Looking displeased at all the ruckus, Lucien responds to Jerax. "Our main priority is still to hunt down this Angel Knight and any accomplices. Gathering information around the docks and taverns sounds like a reasonable approach. He rises and straightens his robes. "We should also keep a close watch on the unruly occupant of the stocks. Attempting to free Bolgart from his punishment would be just the sort of anti-authoritarian activity that these rebellious sorts might engage in. And while we're at it, I'm curious to learn what sort of tune that minstrel is so furiously scribbling over there. Perhaps we can persuade him to give us a private performance prior to any public premiere."

Visibly annoyed by the ongoing squabble, Lucien takes a deep breath and adopts a somewhat pleasant smile, then rises to address the departing woman. "You know, if you wish your establishment to reflect a certain level of class, we are the exact crowd you want to attract. As the Baron's sworn deputies, our patronage is a reflection of his good standing. On the other hand, you have only to look outside the prison to see the result of disrespect towards his Lordship and his servants." Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15 Looks like Lucien is not very diplomatic when he's hungry. Leaning in closely to the restrained barkeep, Lucien puts a hand on the injury he just healed and says in a perfectly calm and civil tone: ”Of course, mr. Bolgart. The terms of your punishment were quite specific and did not say anything about inflicting any bleeding wounds on your person. You are simply to be confined to the stocks as a reminder to all the law-abiding citizens of Longacre to respect their leige lord. “ The cleric pauses, moves as if to turn away, then looks Bolgart straight in the eyes. ”However, the Archbaron left the lenght of your sentence entirely up to our discretion. So, every time you feel another one of your colorful comments coming along, think very hard if it is worth the extra hour before uttering it out loud.”

"It seem like Cimri has a little trouble adjusting her temperament to our newfound roles and responsibilities. While a little extra discipline may be called for on occasion, it does present some problematic optics if our prisoner here spends his day in the stocks with a fresh stab wound acquired while in our care. Here, this should remedy the situation." Lucien raises his holy symbol, utters some infernal phases and lays a hand on their captive, temporarily granting him a devil's accelerated healing. Within a minute, only a faint trace of the injury remains. Spending an Infernal healing to patch him up.

"Take him away!" Lucien says in a satisfied tone, shooting the few remaining occupants of the inn a haughty look. Once en route to the stocks, he remarks to the rest of the group. Having allowed the more rowdy members of the group to take the lead for the shock effect, Lucien makes a more composed entrance. He strides forward, his heavy mace still hanging from his belt, but his unholy symbol clearly on display. "Innkeeper Caggan, you once again appear to be under the unfortunate misconception that this is a matter of debate. Let me make it abundantly clear that it is not. You have been given a direct command by representatives of your lawful lord, both in writing and verbally, which you have chosen to disobey. Our presence here and your subsequent punishment is merely the natural consequence of that choice." He scans the hostile crowd. "Now, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. Lucien is caught off guard by the sight of the devil, but not terribly surprised. It is well known that nobles of Cheliax often have infernal advisors. While Razelago speaks, he recalls his planar studies to determine exactly what kind of infernal creature they are dealing with Knowledge (planes): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 "Indeed, we will make sure that Bolgart is apprehended and punished for his transgressions in accordance with the law, neither more nor less. We have already practiced showing restraint in the various encounters we had while distributing the edict notices, so I am certain we will be able to apply just the right amount of force to convey a clear message to other would-be dissidents."

Fully aware that binding contracts and magically enforced oaths are an inescapable fact of life in Cheliax, Lucien steps up and repeats the process. “I swear my absolute allegiance to Archbaron Darellus Fex, Her Infernal Majestrix Queen Abrogail II of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune, and the Empire of Cheliax." he swears, doing his best to keep his voice and expression unaffected by the burning.

" I suggest we begin by keeping close, cover surveillance on the head priestess and her associates. If they are working with this Angel knight, they are bound to contact them somehow." Lucien muses. After a moment, he adds: "Another option could be to provoke a response and flush the Angel Knight out in the open. In my experience, those who claim to fight for the so-called oppressed rarely have the discipline to sit idly by in the face of Asmodean justice. A few public displays of enforcing the new edicts should suffice." He turns to face his companions. "What do you all say? Which option is more to your liking?"

Unspoken words from a readied spell fading from his lips. ”Well, that’s mission accomplished, I suppose. I must admit, I’m surprised we managed it without resorting to violence, given all the hot tempers in this town.” He bends and grabs one of the discarded sashes from the floor. ”Speaking of which, the Archbaron will have a hell of the time maintaining order in this town without sheriff or deputies. As per the previous Profession (barrister) roll, Lucien is careful to frame his answers so they are in accordance with the laws of Cheliax and the specific decrees from the Archbaron. "Well, Doctor Rohalendi, I'm afraid that in these troubling times, with violent religious fanatics roaming the countryside and threatening the lawful rule of our proud nation and the peace of this town, outside visitors may have to accept certain inconveniences in the sake of security. As for the taverns, any employees of sanctioned businesses are of course permitted to be on the premises. But again, the same caution applies as before. Any attempt to abuse this to circumvent the law will be severely punished." While speaking, Lucien carefully studies both Rohalendi and the surrounding crowd to get a read on their motivations and reactions. Sense Motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 Sensing that continuing this discussion in front of a large gathering is not in the groups best interest, he aims to isolate the inquisitive stranger. "Now, I'm terribly sorry, but we have more of these decrees to post throughout the town, and really must carry on with our official duties. If you wish to apply for an permit to conduct your business as a healer after curfew, we can escort you to the office of the notary. Any further questions you might have can be answered there."

Lucien takes a moment to carefully study and contemplate the legal text of the decree before adding his answer to the discussion. "The decree is quite clear on this. From the hour after dusk to the hour before dawn, no citizen of Longacre is allowed upon the town’s streets without a writ of exception bearing the seal of House Fex. The archbaron’s agents and sanctioned local businesses are exempt from this order. Those seeking a writ of exception may apply at the Longacre Notary. So, anyone experiencing a medical emergency should seek out the notary for a writ of exemption. In addition, as a healer I would expect that you yourself will qualify for such an exemption and be permitted to make house calls." he says with perfect civility before adding. "Of course, anyone feigning illness as an excuse to visit an outlawed temple or attend a religious gathering will have to answer to the proper authorities and faces the consequences of their deceit. But I'm certain that won't be relevant for you or your patients, doctor...?" he adds, framing the last word as a question to prompt an introduction from the black-clad bystander. In any event, it’s not our place to question our lawful liege.”

Especially since our companions are not back from their carousing yet." He steps up and examines the rubble, then reaches into his satchel to withdraw a small, slender form he has previously kept hidden from the others. "You have your loyal companion, I have mine. "We certainly have not seen the last of this. Even in a remote place like this, such a direct challenge against both the church of Asmodeus and House Thrune by association is outrageous. The Iomedaeans certainly would not dare make such a move unless they felt certain they had someone powerful backing them. Alright...let's see if this angel-lover is up for a bit of a religious throw-down. *flexes infernal lawyer skills* While the Iomedean priestess delivers her inflammatory sermon, Lucien stands silently at the back of the crowd near the merchant stalls, his face a motionless mask while his analytical mind absorbs and evaluates every word spoken. Before Sword Knight Allamar can enter the church, he springs onto a barrel and calls out to her in a loud, authoritative voice. His sash and holy symbol clearly displayed leaves little doubt about who it is that challenges the Iomedean. "Hold there, honorable Allamar! Do not leave your congregation so bewildered...for your words leave many questions floating in the wind, demanding answers." Lucien pauses for a brief moment, giving the crowd time to turn and see who is speaking. He smiles warmly, arms held wide and weapons safely holstered. When he speaks again, his words drip with civility and decorum so thick you could cut it with a dull dagger. "Pardon my slow wit, but I could not help but interpret some of your sermon as an incitement of insurrection against our rightful ruler, her Infernal Majestrix, and a challenge of the dominion of Asmodeus over our Glorious nation. But surely, no loyal citizen of Cheliax would ever suggest such a shameful and illegal act, so I must be mistaken..." he continues in a plaintive tone. "After all, worship of Iomedae is already freely permitted here, as evident by your own church...on condition, of course, of the proper respect and acknowledgment of the dominion of our Dark Lord Asmodeus. For let us never forget that it was He who delivered us from anguish in our darkest time, when the broken promises of other Gods left our ancestors suffering under turmoil and despair." The Asmodean Advocate turns his focus to the crowd, fully aware that he will never sway the zealots among the Inheritors faithful, but that many of the onlookers can be persuaded by fear or civic pride. "Yes, we have suffered much, endured hardship and known betrayal. But never has our lord Asmodeus broken his promise to reward all those who are loyal to the Infernal compact that was the deliverance from chaos and grief. None know this better than the proud veterans of our military, some of which have fought alongside the devils he sends to slay our enemies. Only those who break the oath they have sworn need fear the just retribution such dishonor rightfully warrants...!" I do not know this Knight-Inheritor Visserene, nor the so-called "Angel knight" she speaks of...Perhaps she is confused and thinks that Longacre is in Andoran, not Cheliax...but I do know that it will take more than an inflammatory letter and a shiny trinket to make any loyal son or daughter of Cheliax forget their duty." He pauses, giving the Iomedean a chance to respond and hopefully further incriminate herself. Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24 |
