Not sure who says what around whom, so playing as had short conversation as group before we split up...

Roedar adds, "My quick examination did not reveal anything physically wrong. Everything seemed normal and in the right place, if you will. Magic seems the most likely possibility. Those behind this must have serious secrets to go to such lengths to prevent a simple interview." He looks around a little nervously. "This must be given serious consideration at the highest levels."

Seeing the auto-disarming display by Spiegel, Roedar smiles, "I admire a man prepared for any eventuality! I think it is time for some relaxing talk over a beer! Anyone have a favorite watering hole in these parts?"

Kn (local): 1d20 + 8 + 1d6 ⇒ (19) + 8 + (3) = 30 To know a good bar nearby if no one suggests any. Hey! With that check, maybe I even know of one that gives free drinks to officers! Perhaps a free first drink!?

Sensing that She's question is just a bit of awkwardness combined with Roedar's paranoia, Roedar relaxes and responds to She's comments, "Yes, we must proceed deliberately and carefully... After a round of drinks! I'm heading out for a bit of relaxation. Care to join?"

Roedar takes a look for Spiegel Stillwater to extend a similar invitation to him. Finding him absent, he asks at the front desk if any saw him depart or knew where he might be.

Assuming he is able to locate Stillwater

Roedar approaches Spiegel and invites him out for a drink, "Heading out for a drink. Join us! It's been quite the day, and I think we could stand to lose the edge."

If cannot locate...

Roedar heads to the bar, hopefully with officer She.

Roedar squeaks in surprise at She's question. "Sensitive? Surprisingly harsh," he thinks. "Why absolutely nothing! That's why I prefaced it with a request for you to help me."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23 based on roll, if She is willing to divulge motive/emotion behind question

Roedar turns to Amelia and lowers his voice. "Ahh, that makes sense. This is not widely known, but apparently, the gang provocateurs are using musical instruments with the mark of Pitax. This may be very sensitive..." Returning his voice to normal, "Perhaps a drink with Spielgel is just what I need. Thank you for your help, Ms. Rolshen."

Roedar will do some research on banjos in Pitax and see if they are favored by any particular group.

This is still Roedar's first day. He certainly came in on a good one!

I'm playing this as Elbin's interview began before Spindleshank's (Elbin was already there, Spindleshank had to be brought up from detention, or something), so Elbin's was concluded prior to the events with Spindleshank.

Hearing Alan's cry for help and seeing him immediately hurry into the interview room, Roedar follows. He is quite surprised to see Amelia bloody her lip and kiss the struggling Spindleshank. The oddity of the situation sets him to chattering, but he is impressed by her resourcefulness. "If it works, it works!" he thinks and makes a quick check to see how the patient is doing.

Heal: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25

"Get him up on the table. Make him comfortable and give him some air!" Roedar rolls up his cloak and puts it beneath Spindleshank's head, checking his pulse and the dilation of his eyes.

Assuming he hears the talk of magic assassination...

Roedar makes a note to pull Wheeler's and Spindleshank's files to better understand who these people are. Clearly not common members of a common gang.

When the excitement dies down, Roedar reflects, "It certainly is nice to be surrounded by such competent people. Maybe we can really make a difference. Speaking of..."

"Were it not for the interview moratorium, I would offer to assist in any further questioning, but you seem to handle it quite well. However, perhaps you could help me out. Are any of you involved with or knowledgeable in music? Ever hear of a banjo maker named Pitax?"

Male Human Cleric 1 (FC) / Monk 1 / Investigator 1 | HP 33/33 | AC 19, T 17, FF 17 | F/R/W 7/7/12 | CMD 16 | Init 4 | P 16, SM 14

Assuming that while in an interrogation room, Roedar would not be aware of what is going on in another interrogation room...

Kn (local): 1d20 + 8 + 1d6 ⇒ (7) + 8 + (4) = 19 Recognize Pitax? Also, is banjo common to a particular group or people?

Starting prior to entering the interrogation room...
Roedar gets a couple treats for Spot and a cup of water for Elbin before making his way to the room. Before entering, he discretely casts Enhanced Diplomacy. Once inside, he presents the water and treats to Elbin and Spot saying, "I'm glad you both made it back here safely. Wasn't sure what was going to happen back there for a little bit." Roedar pulls up a chair and motions to Milo to do the same. "This is Milo, an associate of mine. We need to see how you're doing and find out what is going on down at the docks."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 + 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 + (6) + 2 = 20 Diplomacy + Inspiration + Enhanced Diplomacy
Maybe an additional assist from Milo? Assuming his attitude is at least friendly, trying to boost it to helpful.

"What do you know about this bard that's stirring up trouble?"

After Elbin speaks...

Roedar listens as Elbin speaks. "That is something. Two bards, not just one. Maybe siblings? Or twins? Hmm..." He pauses, making a couple chattering sounds while in thought. "Are the bards always together? Ever work separately? Someone's sending them in... Who's behind them?" Having just heard the latest reports from the meeting, Roedar thinks, "Fagen? Is he behind the bards? Someone is trying to move in on the docks..." "How old do these bards look?"

Ater Elbin is done speaking about the bards, Roedar continues, "What about the drugs? Do you know where they're coming from? Are the bards connected to that?"

EDIT: The above was my plan, unless it is interrupted by Alan...

Roedar snaps to attention when Lt. Callahan finishes speaking, "Yes, Ma'am." He sits down and waits for the meeting to adjourn. Returning to his desk, he grabs the report he just wrote and looks for Milo.

"Here is what happened out on the docks," he says, presenting the report to Milo. "One thing, though, Murtaugh says that Elbin is quite smart, and I believe him." He pauses, sniffs the air, and says in lowered voice, "His dog is, too. Don't say anything in front of Spot that you don't want Elbin or anyone else to know." In his normal voice, he continues, "Let me know what questions you have, but I think Elbin wants to help us. I say we ask him what we want to know, maybe we can get him to let us cast a truth telling spell, just so he'll know we won't have any cause to distrust him."

Are there any rules about using spells during interrogation, even when acceded to by the interrogee?

Recommendations?"

Roedar rises and stands at ease. "Lt. Callahan. I agree with She and Ms. Rolshen. We should question the current detainees before venturing out on another mission. Let's interview the detainees and witnesses; then we can go investigate the tea shop. If that turns out to be a dead end, we can backtrack and get the big cheese, Fagen."

Roedar scurries over to Sven's desk, "You're writing a report already? We still have to question them!" He bounds around Sven, peering over his shoulder, and trying to get a look at his report, but then he pauses, "I guess we should let the department know what happened. I'll write mine up, too, and meet you back here to go question Elbin and Spot."

Before heading back to his desk, Roedar finds Murtaugh, "You know Elbin best. What do you think he has in mind when he talks about 'protection'? Hey! Sven and I are going to question Elbin when we're done with the reports. Join us!"

Roedar returns to his desk and begins his report:

Murtaugh, Tackleberry, Mahooney, Sven, and I proceeded to the docks to meet with Elbin, Murtaugh's contact. Our intent was to simply speak with Elbin and get information about the bard that supposedly has been spreading rumors to weaken the existing gangs. However, while making introductions, we were set upon by an organized group assaulting us from 2 directions. Murtaugh, Elbin (with his dog Spot), and I took shelter in a basement that Hightower opened up for us. Tackleberry, Hightower, and Sven fought the group, knocking out several, which we arrested and brought here. They are former members of the Watch Guard and need to be questioned. They appear to be the new gang taking advantage of the weakening of the existing gangs.

The fight with the 2 groups posed a danger to Elbin, so I offered him our protection during the fight by having him join us in the basement. He ran out through the back of the basement and came to the station. Because of the altercation, we were unable to question Elbin at the docks. He did inform us that there is a new drug that strengthens those who take it, making them much more dangerous. We need to find out more about this drug and what involvement the bard has in all of this.

Summary:
* Bard involvement is still unknown
* New gang consists of former Watch Guard members
* There is a new drug on the docks, strengthening those who take it. Need specifics on suppliers and users
* Need to question Elbin re gangs, drugs, and bard
* Need to question former Watch Guard members re new gang

"What a fine report!" Roedar thinks to himself. "Time to go a-questioning," and he ambles over to Sven's desk.

Roedar listens to Sven while running his finger along his moustache. "I'm new to this, but it does surprise me. Hoooweeeverrrr," he says exaggeratedly, "They really did not put up much of a fight. We better nip this 'gang' in the bud while they're still new and weak. Let's get a room and find out what Elbin knows." "And maybe his dog, Spot," he thinks.

He scans the room for Murtaugh, "Hey! Murtaugh!" The slight squeak is almost lost in the volume of his shout. "Let's get a room and talk to Elbin. He wants protection; we did that. Let's get information!" Roedar turns back to Sven, "Come on, Sven. Meet you in the interrogation room with Elbin and Spot."

Ruh-roh... Lol. Roedar might take some heat for this one. Roedar was thinking about protection during the fight, not some kind of long-term arrangement. Have to talk to Elbin and what exactly he wants and what he can give us on the gangs.

Upon hearing Elbin asking for protection, Roedar talks to Murtaugh and Sven, "Let's get an interrogation room and see exactly what Elbin knows and wants. He's been on the docks for years, right? Is he really in serious danger? We protected him in the fight, but sounds like he wants more. Hope he knows a lot about these gangs and that bard..."

Is it a formality that we escape? Or do we want to play it out? Ideally, Roedar would like to get more from Elbin about the bard after we're out of danger. Before meeting Elbin

Once we arrive at Elbins' general location, Roedar says, "Hold up just one minute." He then opens the top of his pack and pulls out a small box with some small holes in it. From within, the faint sound of claws on wood can be heard. Roedar seems to be extra careful in handling it, all the while making low, comforting chattering sounds. He carefully sets the box down near the edge of a warehouse, opens the top, and slowly starts to tilt it. He reaches in; almost immediately 3 rats scurry out and into the shadows of the building. Roedar whispers, almost inaudibly, "Be careful. I'll be back later."

He stands up, looks around gauging any reactions, saying, "They can take care of themselves, now. It was time for them to go." He packs up the box, "Let's carry on."

Roedar looks at Elbin, noting his dress and its condition, hoping to spot anything that my indicate his recent activities or locations. "You're right, we don't want to fight," Roedar begins, "We just want to talk. Nice pet there. Looks like you take real good care of him. I'm a pet lover myself." I can then bless him with the truth of Abadar, and Murtaugh, you can put him at ease. Did you bring any of the food or fireworks he likes?"

"And you say he has a pet rodent. Interesting..."

Team Waterfront:

"Hey, everyone. Mind if we stop by my place and pick up something?" Roedar asks with a little apprehension (even his moustache seems to twitch a little). "It may be useful."

Once at his place, he leaves his partners outside while he quickly retrieves the 3 small rats he's been raising and training. He places them in a small container with airholes and secrets it in the top of his backpack.

"Thanks, I'm ready. Let's keep going."

Team Waterfront:

When the team is assembled, Roedar proposes, "How about a plan of attack? Tackleberry, you like being a lookout, keeping us safe? As you were saying, Murtaugh, we need to talk directly with your contact. You can make introductions; I can see that he tells the truth. If Sven or Hightower can be in on the conversation, they can help convince him to not waste our time."

"Also, I should warn you, just in case something comes up. When I get overly excited, I stop talking. I mean..." Roedar pauses. "I mean, I lose the ability to talk." Roedar looks around uncomfortably at nothing and everything except those he is addressing. In a quiet voice, "I actually can only make rat-like sounds." He pauses once more, gathering himself as he now looks directly at the group. "Just thought you should know..."

"Anyway, Murtaugh, is there anything you can tell us about your contact that might make a difference going in? Have any friends? Peculiarities?"

@GM_Solspiral, can we select spells specifically for this mission? Or do we need to go with our default list? I pray for my spells in the morning, but I could always leave one or more slots empty and adjust according to the duties we are assigned by the department.

"I can only stand in front of ye when the enemy comes from just one direction. Keep that in mind."

During the extended handshake, Roedar's face turns serious, "Good point. I'll be wary." Once his hand has been returned, Roedar shakes it out, muttering, "Nice grip."

He gives Sven one more look and scurries off to find Murtaugh and learn some more about that snitch.

Will post later for interaction with Murtaugh.

Roedar makes a mental note to learn more about the team. If he has direct access to their records, he will get them himself; otherwise, he makes a request for their files to find out more about their capabilities, how they work together, etc.

He also looks for any information the department has on bards. He does this for bards in general and on individual bards that may have been encountered before, especially if they are associated with the dock gangs or the waterfront.

Roedar walks up to Sven. "Glad you're joining us. I hear you're one for using your head. I am, too. Just hopefully not in the same way!" Roedar chuckles.

Sven wrote:
"I'll go with the lot of ye to the waterfront. Somethiing tells me that we might need a solid shield down there."

"Your shield will be appreciated. Appreciated most when placed between myself and them! (whomever them are, I don't discriminate). Here's to being a great team," and Roedar extends his hand for a shake.

"This is my first day. Have you had much chance to work with the others in our group?

Roedar glances over at Spiegel. He doesn't understand what was said, but to hear Spiegel talking to himself like that makes him think, "Does he talk to the rats, too?"

We Abadaran's tend to stick out.

Roedar sniggers to himself, allowing only the slightest squeal to escape. Sure, when you walk around in blindingly polished full plate toting a supersized hammer, sticking out is all you can do. I don't think the silver key has anything to do with it.

Roedar regains his composure and gives the lieutenant his full attention.

Amelia wrote:
Amelia's face shows nothing but a sincere desire to see justice done even under Roedar's careful observation, as do the words she speaks. Her voice is even and sure, and her manners betray nothing but earnestness, with no sign of the behaviors that normally accompany someone dissembling or attempting deception.

Roedar relaxes just a bit and feels a little more at ease. "Perhaps this is just what I've been looking for, a place where I can make a tangible difference without having to question the motivations of everyone around me."

Joke:
But can you really trust someone who uses the word "dissemble" so comfortably?

If the murder case and the gang interrogation are under control, I'd be happy to start investigating the bard provocateur. Setting the gangs against each other to create an opening is very clever. I'm sure he's not doing this on his own.

Is retraining allowed in this campaign? I put some retrained HP on Roedar's profile, so I need to take them off (and use the funds elsewhere) if it is not.

I'll take a break on the questions after this...

Roedar surveys Amelia and Spiegel. He tries to get a feel for the sincerity of Amelia's statements regarding the killings.

Sincerity:

Can Sense Motive and such be used on other PCs?
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (10) + 16 = 26

He then speaks up, I believe the changes in the relative power and hierarchy of the dock gangs are more dangerous long term, but the killings dramatically undermine the faith our fellow citizens have in the city.

The killings really must be stopped immediately, he thinks to himself.

Roedar shows up right on time for his first day as a Cadet. When he sees that Lieutenant Callahan has a free moment, he approaches and reports himself as ready for duty.

Do we refer to all superiors as "Sir"? Or do we also use "Ma'am"?

Lieutenant Callahan, Roedar begins as his voice breaks with a slight squeak. I am pleased to be a member of the Watch Guard. Do I have a desk where I can spread out and get to work? I am particularly interested in determining the source of the leaked letter. The leaker is obviously just trying to sow dissension. But the string of recent murders is very troubling. Any priorities?

Settle down, Roedar. You're just showing up for a new job. Nothing too stressful, here.

Roedar is clearly excited to be starting and wants to make a good first impression. He also seems legitimately interested in the work, an impression reinforced by the golden key hanging from around his neck.

Thanks for the info. I have not played in the Golarion setting, so I lack context for many of those things. I'll try to look them up before bombarding you with questions.

ahh, ok. I was hoping the knowledge checks in general could be researched in the library. To the streets, then!

Do investigator cadets have any access to the library? Perhaps with supervision?

@GM_Solspiral, I'm guessing these are common knowledge questions, but

  • What are the Stolen lands?
  • Did Woodhaven exist prior to the split of Brevoy? Or is it the product of the 4 unified kingdoms?

If not common knowledge, then
Kn (Local): 1d20 + 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (14) + (2) + 8 = 24

Thanks!

Roedar will provide support and, hopefully, help prepare us for battle and catching the bad guys. He is interested in researching those who abuse their power over others and bringing them to justice.

He also has a certain affinity for rats, even sounding like one when fighting.

Here's to Roedar meshing well and lots of enjoyment!
