Well look at that, a 1-9 divine caster applicant!

@Mary Anne Kerrelia: It's cool if you're evil in this one, as long as you don't play stupid/evil as your alignment, you know?

"That's what I'm talkin' about!" --Kirzon, the assassin the alchemical merchant.

As a clarification for Beerfiend, Kirzon is a vivisectionist and therefore gets d6 sneak attack instead of bombs. Still not very impressive melee damage, but more tolerable and with future growth possible. I think the "optimal" way to play vivisectionist is Str-based with Feral Mutagen, which could definitely be fun but is a different character concept.

Depends on what you mean, and where you draw the line. I love horror, and I don't really mind if the crimes committed by hags are discussed /referenced / brought up during the game. But I'm not comfortable with SA being something that can happen to a PC during an adventure.

This sounds exactly right to me. Other than this, I'm not concerned.

Hi GM Elfreide,

On seeing this recruitment, I was excited to put together a concept for a Daggermark assassin! Here's Kirzon, a Half-Orc Alchemist (Vivisectionist), who can play the classic rogue role of stealthy scout, sneak attacker, and trap disabler. Alchemist gives Kirzon a surprisingly strong connection with poisons (e.g., poison use, poison resistance, swift poisoner), which I thought made it a good fit with the general Daggermark flavor.

As an assassin, Kirzon is lawful evil. But he's killing for profit and gain--definitely not an over-the-top evil creature delighting in the cruelty of killing itself. He'll very much be a team player in a survival setting, and the party might not know he's evil for quite a while. There's also a path for Kirzon to find some redemption. No guarantee, but a relationship of trust with a good person might begin to turn him around.

Thanks for your consideration!

@Cinder--poor thing, I forgot all about you. There may be an opportunity yet . . . stay tuned.

@Innis--okay, that's fine. I don't want to mess up your concept. You can have a +1 enchantment bonus to my charisma linked to your bonded object. Calistria favors you today.

@Amigail--Yes, that works! I thought Slashing Grace also solves that problem, which is a feat you took, but yeah, the point is you can get dex to hit on your Falcata.

Inactive

Hi folks,

I'm interested in giving each of your characters a boon. This will strengthen your characters to face the challenges ahead. Here is what I propose for each of you.

Amigail--You gain Swashbuckler Finesse.
Cassandra--You can attack and threaten adjacent squares with a reach weapon.
Innis--Your Magical Knack trait applies to spellcasting from all classes. (You can change your spells known/memorized given this new ability.)
Lililinda--Your mind-affecting spells affect undead creatures, including mindless undead.
Merelda--The enchantment from Hzarakul will move to your rapier (this will be explained in-game).

Making slow but steady progress on restarting this game.

We'll see what exactly happens to Kirzon and Boros, but they probably won't be active participants once I go down this route.

Agree this is meant to be a hard campaign. I've been considering whether a slight boost in player power would be appropriate. That's more fun than pulling punches. Will think on it as I explore the material.

It'll take some time for me to ramp up, so please be patient.

Inactive

Any word? I'm tempted to click Buy on a PDF copy of this campaign.

Inactive

I am still hoping that GM Aumakua comes back, and will wait to see if Innis has any luck. If that does not work out, I'll figure out next steps. It will probably take a bit for me to digest if I crack open the book, and I don't want to spoil things if I can continue on as a player.

Inactive

I can always buy it. So, roll call? People still here? Does this sound interesting?

Inactive

I would consider running the end of this if we cannot get our GM back or if he would like a break. Not that I have gobs of time, but I really want to see how this all ends given where we are.

Of course, it would help if someone actually has the book. Anyone?

Inactive

Welcome back! We all slowed down here, but things certainly will get interesting if we either fight here or manage to walk past to see what lies beyond.

Makes sense for Cass to stay silent and invisible.

Inactive

Kirzon would normally just return to his swampy home, but now that it turns out there's a connection to the dwarves underground, he might serve as a guardian of that area for a time, learning more about its history so he can pass on the story.

Inactive

Kirzon's jaw drops at the offer. "No! Tha dread axe Hzarakul's pow'rful, a legend 'mong tha dwarves. Ye canna jus give 't 'way m'lady!"

Bluff, aid another: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (12) - 2 = 10

Kirzon is hardly a deceiver--his concern is genuine but it weaves into Innis's web of lies quite well.

Inactive

Kirzon waits in the wings, listening for any sign of trouble as Innis executes her schemes.

Inactive

Right, if we're relying in part on Lili's Vanish, that lasts 5 rounds. So it's combat invisibility, not sneak past the bad guys invisibility. Still seems to me like we need to fight.

Inactive

If it's possible to avoid the fight, that's better. I'm with Merelda on that concept. But that also seems to require getting 6 people and 1 snake invisible. Is that possible? Is avoiding the fight a real choice?

Inactive

It doesn't seem like we have enough Invisibility spells to set up a full-party ambush. We would need 7 of those for the party, unless someone has Circle of Invisibility available. Right now, it seems like we have 2 in effect--one on Cass and one on Merelda. Where do the other 5 come from?

If fighting is the path forward, from Kirzon's perspective, he's the closest thing to having fireball, as follows:
Prep: Cast Call Lightning. This can be precast ahead of battle.
Prep: Wild Shape into a bird, fly overhead. Great if invisibility is possible.
Round 0: Cast Summon Nature's Ally III. Summon 1d3 Earth Elementals (pray it's 3).
Round 1: Cast Burst of Radiance. Poor man's fireball.
Round 2: Cast Burst of Radiance again. Poor man's fireball. Hope some cultists start going down.
Round 3+: Call lightning whatever the heck needs to die.

Meantime, Lili's Hideous Laughter should have full effect against ogres, which are humanoids. So she can pop her Summon Monster on Round 0 and start Hideous Laughtering the ogres.

Both of these examples assumes a Round 0 is possible, which requires enough invisibility spells for the party as noted above. The alternative is that some of the party is invisible and the rest of the party stays back and catches up when combat begins.

'old on, lass, 'ow menne cultist are we talkin' 'bout? We're 'ere fer tha 'igh priest, nae a bunch a ogres 'n folk redde ta fight us!"

Yay DM Aumakua!

Still here, we are so close to the end!

"It's dwarven 'andywork alright, tha dwarves did a good job for a bad god." The party gets the sense that Kirzon feels proud, despite the fact that the walls are covered with wicked looking skeletons. "Ah'll keep a careful eye this time 'round."

Kirzon keeps watch as they proceed onward, now aided by the blessings of Calistria and the Great Tree Spirit.

Perception, Guidance, Innis: 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 11 + 2 + 1 = 33

Inactive

Kirzon examines the stonework warily, not entirely trusting the carvings to stay inanimate.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22

"Ah'm all ready 'ere," concurs the old dwarf, advancing along with his large snake.

Hello friends,

I'm back! Covid-19 means less work, means more time for posting. Not my favorite reason to be back, but I will take what positives I can from our situation.

Nice work dispatching evil cultists!

Inactive

Hi everyone. Work is still a mess and got worse when someone gave notice such that I'm taking over a big chunk of the work. Right now, I need to take a break from PbP until I can recover, and I don't know exactly how long that'll be (maybe a month, maybe less, maybe more)? I've done PbP reliably for years now and intend to return, but I also don't want a character botted indefinitely which is a burden on any game. So I'm fine with whatever is decided about my character--whether to continue botting him, setting him aside momentarily, or even doing something more permanent and/or finding another player.

Really sorry, and I'll check in again when I can.

Inactive

Hi everyone, I think I was too optimistic. My son is sick (hand foot mouth, not scary but very burdensome), and work is still intense, so it's been a struggle to do anything. Another week and I can hopefully turn the corner, but I don't want to overpromise. So sorry. Please continue to bot me.

Inactive

I expect to resume posting in 1 week.

Inactive

To all my games: I'm extremely busy at work at the moment, which is making PbP hard. This will pass, but for now, please bot me as needed. Looking forward to connecting again when the storm passes.

Kirzon obliges, healing Amigail some more!
CMW: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (4, 4) + 3 = 11.

Boros does whatever he does . . . will he manage to flank their foe or does he stumble across a new enemy?

Inactive

Kirzon heals Amigail using the wand.

CMW: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (7, 7) + 3 = 17
9 charges remain.

"What'd ya see up thar, lass?"

How tall is this building? Does Boros see any possible opening from circling around? Like a window? If he can't see an opening, he'll come back down.

Inactive

"Mebbe we jus' 'ead 'n a diffrent d'rection," suggests Kirzon.

Meanwhile, Boros continues to search for another way in.

Inactive

Ouch . . .

Inactive

I also can't see anything on the map, but the description sounds good.

Kirzon goes into the building and gives Cassandra a minor blessing from the Great Tree Spirit. Guidance.

Boros starts slithering up the sides of the building, hoping to find another way into the floor above. Using climb speed.

Inactive

Now THAT is really deep!

Inactive

"They be good at gettin' itna trouble," agrees Kirzon, as he follows Merelda.

Inactive

Under Pathfinder rules, how fast do you fall per round? I know it's 60ft/round with featherfall, I'd imagine without featherfall it's a lot faster.

Inactive

Artsiv stops attacking as instructed. Though he flies close and is perfectly happy to start again if the battle resumes in earnest.

Kirzon follows Merelda to watch over the return of Cinder.

Inactive

Artsiv goes after one of the remaining cultists! (A male one, if there's a distinction.) Flying up 5 ft and over green.
Claw, higher ground: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19; Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Claw, higher ground: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20; Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Claw, higher ground: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19; Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4

Kirzon and Boros wait, trusting their allies have the situation well in hand.

Inactive

Artsiv, Kirzon's eagle friend, appears on the other side of the foe from Merelda. Giving her a +2 to her attack from flanking.

After Merelda strikes, the eagle will claw at the flanked foe! And if he goes down, the eagle will shift to flank the foe threatening Amigail. Full attack.

Claw: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 = 10; Damage, Smite: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Claw: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 2 = 9; Damage, Smite: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Bite: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 = 10; Damage, Smite: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Boros moves around to give Cassandra a better view of the enemy. He readies to attack anything that happens to get into reach. Move, readied attack.

Kirzon gives Boros a minor blessing. Guidance.

Inactive

Fixed it, he has 32 HP.

Inactive

Seeing that the room is quite crowded, Kirzon begins calling for his trusty eagle friend Artsiv to do battle! Begin casting Summon Nature's Ally 1

Boros lacks room to maneuver in the tiny room, and waits impatiently for some opportunity to move in.

Inactive

Boros and Kirzon stay relatively close as Merelda advances.

Inactive

Kirzon and Boros proceed warily. Approaching the temple of an evil goddess made him feel extremely uncomfortable, as he wonders if she could strike them down the moment they entered. Kirzon casts Detect Magic and looks around.

Inactive

@GM Aumakua--Do you agree that Call Lightning works indoors, in places that have ceilings lower than 30 feet? Just wanted to confirm before making that one of Kirzon's 3rd level spells.

Inactive

The old dwarf and his trusty snake prepare to begin a new day of battle.

Inactive

"Ah feel tha pow'r o' tha Great Tree Spirit's wit' meh. 'Opefully it's 'nough fer what's comin' next."

Falling in step, Kirzon keeps a watchful eye, as Boros licks the air.
Perception Kirzon: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
Perception Boros, scent: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Inactive

Proposed spell loadout:
3rd: Call Lightning, Communal Resist Energy
2nd: Burst of Radiance, Burst of Radiance, Flaming Sphere
1st: Expeditious Construction, Liberating Command, Obscuring Mist, Snowball
0th: Detect Magic, Guidance, Light, ______

Inactive

@Amigail--have you considered a level of Swashbuckler or Daring Champion Cavalier? I think that would give you +Dex to hit on the falcata, which would help even as a single level dip.

I kind of like the Daring Champion Cavalier, because Amigail just dedicated herself to the cause of Calistria.

*Edit* - Perhaps more accurately, Amigail dedicated herself to Innis!

Inactive

Thinking about it more, I'm worried that this temple is going to be kind of like that tower we fought through, where we had to travel through a hole to get up to the next level. In which case, I think the mobility of Natural Spell could be a difference maker.

Inactive

That really sucks--losing all your Hero Lab files sounds rough. :(

If it helps, I don't know that we had much in the way of gold anyway. And, given where we are, I don't think we'll be buying anything before the final confrontation.

Inactive

Druid 5
HP: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 (at current Con=13)
3rd Level spells
Feat: Natural Spell
Skills: Acrobatics x2, Heal, K. Religion, Perception, Sense Motive, Spellcraft

I'm not entirely sold on the feat, but the ability to cast spells as a bird or the like could be helpful. Alternate suggestions welcome.

Boros also gets a feat. Maybe Iron Will?
