As a future RP-Evil I hope the devs do not make it impossible for me and my guild to play the way we want to. On the other hand I will be right there with the Good players in killing anyone who is griefing noobs.

If the initial rules make it too tough on evil I expect they will be modified. I can just see it now various good aligned guilds lining up or fighting for the opportunity to fight a few "evil" guilds. While I plan on playing good aligned characters for the most part (if needed I may add and "evil" character) I think that the "evil" characters and organizations will be important for the success of the game.

The challenge is as you note to differentiate between game enhancing conduct and that which adversely affects the game.

An alternative to clan might be "company". That would cover everything from merchant and crafting to fighting (i.e. organizations like the historical White Company or the fictional Black Company). It would even allow inclusion of others if those in charge thought there was sufficient reason. Later on whole clans could be accepted into the company if it grows enough.

One question I haven't seen answered is whether or not a character will be restricted to a single guild.

Take a look at the land rush poll then read the recruitment pages of the largest guilds. If one is careful where one goes I suspect there will be little to fear when you combine this with everything else.

I took this as a rather astute but of roll playing that incidentally looks like it may address a serious issue. First of all since we are looking at over a year before the game opens up and some considerable time after that before there can be wars between settlements what else could it be?

Let's take a look at the land rush poll as Andius suggested though.
http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2paon?Poll-Kickstarter-Land-Rush-Leaderboard
I see only 9 guilds with more than 10 votes (looks like ~10% of the backers eligible to vote have done joined guilds and done so) of those the top 5 are all pretty much guild aligned and have text on their recruitment pages that either states explicitly or suggest they are willing to help those outside their guilds and/or will fight evil. Of the remaining 4 2 are good aligned and one aggressively so. One of the others doesn't have a recruitment page and the other allows 5 alignments 3 good, 1 neutral, and 1 evil and goes on to say that evil acts will not be permitted in their territory. Now the numbers are likely to change over time but there's a pretty strong trend established.

Now look at the psychology of those that play evil characters. How many really want to be a minor cog in a large organization? On the other hand a lot of those who want to primarily craft or gather resources are content to be members of a good or at least neutral organization. I suspect we are going to see a dearth of powerful evil guilds. If one arises it's more likely to be an alliance of such guilds.

If we are to have massed battles and wars however it would be nice to see such organizations so getting a start on one now makes sense.

I will say I have seen some very well done recruitment pages by guilds that shall we say are on the shady side.

Indeed the point was to fund the project. In some ways the pressure has really been ramped up on you folks at Goblinworks. While I'd like to know what is going to happen right now decisions made at this point are unlikely to be as good as those made after due consideration. That old saying "Make haste slowly" has considerable merit.

With the tech demo they allowed those who had joined the kickstarter to increase their pledge for additional rewards. I believe this also was considered for stretch goals. If that was the case all the kickstarters could benefit if stretch goals are reached and as we came up just short that would seem to have a very good chance of happening. For instance allowing one to purchase the subscriptions could be considered another benefit of the kick starter participation as well.
