Well I appreciate the swift response everyone. I think this one is put to bed rather well.

Gotcha, part of his argument was that hes spending the customizations to get the ability so it would be on top of.

We aren't concerned about the provoking part so much as if in the current state he gets a 4th attack or not.
Your emphases is saying that he has the option to use it as part of his 3 attacks or all 3 of his attacks, not that he gains a 4th, correct?

I've got a player thats running an Aegis with the Astral Suit customization of "ranged attack" that reads:
Ranged Attack: The aegis gains the ability to propel a non-psionic crystal, formed from the astral suit, at a target as a ranged attack that deals 1d8 points of piercing damage and has a range increment of 30 ft. This attack can be used as part of a full attack, including using this attack for each attack in the full attack.

The two schools of thought being:
1: He can do his normal 3 attacks and add an additional ranged astral suit attack at the end of it, but he has the option to do up to 4 of the ranged attacks from his suit if he chooses. This is based on the "can be used as part of a full attack, INCLUDING using this attack for each attack in the full attack." meaning that the ability gives him that attack, but can also replace normal attacks.
2: He is able to do the ranged attack as an option for any part of his normal 3 attacks, but it doesn't grant an additional 4th attack which would have to be the suit attack if he chooses to use the suit attack during the full round attack.

Does anyone know if there has been a ruling (I've checked this site, the publishers site, and a few guides and come up empty handed. Also, if you could point me in a direction that would support either argument, we would very much appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for your time and any help you can provide in this matter.

//close thread//

Hey all,
I am looking fo help tracking down a spell or psionic power (i know thats not a Paizo sanctioned thing, and I may need to look elsewhere) but about two months ago I was browsing around and saw a spell or power that read something to the effect of:
you drain HP/cause damage at X amount. If the damage done kills the target, you gain ability score based on how many more HD the target had than your level.
It then had a table for something like "1-2 HD higher: +1 to 1 ability score that maches the highest score of your target. 3-4 HD higher: +1 to the 2 scores matching the highest 2 of your target." etc up to "20+ HD higher: +3(or 4) to the 4(or 5 or 6) scores...etc"

If anyone knows what this is or can point me in the right direction, I'd very much appreciate it.
I'm going to keep looking but going through all the spells and powers on my phone is arduous(spelling) and more than time consuming.
If I find it I'll be sure to link it as well to close out this thread.

As always, to anyone that looks or helps: thank you in advance for your time and any help you can provide in this matter.

Happy hunting. See you all at Pharasmas Boneyard.

Shameless bump?

Hey all, i was reading some on the Barbarian Dragon Totem Resilience feature and after searching the forums found this:

http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2mnm6?Dragon-Totem-The-new-improved-Invulnerabl e-Rager

I didnt really want to necro it and it doesnt seem to have a clear answer.

My question, as was the back and forth on that page, is this:
The last line, "This resistance equals double her current DR/- from her barbarian damage reduction class feature; this DR increases by 2 for each dragon totem rage power she possesses, including this one. " can be read as either a flat bonus to actual Barb DR/- for each totem; or as a bonus to the multiplier.

So, does taking this totem give a Barb with a normal 2DR/- and 1 totem rage power a constant 4DR/- and ER of 8 for the energy type chosen while raging or would it be 2DR/- and ER of 8?

Looking forward to some aid and thank you guys in advance.

I've played summoner for maybe 2 years now and that whole first year was me revamping my sheets for both summoner and eidolon every time I read the books. I would find a wording that would make me shift a lot of my numbers. Level up, learn a new ability or stat change and then dig through the rules and find that it couldn't work based on X, make the corrections and get caught in the same problem soon there after.
I think the intention was for the "to hit" attack roll to be used as the rest of the monsters in the universe have it: str mod and bab. As Sitri pointed out, that's how the numbers fall in the books. The linguistition in me was saying RAW, due to wording, it would mean not including the str mod. However, our belief is that it falls inline with the rest of the monsters or else the "universal monster rules" would mean that all the monsters somehow get a huge boost from no where that perfectly matches their str mod.

Flesh out a level 5 eidolon and make one with no str mod on its attack rolls and one with, then make it fight a mock battle and watch how totally useless it is in the "without the str mod" version, it can't hit anything evenly leveled.

I hope this helps.

That's how I had been playing it until I went from a pounce, bite ,claws x2 and rend build that could tear into a baddie each round to a more battlefield control build of pounce, bite, bite, trip, reach on bite. With the feat that let's your dex bonus give extra aoas, he can bite, free trip on landing a bite and reach on that whole mix let's my melee party members get a prone bonus and can stop many reloads and spells on the spot. My dm and I went over the numbers to keep it legal, having learned and grown through a few other games and revised my guy a few times as we dug up new or more correct rules.
I figured that was the case, and thank you Sitri. I said the same and my dm was saying because of how it was worded that that must have been the intent.
So I saw my neat "battlefield control" that had been a rape beast be TOTALLY unable to land more than 2 attacks all session. A large quad build with a bab or 3 and a str bonus of 9 land 2 hits and do a nice bit of damage but just missmissmiss the rest of the time.
Thanks again.

From the universal monster rules
"Primary attacks are made using the creature’s full base attack bonus and add the creature’s full Strength bonus on damage rolls. Secondary attacks are made using the creature’s base attack bonus –5 and add only 1/2 the creature’s Strength bonus on damage rolls."
It says "full BASE attack bonus" not "full attack bonus"
Base attack bonus is derived from level or HD of the critter. Where as attack bonus is bab+srt bonus+size mod.
It also specifies that you add the str bonus to damage, like normal PCs.
The fact that it specifies that "full bab" and not just attack bonus means that you wouldn't add str bonus and size mod on you "to hit" rolls, simply add you bab.
Theb you see the eidolon go from powerhouse that's shredding when compared to your partys dedicated damager into something more reasonable.

I play a summoner and am constantly finding things like this when I have my eidolon wreck house and want to find out why that cr+3 team was taken out by just my one critter and a few bolts from a crossbow.

If anyone has a different take other than "they accidently added the word "base" and meant for them to act the same as a PC" I'm all willing to hear it. I love taking down and constantly tripping everything with my reached bite, so if you can rationalize him back into my game I want it :)
Hope this helps some,or at least generates some good discussion.

But from the rules it says that monsters always get only their bab on attack rolls. Its specific in that you don't add strength bonus to your attack bonus as a monster. So that +16 to hit would still just be the +5 from bab and not add the +11 from strength.
