybody would want to listen to.

Scout is not always diplomatic and doesn't usually suffer fools that well. From his point of view the priest's incompetence is not the circus's problem. Scout might have been more charitable if we had been in the area for a while and had decent cash reserves and a reliable fan base. But as things stand the group is too close to the edge to be taking potentially serious risks for minimal gain just because some idiot thinks we can be drafted.

Scout says, "Is it not obvious from the priest's actions? Surely Thyr must be the god of theft and extortion. The priest and his men have just robbed us of our chance to make our livelihood in our usual manner, and now he seems intent on trying to force us to undertake a task that a group of trained adventurers passed on. That regardless of the fact that he has armed men of his own to do his bidding."

Scout says to Sergei, "We haven't even known Tarrio for 2 whole days yet. It's hard to say how honest and trustworthy he is." Turning to Jack, Scout says, "As most of the area here is paved, trying to track anybody by any means other than keeping them in sight is beyond my ability."

Scout takes the note and puts it in one of his pockets. He gestures to Jack to follow him and goes to talk to Zathyl. Scout says, "I found a note that Veilwar left. He said he was going to check out Tarrio. Given that he's got a reasonable chance of doing that without getting noticed it might be a good idea to leave him to it. Our best bet for dealing with the obnoxious priest is probably going to be to let Simon handle it. However, while I know almost nothing of the government here, I didn't think it was a theocracy. Perhaps the priest is overstepping his authority? Maybe we should talk to the city guard about that."

Scout thinks, "This is strange. I wonder why that bozo would make a straight line to us. Is he the sort of weirdo who gets scared by clowns? Still, Tarrio disappeared and he is a definite wild card. Don't know him at all. And where did Veilwar get to?" Perception check looking for Veilwar: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24 Scout whispers to Jack:"I haven't stolen anything since I joined this circus over 30 years ago. I'm pretty sure that nobody in our group did. Though I do wonder where Veilwar went. The other guys we linked up with yesterday I have no clue about, except for Tarrio who I would want to talk to about this. At any rate, let's go chat with Zathyl."

Zathyl Sathis wrote: "So... It seems they want the "ringmaster" so that we can start the main show. Should we go get Simon so we can start this?" Zathyl says, currently picking up Slatha and the table after his little performance. Scout says, "We may as well get Simon."

Assuming that Zathyl and Slatha are finished, Scout will go on stage and do a performance. It will be in 4 parts. Part 1, juggling - taking '10' with a result of 18. Part 2, juggling - going all out. Sleight of Hand check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 And he bumbles one of the fancier bits almost dropping his clubs. Part 3, tumbling - taking '10' with a result of 18. Part 4, tumbling - going all out. Acrobatics Check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 And he knocks it out of the park with some triple back flips and somersaults.

Scout comments, "The problem is that it will be almost impossible to find him if he doesn't want to be found. Unless there is some way to detect his ring when it is active we could only wander around and hope that he would choose to talk to one of us."

Scout goes out where the people can see him. He says, "We are members of a circus that has just arrived here from the Empire. We will be performing several shows throughout the day. Fear not, our regular announcer has a much better speaking voice than I do. For now I'll just give you a tiny taste of what's to come." Scout does a couple of simple juggling routines with his clubs (takes 10) and then goes back to helping prepare for the show and working with the horse that Sergei will lift.

Scout says, "I don't know about that. If people think the show is over they may start to leave. However, if you really want to pick a horse up, I could lead one on stage and say it has a problem with its hoof. You could then lift the horse up so I could get a good look at its hoof and pretend to work on it."

I have no problem with Scout having been used as an "alarm clock". :-) It just makes sense. Scout says, "Thanks for the help Sergei." The heavy work having been done, Scout changes into his performing outfit.

Scout is somewhat relieved that they aren't going to have to move the wagons. As he doesn't need to sleep he's not overly worried about the local regulations on sleeping in tents. Though the rule does strike him as silly in the current context.

Group 2 Scout gestures towards Flying Jack as he replies to the guard, "My friend and I are performers with the circus that you see before you. We have just arrived here from the Empire. As this is a small circus we all perform many different tasks, and for all practical purposes you could say we are all part owners of this circus. The other members of the circus are at one of the taverns." "Regardless of all that, we are aware that we could interfere with traffic and we are willing to make minor adjustments as needed."

Scout replies, "What I am feeling tonight is suspicious. I would rather get a rake and prepare the ground around the wagons as we discussed earlier." Which of course assumes the plaza isn't paved. If the plaza is paved then Scout won't try to rake it, but would rather keep a close watch on things than play. Given the brief on city customs Scout will wear his leather armor, but not his bigger weapons (heavy crossbow, morningstar). He will have his sap, dagger, throwing darts and gladius.

Scout listens to Veilwar voice his concerns. Scout comments, "You're right. The guy who can turn invisible is a potential problem. Simply keeping an eye out for him is not going to work. However, if we were to get rakes and do a good job of raking the dirt around a wagon or two we want to protect we might be able to spot him by the tracks he would make. "

There are several different ways we can handle this. 1) Everybody goes to one of the restaurants, Scout included so he can join in the conversation at the table even though he doesn't need to eat. Hopefully all our stuff will still be where we left it when we return. 2) Everybody except Scout raids a restaurant. Scout remains with the wagons keeping an eye on things and taking care of the animals. 3) We split up into two groups and raid restaurants in shifts with one group staying with the wagons. 4) We arrange for the whole group to eat by the wagons. I don't recommend option 1. Option 2 will work and realistically probably happened quite a bit in times past. It's just boring for me as a player. Option 3 will work, but we're still going to need to get the whole group together to talk about things. I think option 4 is likely the best and likely to be cheaper.

There you go, I tend to "optimize" for a "general purpose" role. Which to some extent is a contradiction in terms. :-) But I don't like being so welded into a specific niche that I'm all but useless outside it. Regardless of any other considerations though, this is a game. You spend time playing it in order to have fun. Whether or not somebody agrees with me the only way they can play the game "wrong" is to not have fun. So, if Simon's player is enjoying running the character and the rest of the party isn't having to constantly jump through hoops to keep him alive, then he's doing it right. Given that how much work our characters may have to do to keep one another alive has yet to be determined then it is too early to critique builds based on that. Too much depends on how the campaign develops. But based on all the initial information we got Simon can probably do fine as the party face and in various performance roles without having to worry too much about other considerations.

The potential problem is that what I consider to be "must have" talents for the way that I normally run a rogue might not fit your character concept. The two talents that I take first are Trap Spotter and Fast Stealth. Which might not work for your character. I would suggest that you look at the Minor Magic and Major Magic rogue talents which would give you a wizard cantrip you could use three times a day and a first level spell you could use twice a day as spell-like abilities. When I select those talents for a rogue I will usually choose either Mage Hand or Message for the cantrip and usually either Shield or Feather Fall for the first level spell. Obviously you might want to pick more performance related options. I'll need to go back through my book and notes to come up with more ideas. Most of the stuff I usually do is either buffing standard rogue abilities, improving combat performance or helping with defense. Most of which might not help a performance oriented character. Also, just between you and me, when I "optimize" a character the minimum stat I will take for any ability other than Charisma is a 10, and I won't let Charisma go below 8 if at all possible. Other people's mileage obviously varies and most people wouldn't take my musings as gospel in any event. But it is my curmudgeonly belief that you can run into more problems caused by the low stats in the long run than one super high stat may be worth.

I have been staying silent largely because I don't normally run bards and don't have all the splat books. But if you were to ask me about rogues, I could go on forever. And just possibly horrify some people as my idea of what an "optimized" rogue looks like differs quite a bit from what people on the character optimization forums might think an "optimized" rogue looks like. But given that I've been playing DnD off and on since the mid 1970's I am somewhat set in my ways. :-)
