"Rabbit makes a tasty stew." someone whispers in Jewel's ear.
Remy is at a loss what to do with all those herbs. "I love those powdered spices. These different kinds of grass look interesting, but I don't know most of them. As for how to cut them - small if you want to leave them in, or not at all if you want to take them out again after cooking. Take a bite. If you don't want that felling in your mouth, then take it out at the end."
Jewel feels a pulling at her clothes. And a whispered "Why ask her, I got that covered."
"So it is good that Plugg is dead." Rémy concludes. "This ship has rats to, but they are all of the garbage eating kind with no ambition to change that. It is frustrating." he sighs. "What's in Annesley?" Rémy inquires with a sudden excitement.
Rémy appears out of a dark gap. "Who is Mr. Plugg?"
"C'est bon." Rémy comments as he tries the meal Jewel prepared, while no one is in the kitchen.
"Sounds interesting. I'll take one serving." Rémy replies.
"The sides sound good. But what's the point in glazing the tuna in starch sauce before roasting?" Rémy inquires.
"C'est merde!" Rémy calls out and kicks a sack of grain. "They have nothing to add a fine note of this or that taste to it. Only salt, some pepper and cheap oil. This is no fun."
Rémy shrugs. "I've never tried that."
"Is water wet?" Rémy asks when offered to go to the kitchen. He hides in her shawl.
"We're lacking important ingredients for both! Have you seen lemon, or olive oil?" Rémy inquires. "Worst case we can just salt and pepper the steaks and grill them, mais serait très dommage." "Sushi is small snacks with raw fish prepared with cooked rice and different sauces. Nothing for the crew. That would be pearls before swine. But we could try to make it just for us." Rémy lectures while bustling over the top of the crates and barrels, searching for things to use. "Grilled vegetables sounds good. But but you need a good oil there too. Or you only blacken it."
"Mon dieu, non!" Rémy protests. "You have a whole tuna fish and you want to put it into soup?" "You could do steaks, or sushi, but soup? How bis is the fish?"
"Nah. They are just garbage gluttons. being a food connoisseur as a rat is really hard. No one understands me. Not even my closest family."
Rémy gives some advice here and there and scurries around the caboose in search of spices. But the only 'spices' seem to be liquid ones, that Fishguts uses to spice himself. Seeing Jewel handle the kitchen Rémy is impressed. He lets her do it and only reminds her of stirring now and then. Once the stew simmered for an hour he asks to try the stew. "C'est haute cuisine! You cook really well."
"Fishguts is always drunk." Rémy replies. "Hiding form him will be easy enough."
"You get to use the kitchen? Tres bien! Let's do that together, I can help." Rémy states jumping with joy. Not waiting for an answer he moves through the supplies. "We're limited with the available food, and we have almost nothing fresh, but something with beans would work. If you take those fire beans here, and some of the green beans there, and potatoes, that would get us a nice stew. As a base I suggest adding a big bone from a cow and and some smoked bacon to add some meat and more taste." "It could use some parsley or a hot pepper, but I haven't seen any spices or herbs, only salt. Maybe in the kitchen?"
"Sqeak, squeak, squeeaak?" Rémy inquires when he sees Jewel collecting food.
"Non, non, don't tell anyone. It needs to be our secret." "I need to go now. I'll come back sometime." The rat lowers to all four and runs off disappearing in a dark corner.
"No, no," Remy objects. "the cook of the ship is horrible. I want to cook. Use the kitchen - caboose - ship kitchen."
"You can speak? Tres bien. C'est un plaisir. Je suis Rémy. The leader of the nest - as you call it - is my father Django. This is my brother Émile. If you ask what my father wants the answer is food. But that is given aplenty here." "That the humans come and hunt us is something we could need help with, obviously, but you are in a trap already so you can't help. What did you do, that humans trapped you? Ça ne fait rien." "But what I would really like is use the caboose. I'm sick of eating raw meat, chew uncooked corn. I want some food that kisses my taste buds." |
