so, i was kind of joking when i said the warrior of the old way was in my top 3 list of my submissions, but then i realized there was a nugget of truth in that... I like all 4 guys I made but I like the pally/bard less than the other 3. He's cool and all, I think I'm just not as excited about a Charismatic dwarf (part of the charm of playing dwarves is getting to be uncharismatic, lol).

i'm not going to withdraw him but i moved him (see below) and transferred the brewmaster's stats into this profile instead. So Morgrim is all set to go again, lol.

I guess at this point I should just give you a list of links for all my submissions...

- Ulfgar Helmhammer- unchained monk/cleric [crusader] of Kols
- Morgrim Ironbeard- fighter [mutation warrior]/investigator (a master brewer who makes magical alcohols extracts and eventually mutagens)
- The Warrior of the Old Way: ranger [wild stalker]/druid (a naturey, sort of totemic warrior who will learn wildshape and rage); if he's selected I'll transfer all his stuff into the Ulfgar alias.
- Charismatic Dwarf: paladin/bard[arcane duelist]; I'll switch Mogrim back if he's selected.

Tonight for dinner I made a giant pot of Mac and cheese loaded with jalapeños and an unreasonable amount of bacon. This thread deserves a fair bit of credit for that. Also, Morgrim the dwarf who would be king is done.

And since you didn't put a cap on me I'm just gonna keep going... Next up is 'the brewmaster' a brewer/distiller who creates all kinds of esoteric brews to augment himself (a mutation warrior fighter/investigator whose alchemy is all alcohol related).

I'm thinking, for a Cha build, a Paladin/Bard... Maybe an archetype on the bard to really limit any overlap with the wizard/bard... Probably Torag or Grundinnar.

I shouted an alarm before attacking, so hopefully some folks have noticed...

it doesn't seem to matter, but my base Fort save is +5 (not +4) and it goes up to +7 against poison (and +9 vs spells/SLAs)

The two expert stabs find their mark and the young dwarf collapses bloody in the street...

-4/13, but not bleeding out...

"ENEMIES WITHIN THE WALLS!!!" Morgrim bellows as he begins moving forward. He advances on the archer, drawing his Dorn Dergar and beginning to spin it as he moves. Rather than attack with it at range though, he steps in close and slams his heavy helmet into the half-orc...

boulder helmet: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18; for: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

I threaten adjacent with my helmet and at 10' with the dorn dergar, so the only way he can fire (or reload, if it is a crossbow) without taking an AoO is to tumble away... feel free to roll that AoO for me if/when it comes up, please

I'm sorry... I'm unclear on the positioning here... we're surrounded, right? How far are each of the enemies from me? How wide is the alley?

"Deep beneath Trunau?!?" Morgrim repeats, "why 'beneath' specifically?"

If someone was tunneling in or out of the burnt church that would explain the lights and lack of tracks... That's an unsettling thought... Could that be what Rodrick uncovered...

"Says here," Morgrim adds, looking up from the journal, "that you tried talkin him outta investigatin 2 days ago... why's that?"

"That's not a bad idea..." Morgrim chimes in, "are there any flags or tapestries you could get hung up, Kurst, to cover the symbols in case they're some kinda symbol?"

Turning his attention back to his companions he adds, "we gotta get movin... We got an appointment to keep..."

the graffiti on the tower is facing out of town?

"That's not good..." Morgrim says out loud without thinking... "they may be using that as a sign for others... letting them know it's time..."

"You're always welcome in my book, kitty" Morgrim teases.

"Good thought, Groin," Morgrim agrees, "let's head up there before we run outta time!

Before he even finishes speaking the short-legged dwarf is plodding off to talk to the patrol lieutenant.

Thanks all. I think I'm probably going to be gone for quite a while, so GMPCing me until I get back is probably not a good option.

Hey everyone... I'm really sorry but I've got some RL stuff going on and I'm going to have to step away from the boards indefinitely... I'll finish up the investigation before I leave (and that should be enough time to find a replacement for me if you wish to do so).

I'm bummed to miss out on running this AP with you all but I hope it goes well.

"I had the same thought... If they were layin the foundation for an invasion there'll be some meanin to which buildings they tagged..." Morgrim agrees, "we've got some time before we need to meet Sara... If half of us go down each side of the street we should have time to walk through town once an' make a list of all the marked buildings then hustle back to Clamor's?"

"Leira," he shouts as she storms off, "meet us at Clamor's when you're done, if you don't get yourself killed leavin the town walls alone..."

Morgrim's jaw drops as his fellow investigators openly discuss things in front of Brinya; by the time Songan gets up to head outside he literally has lowered his head and hidden his face in his hands.

By the gods... I know I'm not the best at dealin with folks but if this is their idea of discretion I shoulda done this alone... why did I even tell them about Sara or Urnsul, or any of it?!?

Once everyone is outside he sighs and says, "Well, that was a clusterf#@k... Listen, we really gotta be careful who we tell stuff and who we talk about stuff in front of! If word gets back to Jagrin before we piece everything together it'll be none too pleasant for us when he catches up with us, and even less so for Kurst..."

He looks at each one gathered in the circle to be certain that they understood. Then, looking around to make sure there was nobody within ear shot he continues, "I think the knife he was killed with is the unfinished blade he had ordered, almost certainly gotten from Urnsul- she was staying with 'some friends' at the Ramblehouse, most likely those half-orcs... I doubt Rodrick ever saw the blade- Urnsul or one of her friends probably crept in with it, killed him while he was out, and then left the blade as if he'd had it all along... As for what he were investigatin, my guess is the white sword grafitti which led him back to those half-orcs, but we won't know that for sure until we find his journal. We don't have but one bell 'til we're supposed to be back at Sara's... we can try to track down Katrezra but we'll have to keep it quick, and maybe not be so quick to divulge things this time..."

each gather info check takes 1d4 hours, so maybe we should go talk to Brinya first? (Otherwise we're looking at a delay of 5-20 hours, and arguably a pretty big lack of discretion...)

@gm- I don't have knowledge local, that's part of the reason I was hustling back to the chapel... in the hopes that one of my fellow investigators knows where to find her...

are you going to 'secretly' roll sense motive checks for us whenever appropriate, as written, or do you want us to make rolls when we're curious?"

"Thanks Sara," Morgrim replies heading out, "I'll see you in two bells." Leaving Clamor's, he hustle's back down to the temple looking for his fellow investigators.

"The fact that my loyalties remain my own, as you say, is a big part of why I'm investigatin..." Morgrim says in a half-mumble, "officially there is no investigation- suicide... case closed... by order of the Patrol Leader... someone close to Rodrick, and with some sway, asked me and a few others to look into things and it turns out that there're some big questions. The knife used to end his life weren't his hopeknife... it mighta been the unfinished one you started... and he didn't make the third cut you're all taught to make..."

Morgrim sighs, knowing he's probably already said more than Kurst would prefer. "I don't think you had anything to do with the knife endin up with him, I didn't even think it was the knife you were makin until you described the blank you turned over... I asked about the smith 'cause now I'm tryin to figure how it got to his deathbed... And, I don't think Brinya did anything wrong but I got reason to think she might know something about where he'd been and what he'd been up to lately. I just wanna ask her if she knows anything that might be useful in figurin out what really happened, that's all."

ooc, I know she didn't know (or, at least, most likely didn't know)- ic, morgrim has average dwarven charisma (an 8) so he's not great with social cues...

"Sara," Morgrim replies with a frown, "you know me, and you know I've never spoken a word against you or your kind. You treat my uncle good and I've got no want to see you or Brinya, or anyone else gettin blame they don't deserve. There's some things about his death that don't add up and we're just tryin to piece it together..."

"Thanks, Sara," Morgrim says preparing to leave, "I'll get outta your hair. Do you have any idea where I might find Brinya Kelvar right now?"

"Sara, I'd just as soon leave you outta this business entirely, I know a lotta folk here don't take kindly to your heritage," Morgrim offers, "but if it comes out later that there were details you were keepin secret it's not gonna look good to those folks... are you sure there's nothin else I should know?"

"The hopeknife he was found with, the one that killed him, was a blank... it wasn't the one from his Vowin, and it definitely wasn't what he ordered- no engravin, not of masterwork... but maybe the unfinished one you're looking for... Is it possible Urnsul's wrapped up in this someway?"

After I talk to Sara I am, in fact, planning to resume looking for Brinya... I assumed the others would catch up either while I'm talking to her or shortly earlier depending on how well my search goes...

"Did he by chance say why he needed a new hopeknife?" Morgrim asks, "It seems like replacin the one from your Vowin would be kind of a big deal? And, if he ordered it himself why that inscription?"

sorry Songan, I missed that- I thought I had found it in that fake drawer for some reason. I still would have asked everyone not to mention it to others until I looked into it, and asked if I could please have it to ask her about it. As for coming along- I left to talk to her before you started examining the body, so my timeline is quite a ways behind yours right now... I should be done talking to Sara and off searching for Brinya by the time you're done with what you have already posted...

Yeah... Songan described himself having the receipt at one point, but Morgrim found it and, having a personal connection with the place, planned on following up himself and wouldn't have given the receipt to anyone else... though he would have shown it to the other investigators, mentioning that Sara faces discrimination for her unfortunate heritage already and it would be wise not to mention it to anyone else until its been looked into

"No, if I ever settle into a forge it won't be the day after a Vowin- all the bangin's too much for my head today..." Morgrim answers with a wry grin, "I actually need to ask you something privately..."

Stepping a bit farther from his uncle and the others, and speaking in hushed tones, he asks, "What's this business about Rodrick getting a new hopeknife?"

Morgrim sets off to find this Brinya Kelver but quickly realizes he doesn't really know where he's going... Instead he heads up to Clamor's...

"Morning uncle," he calls out as he draws near, "is Sara around?"

yeah- I want to post too, but there was such a flurry of information while I was busy at work that I'm having trouble keeping up (even with the summary)...

i'm going to post based on my (ooc) understanding, if I screw something up please point it out and/or correct it...

rereading Songan's posts I think he meant the priestess... I'd like to go see the lover that Kurst told me about earlier when I asked him ;)

wow. One busy day and I find 23 gameplay posts waiting!

As the search begins in earnest, and the initial shot of adrenaline wears off, Morgrim realizes the previous night's festivities had taken more toll than he had noticed... He hauls his sorry hungover ass around finding some clues but failing to connect things until others had... When Songan's mentions speaking with the half-Orc he speaks up, mostly to the priest, "I'll go speak with her now... I have no desire to see the captain's body."

Morgrim grimaces at Songan's continuing interest in examining the body, but decides to focus on the task at hand... He also makes a thorough search of the room.

perception: 20 + 7 = 27

taking 20 takes 2 minutes per square, so I can cover 10 of them- if his room is bigger than that please describe it and I'll pick the necessary squares to not take 20 in.

Morgrim's expression is uncharacteristically soft as he puts a hand on the man's shoulder, "Losin a brother is hard, hard thing... be glad of your father, he's all you've got now and you're all he's got, but at least you've still got each other... that's more than some folk get..."

He stands in silent mourning with the man for a moment then gives him a short nod and, stepping back, asks, "I hate t'lay another burden on you but could you please make sure we can see all the contents of his room before they're taken away?"

"They said he used his hopeknife, you all are supposed to use those things when the option is worse than death, right?" Morgrim asks Leira (and any other locals nearby), "so, who or what could've shown up here last night that would've seemed worse than death?"

Morgrim throws on his chainshirt, grabs his dorn dergar and rushes down to the Ramblehouse. He arrives in time to overhear some nonsense about never trusting shortfolk which he responds to with an unamused glare. Spotting some of the gang from last night, he pushes through the crowd to them and asks, "What happened, what are they saying?"

hand-wave is fine... Morgrim 'retires' with any or all of the women, as their willingness dictates... apparently at his (uncle's) place, per your previous post... feel free to post something about how that works out come morning if you like, lol

"Well..." Morgrim chimes in setting down his forks and standing up, "we're not gonna solve that tonight and, speakin a brokenhearts, there's still one more thing t'see to before the celebrations are complete! If you all want to look for this boy tomorrow, why don't we meet up at the Ramblehouse after breakfast?"

He pauses for a moment for nods or objections, then adds, "Now, unless either of you two ladies are interested in some fine dwarven sausage for dessert, I need to go find someone interested in giving the champion of the hammer throw one more test of stamina!" He smirks as if joking when he makes his offer to Leira and Delia, by waits briefly for a response none the less...

Assuming they're not interested, He heads back towards the densest parts of the crowd in search of a willing young woman or two who would like to celebrate with one of the victors... preferably a human or half-orc... we're all the same on the inside and I'm not ready for another mouth to feed... let's see, what have we here...

Morgrim seems blissfully unaware that he is participating in any manner of competition, though he is certainly giving the large young man a run for his money.

He seems fairlyt disinterested in talk of graffiti and compasses (at least as they compare to food), but does seem somewhat engaged when talk turns to the missing boy...

Morgrim quietly settles into some serious eating. He listens to the others talking as the food and his hardy dwarven system quickly work him back towards sobriety. He periodically takes large gulps of his drink, to make sure its not too quickly.

"Почему все ..." Morgrim begins, then with a wry grin and some concentration he says, "why's e'eryone tryin t'order beef? I ass'd her t'bring it all a'ready... with bread 'n cheese 'n fish fer kitty..."

That sucks. A guy I know at work had that happen to him… He said it was a slow process but it has become so common that it wasn't very difficult. That was his experience…YMMV

Despite his inebriation, he seems amazingly steady on his feet as he follows the young women (it must be easier to balance on those short legs).

also, maybe you should swap a language for dwarven so Leira will understand him too!

I don't know if anyone cares, but for the sake of immersion I typically use actual other languages for my characters when they're not speaking common (just cut and paste from google translator). For this character the only relevant information is that I use Russian for Dwarven (in case you want to follow suit) but I have a whole list I keep that's pretty consistent across all the PbPs I'm in if anyone wants suggestions for other languages they might want to do that for...
