Nolan grew up as a petty thief in Almas, squandering his magical talents on winning at gambling. One day he tried his luck on a card game against an armored man who seemed to have had a bit too much to drink. Nolan won big that night and was happily counting his earnings as he walked out into the night, not noticing the same man he had just swindled standing just to the side, sober as a cleric.

Nolan jumped as the man placed a hand on his shoulder. "That's quite a trick you've got there. That kind of innate skill doesn't come natural, ya know. Interested in turning that luck to something more beneficial to the greater good?" the man asked. "It's either that or I can have you hauled off to prison. Your choice."

Nolan turned to look at the man and saw just how serious he was and simply nodded. The man took him to Absalom where he was introduced to the Pathfinder Society and was, almost forcibly, signed up as a pathfinder himself. From then on his days of petty trickery were over but his roots in the gambling den never left him as his weapon of choice still shows.
