About MayenyiBackground:
Mayenyi was born in the small chlorvian town of Bistan on Shinshatila, a temperate planet whose two major continents are both situated almost perfectly in the warm, rainy latitudes near the equator. Though Shinshatila's largest city, on the southern continent, has a lone Gate, off-worlders were simply unheard-of in Bistan, and the locals were perfectly happy to maintain their crops and livestock, raise their families, and worship Lianthus in relative peace. Life in Bistan was not precisely idyllic - working the land is never easy, and there were threats aplenty from the Shinshatilan wildlife, livestock raids from other villages, and so on - but in general, the world Mayenyi grew up in was good to her.
She was the eldest of five siblings, and was part-time mother for the last two, a fact that still marks her personality to this day. More importantly, at least from the perspective of her town, was that Mayenyi was one of the verdanliyin, the chlorvians touched by the power of the world's ecology and Lianthus' own divinity. The verdanliyin serve as the voice of the worldspirit for their villages, and use their abilities to protect their communities and maintain the health of the symbiotic links between humanoids and their surroundings. Mayenyi was happy, she was respected, and she had a role in caring for her people that she was excited to fulfill. Until the jagladine took her. She went to bed one night in her cabin at the town's periphery and awoke in a nightmare of torture and pain. To this day, she has no idea how the jagladine reached Bistan, why they took her, or whether she was the only one stolen away. All she knows is that she lost weeks, maybe months, in a haze of agony and merciless experimentation. Finally there came a day when the drugs they kept her helpless with did not work as they should have, when the klaven that appeared at her cell door were not prepared for her to be conscious and waiting for them. The worldspirit gave her a weapon, turned away the klaven's attacks, guided her hands as she struck out against them. Then she ran. It took her days of crossing the seemingly-endless desert to find a road, and then more days to reach the nearest civilization: the metropolis of Zel-Argose. She had never visited Argosa before, and though she found others of her kind in Zel-Argose, none of them knew of Shinshatila or had even heard of the traditions of the verdanliyin. Zel-Argose is not much short of Hell from her perspective, but she knows that the further she is away from where the jagladine brought her, the further away she is from any chance to find her way back to her home and her people. So she works as a healer in the city, using her magic and her herbs to take care of the chlorvian community in Zel-Argose, and dreams of a chance - any chance, really - to find some justice, and maybe even a way back home. Personality:
Mayenyi has a bit of a mother-hen complex, despite her relatively young age. Trained as a spiritual leader for her people, she freely offers advice and expects it to be taken, but understands that she can only suggest, not command. She hates klaven and jagladine with a great passion, but rarely encounters either, so her fury is largely contained. Otherwise, she's friendly and gregarious in the manner of her people, reaching for common ground and goodwill with more or less everyone. She has a particular fascination with the auttaine, who seem to approach the idea of symbiosis in a very different way than the chlorvians; she can't decide if it's another expression of the same beautiful concept she worships in Lianthus or a terrible blasphemy. So far she's leaning to the former, which might be related to a couple of rather handsome fellows working in the marketplace... or it might be because she herself now has circuits and brass in her flesh, the legacy of the experiments done to her by her jagladine captors. Appearance:
Mayenyi is just over five feet tall, with her people's woodbark skin and leafy hair. Her eyes, like her hair, change color with the local season, moving from bright green to a darker green in the spring and summer and to a red-orange and then a grey-brown in fall and winter. She usually wears a light woolen tunic in a shade of dark brown or dark green that leaves her arms bare, paired with a mid-thigh leather skirt and boots that reach to just below her knees. For the most part attractive and athletic, her skin is marred on her left leg, where a deep gouge - like a lightning strike into an old tree - runs from the back of her calf all the way up to the front of her thigh: the mark of her status as a verdanliyin. The gouge looks old and well-healed, but it impedes her movement, and where it crosses her knee, a strange contraption of brass and steel has been implanted into the skin, a network of white scars all around it. The number 14073 is impressed into the front brass device. Mayenyi
