Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

"Let's try that again. Hold still now." Lona reloads and fires another bolt, hoping for better results this time.

Attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 1
Sneak Attack Damage 1d6 ⇒ 4

Lona throws down the crossbow in frustration and curses in a most unladylike manner. "What a piece of junk!" She draws her rapier and inches (5' step) closer to the creatures.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona positions herself about 30' out and fires a crossbow bolt at one of the creatures!

Attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 3
Sneak Attack Damage 1d6 ⇒ 2

Oops.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Lona readies her bow and readies an arrow, awaiting a signal from the group before firing. "Want me to try to get closer?"

Back from traveling. Thanks for your patience.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona hands the finely crafted weapon to Praxim reluctantly, although she's unsure whether it's because of giving up of the weapon or the fact that Praxim had offered to be so nice...again!

She follows Praxim to the north door, searching it for anything unusual as she closes in, and opens it.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

"No!" Lona responds instinctively as her grip on the weapon tightens. "This is a good weapon. It could come in handy." She tries resting the weapon on her shoulder as she moves to continue on with the weapon in hand, even though it clearly inconveniences her movement somewhat.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Sorry, Lona just thought they were so...real!

Lona swings the ranseur about. While she manages, the weight of it causes her to sweat in exertion. Eventually, she strikes the ground with the butt of the haft and sighs. "This weapon is too weighty for my taste." She looks to the burly men among the group. "Any of you mind carrying this while we explore?"

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

"Pretty!" Lona says aloud as she studies the statue.

Perception to detect traps. 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17

After checking the statue and the nearby area to make sure they are free of traps, she starts with the ranseur, and proceeds to relieve the statue of her burdens. "Look at the quality of these..."

In order: ranseru, book, headdress, robe

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona perks up at the change in environment, and sneaks into the room to take a look about.

Stealth 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

I don't have Knowledge:Dungeoneering either.

Lona finishes her search and shrugs her shoulders. "Nothing here. Not sure if this creature is native here or a comrade of the goblins. Either way, I'm sure glad we took care of it."

"Let's move on here. May be we'll find something more interesting further in." She looks back at the corpse. Frankly, she's not sure if she wants to see any creature more "interesting" than the one they just encountered.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

I'll take 20 on the body and the room for goodies (that's a result of 30). If I can't then:

Perception body 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Perception room goodies 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17

Here's the trap search (extra bonus from the level of rogue):
Perception traps 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona pats the backs of the burly men of the party as she congratulates them on a job well done, and proceeds to do a thorough search of the body and the room for traps and goodies.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

With the group crowding the creature and blocking her path, Lona contents herself guarding their back and keeping an eye on the fight, lest another hostile creature comes upon them unawares.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

"Perhaps we'd be better served to have the creature come to us, where there is more...ah, nevermind," Lona calls out. With only one ally in the way, and Markum at that, Lona decides to let the arrow fly anyway.

Attack into melee (-4, included) 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 8

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

As Lona begins taking her first steps to the left, she sees Markum move to the right. Why am I not surprised, Lona thought to herself with a sigh and a shake of her head. She gestures for Lym to follow her as she heads over in Markum's direction so that they can investigate the cave together.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona is a left-to-right kinda gal, and would opt to go left. However, she senses there are some rather strong-willed men leading the group around. So, instead, she busies herself searching for traps as they move along.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona looks about, wondering where all the goblins went.

Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

"Why is Markum always so eager to run off on his own? Does he think he's a one man party or something?" Lona mumbles to herself as she looks about, and realizes she can't see anything!

"Hey, does anyone have a light source?"

I'm open to either direction. I'm just generally a left to right kind of person, which was the only reason I pointed left. If Markum really wants to go off on his own and this is his way of telling us that, so be it. I can go left or right. I'd go right since Markum is leading us that way instead, but will go left if Markum really wants to be alone for a while.

Lona has nothing to light the way. Anyone have something to help light the way? We may need two if Markum had one and took it with him.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona looks quickly down both branches, and points to the left one.

What lights up each branch? Will we need to supply our own light source to be able to see?

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

That is fine, since Praxim is working in a similar snails pace with his detect evil.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

As the group proceeds, Lona devotes her attention to looking for concealed/secret doors and traps.

During exploration, how much does such exploration slow the pace down by? Lona's +10 for general perception and +11 for trap perception, so take Ten is 20 and 21, respectively.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Oh, no need. Lona's got sacks, backpack and belt pouches. What she needs are the Handy Haversacks and the Bags of Holding :)

Varg Proudheart wrote:
Are there, in this group, any grab-everything-that-isn't-nailed-down-to-pawn-it-off types?

Lona is a packrat as well, in case you haven't noticed. She is rather sad about her inability to carry more goodies, and will be looking for a backpack or a bag to help with the problem down the road. As for the bow, Lona had conveniently forgot to return the shortbow the noble loaned her for the hunt. I'm sure Aldern was happy she wanted something to remember him by anyways.

Lym, don't forget to mark down you have the potion of CLW. Lona took it off her list already.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Sure! Lona likes Lym, who is simply cool, unlike that paladin, who Lona thinks may have been trying to be cool (don't worry Praxim, Lona will eventually accept you as part of the group. Eventually. I think.) :)

I'll take it off my list. Be sure to add it to your equipment list somewhere.

I am also assuming someone grabbed the bow and arrows (it is a nice +1 bow - surely we have someone with STR 12 or better). You all work it out. Lona is kind of tired of carrying those as well.

She's still wearing the earrings and the ring, though.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

And divvying up the "gold-ish" stuff (liquid gold, as I like to call it) is meaningless until we get to someplace where we can do something with it. The group who was at the glassworks place when Lona returned would have been aware of the stuff she took out to look over. That includes the composite shortbow, which Lona couldn't fully pull and didn't care much for as a result. She's wearing the earrings and the ring right now (because she's a woman and a rogue).

And, yes, when we return (or if we want to delay entering the tunnel, which I am assuming everyone is eager to get into right now), we can head to a merchant Lona knows well (she's lived here a while and should have a regular merchant or two by now that she deals with regularly) and sell the undesired goods for gold to divide up.

Thus, as I have it (possibly usable goods):
Bow + 19 Arrows in the quiver (no one claimed it - in Lona's possession but free to a good home)
Earrings and Ring (Lona's wearing it - you'll make her pout if you ask for it, but she MIGHT consider letting you wear it instead)
Potion (Lym's holding it)

There is a mw thieve's kit, but no one has shown a propensity for thievery here, so Lona is holding on to it (Lym does know of its existence if she recognizes it for what it is - she knows what all Lona found, if she was paying attention at the time). We'll likely fence it to get more gold.

I suspect we're light on equipment for L2. Hopefully we'll get to a balancing point in time (otherwise encounters at CR above us will become a bear). We'll have to put up with the paladin's superiorness a while longer, it seems...

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

As she does, she leaves the potion with Lym, for anyone who may be want to hold on to it. She takes back the ring and puts it back on her finger.

The potion should probably go on Lym, since she should try to stay out of melee, making her (hopefully) the least likely to go down. That way, she can heal any healers that go down to traps or combat. As for the ring, Lona is a vain *cough* rogue *cough*, and will unceremoniously wear that ring until we figure out what it does exactly.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona's brows furrow as she tries to recollect anything of use to add to Lym's information.

Know: Local 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona tries the ring and the earrings on herself, and decides they match her outfit well enough.

Come morning (assuming the evening goes uneventfully), Lona greets Lym as she joins the group. She hands Lym the ring to play with while whispering to her, "I'm so glad you're here. Frankly, that Praxim is driving me a little batty with his nice guy attitude."

Then, louder to the group with a smile, "so, are we ready for a bit of exploration today?"

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

After careful study of the goods, Lona deduces the values of the items as follows:

composite shortbow (appraisal 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20)
silver ring(magic) (appraisal 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17)
silver earrings (appraisal 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15)
potion(magic) (appraisal 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26)
mw flute (appraisal 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22)
12 pouches of gold dust (appraisal 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26)
6 pouches of silver dust (appraisal 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7)
(assumed) 1 quiver of arrows (19)(appraisal 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14)

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Time to figure out how appraise works. It looks like the appraise skill can be used untrained now, too (but we'll use Lona's +6 trained appraise check unless someone has a better bonus there).

With the place searched and secured, Lona gathers everyone and pulls out the following items from her backpack.

From the half-elf - things to appraise
composite shortbow
silver ring(magic)
silver earrings
potion(magic)
mw flute
12 pouches of gold dust
6 pouches of silver dust
(assumed) 1 quiver of arrows (19)

Marcum gestures in some strange fashion, and the ring and the potion radiates slightly in response. Armed with the knowledge, Lona takes the time to study the items (appraising, +6 trained appraisal check)

The omitted items from the list do not need to be appraised/identified. I just listed the items that will need appraisal. This assumes the mw thieve's tools is similar in quality to the set Lona is...er..."familiar" with.

Should I go ahead and roll for these, or do you want to roll them in secret?

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Hmm, Lona was mostly wondering about the silver ring and earrings and the gold and silver dust pouches. You bring up a good point, though. They may be magical, and we should probably detect magic and identify and appraise them ourselves first. Lona will skip the visit to the merchant for now then.

"A little bit of guilt won't hurt that headstrong fool. I suppose we'll meet up with them there then. Why don't we scatter to grab any gear you need to pick up or purchase, and meet up there whenever you get there at the building." Quite happy with her little idea, she runs out and heads over to the building to find Varg and Markum, and search through the various rooms with them, asking them to go with her back over any rooms they may have explored that she has not seen yet.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

With Ameiko safe at home, Lona heads over to her favorite local merchant to appraise the various goods taken from the body of the half-elf.

The list can be found in Lona's profile under Equipment - Temporary under the appropriate subheading.

With the business concluded, she returns to the tavern to meet up with the group. "I was thinking we can meet back up at the building and rest there for the night before exploring the tunnels. That way, we can keep an eye on that tunnel as we rest with everyone available to help defend against anything that might come through. Hey, where's Varg and Markum?"

Mr. DM, if we want to buy gear or equipment, what is available for sale here, and does some sort of discount from recognition still apply?

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

"Ameiko, calm down. We're here, and we can help you find your father. There's no need to rush ahead like that, when we don't know what else may be here in this building." Lona tries to stall her for a moment.

Passing her over to Lym and Varg (figuratively speaking, of course), she races back to the stairs leading down to the basement. "Markum, elf-guy! We need you up here. We're going to try to finish scouting the place NOW before Ameiko goes mad!" She races back to Ameiko and the group and pauses to catch her breath.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona anticipates they - Varg, Lym and Lona - will see Ameiko to relative safety and head back to join the others.

Lona will suggest they finish scouting out the place, and rest there for the night (makes guarding the tunnel easier) before heading in to explore. Assuming they have time, it shouldn't be too difficult for everyone to have turns restocking equipment in waves (say, always two on guard - doesn't really have to be played out since we're just grabbing gear and returning) after the scouting is done.

Just let us know where you want the story to pick back up - I would suggest Ameika safe and near home and the party back together in the basement. From here, we can continue scouting the place.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona takes one quick look at the room with the tunnel. "Surely that tunnel can wait a bit longer."

Lona races after the group heading upstairs as she tries to tuck the journal into her backpack. "Varg, Lym, wait for me!"

Are there any unexplored rooms left on the first floor? And, is there a second floor?

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona nods and gives Praxim a silent and reluctant approval at his move. There is a need to find the tunnels, or at the least secure this building and free it of any other hostile residents. She motions to Lym to try to send the girl to safety so that they can finish scouring the building as a group.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona sticks her tongue out and makes a face at Praxim, until she realizes that she's not hitting any more accurately than she was before! The horror of it shows on her face as she realizes that she may have to use...nay, even ask, that haughty snooty paladin to shield her from harm!

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona's face goes through an exercise of contortions as countless different expressions make their appearance and fade while she reads the journal. On finishing, she looks up and exclaims, "What madness is this!"

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Feeling a bit awkward, Lona looks to Lym to see if she'll respond, or if Lona will have to step forth and break the bad news to her.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

"Oh, Lym, don't fret about it overly much. That Markum and Vuvo are way too eager to get into the thick of it, if you ask me. I'm just mad this half-elf didn't do anything to put us mixed races in better light. We have a hard enough time fitting in as it is. I really don't need him lousing up a reputation I may have to live up to."

Waving her hand, as if to wave the problem away, she continues. "Let's hide this one somewhere where casual folks won't come across him and rejoin the group. Who knows what rash actions they'll take next without us there to keep them in check. Here, let's drag this body down by where the half-elf was. That may be far enough in to keep the nosy folks from finding him."

With Lym's help (hopefully), they drag the live goblin down to by the half-elf, before rejoining the rest of the group by Ameiko.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona nods at Lym and gestures for her to follow as she heads back up to the room where they left the tied and gagged goblin. Once there, she waits for Lym to join her before deciding on the fate of the bound goblin.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

A long lifer! Lona thinks to herself as she studies the elf. "We are indeed, here investigating strange goblin activities. Are you here to hinder or to help?" Lona responds carefully. "Varg! Markum! We've got company!" Her hand reaches for the rapier, preparing herself for the worst.

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

Lona quickly stashes all the items found on the body into her backpack and the pouches, slings the bow on her shoulder and the arrows and her own crossbow on her back. She keeps the journal in her hand, and is back to reading it as the footsteps approach. She feels her heartbeat pounding hard and furious, and tries to calm herself down as she resumes scanning through the journal. Calm down, Lona, calm down. We didn't mean to kill him. We didn't even kill him. He killed himself resisting arrest.

Don't worry folks. Lona shares. We'll sort through the goodies when we have some privacy. For now, let's figure out what to do with the one dead person and one dying person here.

Edited to add: I assume he also had a quiver of arrows to go with that shortbow.

Hey, I resent that! I was just about to say much the same thing! Minus the chauvinistic comment.

"Markum, stop! We're here to help the innocent, remember!"

That said, Varg DOES still keep hold of his sword, as he chases Markum, just in case it's NOT one of the innocent.

...which might fit Lona's view of men.

Somewhere in the deep recesses of Lona's subconscious...she grins.

Lona quickly opens the journal and starts to scan the entries, hoping to find clues that point to what is happening here in this place and in town.

Welcome to the game Praxim. That means I'm no longer the young humanoid on the block! Ooh, and you're level 2. Could this mean...

Lona is dancing with anticipation that she can soon do rogue'ish things in a more rogue'ish manner.

The fact, my dear, that I am level 2 is simply a reflection of my superior-to-you nature, but fear not, as the superior hero, it is my sworn duty to protect you and all other weaker innocents from harm. Rejoice, for Praxim will soon be here. All fiendish monsters and stuck pickle jars shall fear my coming.

Being the greedy rogue that Lona is, she would like to remind the DM that the current group is light on equipment and levels compared to that self-righteous man looking to join us right now :)

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

[bold]"Quick, is he still breathing?"[/bold] Lona checks on him while removing his weapons in case he's revived. She also looks for signets and papers and notes that may help them understand what is going on here.

Attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 4

Female Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Rogue 1

As everyone else works to subdue the half-elf, Lona walks up to him and slaps him. "You are giving the rest of us a bad name! What's the big idea hurting the dog and giving up AFTER that? Next time, give up first, or go down fighting. Who are you? What are you doing here? For your sake, I sure hope you have a good explanation why you're here with a den of goblins." She picks up the bow and does a thorough searh of the half-elf, relieving him of all his weapons and making a mental note of any valuables he has.

Retrieving missed bolts (2). 1=destroyed. 2=retrieved.

I would, but I did get the mother of all initiatives :)

Lona takes aim and unloads on the half-elf, even as she feels a pang of guilt from the attack.

Damage 1d8 ⇒ 7
