"Technology is easy. It does exactly what you want, if you just know how to ask. Too bad people don't work that way."
Perallus is a child of the machine, so to speak. Growing up in an age of surging technology and scientific advances left him with an affinity for all things mechanical and electronic. Computers and droids speak a different language to most people, but Perallus had a knack for the lingo that got him into all sorts of places people didn't expect, including classified military networks. Being able to slave a droid's sensors and motivators can net one a fly-on-the-wall view for a long time, and being able to remotely slice a military security terminal through a utility droid's probe can reveal all sorts of fun facts.
However, as history can attest, all spies are eventually caught. While remotely touring the local imperial base, Perallus spied an unusual exchange: a shady character, dressed as a soldier, began to use the controlled droid to record a message to the rebellion. Perallus had spotted a double agent.
Faced with an odd quandary, Perallus was quite puzzled at this new prospect. He had no cares one way or another about the empire, as his family had been mostly left in peace due to their happy coincidence of location and usefulness, and the rebellion had not affected his community directly, as he had only heard news feeds of their so-called terrorism on other worlds. After hearing the recorded message and decoding the data transmitted to the droid, however, his decision was made for him: His world was the Rebellion's next target.
Deciding at last to do something with his newfound knowledge, he maneuvered the information to the imperial leaders of the base. Though he got the attention of the command structure, he also managed to set off a failsafe placed by the rebel slicer. The overload managed to not only fry the droid, but cause a feedback loop that detonated his own terminal. The injuries were so severe that the arm he shielded himself with had to be amputated. This in turn led to full disclosure of his activities with no chance of bluffing his way out.
He feared he and his family would suffer for infiltrating imperial military compounds, but instead of arresting him, the imperial commander made him an offer. His involvement had brought crucial rebel plans into imperial hands, doing them and his world a great service. Rather than waste such talent in prison, he extended Perallus an invitation to military service, putting his intelligence skills and mechanical talents to use in defending the peace of the sector in the name of the empire. In return, he would be fitted for a replacement arm superior to the original, well paid, and trained in various combat and survival skills with the chance to fly the space lanes as an imperial pilot.
Years passed. Missions came and went. Perallus grew into his new arm and his position. His skills improved. He found comrades and rivals alike. He quickly demonstrated his talent for modifying and upgrading machinery and electronic devices of all kinds, earning him recognition among his commanders and peers as the equipment specialist of his unit. He eventually found himself selected for more black ops missions as a security specialist. In combat training, he was known for his ability to find cover and take careful aim, rather than lead assaults, so his commanders steered his practice towards longer ranged weaponry. His first blaster rifle quickly became a subject of discussion as he modified it to fit his style. Some balked at his tampering with standard issue equipment, but his modification costs were all out-of-pocket, so he rarely drew disciplinary action from his superiors. All in all, Perallus couldn't really complain about his duties, since he got to spend more time with computers and machines of all types; it also gave him the opportunity to hopefully, someday, get even with the one who took his arm and tried to threaten his planet...
