The large orc gives a look to Rienas, sharing the sentiment. The children receive his attention again, three strides bringing him close enough to sit on his heels and bring them somewhat close to their level. "You have fire. I saw it when you beat on him", a head gesture was given to the half-orc. "If you want to learn to use that, talk to me after." An almost intimidating look was given to the group, noting the ones that kept their gaze up before nodding in approval. Standing easily, he turned to look at the hole down with a predatory grin. Lamm was about out of places to run.
A grunt of acknowledgement followed that observation as he went up the stairs to retrieve his hammer. He did watch the kids that were venting their anger on the beaten half-orc with a bit of amusement, and nodded in approval. "A bigger rat to drown", he agreed, looking for doors that they had not yet explored. "Where is he?"
The rush from healing felt good as he stood, now certain that this giggling flunky had to be broken. The maul was left where it was as a tool to stand up and rushed them, getting one hand on the arm with the flail, and the other on their vest. Their anger was on the edge, and it was being used to focus.
The grin that was on his face probably did not look as pleasant as he thought it did. Everyone always thought the maul was the concern. One hand was kept low as a fist swung out at the flail wielder, tucked in against the potential swing, then the positions changed as the action was repeated, the other hand lashing out in an attack aiming for their eyes.
Morganne wrote: Morganne flinches a bit when Laijiri brings his maul down on the two helpless men. "You could have at least kept one of them alive for questioning." There was a pause as the scarred and slightly blistered Orc tilted his head in consideration of their words and shrugged. "Lamm is here. Living enemies stab you in the back." The burned and ruined shirt that he had been wearing was pulled off, the scraps used to wrap his now un-blistered hands.
His hands empty, Laijiri reached back to pick up the maul that he had dropped to put out the fire. The gnome had slipped free, but escape was not going to happen. Heavy strides brought him close enough to swing the maul, assuring the end of both the gnome and the alchemist.
The hammer had to be dropped to get the burning stuff off. At least it was not hard to remove. The small one that attacked Nox was next. One large hand swung out to grab the closest part of them as he stepped into the room, and an elbow was as good as anything. His intent was as plain as day. "Don't run", he growled with a look that promised murder.
Another dog. The maul would have been easier, but they were not the goal. Frustrated, a kick was sent at the dog in the way, and then another when that did not seem to move it.
Approaching the door methodically, he could at least recognize and respect the loyalty of the animals. Which was why instead of bringing the maul down as he took a step forward, a heavy stomp was aimed at the closest dog, followed by a kick.
Striding forward, Laijiri's steps were heavy as he approached the door and only one word was heard as the maul was readied. "Move." The swing came down, not at the door handle, but where the hinges would have been, intending to take the door off the wall. The red was saved for those inside.
'Let's begin.' He thought with a sense of coming satisfaction that he had been waiting for. As the idiot turns to close the door, there was the sound of the slide of a hand along the handle of the maul, the slide and heavier sound of his foot starting the motion, and a bit of a grunt as he added power to the upswing, the arc intending to make contact with middle of their torso. This door and the soon to be dead man's eyes were going to stay open.
While the others talk, Laijiri had not moved his focus from the door, his impatience growing the more the others decide to sit and talk rather than act. Along the way he had picked up a large maul, and carried its weight effortlessly. Right now, he was like a coiling spring, and a growl warned them that he was tiring of waiting. Payback was inside that old fishery, and he was going to wreck the whole thing, if he had to. "Done talking?" he growled between clenched teeth.
"Lamm is suspicious." The orc growled in response to the cautious plan. "We don't give him time to run." So far, it seemed that he was keeping a hold on his temper, but he seemed to be angry by default, and the look on his face promised darkness to the one it focused on. Just the thought of getting a hand around Lamm's neck was fuel, so close he could almost feel it. The grin that Rienas got was a bit intimidating, giving him his attention. "Let's go." A large hand was raised, flexing it into a meaty fist and releasing it. The rumble of a sentence that was nearly a growl came as he stood, deference shown to Zellara.
Card: 1d9 ⇒ 2 Not as fast as the Gnome to reach the first card, Laijiri took the next, careful to not damage it inadvertently, as the ire of a fortune teller is not something he wanted. Looking at the image, his eyes narrowed at what was presented, not sure if it was meant to go with the card that they left for him, or not. He was doing his best to keep his behavior calm, which was difficult now that he had a location. The majority of his money went to finding out where that man was, and all of them had nothing to report. Now... Now the time had come. His voice was somewhere between a rumble and a growl, and the ring of finality made his intent viciously clear. "He will be broken before the sun rises."
"Laijiri"[b], came his response, emphasis on the middle syllables, understanding more of who and what she was as she shuffled the cards. A cautious respect was evident. He had eaten a bite of bread— for hospitality– though the seat was on the small side. His card was offered back with deference, [b]"Payback is coming for him", he said in response to Morganne.
The address looked like it was the one, and despite the urge to barge in with questions, he did not. There was caution for how they managed to get the card there without him noticing, and witches were always respected. So instead, one large hand pounded twice on the door before he opened it, pausing in the doorway to see others already there. His nose flared as he felt the anger comfortably close. "Whose Harrow card?", came the demand, holding up the one he got.
The anger was a thing that was always present, close enough that it was something that was nearly at the edge, but he loved the focus that it brought. Wary looks were ignored, the anger fueling his strides towards the address. Like now, his stride was direct, purposeful, and it kept annoying distractions out of his path, like some of the more scared ones going as far as across the road. Like they mattered. The sun was about to set as he stalked up to the address, checking the card once more before comparing it to the rest of the buildings on the street. It looked like someone was at the same door that he was headed towards, and that was fine. If they wanted to interrupt this person that had word about Lamm, that was going to be a bit of a problem. He felt the anger rise a little closer.
Captain's Cabin: She stepped back, impressed that the Captain would be so prepared for a situation like this. 'Though', she supposed, 'it never hurts to have the option on hand, rather than not have it on hand when it could have saved so much trouble.' The collapsible pole did raise an eyebrow, since that was not a common thing that she had seen in her (admittedly limited) travels.
"Led a life of adventure before you took to the seas, Captain?", her tone was impressed, even as she stood clear putting something solid between herself and the chest.
Captain's Cabin: Pleasantly surprised by the change in the Captain's demeanor, Laijiri relaxed as well. "You continue to surprise me, Captain." Smiling, she helped him set the hammock, and then stayed out of his way as much as she could in his quarters. "I was a bit wary, as lesser men are, well..." She trailed off as he produced the pouch.
"...This noblewoman, did she seem confident about that chest?" As the captain set to work on the chest, she began preparing her healer's kit, just in case.
The mention of the storm brought her back from her daydreams of shark steaks, and she had enough grace to look mildly embarrassed about her actions. "My apologies captain, I would not endanger the crew any more than my presence here already has." Surprisingly, she managed to keep a straight face through all of that, raising an eyebrow slightly at the offer of the cabin. "Should the captain feel my presence in his cabin would aid security, then I would certainly accept." Some of the crew were none too subtle with their expressions, and it would not do to get on their bad side (or the captain's) by having to harm a couple of them to keep them in line.
Turning to Mazhir, she blinked, not having considered it in that manner. "I was not suggesting that we use the entire body as bait, but I am a healer, and certainly capable of cleanly removing a large amount of flesh to bait a decent hook or two." She did look a bit thoughtful. "I suspect they would have simply eaten us, given the option, and while I am curious to see if they could be used as food, I wanted to catch a shark." She grinned at the mention of the idea. "I haven't tried shark before, and I can certainly cook it. Using them is just a more practical idea. Weren't they just going to go over the side?" Her expression was curious, not quite seeing the ethical objection. It might have been a side-effect of her healer training. "While it may be a bit gruesome, I admit, just getting a chance to examine a body would be good practice for me."
After enough time to let the excitement of battle wear off, Laijiri went to check on Will, then taking him along when treating any injuries that could be treated. "We're going to have start getting you trained", she said with an encouraging smile. As she checked on everyone, she inquired on what he might be interested in that could be learned from any of those present. As the others were dumping the bodies of the fish-creatures, she had an idea. Fresh foodstuffs were not the easiest thing to get on this ship, and they might be able to fish up something using parts of the bodies as bait. "Captain, which of your men are the best at fishing?"
Laijiri looked a bit confused at the words that came from the latecomer to the ship, but the aid that was provided most certainly was welcome. She gave him an appreciative nod, and moved back into the fight, not wanting Garborn to get unlucky. The upwards kick that she leveled at the creature's head missed, unfortunately.
Round 4
The claws of these creatures inflicted too much damage for Laijiri to be able to stay close by, and she retreated out of their reach, too injured to be able to chance them getting a lucky hit again.
With everything that was going on below decks, Laijiri was a bit uncertain about how to approach the fight until Mazhir disappeared, leaving Garborn in view with two enemies visible. Not wanting to engage with the multi-armed creature, Laijiri jumped into the hold to take some of the pressure off, threatening one of the pair of regular fish-creatures to give Garborn a better chance to hit them. Her style kept her in motion, so them figuring out whether or not she was attacking should leave enough of an opening for her aid to have a benefit.
She could not stop the yell of pain that came as she was bitten by the creature, it having used the attacks she blocked to open her guard and bite. She managed to get away with not being injured too badly so far, but this thing was vicious. Going toe-to-toe with it was not a safe idea. A deceptive motion covered the kick she leveled at the creature, a faked step back taking her low before her other leg struck high, using the motion to tumble away so it could not attack her as much.
Round 2 With the creature stunned, Laijiri's pair of attacks were ruined by a sudden shifting of the ship in the storm, her ruined balance causing both to miss terribly, as she stumbled from the impact of a wave. 'Not good at all!', she thought as she tried to regain solid footing.
Laijiri had spent the past two days working with Will, to see how he was doing, and how things functioned on the ship so she would not be in the way. Respectfully, she approached the galley to see what she could do in regards to food, or if she could even help at all. It would not have surprised her to have found that they were all living off of dried stores for the duration of the trip. She had rations, but they should have been able to manage something in regards to what was available on the ocean, if they had the means. As the clouds loom, she looked a bit concerned with the oncoming storm, and made sure that her pack and Will's were secured. Under cover, the cry that drew everyone's attention made her stomach drop. Her help was going to be needed, and quickly. 'Time to earn the ride, I guess', she thought to herself as she looked around for the others to gauge where they were. Once the rainbow burst removed one, she felt more confident in closing the distance with the other one, making a good estimation about where this strike would need to land to prevent it from reacting for a moment. The weather and shifting ship made the upward strike not as ideal as she would have liked, but it hit. Steeling herself, she readied herself for the response in case it withstood her attack.
The captain's proposition provoked a raised eyebrow and a once-over, but it was not something that was entirely outside the realm of possibility. She did smile and politely demur for now, returning the whisper in slight jest, "Are these the same men that have to purchase companionship when they are in port?" In a more conversational tone, she added, "I am also fairly skilled with food preparation. Provided I would not be offending the master of your galley, I can also be of assistance if you've the means to spice up your meals." She gave an encouraging grin to Will, and nudged him slightly. She had a fairly standard pack, and had picked up the essentials for Will in the span of time that they had before they needed to board. She was happy to be leaving this area, and not too worried about the open water. The smell of the harbor was another matter, and the wind from the ocean was welcome.
Laijiri looked about the ship, not quite able to make sense of how all the ropes, and rigging, as well as the activity on the ship worked. She did go to look for the captain, to introduce herself. She also made sure to bring Will along. "Hello Captain, my name is Laijiri and this is Will. I am one of the group that has been hired on to protect your ship. In addition to some martial skill, I also am a skilled healer. Will can be of limited help due to his injury, but should be capable, I believe." She gave Will a significant look. "Please let us know where we can be useful."
When they reach the harbor, and Mazhir goes about inquiring, Laijiri will take Will aside and pull out her healing kit. "C'mon now, let's take a thorough look at your hand. Places like that aren't really too sharp on anything else but blades." While she tried to keep a tight hold on her temper, the sight of his hand was infuriating. She was so angry, she had to stop and calm herself. 'Breaking things does not help... Breaking things does not help. Breaking the faces of those that did this might help, though...' After trying to cool her temper enough to see straight, she tried again.
Outside of the jail, Laijiri was waiting with a look of relief. She took in his state, and offered him an encouraging smile before looking to the others that went into the cell block. Whatever she was going to say fell off when she noticed his hand, and she had to make an effort to keep her temper. "Your hand will be the first thing that gets examined when we get back," she said in a tone that brooked no argument. She spun on her heel and started heading back. The sooner they were not in this immediate area, the less chance they had of having someone start a fight.
Laijiri had moved from her position leaning on the bar while the noble was making his pitch, and came over to the table that the others were seated. Her hair was pulled back loosely, and her expression was a bit disconcerted. 'It's strange to see a common room so empty', she thought. "We also should review what we just agreed to do, and see if we can't think of a couple of different ways to go about it. It might help. Talking to the two from yesterday might be beneficial, and I'm expecting it to not be easy."
Laijiri came down in the middle of the discussion, cautious and eyeing the group that were present. She remained quiet, surprised at Vaelen's regard of the representative. Openly, her expression was thoughtful at the promise of payment, and the mention of intrigue. That they would be headed to another city had promise as well. She had made contact with the like-minded folks of in this down, but there was more to see. "I too am interested", she offered, seconding Mazhir.
Laijiri also woke up with a stretch and a yawn, enjoying the quiet and silence before she realized that the sounds that she was used to hearing were not present. The room was intact and there were no sounds of panic, but this was not a beginning that seemed normal. Her bare feet touched the cool wood floor and she pulled on her tunic before cracking the door to look out into the hallway. 'Still too quiet.' She hastened to get fully dressed.
While she did not like the manner in which the half-orc was acting, she did respect the law. So if the others did not see anything wrong with their authorizations, then she could not interfere. Her jaw clenched, she did nothing as the boy was retrieved. She watched the group leave, the noises of the inn growing steadily towards the volume it was at before the scene. She did not know how the others felt, but she was done. "That's it for me", she said rather flatly, returning to the table long enough to finish what remained of her wine. "I'm going to get some sleep."
Laijiri stood quickly, her chair making a sound from how fast it moved across the wooden floor from the speed of her standing. Seeing Jovar doing something that may end up in the appearance of that... thing certainly provided a reason to put some haste in her step. Quickly, she moves to retrieve the boy, guiding him a little bit away from the fight that may break out to the other end of the bar. "C'mon kit, here's not really that safe..."
It was fun being regarded as heroes for what they did. She had never seen rats that big before, and was not surprised that he had blocked the door and looked for help. If there had been any more of those, the six of them may have been in trouble. Laijiri was not really one for fame, though she had to admit that it felt good, at least for tonight. It was not exactly the thing that she had pictured herself doing a week ago, but the pay was fair, and it was at least exciting. The barmaid approaching prompted a headshake from her, she was satisfied for tonight. It was good to just not have to cook. What still had her attention was the appearance of the... thing that was summoned to help out down there. She had never seen the like, and honestly, the appearance was unsettling. The shudder was something that she could not supress, just the thought of it made her skin crawl. Its physiology made no sense. "You guys want anything else?", she said, getting their attention while trying to get hers off of the creature's looks.
"Litsy, give me a hand?" With that little bit of warning, Laijiri maintained the confident air, intercepting the drunken woman heading their way like she was trying not to bump into her, but managing to do so. "Calistria's boots, miss! You nearly knocked me over! Are you okay? You look like you got a little too close to the door, there!" Laijiri was hovering like she was trying to let go, but the woman's stumbles kept her hovering on the verge of falling.
Laijiri was taking in the sights of Eel's End, so much so to the point that she was not directly listening, distracted by the view. She dragged herself back with a bit of effort, looking at Giorgio. "They could be a bit better, but they ought to be enough to hold for now. We'll have to see. It also isn't as if the guards haven't already pegged us as a group." Setting out with a confidence that had to be faked, Laijiri's pace was casual, taking in the sights of the place as she led them towards the Eel's End. Not much had to be faked on her part, it was just how she was going to have to put things together that was going to be tricky.
