Background:
Like many on his forebears, Andras showed an interest in the arcane from what the elves of Kyonin consider a young age. Seeking to foster the boy's interest, his father Calaras took him on a pilgrimage to visit sites of great power and history at the dawn of his 90th birthday. They traveled north to Numeria to see the alien Silver Mount, at a distance of course. Andras was both awed and a little uncomfortable when they traveled to the edge of the Worldwound to see the power of the great wardstones. The trip was long and taxing but Andras was eager to see more of the world. However, it was in Ustalav, while they traveled to see Gallowspire, the fabled prison of the Whispering Tyrant that something changed.
Thus far in their travels, Calaras and his son had been treated with a measure of respect or at least mild courtesy. Not so hile traveling within the misty lands of Ustalav, here the elves were often met with a low level of hostility wherever they went. At first, Andras didn't know what to make of this prejudice. Later, after a very nearly violent confrontation with a pair of drunks at a small village tavern, Andras asked his father why the people of Ustalav seemed to so despise them? His father took time to answer but eventually explained that many of the Ustalavic people felt abandoned by the elves after the conclusion of the Shining Crusade. With Tar-Baphon defeated the crusaders returned to their homelands and the task of rebuilding was left to them alone. Initially Andras thought the Ustalavic prejudice petty, but once he saw the magic ruined wastelands of Virlych County his opinion changed dramatically. So much devastation was beyond the scope of any one country to rebuild. He thought of his time at the Worldwound, Sarkoris had the righteous Mendevian Crusaders to champion it's recovery. Ustalav had no such defenders, the knights of Lastwall should by rights have filled that need but they were more concerned with keeping the Whispering Tyrant's legacy of destruction contained within Ustalav than actually helping the country that was once their own. The young elf saw a great need for champions of Ustalav's restoration. Andras' mind remained on the broken country for the remainder of their pilgrimage. Once they returned home he began to make plans for his future. Five years later he left the forests of Kyonin once more and made his way back to Gothic Ustalav where he enrolled at the prestigious Quarterfaux Academy in Caliphas to train as a mage. Andras felt strongly that the key to undoing the damage wrought by the Whispering Tyrant's rule lie in understanding this man who had challenged Aroden himself. He dedicated his studies to uncovering the past of Tar-Baphon and the power he had wielded in both life and undeath. Upon his arrival Andras often encountered the same prejudices from the people as he had on his first visit. However he was always quick to shrug it off with a smile, for in his heart he believes the Ustalavic people have a right to their feeling of abandonment During his time at the Academy, one of his greatest mentors was the renowned Professor Lorrimor. The professor would often guest lecture at the Academy and Andras found him to be engaging and rather inspiring. For the Professor's part he was intrigued by the elf's mission to help restore the shadowy realm of Ustalav. He did what he could to aid in Andras' research of Tar-Baphon and they would often discuss the topic long into the night whenever the Professor made it to Caliphas. With Lorrimor's help, Andras' research progressed quickly despite the demands of his other studies. However, the more Andras learned of the immortal wizard the more tales of dark powers and unspeakable terrors horrified him but he knew he must persevere if his quest was ever to yield fruit. At least for the moment his research was contained to books and lectures. As Professor Lorrimor himself would attest, the greatest discoveries were usually made in the field, delving into lost reliquaries of past ages. The prospect rather filled the young elf with dread. Shortly after his official graduation from the academy, Andras was rocked by the news of Professor Lorrimor's death. He felt somewhat lost without the man's guiding presence, the knowledge he would never receive another correspondence or talk long into the night with him again. Reading the notification again he was mildly surprised to see that the professor had mentioned him in his will. He could not think what would have been important enough that he could not simply send to Andras while he was alive. Though, when he thought about it, Andras knew little of the professor's family, perhaps there were few relatives to sort through all of the work Professor Lorrimor had undoubtedly left unfinished. Regardless, he would travel to Ravengro to pay his respects and honor the man's last wishes. He owed the Professor that much after all he had done for Andras.
Personality:
Andras has a kind heart and a strong sense of empathy. But above all he considers himself a logical man. There is an answer to every puzzle and everything in creation has a story, learn these and you can understand anything. Or at least that's what he tells himself.
In truth, Andras is not the bravest of men, he clings to the belief that understanding can conquer his fears because he has no choice. He has dedicated himself to the mysteries of one of the most terrifying beings to ever walk the mortal plane and without the belief that finding answers will quell his worries he would never be able to push himself to continue.
Appearance:
Andras stands about six feet tall, he has the slim build of both his elven heritage and the scholar's life. His features are narrow and angular but his soft violet eyes give him an air of compassion. He wears his silver hair shoulder length, partially gathered at the nape of his neck with a small silver clip. He wears simple trousers and a mid-length coat with a high collar, all in dark colors after Ustalavic fashion. Andras appears well maintained but usually rumpled and the smell of old books seems to perpetually linger around him. A black raven with unusually keen eyes is often seen perched on his shoulder. |
