Totally agree.

Anyone can learn the rules, but you can't learn enthusiasm.

Assist him by pointing out particular portions of the core rulebook that he should read. Ask him to be your GM assistant for a few sessions. He can be responsible for learning all of the rules and being the go-to guy regarding "XYZ", where "XYZ" are the rules that you feel are the most important, or where his knowledge appears to be the weakest.

In short, encourage and support him, don't shoot him down. We're a small enough hobby that every extra player and GM makes a difference. And who knows, in twenty years time, you may both look back at his start and laugh about his lack of rules knowledge when he first started, but also appreciate the twenty good years of gaming that you've had together.

I'm throwing a curve ball at my kingmaker players with this one. The troll they fear in the woods has been mostly "digested" by a Jaws-sized Tuskgutter. One of the hunters will find about three-quarters of the head of the troll; except the regenerative capacity is not strong enough to regrow the rest of the troll, but it is enough to keep the troll "alive" as it were. A misshapen tooth is very slowly growing, curving out of an eye socket while the other eye is glazed over but looks at any sudden movement near it. There is no jaw, tongue or throat left to speak of except for abnormal growth and decay where the spinal column would have been.

So yeah, a different spin on what happens to a decapitated troll. Can't wait to spring this one on my players.

The upside of the Great Northern is the possibility of lunch in the beer garden:

"Currently as part of our outstanding steak special, prime rump and sirloin are available Sunday to Thursday for only $11.90, including full salad bar!".

So I'd be tempted to suggest a noon meeting; the lunch trade wraps at 3...

I used to live next door to the Great Northern! Made for easy drinking and lunch.

All these Lower Nth Shore gamers, have to admit I'm surprised.

I'd buy it in PDF or print (and possibly both). I enjoy reading anything that helps improve my "craft" as a DM.
