Wow... I've had a kid in hospital for an infection. It's scary and awful - One of the worst experiences of my life. I'm glad to hear he's on the mend!

Reuben obviously panics as the bandit runs for him. Desperately he points with the crossbow and fires, the bolt sliding slightly as he does - blocking the mechanism and jamming the crossbow.

His left hand comes up, he speaks a tongue-twisting word and a dazzling jet of blue-green fire, fifteen feet long and just as wide, races to roast the unfortunate bandit

"I'm so sorry!" he called out as he released his spell.

mechanics:

Whole crossbow thing is just flavour. Time to reveal he's actually not a complete dead weight!

Not sure if the bandit will save. If he does, Reuben will move away (closer to one of the others) - I mean, wouldn't you?

Leaping out from his ambush point, Reuben simply drops off the wall, bouncing back into the door and slamming it shut with his weight. As he pushes the door shut he snarls and points his crossbow.

It's obvious that for all his bravado the young man has never been in combat before. It's a miracle he hasn't frozen up entirely.

Not complaining, but when I had the same problem I just photo'd it with my phone and uploaded to google docs.
SO inefficient it makes the programmer in me annoyed, but it makes the jury-rigger in me happy.

Reuben has spent so many hours reading on the roof while hiding from his parents that he has it down to an artform. His cloak, reversed to brown, blends in with the wood, and his position near a barrel disguises his silhouette.

Not being able to repair them is fine - there's only a day or so. On a nat 20 with spells and masterwork tools he'd get 35*DC, so probably at best 105gp towards building/repairing one IN A WEEK!

Should we attack and not catch them all, we can rest assured that the entire force will descend on this trading post and kill all herein. This is, literally, do or die. Saving for the future would be a false economy at best."

Reuben grinds his teeth and does his best to assume the role Sverlisk has forced on him. Following the lead of his 'teacher' he takes out his sketch book and scrivener's kit and starts sharpening another quill in case Sverlisk should need it. He also retrieves his simple map in case it becomes necessary to mark positions.
"Ready Master Esskr." he confirms.

Okay, I was reflavouring bastard as 'removed from inheritance' rather than truly illegitimate. I figure all the nobles still don't take him seriously, and he has a drive to prove himself.
I can change it for noble born - Garess, but I didn't want to double up with Cainbar.

Reuben's blush deepened during Sverlisk's song, the flush clearly evident in pale skin that barely saw the sun. After a single hurt look at Sverlisk, Reuben studiously avoided anyone's eyes.

Reuben reaches into a satchel and draws a large, heavy, white-leather bound book. Opening it reveals well-thumbed pages with tiny writing and drawings clustered haphazardly on each page. A moment later and a scrivener's kit thumps onto the table, quickly revealing a quill and ransacked for a stick of artist's charcoal.
"I hope you don't mind, I'd like to capture the scene for my book - at least in rough." Without waiting for an answer, Reuben begins to sketch.

Reuben gives Sverlisk a hurt look as he does his best to mop his clothes with his handkerchief. "I'm seventeen. In Irrisen they'd already be shopping me around on the marriage market.I'm not a kid anymore. The small square of cloth is clearly insufficient, and soon as he has wet clothes and a soggy hankie.

Giving up he addresses the man he's marked down as 'mysterious stranger number 1'. [b]"I've got a map here" he offers. "Well, up in my room. It's not very good, though I suppose if there were good maps then they wouldn't need us to make them. Did you want to go up and see it?" "very basic maps showing major landmarks" comes as part of his survival kit

"So" he says loudly, with a glint in his eye, waiting until Sverlisk has raised his glass to his lips "Whores!" he nods knowingly "Given how long we'll be out in the wilderness, can I assume you'll be busy tonight, Master Lisstr?"

It still sort of works, though. I could do illegitimate if needed.
Reuben, cornered by Sverlisk, nodded thoughtfully "I see. Certainly Master Lisstr. I will go by my patronymic then. Reuben Kseniya" he bows politely "At your service."

Reuben looks around the pub intently as he puzzles out the location of everything, then wanders over to the bargolem.

"Fascinating work." he mutters, his eyes playing over the golem's chassis. He repeats the order verbatim, adding "And a mead for me as well. Honey if you have it, spiced if you don't. Additionally I will require a room for three. If you can give me the key I will take up our possesions and return for the food."

Once bekeyed, Reuben loads himself down with all the miscellaneous gear that requires storage. It takes a little time to work out how to hold everything, and in the end he holds his butterfly net in his teeth lest it break under the weight. Loaded down like a pack mule he carefully navigates the door looking for a matching number. He happily dumps all of the gear on the beds, locks up and returns.

The food and drinks are ready, placed on an enormous wooden tray. Carefully steadying the precarious platter he manoeuvres through the room to the table, finally plonking the tray down and grabbing his mead.

"Hail and well met, fellows." he calls out cheerily as he sits "I am Reuben Kseniya. I don't believe we've met. Are you our new companions in this grand adventure?"

A troubled thought strikes him "I only acquired a room for three. Do you have a room already?"

Alright - I've got the workings for the character laid out in long form in the alias, if anyone wants to comment. (I've also included a link to the google doc that underlies it)
I haven't picked spells yet - very keen not to overlap with other casters so we can all have our niches.
I have bought an ox and cart for the backstory. Hopefully it'll be useful for lugging back the enormous mounds of treasure we find. I suspect the Ox will be more useful than the cart itself.
Once it's finalised I'll put it into the standard stat block. I find it is much easier for people to understand where everything is coming from when it is laid out long-form.

What's the plan with healing. I assume we'll eventually go for a wand of CLW. What is the plan for the first couple of levels though? Is anyone taking Heal? Does Sverlisk have CLW?

Are there any knowledges people would like to stake out, and I'll try to keep Reuben out of them?
