DM Ancient wrote:
Fair enough. And sorry about that.

Don't apologize. We got jumped by intelligent enemies in their home turf. Them focusing down the wizard was the smartest choice. It's nice when things go our way and enemies attack our front liners, but in reality enemies would focus me if they get the opportunity. Honestly as a 20th level caster I'm probably ridiculously under-protected. Without the Deva summoned it was entirely possible I would be dead next round.

Male Elf Wizard 20

That's 188 damage total. Mortimer is down and bleeding. Since the archers went first and we just figured out initiative I'm going to change the Deva's action.

The Deva jumps in surprise as Mortimer is shot full of arrows. He floats down and places a glowing hand on the wizard, sealing most of the wounds.

Casting heal. It heals 130 points of damage and also gets rid of the stunned condition.

Mortimer stands with heavy breaths, leaning on the Deva. He whispers, and his voice is filled with a volatile malice, terrifying threats from a being who can reshape reality as he sees fit. "You will regret this." Mortimer utters a spell and vanishes.

Invisibility.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Perception: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (1) + 22 = 23
Fort Save: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17

Beautiful.

Mortimer is having a mental discussion with the invisible imp on his shoulder, completely distracted when they are attacked. The arrows catch him badly, causing him to reel back in shock.

Deva Perception: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (6) + 26 = 32

The deva rushes out invisibly, charging down the archer on the right and appearing to swing his warhammer at him.

Attack: 1d20 + 26 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 26 - 4 = 33
Damage: 1d8 + 14 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 14 + 12 = 34

With the Deva nearby Mortimer was under the effects of it's protective aura, but I doubt it matters. Just letting you know.

Quote:
Protective Aura (Su) Against attacks made or effects created by evil creatures, this ability provides a +4 deflection bonus to AC and a +4 resistance bonus on saving throws to anyone within 20 feet of the angel. Otherwise, it functions as a magic circle against evil effect and a lesser globe of invulnerability, both with a radius of 20 feet (caster level equals angel's HD). The defensive benefits from the circle are not included in an angel's statistics block.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"I'm afraid we will have to tie a rope to them and guide them. This entire forest has an illusion over it."

Male Elf Wizard 20

Perception: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (16) + 22 = 38
Will: 1d20 + 17 - 5 ⇒ (12) + 17 - 5 = 24

Mortimer frowns, then casts detect magic and shifts through all of the auras on the party's gear to try and find whatever it is that is effecting the others.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"I commend you, this was well done. Although you appear to have no entered the middle area here."

Male Elf Wizard 20

"If the map seems to be accurate we will pay." Mortimer glances over it.

Knowledge (geography): 1d20 + 38 ⇒ (8) + 38 = 46

perfect time for Donovan to burst in with the winter goods, blabbing "Alright let's go kill us some linnorms!" Good thing he's still shopping.

Oh god please do it, that would be hilarious.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"Wouldn't be much of an inspection if an official from your own kingdom came with a warning ahead of time. Kind of defeats the purpose."

"As far as the Gungir forest, that's of a more personal matter. I heard of rare vegetation and fungi within the forest that could be of great aid to my alchemical research and decided to see if the rumors were true. I rather doubt they actually are, but nothing ventured, nothing gained."

Bluff: 1d20 + 30 ⇒ (12) + 30 = 42

Poor guards. They're just trying to do their job. I don't want to create a panic by letting them know what's really going on though.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"We're doing observations on the guard, stock, and general status of every town and city in the area. So far what we have seen is moderately adequate. Keep up the good work gentlemen."

Bluff: 1d20 + 30 ⇒ (10) + 30 = 40

Male Elf Wizard 20

Oh don't patronize them, they already know they're out of their league. He sees Groff getting ready and sighs, intervening. He stands and gives a small bow of respect to the guards. "I apologize for the display of magic without due warning. It shows great initiative that you managed to track down the one who cast it. However I assure you that we are not here to cause any damage, you have my word as a representative of the king of something."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 30 ⇒ (1) + 30 = 31 Blah, the RNG is out to get me today.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Mortimer remains silent, knowing that Fizz can handle himself...ridiculous as he is. However he still touches the invisible Deva's mind. If a fight breaks out, make sure nobody dies.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Mortimer snaps back at them. "I don't know, maybe we should just traipse through the wilderness searching randomly until we all freeze to death." He waits a beat, then shakes his head. "Apologies, I don't deal well with crowds. Too much...thinking in the room."

Male Elf Wizard 20

I have not had such a headache since the time I battled the army of psionics.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Mortimer balks at the assault of noise and smell of alcohol. He sees a table in the back and goes for it. Thank the Eye. He sits with his eyes closed, trying to drown out the noise. Bearded Devil. Lesser major. Known for... Meanwhile his Deva stays invisible next to him, scanning for and protecting him from any potential threats.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Mortimer shivers, cursing in his head in twenty different languages at not being prepared for this situation. "Let's fine someplace we can stay."

Male Elf Wizard 20

There really needs to be a font for sarcasm haha.

Male Elf Wizard 20

I say we walk. Good for the legs!

Honestly I'm kind of lost right now. Been a pretty busy week for me here at school.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Mortimer is miffed at the lack of knowledge given to them, but time has taught him patience. It's so common for others to have to depend on his vast magical power for various problems they are otherwise incapable of dealing with. He supposes that he can let the survivalists take care of him for this environmental issue. If things turn south he can always have the invisible deva at his side plane shift him out.

Male Elf Wizard 20

My Deva can plane shift at will, so if the environment proves too hostile for Groff to keep us alive in then I can just take us all to Mortimer's plane.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"Not prepared."

Male Elf Wizard 20

Auto-succeed all of those knowledge rolls. Mortimer shares all of his information openly.

Mortimer gives the briefest of glares to Ezren. Could have warned us about the cold.

"Oh good, another rift to the fey realm. I imagine we'll be fighting Linnorms soon."

As the two leave, he gets a feeling of nostalgia as the adventurers are left without help from the high leveled bosses. It reminds him of all the times he has sent out adventurers on his own will. So that's what that feels like.

Male Elf Wizard 20

I am enjoying the story, but I understand the point of the game when I applied to it. Regardless, I appreciate the downtime to do things, even if it's "You guys have 2 weeks" or something.

Male Elf Wizard 20

We don't need massive loot drops of big items or anything, it's just some of our battle expenses are incredibly high. One day we will need to cast wish, and we can only do that so many times before becoming flat out broke. I don't think we need more loot, just some gold income.

IMHO, go empower. It's only a hair less powerful than maximize, and depending on how you roll it can actually do more damage, so at the lower spell adjustment it's almost always worth it.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"Thank you. We will be ready for your call." With a wave of his hand and a word, Mortimer vanishes.

The adventures of Mortimer!:
Mortimer returns to his room in the castle, stepping outside. "Lily, could you brew some tea? I've had a long day." He starts a mental timer on when the tea will be ready, then starts writing a letter to the king.

Mortimer mentally checks through his current operations and research while he's writing. He lets himself fade away from the material world, trusting the invisible Deva by his side to confront any threats.

Your majesty,
I have returned. All went well, no
serious expenses or injury occurred
out in the field. I would normally
give you my complete debriefing,
but this is one of those delicate
circumstances we spoke of previously.

If you require anything else of me,
do not hesitate to call on me. The
matter is not entirely resolved so
I may have to depart again with little
to no notice. I apologize for the
inconvenience, but it is of the
utmost importance.

As always, your servant to the kingdom,
Mortimer Talinth

Lily walks in with the cup right as Mortimer folds the letter. "Thank you Lily, would you deliver this letter to the king?" He exchanges the letter for the tea, taking a gentle sip and exhaling. Then as Lily shuts the door he activates the image of himself reading in the room, then teleports down into his underground room and steps into the portal to his plane.

Mortimer returns to work as if nothing has happened. He's been trying to develop what he calls "Stones of Recollection". The idea is to restore spells to a wizard's mind at a moment's notice. He's made significant progress, but he estimates at least eighty years more before he gets a prototype of it out.

At the same time he shuffles through all of the kingdom affairs he is in charge of dealing with, from cataloging retrieved artifacts to handling dangerous prisoners and everything in between.

Lastly, he enjoys the ability to call stronger creatures than he can on the material plane. He spends a few hours debating politics with a pit fiend, arguing semantics with a balor, and tries again to bind a solar but finds his magic is still not strong enough to call such a creature. With the reminder he continues his research into further enhancing the conjuring capability of his plane.

Male Elf Wizard 20

I do hope we start getting loot, because level 20 characters have serious expenses.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"In that case I will reside at my normal location. I'll pass on the teleportation circle, I can get myself there."

Male Elf Wizard 20

I draw my strength from no god. Mortimer nods. "I'm afraid the dear old king will be upset at my temporary leave of duty, but I see little choice in the matter. I could help with some divination magic, but I doubt anything I could come up with would be more powerful than what you have at your disposal. If we are going to be staying for such a long period of time, will we be set up in permanent living quarters?"

Male Elf Wizard 20

Mortimer's Demiplane:
This plane is 2000 square feet of peaceful, bountiful forest filled with massive trees, shady groves, and burbling streams. Animals populate the forest although there are no carnivores. One massive tree in the center of the forest stretches its roots out through the entire plane. There is a building built into the base of the tree where Mortimer resides. The edges of the plane are vine and moss covered cliffs that have waterfalls supplying the area with fresh water.

Gravity is light and subjectively directional to anybody that has an INT score of at least 10. This allows most of the plane to exist as it does on the material plane, but Mortimer and visitors can sort of float around as they need to.

Seasons and daylight pass as normal, but the plane's time moves at twice the speed of the material plane and thus allows Mortimer double the time inside that he gets outside.

Magic is altered here so that conjuration spells are enhanced.

The plane is morphic, so Mortimer can influence the geography as he sees fit.

He has a portal linked back to his room in the castle for the kingdom he works for, well hidden beyond layers of physical and magical protection.

Mortimer comes here to sleep, rest, work, study, and basically do everything that isn't required for him to be on the material plane. The natural foliage and surroundings remind him of his elven home many years ago, and it's a soothing feeling to be able to get away from it all to a place where he is master and is filled with peace.

He comes here to work not only for the double-effective timing of the plane, but also to be able to call more powerful creatures do to the enhanced conjuration magic.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Not like this you haven't. Years of attempting to argue with simple-minded men have taught Mortimer that it's rarely worth the effort.

Just so you know, all condescension is purely in character.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"Donovan, sit down." Mortimer speaks clearly and with authority, hands folded before him. "Do not judge what you do not comprehend."

"We don't even know what's to come, and that's between some of the most brilliant minds in existence. The death of Aroden has changed the very fabric of reality as we know it and is releasing monsters long though dead or gone back into the world. Gods help us if Rovagug gets loose."

Male Elf Wizard 20

Some true wizard shenanigans. I'll be back after my classes with the details. Don't let me interrupt the dinner plans though, for time is not the same on my demiplane.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"Yes, but I find it rude to simply plane shift away from a conversation."

Male Elf Wizard 20

Mortimer looks around the place, taking it all in. I can't believe I've never seen this place before. With a mental flick a journal and pen start floating, taking notes on everything he is seeing.

When the elf comes out Mortimer's curiosity peaks. Truly a powerful figure. At the comment of thoughts beneath the surface he frowns, throwing up his mental barriers. He still remembers when some overconfident apprentice got in there while he was sleeping and ended up babbling like a madman for a week. Although he doubts the oracle could handle the vast information flowing, he knew it could still be very unpleasant.

"Thank you for your hospitality. I look forward to seeing what Mastery Chef Kyamba can produce given adequate time and supplies. While we wait, could I have someplace private? I have some matters to attend to."

DM powers activate. Whoosh.

The only thing more OP than level 20 characters.

Mortimer smiles at Ezren. Try to make them stronger than.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Mortimer looks at the new arrival. Such a nuisance. He raises a hand, shooting a polar ray at it.

Mortimer takes 67 damage.

Dice:

Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34
Confirm: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18
Cold Damage: 20d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 1, 3, 4, 5, 1, 3, 6, 6, 4, 4, 3, 5, 4, 4, 2, 2, 4, 5) = 70
Crit Damage: 20d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1, 2, 1, 4, 1, 2, 4, 6, 3, 6, 6, 6, 2, 3, 6, 5, 2, 4) = 73

Reflex: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19

Male Elf Wizard 20

Honestly, I think the confusion is thematically appropriate. We're not a party that normally works together, we don't know the little habits that a tight knit party would know.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"I sincerely doubt that." Mortimer raises his hand, pointing his palm towards the Sard. "Garmthic di ixen." Four spheres of red energy condense into his hands, then launch down into where the Sard is hiding.

Dice:

Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15
Bludgeoning Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5
Fire Damage: 6d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 3, 4, 5, 5) = 26

Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21
Bludgeoning Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9
Fire Damage: 6d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 3, 3, 5) = 21

Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (12) + 14 = 26
Bludgeoning Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5
Fire Damage: 6d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 3, 4, 1, 2) = 20

Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29
Bludgeoning Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5
Fire Damage: 6d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 6, 4, 6) = 32

Casting meteor swarm. Reflex DC 35 for half damage. If the touch attack hits he gets a -4 on the save.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"Now, to me." Mortimer gathers everybody, then teleports them all to the Sard's location. "There." He points out the tree the Sard is hiding within.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Welp, suppose I'll move things along.

With new spells prepared after some rest, Mortimer awakes and takes out a mirror. "Vorqihk."

Penetrate SR: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (14) + 26 = 40

Male Elf Wizard 20

Casting wish is overkill. We should just wait.

Male Elf Wizard 20
DM Ancient wrote:
Or you could wish all of you to it.

Nothing would stop it from just blending into the trees again.

I could wish that the forest doesn't exist for 24 hours.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Sigh. I still think wish is overkill. But of we're going to use it than I should do it because I have a better chance of affecting it with my spells.

Male Elf Wizard 20

If we're using wish, don't bother wishing for a scry spell. Just wish the sard was trapped and right in front of us.

Male Elf Wizard 20

"I don't think that kind of expense is necessary."

"I know how to scry, but I had not prepared for it today. We would have to wait until tomorrow."

Male Elf Wizard 20

Welp, sorry for raining on your CR24 parade. Things start getting more and more unbalanced the higher the levels go.

Male Elf Wizard 20

Thought you might like dungeongrid ;)

Male Elf Wizard 20

Yes, they increase skill ranks retroactively.

If I'm out of range, I'll double move to get within range then cast it next turn.

I'm also assuming the planetar is intelligent enough and won't betray us, so I'm leaving it to fight however it chooses. However if you don't want to have to worry about handling it in combat, I can run it.

Male Elf Wizard 20

If something has more than 48 SR I would just calmly walk out of the fight.

Male Elf Wizard 20

That's my big daka spell for the day.
