Thanks a lot for the input guys, I appreciate it! I was lamenting not getting Fates Favored for divine favor instead of veteran of battle. And I could really use Magical Lineage too I was just looking at that and sighing that'd be perfect for the level 5 feat choice. I was planning on getting an extend rod first since they are only 3k. I will have to worry about quicken later. Thanks for the input! And Magda, seeing your input on how Magda does in combat on the Reach Cleric guide discussion page is one of the reasons I chose a Core reach cleric in the first place =) Enjoy your summer! ![]()
Yes, the reasoning for the longspear was to be able to cast on my turn and still provide some deterrent to attacking ranger/rogue and get attacks on the enemies turn. I don't currently have proficiency with heavy armor as a cleric, to get it I basically have to lose a caster level and dip something else right? Also would spell storing be that great since I only have 16 wis and no spell focus or anything? The DC on stored spells for half damage would be in the.. 14-15 range depending on the spell level? Also how is the Enlarge a swift action? ![]()
Hey folks, I'm hitting level 5 soon with a high strength reach cleric and trying to figure out what I should prioritize feat/gear-wise next level and plan ahead a little. The game is almost all Core, the DM might let me grab Holy Vindicator later, or I'll likely just stay all cleric. My pc is a human level 4 Cleric of Gorum Strength/Destruction domains with a MW longspear and greatsword and other things for backup. My feats are improved initiative/combat reflexes/power attack. Traits are Veteran of Battle and the trait that gives you acrobatics as a class skill and +1 to it. We are currently in the last part of Skinsaw in Sandpoint stumbling across the you-know-whats in you-know-who's house. The stats are Str - 19
Don't ask about the stats, some crazy straight 1 for 1 20 point-buy. The group consists of human Cleric 4 (me), halfling rogue/going sorc, half-elf ranger, human paladin.
Also I have high skill in acrobatics to be mobile but found out I shouldn't be tumbling because of medium armor movement hindrance, so I need to get to work on a mithral breastplate. Does that mean I'd have to sell the one I have and save up/pay 5300gp for a +1 mithral one later since I can't poof it and make it mithral? As for a weapon, I was thinking about getting the Holy ability put on my main weapon at level 9 and then see where things are then to add another bane or something later. Sorry for the WOT, any gear/feat/training thoughts? I am considering going Holy Vindicator, but would lose out on CL especially with no magical knack, though serious casting wasnt my main thought (maybe it should've been). Should I stay straight cleric and just keep goin? I am trying to put together some kinda plan like I should've from the beginning heh, thanks!. ![]()
Hey Ganryu, why bother with bracers of armor yet if mage armor is still serviceable? Save thousands of gold to invest in other gear/consumables you need. Combine the Shawl of Life with your cloak of resistance for only 1500gp, that's 10hp of auto-healing insurance if you go (a little) negative for cheap. Mage armor is 4ac, +2 from RoP +2, +1 from size, and what about Shield and Mirror Image? Shield is short lived of course, but if you have any kind of prep time before a fight I'd go for at least mirror image. You could spend 2k on a +1 mithril buckler for another +2ac with 0 arcane penalty. So there is 3500gp you saved from BoA +2 for the same armor increase that stacks with Mage Armor and a little insurance. Assuming mage armor is already up (which it should be at hours per level), you are at about 19ac. Add 1d4+4 mirror images (at CL 9) to help soak up ranged shots/charge attacks etc. There's also Blink for 20% miss chance or Displacement for 50% miss chance. Don't forget about other things too like obscuring mist or smokesticks for 20% miss chance and breaking line of sight. It's a 10ft cube of smoke for smokestick and 20 foot cube for obscuring mist. Try and think about things like staying directly behind teammates and spells that cause difficult terrain or dropping caltrops or marbles in front of you, something to stop chargers if that is a problem. Also you need mobility of some sort by now at level 9, if not fly at least boots of levitate or *something* to get you out of easy stomping reach. Your DM should assume you are going to be flying or something often like that by now anyway. It's a little early still and I'm waking up, but these are a few things to consider, have a good one! -Napper ![]()
Hey folks, I am a new player and could use some help deciding what kind of gear to buy. We are just starting Skinsaw Murders, I have about 2700gp to spend or save. Atm I have no scrolls, am planning on getting a few restoration and other emergency/situational scrolls. I currently am using a mw cold iron longspear with a plain greatsword as backup as a cleric of Gorum. Strength/Destruction domains, have combat reflexes/improved initiative/power attack as feats. I have +1 breastplate and ring of protection +1. I was thinking about getting a +1 greatsword for Enlarge use, getting acid/electric enchant later and then working on defenses again, or maybe ioun stone with +1 initiative and cloak of resistance +1 and maybe save the rest? I'm thinking about investing in a Shield wand for the arcane to hit me with perhaps? Maybe I should keep working on defense first or get the +1 greatsword, or maybe a couple lvl 1 pearls of power to cover buff use? Too many options, I'm a noob any ideas help thanks! ![]()

Thanks for the fast feedback! I am still not sure on my opposed schools, my first choices were originally enchantment/necro, I am still not set on any yet. I was originally going to oppose enchantment but then I thought about losing sleep/charm person etc, but thats just low level basically and I have other concerns. Like you said about necro, and Treeantmonks guide, it is great for debuffing and I'm not sure I still want to get rid of it. Let's say I go Conjuration (Shifting? baby dimension door as Su sounds amazing) and ban evocation, what else should I pick? It seems like no matter what I pick as an opposition, I miss out on something crucial. My main desires and focus for the class is a lot of knowledges, control spells and buffing/debuffing, depending on what we are up against. Any kind of direct damage I do will be a tertiary concern at best. The rest of the group seems to want to see me toss fireballs, but I'd rather summon something, or multiple somethings and have them do that. ![]()
Ok, I've read tons of d&d/pathfinder stuff over the years, but my actual playtime is virtually indistinguishable from 0. I am in a group of 5, almost all new players, with a DM who is totally new to it and he picked Rise of the Rune Lords as the first campaign to play. So far the party will start at level 1 and consists of the following: Ranger (archery)
It is mostly core only with archetypes available and mostly Core spells.
So - I've decided to fill the gap and play an Elven divination wizard with evocation/necromancy as opposed schools. Are these bad choices? Any spell or other core wizard options I should consider? I dont expect this campaign to really go the distance with the current group. I was going to try and go more control spell options over blasting, I would rather prevent damage in concert with the cleric than have him be the 'the healer' everyone seems to want him to be. Any thoughts? Thanks for your time ![]()
Also if you are going to be doing summoning, why not go master summoner/cleric? Something like Master Summoner 3 - Cleric 1. You get Augment Summoning free at lvl 2. Then you can get Superior Summoning at level 3 and you get a free extra monster every time you summon, which is a free twin spell.
