Sam sighs and says, "Let me start at the beginning. Fenella Bromathan lead this expedition here three days ago. I am - well, was - her apprentice, so it was only natural that I go. The first two days were okay, I guess. There wasn't a lot of noqual around given the nubmer of craters. Originally we thought it was because other prospectors got to them before we did, but now," Sam pauses a moment with a shudder as she unlocks the door to the stairs. She continues talking as she begins to climb.

"There were twelve of us, and now only five remain alive. Out of those five, two have been wounded heavily and we struggle to rouse them. Fenella was the first to die during the first attack. The monsters that attacked as magic-resistant and deadly; we were torn apart and only survived by retreating here and barricading ourselves in. We could do little more than watch our dead friends rise as zombies and shamble off into the woods to do Cayden knows what."

"I've taken control of this operation ever since Fenella died. I've been trying to summon help by setting off spells like fireworks. When the dwarves came by yesterday, I thought that we were saved, but the dwarves refused to come into the town. The monsters took the time to ambush in the woods, and they were slaughtered."

"Then we saw your boat; I tried to signal you, and I hope that's why you came. We have wounded nearby. I was tending them when I saw you. Please, we need help. I saw some of those monsters amassing in the woods, and I think they're about to attack again. Please, we need to get off this island and save as many of my companions as possible. And, no, we haven't been bitten. We won't turn into those foul tongued creatures. Oh, please help us. We need a ship to get us out of here."

She opens the door into the final level before the roof. Two women lay unconscious on reed mats on the floor while two men tend to their wounds. They look at Samaritha nervously as she enters.

The day is fairly nice, but as you move around the Gold Goblin, Samaritha is looking shocked as a purple mist covers her. She casts a spell, and more mist floats away from her as the magic cleans a nearby table.

Seeing Nel and Vara, she anxiously asks them, "Do you know what is going on? All my spells giving off this mist. They're working normally, I think..." She bends over an examines the wood table. "Yeah, it's clean. I don't know what's going on!"

Perception DC 20:
The purple mist seems to be floating up and towards the Blot.

Spellcraft 15:
The spell is prestidigitation.

"I do not have any particular training in performance, Varknarnost, so I do not believe that I will be best suited for such an act. Nor does it seem relevant to my training," Sam says as she flashes a smile. "I study transmutation magic. And, Mazra from Sandpoint, as far as your question - no, I was not casting a spell, though I wonder what sort of magic would cause such an effect. Surely it's more powerful than anything I could do? It seems like there was a powerful magnetic force that hovered over the city!"

Mazra senses that she is telling the truth, though she is starting to get a bit irate at the repeated accusations.

"Well," Samaritha says with a nervous smile, "I was looking at these coins and bits and bobs as they were floating, and they all seemed to be moving - very slowly - towards the Blot. I wouldn't count that out so fast, especially since no one knows much about it."

"Again, my name's Samaritha. I'm not a cyphermage - well, at least not yet. I came into town yesterday and I'm looking for someone to take me on. And, uh," Sam seems to concentrate for a second, "I'm not quite sure what a bridge monkey is. But, as for why I'm at the Gold Goblin - well, I haven't found a cyphermage that's hiring yet, so I'm looking for work. Perhaps you have a library needing tending or accounts to be done?"

Samaritha begins casually backing away, trying to avoid Tamiro's attention.

The woman holds her hands up in front of her in a sign of surrender and says, "I think we got off on the wrong foot here. I wasn't casting a spell - I was looking at that coin floating there," she gestures with a quick nod of the head. "I'm new to Riddleport - came in looking to be a cyphermage's apprentice. What reason would I have to do this to your," she pauses to glance over the room before continuing, "fine establishment? My name's Samaritha Beldusk, or just Sam if you'd be so kind as to get those swords out of my face. "

The woman starts up, blinking, "I'm not doing this - I can't figure what it is." She presses down on one of the floating coins. "I'm new to this city, though. Does this happen often?"
