Backstory:
Rethe spent much of his youth training to be a hunter for his tribe, with the ideal of being a great warrior, and when he finally came of age to join his first hunt, he was ecstatic. He followed the older warriors, prowling through the trees in search of a suitable prize, only to stumble into the territory of a rhinoceros, which quickly rushed him.

The catfolk had not even a moment to prepare himself before he was impaled and tossed aside to bleed out. The commotion drew the rest of the hunters, who succeeded in bringing down the beast, but Rethe was already in dire condition.

Though he was rushed back to tribe grounds to receive treatment, his heart fully stopped for several minutes, much longer than any common treatment could repair. Without warning however, he suddenly gasped a deep breath, returning to life and prompting continued treatment. He spent the next few days comatose and hovering on the border of life and death.

When he finally woke, he was changed. His fur was as black as a moonless night, and he seemed more undead than living, only barely radiating body heat and with little more than the faintest of pulses. In addition, dark spirits seemed to plague him, whether it was with whispers in his ears or strange occurrences around him.

However, beyond the vile entities that haunted him, he also found the voices of benign spirits long past, ancient and proud warriors whose blood he shared. Now with the knowledge of who his ancestors were, he renewed his dedication to be a great warrior, of the same caliber as the line from which he was descended.

Personality:
Rethe has a friendly personality, but his experience with death has changed it somewhat. He can remember nothing of the short time he spent dead, and he broods on it, wondering what the afterlife holds. The spirits that follow him, both good and ill, leave him even more curious and contemplative as to the nature of the soul after death.

Because of this, he tries to do good, to be more like the ancestors who aid him, rather than the evil spirits that plague him. In this way, he hopes that after death he might find himself among the ranks of the proud souls who've gone before him, and not as that of some miserable creature with regret or envy of the living.

Appearance:
Rethe is quite distinct from the average catfolk. Contrary to the usual coloration of his kind, his fur is mostly a deep and solid black. The only exception to this is an irregular circle about 3 or 4 inches in diameter on his abdomen, where the fur is instead gray, with a matching though smaller mark on his back - the spot where he was so heavily injured years ago. It is usually unnoticeable though, as Rethe tends to keep it covered with clothing.

He is somewhat muscular, though not extremely so, and is a bit light on his feet, as most catfolk tend to be. However, while he moves around normally in most cases, there are still some other oddities about him. His life force often seems faint, with his heartbeat nearly imperceptible, and his body rarely ever generates as much heat as a living person should. His fur tends to grow quite slowly as well, making it look generally older and more ragged than normal. The combination of all this gives him the smallest air of an undead, though close inspection does show him to still be alive.
