The shadow enchantment version of dominate is going to be a higher DC level and 99% likely going to be specced to Hell and back as a specialist in shadow spells (or illusion spells). Also as far as the 60% real, there are several different options to get that closer to 80%. I would also point out that the RAW does not guarantee the save to disbelieve for interacting, it only says its possible, hence if they ask for it.

Deep Magic keeps looking better. :D I am super excited about the shadow and star magic, and now the artwork... would love to see some more of the previews. I think one of the things that also has me excited is seeing all these wizard marks from other supporters, that in itself is probably a worthy project.
Geeze DM :) you derailed my thread! I am taking what you say into account, and if you would like I can send you a free copy of the next book... I am cool with constructive criticism, in fact welcome it! Just send me your email, the first draft should be ready soonish lol... I am looking at the power levels... for reference the Blades book is going to try to be along the power of Book of Nine Swords, with the encounter abilities for sustainment and still the one power per 2 levels. I am refining a few things. I am trying to be very careful not to outclass the new fighter/rogue/barbarian/bard while at the same time trying to be classier !! Also for everyone still interested, the Rituals/Babbler is done, and will be going up for 2.99 (but I will be giving away a few copies to some people here). As far as editorial review, still in the process... but have two new people helping me out with it, so hopefully that will help a lot. Right now we are at 7.99 for each of the two books up, but will be looking at prices again.

You can contact me here ;) I picked up some of the genius books, but not any of the 4-wind ones yet, to compare them price wise. I figured that 9.99 was a good price for 32+ pages, because thats what Paizo charges. The print editions got delayed, because I am making a large round of changes on some of the mechanics... in direct response to some of your questions... the implements section is to add flavor, making magic items more like what a witch would use, but leaving it open enough to interpretation. Art wise, the second book has a bit less on the inside because my artists were both overburdened, but book 3 will have quite a bit more and stack in much heavier page count wise. I have a new editor who speaks english as her first language, so that should help! ;) As far as overpowered, you will find that the DCs and abilities almost exactly match a certain class hidden away in one of the Eberron books...one that is mostly about priests. You also get a power every other level as Pathfinder set out so you have no dead levels. The PRC was designed with the same power level in mind, but be sure to check the minimum reqs to get in, you are already on your way to an epic campaign with that PRC. What I liked best was that there were choices at each level, so not every witch or Omin Nasir was exactly the same as the next one... a lot like an Archmage. I intend to keep that idea in the future, and Paizo obviously liked it... look at all the melee classes :) I do appreciate any and all feedback, and you can email me, message me wherever, etc... or post here (although I don't check here everyday). I really do hope everyone who purchases it likes it, and I will be sending out an email to everyone who has purchased a copy when a new edition is available for free download with the errata. EDIT*** BTW, my supplement about Ritual Magick and additional spells will be either no cost or something like 2.99, it is 16 pages and should be a good preview for people interested in my other books. I should have it up soon! BTW all of my books you can copy/paste and print for your campaigns, or hopefully soon be able to order a printed copy!

Apparently a few people found me on linkedin as well as facebook and UGO...so we have 3 more review copies out of people who will hopefully post on RPG and here. Also you will notice the price for each is now $9.99 and if you buy both together, you save an additional $2. The ritual magic product will be up later this week and the martial powers stuff later this month. Looking forward to the reviews and feedback so I can improve the products for everyone, especially excited about the new batch of artwork! edit: I swear the website is being updated as soon as I find time, or can cajole my wife into doing it!

Its not much cheaper the cut they take for print copies at RPG ;) but I usually print stuff at work if I am going to be using it at a gaming session! Urizen getting first opportunity to review! (btw updating my email here...it shouldn't be bouncing)
How about the first 2 people to PM me can get free coupons... I've given out 19 review copies already and not a single person has reviewed it. It has me a bit miffed about the review process at DrivethruRPG. In fact the only feedback I got was someone refused to review it because it was double columned, which I didn't quite understand because a friend of mine got blasted for having it in single column format (by the same reviewer). The Shadow book has over 100 spells and quite a few new feats as well as a base class and prestige class, while its the reverse in the thaumaturgy book... I put my best magic modifying feats in that one (I wanna say over 40) and a good amount of new spells, a new base class as well as the Omin Nasir prestige class. The Omin Nasir has a lot of history and lore behind it, and many people will see it as a cross between a certain elven keeper of secrets and the arch mage, basically a stepping stone to becoming a high mage. I ended up cutting out the section on ritual magic because of printer issues, they are still working that out at drive thru...but it really does look great printed out and glossy (you can order print copies this month starting on the 5th). I think I may add the ritual magic as a free download for everyone (its about 11 pages double columned!) and put it at the end of the thaumaturgy print book as a bonus. http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=80757?affiliate_ id=293035 http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=80434?affiliate_ id=293035
Well Hello Everyone, a friend of mine pointed out this thread... I'm actually the author and noted about the price, really didnt have a lot of guidance on it....but I think 10 dollars is fair? is that something that everyone could live with? If you already bought the second book "Thaumaturgy" shoot me a message on drivethrurpg and I can send you a coupon for a few dollars off the other.
P.S. The MageChantry website is mainly just for my gaming group, but I am working on revamping it.
Well what about an actual taunt skill using intimidate? Something like an additional use of Taunt or Bluff as a free or swift action... you make an opposed Check vs their Sense Motive... and if successful they must focus all their attacks/defenses on you their next turn. As far as offense... I think having a very high amount of avoidance (charisma bonus to dodge, additional bonus to AC) you just need to bump up their inherent attack abilities slightly... like maybe a feat that allows a free attack of opportunity (treat the monster as flat-footed) against any monster you succesfully Taunt/intimidate With the above two examples... you don't really increase the power directly of the class...but you give him new tools in which to do his job... make him more survivable as well as dealing a bit more damage (go go combat reflexes if he can taunt a few creatures at a higher DC) All of that w/o huge changes to the class
There seem to be a lot in the pipe for rogueish PrCs or rogue dips... ex. Shadowdancer would be great for a fighter... except that a defensive fighter is going to take combat expertise... throw in the dodge, mobility and combat reflexes and you have just about taken away all options for a succesful fighter transition to shadowdancer. What shadowdancer really lacks is a way to increase your dodge bonus as you level... this would help offset what you lose by not going straight fighter and your armor bonuses (which are great btw!) As a fighter going shadowdancer you have very stringent reqs to get in, you lose all your fighter abilities for AC and offense (and have very little left feat wise if any to increase that)... you drop a chart on bab progression and you have a lower HD. I think removing mobility from the pre-req and increasing the dodge bonus by +1 at levels 1/4/7/10 (total dodge bonus =5) that this prestige would be a good option for dex fighters w/o overpowering it for rogues who go this route (who will be spending all their feats on improving BS)

Couldn't agree more... a prestige class should grant new abilities in line with the classes intended purpose... In addition as a prestige class, the requirements for entry are a bit more stringent then going 20 with a straight class. The MT is a weaker caster in both cases then the divine or arcane caster going straight 20. The biggest benefit of this is a larger range of spells, but again you are looking at difficult entry requirements and an unlinked primary caster attribute. What I would like to see... D6 hps
10 full casting levels...for each... Now what makes it special... 1. Casting Focus: A one time boost to the players choice either divine or arcane class, adding four full caster levels up to the players HD. This would grant spells per day and spells known. Effectively giving you full casting powers in one class, without the bonus abilities in the single class. 2. Magical Combination: A MT's spells are treated as both divine and arcane with the benefits and drawbacks that implies. In addition this makes your spells harder to resist (+2 caster level for overcoming SR, and -4 for dispel attempts as this is unfamiliar magic) 3. Focused Study: Both your arcane and divine spells now use a single ability score for casting, chosen by the player. Meaning that a wizard/cleric/MT could choose either Intelligence or Wisdom to base spellcasting stat, this would include max spell level able to cast, and bonus spells. 4. Empowered Metamagic: you may sacrifice up to 1 spell slot/memorized spell level equal to half of MT level per round. By doing so you may offset an equal number of levels to use towards metamagic. Effectively an 8th level MT could sacrifice a 4th level divine or arcane spell slot to maximize the spell he is casting. This is a swift action.
regarding the OP, There is definitely a problem in certain level ranges... I would place this around levels 5-12. Lets look at these ranges a bit... 1-5
5-12
13-20
I think the biggest problem is there needs to be a baseline... you have 4 ways of adjusting the ATT vs AC ratio: Armor/Equipment
The two most likely candidates for a rigid baseline are armor/equipment and innate (class, feats, etc). That way every combat you go into, things start out pretty regular... then you throw your variables in to push the combat in one direction or another via combat options and buffs. Armor/Equipment is pretty well balanced, except for the fact as the OP pointed out that it gets so bloody expensive so quickly that you cant be expected to have a optimal baseline without severe shortings in other areas (ie your +1 plate with +8 worth of other things). My solution to this would be a system similar to the above... but making upgrading the same old equipment easier with a straight 50% discount since you are upgrading, not creating from scratch. Classes are looking quite a bit more balanced (although their damage output is quickly approaching tome of battle levels which just further exasperates the problem of one shot kills...) The way I see it, players should be cautious and that should be rewarded... but they shouldn't be afraid to strike off on their own to scout a corridor, or be the unlucky guy who has to open a door (you know the monk who is about to die again)... they should have a reasonable (and in this case I mean 60-75% chance) of surviving each round of concentrated attack. As for players being damage machines, you don't want the players one shotting everything... but except for the leaders of each encounter or in rare encounters of player leveled NPCs... the trash should just be there to inflict minor damage and be an inconvenience... its the heroes and the anti-heroes who control the fate of battle. Those anti-heroes should be equivalent to players or even slightly to moderately stronger (if there is less trash)

It's not that I felt I was singled out, I definitely have bad days and worse when it comes to writing (as well as proposals) it just seemed poorly done to get them in mass on proposals over a 4-5 month span all at once with a form letter. There was grumblings on a few boards about the form letter and I just wanted to express to others that it wasn't all bad and the tone of my post wasn't meant to be negative but an encouragement to keep trying. Thanks for your time in replying Jason and others...
I think its a bit unfortunate that apparently someone caught up with their backlogged emails today (I recieved no less then 6 rejected queries via form letter, that spanned several months and were sent within seconds of each other). If thats any indication as well as what I saw posted here and on the wizards site among others that there are literally hundreds of potentially viable articles just rejected so that someone can catch up. If the letter were a bit more upfront and explained the situation as was presented on the boards that you were far behind and playing catch up and asking people to resubmit I think that would have been a more equitable solution. Anyhow being used to rejection and rejecting others myself (I'm the community manager and editor for a UGO Entertainment property)I don't find it as discouraging but when I was in my teens and early/mid 20's such a blow would have been devastating to realize that my proposals hadn't been read. Anyhow to other writers out there don't be discouraged and keep trying with as many varied outlets as you can, the practice can only improve your art.

Good to hear, although unfortunately for you I am about to start sending more in. I've had quite a few ideas come up as I've been creating my backup character for our current campaign (Anima Mage is such a really cool class as are binders and Shadow Casters in general)

Your Avatar from the new miniatures pack is great... I have 2 of them but its probably one of the coolest ones I've gotten from that set (mind you I havent gotten a succubus yet but im still trying!) Based upon the CE alignment, I'm going to guess that you shouldn't get the alcohol!
These 2 are the children of Succubi and a mortal (specifically a human) whereas the other combinations typically result in a tiefling. I have seen the Fiend templates and level progressions (unearthed arcana/complete mage) but I was really expecting either of the Fiendish Codex (I especially) to contain these since monster manual 1 typically had them... but no luck. I would love to see these brought to light for Dragon
My group goes through Psionicists like wet naps at a craw fish boil... which has the advantage of being able to see the plethora of feats--classes--abilities available (we are currently in a Eb campaign that likes to bounce between the continents a lot although we are based in Sharn)... Personally I pour over every issue for the newest feat--spell--trick etc for arcane/divine casters (my specialty) as I currently play the groups moral compass, A cleric/twilight redeemer (custom PrC), who worships the Shadows aspects of twilight. Our parties ranger is always trying to adjust his class with every issue it seems like as a new Ranger feat becomes available (hes a fighter/ranger with a legacy bow... think DnD Cartoon!) Anyhow on to the point (yes there is one), less psionics and more magic! (and domains and cookies for all)
Being former military myself I used to love getting a copy of Dragon while I was out deployed somewhere... sitting in the middle of the desert or january triple threat under 10 feet of snow and you got a dozen guys sharing your magazine and excited about the next time they get back to the billets to play Porthos. has not created a profile. |
