Anybody else like the idea of taking stealth synergy and lookout? We could really have some fun with a few party members doing that.

I'm all for taking the teamwork feats if others are going to so we get the major benefit. I actually took a archtype that got rid of the built in hunter teamwork feats because they are usually just wasted when it is only me and my pet getting them. Stealth Synergy and Lookout are both fun ones to take.

I could be down for those (and even other teamwork feats depending on what my build looks like over time.) Stealth is something I'm built for, and lookout is great if we stick close together for the most part.

I forgot about one part of the feat rules, which I will explain here.

Automatic feat upgrades For upgrade feats that don't have extra prerequisites such as spell focus or drow nobility, you gain the upgraded feat at your next level when you gain another regular feat. Eg. Take Drow Nobility at level 1, at level 2 when you get another feat, say quickdraw, your drown nobility upgrades to its improved version, and its greater version at level 3. Simply, you can't get free upgraded feats on the same level that you took the base feat.

@Ioganic Crossblooded and Wildblooded are fine working together. I allow wildblooded and mutations to work with the eldritch heritage feat too.

@Nairb You can have 2 souls. I don't fully understand the Vorpal Knight. Put the ones you have and what you get from them all detailed in your character sheet for me to read.

Everyone I think we have enough submissions. Everyone will have till the 31st to finish their characters but no new interest posts after this one will be accepted. I will post an updated submissions list soon. I've been away for a few days and have only had my phone to check this thread.

Glad you clarified on the Automatic feat updates...it takes a bit of wind out of my sails since it means I can't pick up the umbral scion line until 3rd and 4th level, but that is fair...as a drow with the noble feats I am getting a lot of free slas.

I have most of the crunch done, down to buying equipment and writting down the background that is in my head.

I ended up having to make 2 character sheets because the Synthesist is SO different when the Eidolon is off or on.

So, let me introduce you to: Yutin Rong

Yutin Rong
M NE Drow Synthesist/Vorpal Knight, Level 2, Init 3, HP 22/22, Speed 30
AC 15, Touch 13, Flat-footed 13, CMD 15, Fort 3, Ref 4, Will 5, CMB +2, Base Attack Bonus 2
Reach MW Glaive +4 (1d10, x3)
Spiked Gauntlet +4 (1d4, x2)
Psuedodragon Sting Psn Fort 12 - Sleep 1 min, save every min for 10 +4 (1d3+0, x2)
Lamellar Cuirass (+2 Armor, +2 Dex, +1 Misc)
Abilities Str 11, Dex 14, Con 10, Int 16, Wis 14, Cha 18
Condition None

And Yutin Rong - Avatar of Baphomet

Yutin Rong - Avatar of Baphomet
M NE Drow Synthesist/Vorpal Knight, Level 2, Init 3, HP 24/24, Speed 30
AC 17, Touch 13, Flat-footed 15, CMD 19, Fort 4, Ref 4, Will 5, CMB +6, Base Attack Bonus 2
Reach MW Glaive +8 (1d10+6, x3)
Spiked Gauntlet +6 (1d4+4, x2)
Psuedodragon Sting Psn Fort 13 - Sleep 1 min, save every min for 10 +6 (1d3+4, x2)
(+2 Dex, +4 Natural, +1 Misc)
Abilities Str 19, Dex 15, Con 13, Int 16, Wis 14, Cha 18
Condition None

He will be spending most of his time in his full Synthesist form, looking like a small but mean minotaur that eats souls.

To answer your question about what the souls are giving me, I can only manifest one ability from each at this level, so for now it is +1 AC from Infernal Constitution, CLW 3/day as an SLA from the Phylocrux of the Ethereal Rat (a magical beast), and the natural attack from the Psuedodragon, which is a sting that deals 1d3 + str mod damage and has a DC 12 sleep poison on it. Since the DC is con based it goes up to DC 13 when in the minotaur form, but not terrible.

Stated here he shows as ac 17 in the mino-form, but I have Mage Armor and Shield that I can cast time allowing, so I could pump him to AC 25 fairly easily if the need arose.

Long term plan I see the drow nobility and vorpal knight giving him versatility while the synthesist gives the raw beat down power. If the eidolon takes to much damage and gets stripped I imagine he will fall back and cast Summons to defend him. Between the CLW and Rejuvenate Eidolon hopefully that won't happen too often.

***

Edit to add - fair warning one DM to another, While synthesist is a cheesy archetype I think it is the red-herring of this build. Looking it over everything it seems like Vorpal Knight can snowball pretty quickly as I gain levels and start carrying around more souls and getting to add more aspects from each soul, it seems like it could get pretty nasty. You did say you want powerful builds, and I feel like this will fit the bill, but just wanted to be open and honest...VK looks like it gets ugly.

I might switch Willup's second class from Inquisitor (Sacred Huntsmaster) to Ranger (Wild Hunter, Beastmaster). This is purely mechanical and wouldn't change a bit of flavor or style.

Ah, I had thought about the Synthesist. Gives nice durability and allows spells. I discarded it because I found the flavour of the Paladin or Monk better suited to the background.

One question: does the Vorpal Knight really consume/devour the souls he uses?

@Nairb Yea i read that thread and the class abilities fully and it does worry me slightly, especially combined with synthesist shenanigins (ignoring physical stats thanks to the eidolon basically laughs at the pt. buy limit). We shall see how it goes.

The Vorpal Knight captures and stores souls of creatures they kill, stealing some of their abilities for themself. They can consume them to heal themselves too.

Okay. Kit bought and updated on both versions of the sheet. ended up using all 500 gc exactly.

Also expended 2 uses of the harvester's kit ahead of game...figured he probably used it on harvesting the Psuedodragon and Ethereal Rat poisons he has in his inventory. So that sucker is down to 8 of 10.

Here is the accounting:

Free: Glaive, spiked gauntlet, leather armor, explorer's outfit

500 - MW glaive (300) = 200 - Harvester's Kit (65) = 135 - Summoner's Kit (8) = 127 - Ioun Torch (75) = 52 - Dagger(2) = 50 - Masterwork backpack (50) = 0

Hello. This is Kayda Shogokabe, a Half-Orc Soul Weaver/Paladin. I've changed from Yamabushi to Grand Purifier because the former didn't really add anything to the build.

She is capable of using Channel Energy to heal, restore conditions and deal damage. With some more levels, she'll be able to buff and debuff also, and all of this at the same time.

I have spent very little money, since I don't really know what to spend it on. Any ideas welcome.

Thinking over my feat selection, I realized that the Improved [Saving Throw] feats are a little wonky on PbP.

Improved Lightning Reflexes wrote:
Once per day, you may reroll a Reflex save. You must decide to use this ability before the results are revealed. You must take the second roll, even if it is worse

So, on most PbPs, to keep the flow going, GMs say something like

6th level fireball! 6d6, DC 17 reflex save for half: 6d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 5, 3, 3, 4) = 22

If you post that way then there is no time between seeing the dice roll on my save and the result being revealed...I know the bar the saving throw has to meet before I roll.

My proposed rewrite for this is that we make all of the Improved Saving Throw feats a once per day advantage roll (a'la DnD5e).

So it would go to:
Improved Lightning Reflexes: Once per day when making a Reflex Saving Throw, you may decide to roll twice and take the higher result. This decision must be made before you roll.

I added in the last line because I think that is how they would write it to prevent meta-gaming, but technically because of how the dice roller and editing work you would have no way of knowing if someone was playing fair with the "Must decide before rolling" thing, so maybe take that out...but on the whole seems like it might work?

I checked the math and average dice roll wise it isn't too far off. The standard advantage roll has an average result of 13.825. I calculated the possible averages of ILR if you always reroll results below a certain value. It peaks at rerolling anything 10 or lower where the average comes out as 13 even.

Here is the background for Yutin Rong. Hope you enjoy. It was pretty fun to write. Didn't look like you were looking for anything specific in the background, so hopefully this is good. If you need more let me know.

It's kind of long:

He had the dream again. Cold, dark, alone. Lost in the Maze. While he knew it wasn’t real, he was worried. For one, Demon Lords simply did not speak to the son of a house. The matriarch, or perhaps the First Daughter, but to be a male in direct contact with a patron…it wasn’t a good omen. Secondly, he knew from experience that while this was a dream, it was one of those that was far too real. Pains and afflictions inflicted here would come back to his mortal body. He must be careful.

Rong. The word rang through the corridors of the Maze. Or just within the twisting caverns of his mind? It was impossible to tell. Rong, of the house of Yutin. You are chosen. You will perform a great work for your master.

The passage he was in opened into a wide courtyard with a dry fountain in the center. The basalt stonework cracked around the edges. A black spike juts up as the central interest of the fountain, with webs of dark energy crackling up its sides. Beyond the fountain HE stands. Towering over the courtyard with wings unfurled. Rong quickly averts his eyes and falls to his knees in supplication.

Abyssal
”Forgive me master. I know not how this humble servant came to be in thy majestic presence.” While speaking, he quickly signs he words <Apology><Humilty><Pleading>.

Rong. The time has come that WE might turn to the next path in the Maze. WE will ascend above the pettiness of other demons. WE will follow the path of LAMASHTU and become King. Then will the serpent prince Asmodeus pay for his crimes and go from ruler to ruled, slaver to slave. And you, Rong, will be the instrument of OUR ascension.

A rough claw grasped him by the chin, dragging his face to make eye contact with the terrifying Demon Lord. Red eyes searched his face. Another claw brushed white hairs from his brow, and where it touch fire ignited upon his skin. Searing flame and pain took his sight for a moment. And when it passed, he was awake in his bed. A new power seared through his veins.

Rising to find his wash bowl, he splashes water on his face and gazes in the mirror. A dark mark blemishes the once smooth skin of his brow. Concentrating and staring into his mirror, a form begins to take shape around him. The dark mark ignites into a deep red pentagram. The shadowy form coalesces into thick brown fur around his body, the form of a minotaur with a red pentagram glowing upon its brow. Like unto the Dark Lord, but lesser in every conceivable way.

You are the avatar now Rong. Serve me well. Seek the tower and find what I need. Send souls into my Labyrinth to further my plans.

Without thought or effort, Rong formed a sign to himself, the form of the minotaur mirroring it back to him from the glass. <Mercy>

****

Yutin Rong, or Rong of the House Yutin as would be said more formally, is the sixth child and fourth male of his generation. Expected to do nothing more than serve as guard and protector for his sisters, his studies in childhood consisted of the military arts, espionage, and its counters. All subjects at which he did poorly. He felt more drawn to the arcane arts that his sisters studied, but that of course would be unconscionably inappropriate.

His life changed that night when he somehow travelled in his dreams to the Patron’s Maze within the Abyss. Suddenly all of the might and power everyone expected from him was within his grasp. But he had unwittingly done something that should never have been done. The next morning he sought out his father, third husband of the mistress Bersina Yutin, to tell him what happened and seek his advice. Had their family been lesser, patronages of a minor demonlord or even just a major demon like a Balor, perhaps something could have been done. But House Yutin would never be able to accept that a fourth son, A FOURTH!, could be contacted by their Patron, the DemonLord Baphomet himself. The shame was too much, and so the story must have been a lie. Somehow, without the knowledge of his mother or sisters, Rong had studied and begun to understand the arcane arts of summoning. He had bonded an Eidolon and had the audacity to shape it like a poor simulacrum of their Great Lord. Bersina had no choice but to banish the child to not have his shame come upon the whole house. Sacrificing him would have been better, but her hand was stayed for the love of her third husband.

Banished from the only home he had ever known, Rong traveled the catacombs and pathways of the underdark, seeking to better understand his new gifts. As his connection with the Eidolon grew stronger its form slowly came to better resemble that of the Dark Lord, although still falling incredibly short.

It was 2 years into his travels, after beginning to grasp his new arcane abilities and the other dark powers he now possessed to rip the souls from the recently departed, that he finally came across something reminiscent of his dream. Standing like a beacon in a central cavern, there was the Dark Tower, just like it had been at the center of the fountain.

You are the avatar now Rong. Serve me well. Seek the tower and find what I need. Send souls into my Labyrinth to further my plans.

***

Yutin Rong is a strange man of contradictions. He feels pride, shame, and confusion at being selected as an emissary of his Patron. He feels sadness over the loss of his home, and yet excitement for the exploration of the world and his powers. There is doubt about yielding arcane powers that are “a woman’s place”, and yet satisfaction at seeing his spells alter the world around him.

He has found joy while exploring his powers, particularly regarding the capture and exploitation of souls. Bending an enemy to do his will, even after death, has a perverse pleasure to it. Consuming the souls is less enjoyable and he avoids it when he can, but he recognizes the utility that it provides. Also, he suspects souls that he consumes are banished to his Patron’s Labyrinth. So, however distasteful it is, the consumption of the souls serves the Greater Plan.

Your suggestion for the reroll feat is probably the easiest way to do it. I give the DC so you can roll and describe what happens if you succeed or fail to make thins move quicker.

@ioganic The reason i have you as incomplete is your backstory. Unless i completely failed my linguistics check, there is no reference to the spire. You need to add something so i have a connection to use when starting the game.

Still considering what android personality would be the most enjoyable to play then will add Regulus' backstory soon.

Thanks. Nope, I'm the one failing my linguistics. Thanks for also providing a ready hook.

I applied liberal proofreading to it too. I hope it reads better.

Backstory 2.0:

Sansu’s first memory is of crouching in a dark room, surrounded by bodies and the gentle hand of her Sergeant Ling reaching out to save her. He rescued her from the dark dungeon, and took her home to be raised in his village, along with some other men who had been ready to retire. They were good people, all of them, and she was happy there. All seemed good in the world. Then her great grandfather came for her.

Her great grandfather was an old devil. He had apparently orchestrated her birth to the cult and the rituals to empower her with immense arcane abilities. And he was ready to reap his investment, so he sent Mjkal, another infernal devil to possess her, to bring her in line with his plans.

Sansu doesn’t remember much from her possession, but she has occasional dreams about it. The next part she remembers is the blinding screaming in her head when she awoke. A cleric had managed to partially exorcise Mjkal. Because he had been bound by blood, thanks to her grandfather, he was instead driven to a small corner of her mind. That was enough, though. Her new powers helped her overpower her now pet demon and keep him locked away.

She was subsequently detained by the clerics of Desna. Over several months, despite everything, they came to trust that she was free of any infernal influence. She even helped them with a few missions. In the process, she discovered that she could coerce some of Mjkal’s abilities and knowledge. Sometimes Mjkal would share interesting tidbits of knowledge. Confident in her new abilities, she set out on her own, to have a bit of fun.

Just shy of a year of travel since, things went a bit weird. Mjkal been extra quiet for a few days. She also hadn't been sleeping well. She kept waking up to dark dreams, but with little memory if them. After a few days, she thought it might've been some sort of attack from her grandfather, and laid some arcane pressure on her inner prisoner. Instead, Mjkal already seemed to be in pretty bad shape. All she got, was something about protecting her, before he just temporarily vanished.

That night was bad. She kept seeing this giant phallic structure rising from deep with the earth. Its walls were covered with a cobweb of cracks that seemed to glow and then go dark. Sansu didn't remember getting up the next morning or making camp. She finally kicked her haze when the sun was already at midday. She was sooo going to get roaring drunk at the next town, and just try to forget about all this.

Question: May we pre-craft some of our equipment? I'm pretty good with craft alchemy and would love to have some of those fun alchemical items at 1/3 price.

So I just have equipment left. Just finished the backstory. Let me know if I should edit it in some way! I love feedback. Thanks.

Both those backstories are acceptable. That makes 12 completed submissions so far. Just under a week for the rest to be completed. After the 31st I will probably have decided by sat 2nd and we should start on the monday.

Caster4life I'm allowing crafting but not to increase your allowed starting wealth. It will be very useful in game since there are no towns in the dungeon and it will be a while before you will get a chance to 'shop'.

Thanks, GM! That helps me finish up equipment quick!

Nymz is ready...I hope.
The flu has made the rounds through the family and it has been hard to keep up with two sick children and adjust this character. Thank you for running this and for keeping the recruitment open so long.

Aww, nuts, I saw this a few days ago, and started musing on a Bloodrager//Skald but figured I still had plenty of time to apply. Just now read that submissions are closed. :(

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Dang that stinks. Would have loved to have played this with you.

Are submissions actually closed? I was almost done with my Rakdos Bloodrager/Kineticist.

@bigrig107 Your name is on the submissions list so you are allowed to complete it still, by thursday 31st.

I've got a decent loadout of equipment ready to go, though I can always find more mundane equipment worth considering... Some of my equipment will depend on whether or not we have a "create water" caster.

Regulus IV wrote:

If Feenith is in the group with you, he always has create water and purify food and drink so his pet always has options. He is a little low for Allfood but will have that in a couple levels.

It's the 31st somewhere on earth, which means that time is running out. Since I know that we are potentially all over the globe in different countries and time zones, I am going to give until the clock strikes midnight on the dateline(about 45 hours from now).

I will post again when time is up and possibly take a day or 2 to make my selections. So far all 13 completed characters are looking interesting. It will be hard to choose the final 5.

And yes, minor character and equipment alterations will be allowed once the party has been selected.

Tossing my hat in the ring for this intriguing adventure! UU's build is complete to your specs I believe. I'm still working on her background but I'll have that posted tonight.

Thanks for considering her!

Cliff's Notes Background:
Udaya was raised Varisian, has made her career as a tattooist, and relatively late in life 'felt the call' of her Aasimar heritage to do something worthwhile. She is now a Warrior-Priestess of Shelyn... but not the singing/dancing, bard-wannabe type. She leaves proselytizing to other priests and focuses on kicking ass for her Goddess to defend civilization/culture by aggressively defending against the creatures that oppose it. She is no shrinking violet.

Long Background:
When asked about her relationship with Shelyn, all Udaya could say about it - lamely - was "It's complicated." Of course, she knew Shelyn. She'd grown up in Varisia where the Eternal Maiden was a cottage industry for bards and entertainers. But Udaya wasn't exactly checking all the Goddess' boxes. Pretty? Not really. Gifted at singing or dancing, poetry or painting? Nope, nope, nope. Devastatingly charismatic or graceful as a swan? Not really. Udaya's miniscule artistic talents (Craft:Tattoos) put her squarely in the 'ugly duckling' category. And she took the gross splotch on the back of her hand (Trait:Birthmark) not so much as a sign of Shelyn's favor but more of an indicator that the Gods understood irony.

It wasn't until her teenage years, when her unearthly heritage (Plumekith Aasimar / Scion of Humanity) started to assert itself that she had to revisit the notion. Something was calling to her blood, but it wasn't clear how she should serve. The intervening years hadn't made her any more graceful or talented or charismatic - not like every member of Shelyn's wandering clergy she'd ever met. She couldn't compete with that crowd and - truth be told - she didn't want to. She wanted to play to her strengths and not be quacking around pitifully after all the swans.

Maybe it was serendipity, or maybe 'someone' put her on the right path... because it seemed a freak occurrence that Udaya was scraping out a few coins while doing tattoos in yet another backwater town in the hinterlands of Taldor when the wiry old hag ambled in and demanded a Songbird tattoo. It was a complicated (and expensive) tattoo so they had time to chat while Udaya worked. What she learned that day was a revelation and set the course for her life. It was valuable enough that Udaya 'gifted' the tattoo to the hag in exchange for an introduction to the Order.

While most of Shelyn's clergy is out creating works of beauty and spreading the faith... there is a small group of militant warrior-priests(esses) (Class Combo: Cleric/Monk) whose job it is to defend artists, their works, and by extension their culture to prevent their destruction. And sometimes the best way to prevent destruction is to stop would-be destroyers. The task isn't pretty and neither are the members of the Order (in general), but their methods are effective. And Udaya liked being one of many 'ugly ducklings' who served the Goddess in their own way. It was a harsh and long apprenticeship but Udaya thrived.

She had grown comfortable with the itinerant lifestyle. Find a fight worth fighting, kick some ass, sell a few tattoos, and move on. But then the dreams started - the spike-like tower with the odd veins cutting the sky. She'd wake in a sweat, feeling like she'd been dipped in malice. It took awhile before she started to get the same gut-churning sensation when awake. She figured the evil called to the celestiality in her blood. It drew her like a magnet pulls iron filings. Opposites attract, right? That's how she sensed it and how she tracked it. She followed the 'pull' for weeks until she found herself staring at the tower that had wrecked her sleep for months. Unfortunately, her dreams weren't worse than the reality. This spike of evil was just as menacing in the real world.

Well, sh!t... she considered, how do I beat this nightmare?

Personality & Appearance:
UU doesn't preach, isn't a holy roller, and won't try to convert anyone. She is irreverent, bawdy, sometimes funny, and generally personable.

The avatar is accurate. UU has dark olive skin, intense dark eyes, and unruly black hair. She is also tatted out. When angry, her aasimar heritage emerges like a halo of black faerie fire around her.

We're down to the wire now so it's about time for one last good luck to all the applicants! Plenty of interesting characters to choose from here!

Yep! Good luck to everyone who entered.

Yes, good luck to all.

Sceptre, a question that really only needs an answer if I make the cut. Is the 3PP Kobold Press Cleric archetype Theosophist OK? Based on your initial post I think it is but I'd like to be sure.

Exactly an hour left for finishing submissions. Then I will post the list of those I will be choosing from and start my deliberations.

@stormraven I'm sorry, this game was already closed to fresh submissions, notice was posted on my first post on this page. It would be unfair if I considered your character when I already turned down another.

croak!

@Sceptre Well, damn, you are entirely correct. Apologies, my recruiting-fu is usually stronger! Guess I should have put on my reading glasses. :) No matter, I'm going to stick around to see who you pick because this is an interesting group of contenders. Enjoy the game guys and girls!

Good luck everybody!

OK

I have finalised my decision. It certainly wasn't easy. All of you are interesting characters. Head over to the discussion thread if your name is below and we'll take a couple days to get ready and for me to be ready to start the game.

Praetor Grey - Half-orc - Warpriest/Shaman
