I'm here

Team, I'm not sure we can beat this thing. If it's a full-blown vampire (not a vampire spawn), then it has DR 10, Fast Heal 5, and it will eventually make it's Will save against the mirror. Then one of us is going to die.

We're 2 HD, and this thing deals 2 Negative Levels per hit. And it's a Monk.

We might want to consider retreating back upstairs.

Another burst of energy washed out of the black-clad warrior. He kept just out of the vampire's reach. keeping next to the mirror, 10 feet away from the vamp.

Rebuke Spirits (channel positive to harm undead): 1d6 ⇒ 2 DC 15 Will save for half.

Grey reached out and gently touched the vampire.

Touch Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Hmm. Hopefully with all it's various penalties right now that will hit.

If it hits, the Vampire is Staggered for 4 rounds (no save, Gentle Rest blessing power

Then a burst of energy washed out from the masked warrior.

So it is prone, currently Grappling Kaillum, and Flat Footed to me (since I'm acting before it in initiative)? Is that correct?

Hungry Creature That Sleeps in a Coffin sounds pretty undead to me, so I'm going to be starting off combat now.

Grey stepped in and brought his scythe down onto the creature grabbing Callum.

Should I make the rolls now, or wait for initiative?

Once again this challenge was not well suited to Grey's strengths. While the others addressed sources of fire or cold, Grey began looking for alternate routes.

Grey is hooded, masked, and not an inch of skin is exposed. He's clearly large and visibly masculine, but there's nothing beyond that to identify him as an orc.

The broad figure was not the largest in the group, but his presence loomed. He was clad in grey from head to toe. Even his face was hidden behind a featureless grey mask. It bore no eye or mouth holes. It was flat and seemed to swirl within like fog or smoke.

He stood in relaxed stillness, the mask making it impossible to tell where he was looking. A scythe rested gently on his shoulder. He turned his head, scanning the room and the others. "Perhaps." he rumbled. His voice was deep and resonant, but muffled behind the mask.

"I am called Grey. Do you know where you are?"

For clarity, Grey is wearing something like one of these.

Grey's former life is something I need to understand better. He was a psychopomp. Any kind in particular? Psychopomps are outsiders and don't have souls separate from their bodies. So I'm wondering how we was turned into an undead?

Outsiders that are Called rather than Summoned leave behind corpses, and can become undead. [oo]Or, if you'd prefer he could have been Dominated or unwillingly Bound to service by the Goat Priests. It amounts to the same thing, but undead hits closest to home for him.[/ooc]

As for being reincarnated.... I didn't know that. I think I have a way for both these things to work though.

Native Outsiders can be reincarnated and turned into Undead. Soooo, obviously that means that Grey used to be a psychopomp that is Native to wherever this place is.

I'm not sure if that works with your cosmology, but if it does, problem solved!

Grey could be from Golarion. His patron god would probably be someone like Anubis (or anotehr neutral death god). So, if he's from Golarion it's probably Ossirion.

That said, his backstory involves already having been in Rappan Athuk before, so he might actually be from wherever we are now.

I love the idea of stealth synergy in this game. Running around like a special forces team ambushing everyone sounds like a blast.

That said, I'm a guy in Platemail with a 10 dex who doesn't have Stealth as a class skill. I'm not subtle. Stealth is not really an option for me until next level at the earliest.

I wonder if everyone would be willing to share what their envisioned party role is?

I'm just about the tankiest tank to ever tank, and I work as an HP battery for the rest of the group. Allies near me will have a much harder time getting themselves killed.

Grey is a Necromancy-themed healer/tank. The long term goal is to be able to Channel Positive and Negative Energy at the same time, healing allies and harming enemies with the same burst. He steals enemy life force and gives it to allies.

Also, Undead minions. Those will be happening at some point too.

Think of Grey like Arthas. Hard to hurt, near-impossible to kill, and anyone who dies near him gets up to join his army.

Reporting in!

Should we work out our own background connections to other characters, or will that happen in-game?

crossing my fingers

All done! Grey became a bit more tanky as I fleshed him out. Between temporary HP, self-healing and his Bodyguard familiar, he's going to be awfully hard to kill, and once he gets Life Link at 3rd level he'll be an impressive Hit Point battery for the party. He doesn't hit super hard, but he makes one heck of a doorstop.

Doomed Hero here. Wanted to get my submission in before the deadline ended.

Here's Grey, healer and support caster extraordinaire. He's a straightforward, no-nonsense sort who's priorities are keeping his allies alive and making the enemies dead (in that order).

He has a huge vendetta against the Goat Priests of Rappan Athuk, so when they start to show up his priorities might be tested.

Grey was originally from a long-running Rappan Athuk game, so I'm familiar with some of it. I'd like to keep part of that backstory. I'm thinking that Grey has been delving into Rappan Athuk with various groups for a while now, but they keep either running away or dying. He's hoping to find a band of true professionals to team up with.

Mechanically, he's a Warpriest/Shaman with a splash of Spheres of Might for some extra combat versatility. He's focused on channel-healing at the moment, but as he grows in power he'll learn more about the negative energy side of channeling and use it to harm enemies and take control of the undead. Eventually he'll be taking levels in the Envoy of Balance prestige class.

This character is very team-focused and should work well in any group. He's designed to be versatile, and can easily fill the tank, healer, or support caster roles.

I still have spells to pick and some sphere-related stuff to work out, but the majority of the character is complete.

Momentarily hopeful about finding his people, his heart hardened again when he saw their trappings. This place was rife with the blasphemies of Orcus, and only getting worse as they descended.

Suddenly the witch doctor was thrilled at the idea of slaughtering his kinsmen. Getting rid of them would reduce the numbers of Orcs taken in by diabolism and cultish lies.

He moved in behind Brok and readied himself for a fight.
