Background:
Kinvara Doone was born in Cheliax and dropped at the back door of a Bellflower Tiller. Her parents are unknown. The Tiller smuggled the babe accross the border into Taldor where she grew up fascinated by ancient history. Her foster parents were retired adventurers, her father an alchemist turned apothecary, her mother a fencer and scoundrel turned locksmith. She learned curiosity from both other them and applied their teaching to a strange mix of swordplay and alchemy. Having made a small name for herself in dungeon delving she was approached by a Pathfinder agent and given an opportunity to apply, if she could find a simple ruby ring.
Kinvara's profile has been updated to include her background, personality, and appearance. I believe this makes her submission complete.
Background, Appearance, and Personality:
Born with hooves, scales, horns, and a tail, Kinvara was left on the doorstep of the old Sandpoint Chapel. No-one knows who left her there or where they might have come from or gone to. Growing up in the Turandarok Academy, she was always looked at as an outsider, nobody ever really trusted the little girl with the horns and hooves. She was frequently the butt of jokes behind her back. Often the victim of bullying, sometimes showing up at dinner with cuts and bruises.
Kinvara would often sneak away to watch the goblins down on the beach. She managed to befriend Gorvi and his crew so they did not turn her in when they spotted her at the cliff. As she got older, she leveraged her small size to earn a little spending cash. She would squeeze into spaces too large for most and set rodent traps at the various inns and taverns. She would dump the corpses over the cliff with the dung. With the Late Unpleasantness she did her best to remain hidden in any inaccessible location she could find.
Even as she grew into a young woman Kinvara was still petit and many underestimated her years. Standing well under five feet and weighing 6 stone, 11 pounds. Her dark, short cropped hair frames the horns that grow from her head. Strange violet eyes look with suspicion from a face covered in small iridescent scales. Her small cloven hooves make surprisingly little noise as she steps. Her dark leather clothes are covered with various pockets and pouches. A dexterous tail emerges from behind her, constantly making sure none of her belongings have gone missing.
Having born the brunt of many years of ridicule, Kinvara is guarded and wary of others. She often protects herself with wry sarcasm, but tends to be more rude than humorous. She gets along with few others because of her acerbic personality. Once a lack of I'll intent has been proven, she is willing to do almost anything to maintain that relationship
Here is Demon Lurking's submission.
The name and alias have been reused, but the crunch is completely new.
Background and description and in the works.
I am _so_ sorry for disappearing. I had a series of life implosion and am just now getting everything stable again.
I am not going to go into detail, suffice to say that I dropped a bunch of balls and these boards were one of them.
I hope you all can forgive me. I hope to return to PbP games in the future and would love to do so here. I don't think my life is together enough yet, but I look forward to the time when it is.
Ugh. Still feeling pretty lousy. But I think I'm coherent enough to get some posts together. Been taking care of sick toddlers while sick doesn't leave much energy (physical or mental) to catch up on PbP. I've fallen asleep while crafting posts several times, only to have the situations change by the time I wake. Hope to have something up soon.
Kinvara watches as the shadows rise from the floor. She raises Pharasma's symbol. "Mother of Souls, let these rest!" A wave of positive energy flies towards them.
Channel Positive Energy:2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8DC 18 Will Save for half damage.
"That feels almost too easy. With all that we have heard about this thing, could this be some last trick of the Heart to save itself?" Kinvara ponders aloud while joining the others in making haste to the exit. "If it allows for us to escape I guess it does not matter."
Kinvara looks at the Heart critically, trying to determine if positive or negative energy would have a more desirable effect. "Any idea if this thing reacts to healing magics as one of the undead would?" She futilely reloads and fires her crossbow.
"Mother, grant us your blessing." Kinvara casts bless and loads her crossbow. As the hole reaches the size to step through, she enters the courtyard and fires.
Kinvara thinks about this for a few moments. "So, if we can convince Stepan to accept Sorin as heir, you will cease all hostilities against the humans? And you will help us to release all the prisoners here by assisting in the defeat of the Heart? What assurances do we have that you will not turn on us?"
Kinvara eyes the shadow creature carefully. "You are not human, nor are you kayal. Where do you come from that you feel welcome to meddle in the affairs of a barony you haven't seen in centuries? What kind of creature are you?"
If Kinvara ever gains a level, she's definitely putting a rank in Knowledge (planes).
"If you are not capable of causing the plague currently afflicting Karpad, perhaps the Heart is to blame? As for the light, we would see all those imprisoned here returned to the light. Provided they do not seek to harm others or their way of life." Kinvara attempts to speak plainly and without provocation.
"The humans and the kayal of Karpad have been living in a peace that has been jeprodized by this disease. You are not one of them, yet you speak of the kayal as your people, do you intend to put yourself above them as you fee the humans do?"
"I think that you may have a somewhat single sided view of the baron. Only his enemies have shared their lives with you. He has grown since he sent his brothers to join you. He has a wife and heir now. They have changed him for the better. He has seen fit to send us here to release all the prisoners, but wishes to ensure a peaceful return to sunlit lands."
"So it is that we must entreat with Nicasor. If he is willing to return peacefully to Karpad, that would be best. If he is unwilling, then other options must be considered."
Kinvara stays quiet, her father's gift with people hampered by Pharasma's gift for healing. No need to cause trouble, Milovic seems to have everything under control.
Kinvara readies her holy symbol and prepares to channel positive energy at the foul undead. She nods to her companions signalling her preparations complete.
"The body is likely human, and has been deceased for some time. I can not tell if the finger was removed before or after death. That doll, on the other hand, appears to be kayal."
"This place has truly broken Nicasor's rebellion. It is sad that those who no longer believe in it are still trapped here with those who do. Once we have eliminated Nicasor, we shall turn our attention to the Heart."
Kinvara does her best to remain quiet behind the others.
Kinvara gasps when she realizes how long they've been here. "I am so sorry. I think you have been here for a very long time. It has been centuries, nearly a millennium. Have you ever had the desire to leave?"
Kinvara quietly shares what she sees with the others. "This sort of infiltration is not my primary mode of operation. I will defer to you, Xander and Milovic, in our explorations."
Kinvara follows Xander staying far enough back that she doesn't make as much noise. Her eyesight keener than the other's who depend on their light, she can hang back and still see ahead.
Kinvara waits and watches as Xander and Milovic prepare to open the door. Her hand goes to the pouch of Stubborn Nails. "Well Nicasor seems to think himself emperor of this shard of a shadow realm. Where would a being that feels like it is in control be? Some sort of throne room would be my thought, but where that would be is anyone's guess. "
Journeying through the manor's dungeons Kinvara draws her cloak tighter against the ever present sense of watchfulness. "Thank you for your hospitality. If our actions successfully remove this plague from our world, our journey will have been worth it. What we can do to ease the curse upon your family will be an added boon. While we journey into this dark realm, our thoughts are with you and your town. We will find an ending to this evil."
Kinvara is silent through most of Stepan's discussion. When offered an ioun torch, she shakes her head. "One of the more useful gifts of my father's lineage is the ability to see in darkness. I should not have need of one of those, but I give my thanks for the offer."
"I think I shall stay here and look over the library. A good night's rest would also be useful I think."
"Is it possible for you to tell us anything about the environment we may encounter on the far side? Or perhaps something of Nicasor's strengths and weaknesses? This information could be vital to our successful return."
"He is no more." Kinvara's simple words convey the massive weight of their tale.
"We would offer our assistance in this matter. This ill-will that seeps from the mirror may have spawned the Tallowthroat. It is as a parasite, using the host to harbour a piece of the Realm of Shadow. This piece grows to become unliving shadowstuff, until it finally bursts forth, felling the host and giving birth to a vile Shadow." She rests her head in her hand, closing her eyes to the horror of the situation. "So much death, too much.""We must put an end to this. And quickly."
No Knowledge (planes), so let's try Spellcraft. Spellcraft:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
Kinvara considers Anya's words. "I would that we could speak with your husband, but perhaps you can carry our story to him." She takes a deep breath.
"The good Captain Lucian Groy has charged us to carry this tale to the baron if we could. The Tallowthroat has lead to much fear and mistrust in the town. When we arrived the townsfolk had formed a lynch mob." She continues to share the tale of their voyage. The missing townsfolk, the towns reactions, the encounter at the candle works, the revelations of Ilquis, those that fell to his machinations, and the Shadows spawned from the Tallowthroat. "This disease is dangerous and will only continue to spread unless we can root out a cause and find a way to dispatch these undead."
"What can you tell us about the first two victims of the Tallowthroat? It may be important. There has been some -- unpleasantness in town. It all comes back to the Tallowthroat, I don't know why. I think we need to know where it comes from."
Kinvara is trying to be delicate, but the idea that the baron is somehow to blame for the Tallowthroat is somehow terrifying.
Kinvara waits while the childhood friends catch up. "We have much to discuss, but it must wait. There are protocols to follow and I do not know them here. I don't like the idea of having our discussions in front of the boy. Though he is the heir, he will need to learn how to deal with things like this." She keeps silent trying to stay in the background.
Kinvara hesitates to say more. We do not wish for needless repetition, the breadth of our tale should wait for the baroness. I will say your relationship with Irina was not the cause of her death. More likely her friendship with Catalina put her at a higher risk than others. I would say that matters are dire. We arrived to late for so many. The Tallowthroat has caused such fear among the people, that fear has lead to distrust and hasty action. I fear that there will be more death before we do see an end to this." She bows her head before continuing.
"You say his lordship studies the Shadow Realm? That may mean he is more knowledgeable about this disease than we had previously considered."
"What do you know about this mysterious illness that Stepan's brothers fell to? Is there some chance it may have resembled the Tallowthroat?"
Kinvara senses that Milovic is having some difficulty formulating his message. "There is, unfortunately, more. We would that you sit with us while we share our news with the baroness. Hopefully we may also share it with the baron. Have you, perchance, some insight into why he has closed off the manor in this way. It worries some of the townsfolk."
"This is not going to be good. I guess we now know who Irina was having an affair with. How do we tell her lover that she is dead? And such an unpleasant, pointless death at that."
"I think it is best that we all go inside to talk."
