Pickles notches another arrow hoping that this one is not as warped as the last one. 19 - 1d20 - 3 ⇒ 19 - (2) - 3 = 14 Bow (+2 for DEX, +1 for Halfling) 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 THACO is so confusing for me still. I just don't understand why it exists. I could probably grasp the process if I understood the logic behind it. I think the above means that I would hit an AC14???.

Pickles emerges from the kitchen where he had been begging a snack to stave off starvation... fully armed with two loaves of bread, and a large chunk of cheese in one hand, and a half eaten apple in the other. "What! The town is in danger... more goblins to scout out? I'd better get some more food". The short but wide halfling turns to re-enter the kitchen.

Pickles turns the book every-which way attempting to make sense out of what the lines mean, when he overhears the conversation. "Do you think this might be of use? I can't read it, but it looks like some lines and things on a map of the forest".

"Woo hoo! Thanks! Pickles steps forward, and starts to hug the count, but then realizes that this is not proper courtesy, and instead Graciously accepts his rewards, and walks forward hands raised in celebration and acknowledgment of his heroics, before realizing there is really no adoring crowd to cheer him on, and stepping back into place with the remainder of his group... and Sticks of course.

Pickles wakes up on the verge of crying out. Sticks sets atop his chest whimpering and tentatively licking his nose as he comes to full wakefulness. "There, there now pup. It was just a dream... no a nightmare. I know you would never betray me, and I would... probably... never betray my friends. Let's go see what's for first Breakfast".

Pickles tries to find any spent arrows that might still be usable, with Pup trying to make a game out of it, and returning to the halfling with all manner of sticks... including one almost too big for the pup to carry. "Good boy! You've got a name now. 'sticks' is your new name". He then searches the mill for a juicy rat or something to cook up as a reward for his new companion.

Pickles draws back his bow as if to send an arrow at the retreating figure, but then remembers the results of his last few shots against the armored creature and thinks better of it. "Yes. Let's look around a bit, then head back to town to resupply before getting into this any further". 1d20 ⇒ 9 WIS (Target of 7)

Pickles eyes widen as he sees his more bloodthirsty comrades continue to press the fight. "No! What are you doing? We're going to die". He then says some choice halfling curse words, and lets fly another arrow at the armored nemesis. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 Bow 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Arrow. And tries to find some cover to not draw attention, noticing that his quiver is soon to be empty. (6-arrows left). In his fear he notices that the arrow once again clanked off the steel armor.

Pickles breathed a sigh or relief that the battle was over, and the man was withdrawing. "Whew! That was close". As he's beginning to pack up his stuff, and checking on pup, he notices that his companions hadn't taken advantage of the opportunity to save themselves. Pickles will wait to see what the man's reaction is before he makes up his mind to fight or flee".

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 Bow 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Arrow Pickles turns his attention to the smaller wolf with his next attack. "That's sounding like a good idea to me! My arrows aren't sharp or strong enough to penetrate that things armor".

Pickles once again targets the big warrior, taking a deep breath to try and steady his aim. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 Bow 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 Arrow But the puppy under his robes twists and scratches his left nipple, causing the arrow to go awry. "Ouch! That might be your name... Ouch".

Do't forget Pickles goes on the same count as the goblins, and hit one of them... if that keeps one of the inured goblins from attacking.

Pickles stays back from the melee if possible, and uses arrows to try and pelt the goblin knight. Pup is tucked into his armor next to his body, and squirming a bit due to the activity. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 Shortbow 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 Pointy stick with feathers on one end. Initiative

At first you think you see a child playing with a puppy over by a giant fallen wolf... but then you realize he's clad in chain armor, and is cleaning a wicked looking sword on the said wolves fur. The halfling turns at the conversation, scooping up a puppy as he does so. He extends a grubby hand. "Hi! Names Pickles and this is... well... he doesn't have a name yet. I'm sure something will come to me soon. Maybe he'll earn a name". He goes over and looks at the bound goblin. "Personally I think transporting a captive in a sack is a good idea. Shouldn't take four of us to handle this scrawny thing". He then sets the pup down, and it immediately runs off to some of the dried meat, struggling to pull away a hunk bigger than he is with a snarl and a look of "Just try and take this from me".

Pickles is a bit hesitant to leave his new friends side, so he calmly pulls forth an arrow to loose at one of the archers. 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 Initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 Shortbow. 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 Arrow But his bad luck continues...

"Here hold this". Pickles thrusts the sleeping bundled puppy to brother Jacob. "Let me sneak up and see what we're up against before we go charging in. Might be a preferable approach. Keep an ear out for my shouts if I get in danger though". 1d100 ⇒ 94 (90%) Chance to hide/sneak in forested area. I'll be damned. I must be the least sneaky halfling in the world... As Pickles starts forward, his new puppy friend awakes and starts howling for his missing master.

Pickles shows great gratitude to the children, and takes the soldier with awe. "Thank you. Now I have someone to watch my back". He tucks the soldier deep into the folds of his clothes. "I'll come back to visit when we're through, and teach you guys some new games".

Pickles had finally joined the others after spending an inordinate amount of time trying to befriend the family pets. He arrived just as they were being shown their sleeping arrangements, and smiled to himself when he didn't have to duck to enter. There are advantages to being small. He ate at the childrens table for meals, as it was more comfortable, and he didn't have to climb into or jump off of the chairs. The next morning he not only ate everything he could, he also stuffed his pockets with leftovers. Might need something for second breakfast. He follows the others whistling a merry tune, and carving something unrecognizable which he swears is a swan out of a hunk on wood. |
